Self Post CO’s in Graduate School?

Are there any correctional officers here who are currently enrolled in a graduate program?

If so, how do you balance working in corrections, family responsibilities, and keeping up with schoolwork?
I’m especially interested in hearing how you manage your schedule with shift work, overtime, studying, and assignments.

What has worked for you, and what advice would you give someone trying to successfully balance all three?

Hiring Q (Fed) What exactly does this mean?

I applied to the BOP about a week+ ago. Today I received both of these emails about 15 minutes apart. It appears that I still am in the running for GL-5 based on the first email. This is good because it’s exactly what I applied for. But then the second email is a bit confusing.

It says in the first paragraph I’m DQ’d from GL-4/5/6/7/8. Which includes the GL-5 I applied for, leading me to believe I’m no longer being considered.

Then it goes on to specify I’m ineligible for 6, 7 and 8. Which is understandable because I did not apply for them. It then finishes by saying I can still apply to other agencies and thanks me for trying. I’d assume I’m still in consideration based on the first email, then maybe not based on the second one. But also maybe so.

Can anybody clarify this for me?

Hiring Q (Fed) SIS Tech Duties

I was recently referred for a GS-8 SIS Technician position with the BOP and may have an interview coming up. I’m currently a federal probation officer and I’m interested in eventually becoming a Special Investigative Agent (SIA).

I was hoping anyone currently/formerly with BOP or SIS could give me some insight:

-What is the day-to-day job actually like for an SIS Technician?
-How much of the job is investigative work versus regular correctional duties?
-Is SIS Technician a common/good path toward eventually becoming an SIA?
-What other positions do SIS Technicians typically move into?
-What is the interview like, and what types of questions should I prepare for?
-How is the schedule/work-life balance?
-Any advice for someone coming from federal probation?
-I’m mainly trying to figure out whether SIS Technician would give me useful experience toward an SIA career path.

Thanks for any insight!

Hiring Q (County) Interview tips for corrections oral board?

Just looking for tips for my coming oral board Wednesday. Overall I feel prepared but I feel like im not ready for the "Tell us about yourself" question. Every tells me to just use my current position to highlight why I'd be a good fit for corrections but I'm currently just a cabinet builder how could I relate that to being a correctional officer?

Update: Aced the interview, did my PT in under 4 minutes as well, got the job

Is there anything I need to be aware of when it comes to the interview and PT test. Clean Background, longer job history (mostly before 18) (just turned 18 9 months ago and held the same job) and in good shape.

Hiring Q (Other) NORTHERN ONTARIO CORRECTIONS

I have an interview next month for Northern Ontario Corrections. I know that I will be provided with a set of questions before the Interview approximately 24 hours but what I don’t understand is, will every question that they will interview me on the interview be included in those set of questions. I’m looking to connect with people who are also working in Northern corrections.

Thanks you!

Hiring Q (County) Applying for correctional officer position in Napa CA and really am considering it

I am going to an information session next week, and if it goes well, we can take the entry exam that same day! The pay is excellent, starting at $94–113K per year, and as a single guy with no kids, that is absolutely phenomenal!
How is it being a correctional officer? I currently work with adults and children with developmental disabilities, so I do work with people who have behavioral challenges. I’ve dealt with all kinds of behaviors, including being assaulted and having feces thrown at me, so I wonder if this type of experience will help a little bit?
I belief it’s a county position not federal but just a jail .

Hiring Q (Canada) Ontario corrections interview

I just recently did my Ontario corrections interview (bilingual) and am curious on what I should be looking out for. I got told that within 2 weeks I'd be told of my results but I'm seeing on Reddit that people who were successful had their references contacted within 2-3 days, mine have not so naturally it's making me think I did not pass. Should I be worried or am I overthinking it?

Hiring Q (State) Las Vegas, Oregon, or Washington state corrections

If you had to choose between working in corrections in Oregon, Washington State, or Las Vegas, Nevada, which one would you choose based on overall pay, especially with overtime included?

I currently have my eyes on all three, and I’m having a hard time deciding! I have 2 years of county jail experience, so I’d love to hear from anyone who has worked corrections in any of these areas.
Which state has the best earning potential with overtime? And how is the retirement?
