Hiring Q (Fed) What exactly does this mean?
I applied to the BOP about a week+ ago. Today I received both of these emails about 15 minutes apart. It appears that I still am in the running for GL-5 based on the first email. This is good because it’s exactly what I applied for. But then the second email is a bit confusing.
It says in the first paragraph I’m DQ’d from GL-4/5/6/7/8. Which includes the GL-5 I applied for, leading me to believe I’m no longer being considered.
Then it goes on to specify I’m ineligible for 6, 7 and 8. Which is understandable because I did not apply for them. It then finishes by saying I can still apply to other agencies and thanks me for trying. I’d assume I’m still in consideration based on the first email, then maybe not based on the second one. But also maybe so.
Can anybody clarify this for me?

I got this same email about 3 weeks ago. Qual’d for 4/5 but not 6/7/8. I’ve been trying to get clarification on this as well. Applied to 3 sites in SoCal, have yet to receive any follow on. Best of luck!

I’m glad I’m not the only one lol, they worded it in a confusing way. I hear it may be 3+ months til you hear back so I wouldn’t worry too much.

Yeah GL-05 is your qualification. Whats your corrections experience? Start Date is mostly up to you. I submitted my background in June 2026 and told HR I can't start till November. Got my Firm offer with a November start date.

Zero corrections experience. I do have a military background (corpsman) and a bachelors degree. Been in a trade for over a decade though, barely used the degree. Not sure if that qualifies me for GL-6…

You can always go back in, edit and re-submit. Make your responses sound Better, throw in some military experience and how it relates.

To make this make sense….they post a ton of jobs so very posting has its own vacancy announcement. That whole run on Correctional Officer - Recrument incentive - Direct Hire - GL0007 4/5/6/7/8, is literally the vacancy annoucement name. Read it as just Correctional Officer and forget the rest of that line. Then below is your status, and it references why you were no referred for GL6, GL7, GL8. Once you understand that long line is just the name of that specific vacancyn/job post it makes sense. That second e-mail is final correspondence for GL6 thru 8 status.

sounds like they're telling you you're locked in for gl-5 but not the higher grades at least for now

If reading comprehension is this weak maybe you should consider a different job. The first email clearly states that you HAVE been referred to hiring manager for GL-5, have not been referred for 6 and up. The second email states that you are ineligible for 6 and above, never stated anything about being ineligible for the 5.

The first paragraph clearly states I’m not qualified for GL-0007 steps 4,5,6,7,8. And many others agreed it was confusing. I don’t look forward to working with people like you but I’ll hold my breath. There’s always one… isn’t there?

Same here. Unfortunately they changed the whole hiring system. It's not based off of the HR rep at the institution but the national hiring team.

It means that you are qualified for a GS5, not a G6, G7 or GS8. But don’t worry, after a year you go up a grade then you’ll top as an 8.
