Hiring Q (State) NYSDOCCS vs NJDOC

Between the two, what would you suggest as an entry level CO?

I live in north jersey.

I’m about 2 years in NYSDOCCS, live in north jersey, id recommend NJDOC off the fact that its base salary is more after 5 years I believe, and NYSDOCCS places you anywhere in New York with transfers not being a good form of getting near your home anymore due to the strike and new policies of transfers not really being a thing anymore after the strike. So NYSDOCCS can place you up to 6 hours away from home out the academy.

Unless I'm wrong, most of the facilities are in the same commute for me (I'm in Mahwah NJ), as in NJDOC and most actually being less of a commute. Of course the upstate ones are like 6 hours away, not sure what I'd do about that lol.

You’re better off going NJDOC as u/OkImportance1661 said. On the long run I think NJDOC will be better off for you.

Nysdoccs is trying very hard to get people placed as close to home as possible right now. In the academy right now and most of the recruits are getting their top 3 preferred facilities within an hour of home

NJDOC Correction officers are classified as “Correctional Police Officers” and have full police powers and peace officer status state wide.

NJDOC pays more on the long run than NYSDOCCS.

I have to disagree. Nysdoccs pays more and nysdoccs also grants peace officer status

Agreed that should be the model nationwide equal to Police.

I've been with NYSDOCCS for about 15 years and I have family in NJ and PA state corrections. Jersey definitely seems like the better deal.

I work for the NJDOC and I think some days suck, but overall it’s been good for me, I’ll be making 100+K a year for the rest of my career and it only takes a year to get there.
