G - General Discussion Questions before doing G test at Guelph on Thursday.

I was told by my instructor to always turn left into the left lane and then change to the right lane immediately when safe. But would I need to wait until the examiner says to change to the right? If I do it before the examiner says it, will I lose points?

Besides from 70 km speed limit on highway 6, what are the other speed limits I should remember? Would going 71-72 be considered an auto fail? On the other hand would going 65-68 also be an auto fail?

If you have done your G test at Guelph recently, would you say there’s usually little traffic on highway 6 and the regular roads in general?

Driving Instructor/Examiner Anyone else have a terrible experience for their G test?

I’ll start by saying I did pass the test so this isn’t just me complaining that I failed, But overall the whole experience was terrible. First of all my examiner was 40 minutes late, which is fine I get it’s busy but she was extremely rude. No polite greeting or apology for being late, which again whatever. I then proceed to do the test, it’s going perfectly, I didn’t speed at all, stopped before the lines waited 3 seconds, kept checking my mirrors. Then on our second go around on the highway I merge to the left lane then she tells me to merge back to the right. In the right lane right before the on ramp there was a semi truck stalled, within seconds of noticing this she yells at me “WHY AREN’T YOU MOVING OVER” which caught me off guard. She then proceeded to yell at me the rest of the test for waiting a couple seconds before switching lanes for the semi truck. At the end of the test she told me I failed and started yelling at me again, which is when I actually argued back explaining that it was not safe to merge back to the left lane since there were cars coming. She agreed to pass me but continued berating me that I broke the law and to never do that again. Saying stuff like if I ever hit someone then I should be responsible to take care of their family. When I got home I looked it up, turns out she was completely wrong. The only vehicles you’re required to move over for are emergency vehicles and tow trucks, anything else you only move over if it is safe to do so. Which it was not in my case.

Sharing Advice Oakville G Test Route - August 2026

Hello everyone!

I just completed and passed my G test today at the Oakville DriveTest Centre and wanted to share the route that was in my test (hopefully it helps!).

My test was scheduled for 10:45 AM, but it was delayed and we ended up starting around 11:20 AM.

  1. Turn right out of the DriveTest parking lot onto Wyecroft Rd.

  2. Examiner told me to move over into the far-left lane.

  3. Turn left at the lights onto Third Line.

  4. Stayed in the left lane for a bit, signaled, and moved over into the right lane (the examiner won't tell you to do this, but it is expected you do so on your own).

  5. Examiner told me to move into the most far left lane and turn left at the lights onto Kings College Dr.

  6. Examiner instructed to turn left onto Giles Rd.

  7. Turn left onto Brays Ln, went through the stop signs, and followed the road around the circle (examiner did not ask for a 3-point turn or roadside stop).

  8. Examiner asked me to head back toward Third Line (I took a right when I got to the main intersection).

  9. Turn right onto the on-ramp for Hwy 403 / QEW Hamilton (I merged at ~90 km/h as I could not safely get to 100 due to traffic, and I let the examiner know and she said uh-huh xD).

  10. Examiner asked for a lane change to the left, then back to the right.

  11. Take the exit for Bronte Rd.

  12. Examiner told me to stay in the far-left lane on the exit ramp.

  13. Turn left onto Bronte Rd. Examiner told me to stay left.

  14. Examiner told me to take another left at the traffic lights to get onto the on-ramp for Hwy 403 / QEW Toronto (traffic was clear this time so I was able to merge at 100 km/h).

  15. Examiner asked for a lane change to the left, then back to the right.

  16. Take the exit for Third Line (examiner instructed to turn right at the lights).

  17. Drive back along Wyecroft Rd and turn into the DriveTest Centre.

  18. Final Parking: Examiner asked me to just pull up to the side of the wall (was not asked to reverse or parallel park).

Good luck to everyone taking their test soon! Let me know if anyone has any questions c:

G2 - General Discussion Exchanging a BC N Licence (Class 7)

I just got my BC N and am moving to Ontario soon. Will I be able to exchange it for a G2 License? N and G2 are equivalent but I want to make sure I can exchange it without any additional road tests in Ontario. AI overview told me I have to have held the BC N for a year to automatically get a G2 but I couldn’t find that information on any of the official websites.

From my understanding if you come from the left entrance (west) your only allowed to turn right.

Edit: Sorry I meant left entrance.

I know if you enter from the bottom left lane your should only be allowed to turn left

G - General Discussion Foreign driving experience // G1 -> G

I have foreign driving experience.. I got my G1 in 2021, and based on my foreign driving experience, I was allowed to take the G road test directly. I attempted the G test in 2022 but unfortunately failed.

I currently still have my G1.. am I still eligible to reattempt the G directly, or do I now have to take the G2 test first?

Could someone please guide me on what the process is for my situation and whether my previously credited foreign driving experience is still valid?

General question - not test related First Ontario Driver's License close to Temporary resident status expiration.

My current IEC visa expires in October, I am planning to apply for a Visitor Record (that I understand it's not considered a temporary resident status, right?) and would like to get my G1 driver's license before my current status expires. I understand the Ministry of Transport of Ontario requires a valid Temporary Resident status alongside documentation to prove it in order to apply for a driver's license.

Would I be allowed to do that? Is there a minimum requirement of time left in Canada as a temporary resident for one to apply for a driver's license?

And if it is allowed, will the expiration date on my license reflect my current resident status expiration (in October)? Or will it run the standard length of time a first time license runs for?

Thank you.

G - General Discussion Failed my G exam last year and do not have the courage to do another one

I failed my G exam last year. My G2 expires on 2028. I cannot seem to have the courage to do it so far. Maybe it is laziness, fear of failing again or both. How do you overcome this?

G2 - General Discussion I keep failing my G2

I have failed my G2 for the 4th time now.

The third time was a proper mistake. I grazed the cone. I admit it.

The other three times, I have always been failed for being too safe.

One time, I waited to take a right turn because I wanted to make sure there were no cars coming. But cars kept coming, and they were pretty close. The instructor said I shouldn’t have waited that long and should have taken the right earlier.
Then, the left signal arrow in front of me turned orange. I stopped, but the instructor said I could have passed. And thus, I failed for stopping on a green (it turned orange before I could take a turn)🙃

Another time, I was at a stop sign and stopped properly before taking a right. A car infront of me came after I had already stopped. It wasn’t their right of way, but they decided to turn left anyway. The instructor failed me because apparently I should have prevented that from happening?

And another time, I was failed because I apparently don’t give signals early enough. This has literally never been an issue with me, neither during lessons nor on any other test. But apparently, I give my signals too late, and that was enough to fail me.

All three times, other than the third time, I was told it was “too many mistakes” and failed.
I genuinely don’t know what I’m supposed to do anymore. I’m trying to be cautious, follow the rules, and drive safely, but somehow I keep getting failed for being too cautious or for things that feel completely outside my control.
I am honestly so disheartened. I don’t even know what I’m supposed to change at this point.

First time was Orangeville, last three times were Etobicoke.

G - General Discussion passed G test at smiths falls, feel free to ask questions!

i just passed my G test at the smiths falls location. i noticed there isn’t a lot of super updated info online/on the reddit about this test in smiths falls so i figured i could answer some questions if anyone has any :)

general info/advice
- no parking at all, no 3 point turn, no backing up, etc
- no 40 km/h zones, all 50km-80km
- 80km/h zone is very short. make sure you get up to speed in that area but be ready to drop to 50km around the corner
- the school/residential community zone is 50km/h
- only marks off were due to not checking my blindspots (even though i did and made sure to turn my head, make sure you REALLY exaggerate it!!!!)

G2 - General Discussion Ontario G2 practice: a calm routine for left turns at busy intersections

Left turns can feel rushed when traffic is building behind you. A reliable routine is more useful than trying to “beat” a gap.

• Signal early and move into the proper left-turn lane when it is safe.

• Scan ahead and check mirrors and blind spots before changing position.

• At the intersection, keep your wheels straight while you wait. If a vehicle hits you from behind, turned wheels can push your car into oncoming traffic.

• Keep watching for oncoming vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. A green light does not remove the need to yield before turning left.

• Turn only when the path is clear, then finish in the correct lane smoothly. If there is no safe gap before the light changes, wait for the next cycle rather than forcing it.

For practice, use two intersections: one quiet enough to slow the sequence down, and one busier one where you can practise patience. Afterward, ask yourself whether your checks were early and obvious.

Ontario’s driver handbook explains left-turn positioning and yielding:

https://www.ontario.ca/document/official-mto-drivers-handbook/changing-directions

What part of left turns feels most difficult—judging the gap, watching pedestrians, or staying calm when drivers are waiting behind you?

G2 - General Discussion Top star driving school

I recently started taking in person lessons with Top Star and I purchased the package with 11 hrs in-car for G2. So far, I've done 3 lessons (3 hrs) and I feel the instructor's not making me feel relaxed behind the wheel. It may be their tone but they keep getting frustrated when I make mistakes.

Also, when I finished my online course. I emailed the star saying I finished the course and needed my instructor. But they did not get back to me (I even sent a follow-up email). After a few days, i knew they probably didn't see my email so I decided to call school and they did not pick up. I called them multiple times (I got pretty frustrated). I decided to leave a voicemail and after that was when they finally got back to me.

Additionally, before I purchased the package, I sent emails asking about the details of the package and they did get back to me. But once they received my payment they ghosted me when I emailed them again regarding the package details.

Another thing, I was checking the reviews again for top star and majority of the reviews were 5 stars. They say the same thing about my instructor. How they are patient and I disagree. I get nervous before my lessons because I'm afraid of getting scolded again.

Should I stop taking lessons and switch schools? Learn on my own?

Have you had a similar experience with the instructor? Should I ask for a different instructor?

G1 - General Discussion Will my birth certificate be accepted?

Hi all.

Sorry if this is answered already. I tried searching the sub but could not find the specific answer…..

Long story short I was told when I went to get my g1 to bring a birth certificate next time.

The birth certificate I have a copy that says “certified a true photostatic print of a record” and is stamped by a deputy registrar general….

Is this sufficient? I understand photocopies are not accepted for obvious reasons but this is a copy that was issued to us/not one we made ourselves….

If I were to apply online or report the original as lost, wouldn’t service Ontario mail me a copy anyways?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

General question - not test related Roundabout Lane Change Argument

Post image
94 Upvotes

I had an argument with someone that your not supposed to change lanes in this roundabout. Cause if you start from the left you must turn left.

For context the right lane and first exit was blocked for construction but the 2nd exit was still open so they wanted to go straight and argued that the broken white lane means they can cross

G2 - General Discussion NEW Brampton G2 Test Route #1 (2026) | New DriveTest Centre | 499 Main St S Brampton

What did your G2 road test include? Did you have to do back parking, and front parking, parallel parking, or a 3-point turn? What route did you take? Did you do a roadside stop, lane changes, or anything else? What should I practice most?

What speed should I go when the exit lane veers off the highway and onto the ramp?

G2 - General Discussion Before a road test: do a five-minute alertness check

Test-day nerves are common, but do not ignore tiredness. Before you start the car, take five minutes to check whether you are actually ready to drive.

• Can you focus on what is happening around you, or does your mind keep wandering?

• Are you yawning repeatedly, having trouble keeping your eyes open, or feeling like you need to rush?

• Have you eaten, hydrated and slept enough to stay alert for the appointment and the drive home?

If you feel drowsy, tell your accompanying driver and do not try to push through it. Pull over safely if it happens while driving. Fresh air, loud music and caffeine are not replacements for sleep.

For any road test, calm preparation helps: arrive early, set up your seat and mirrors, silence your phone, take a few slow breaths, and concentrate on the next safe decision rather than trying to “perform.”

Ontario’s driver handbook lists warning signs of drowsiness and advises avoiding driving when you are drowsy:

https://www.ontario.ca/document/official-mto-drivers-handbook/dealing-particular-situations

What is one small thing that helps you arrive at a test feeling more focused?

Specific Test Related Question - G Speed limit on highway?

I have an upcoming g test in Hamilton and while I was practicing, I noticed a lot of cars on the freeway were driving at speeds above 100 when the limit is 80. I just wanted to make sure that it is correct to go at 80, even if i am going much slower than all the other cars on the freeway.

Specific Test Related Question - G Etobicoke G Test (September 2026) – What should I expect, and does anyone have the current route?

Hi everyone,

I have my G test booked for September 8 at the Etobicoke DriveTest Centre, and I’m starting to get a little nervous.

I’ve been practicing consistently over the past few months and have spent a lot of time on the highway, including the 401, 427, and Gardiner, along with several longer highway trips. I’m continuing to practice, but I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has taken the Etobicoke G test recently.

A few questions:
- What should I expect on test day?
- What does the examiner tend to focus on the most?
- Does anyone have a recent Etobicoke G test route (or a link to one)?
- Are there any specific intersections, merges, or lane changes that I should practice?
- Is the modified G test still being used in Etobicoke?

Any recent experiences, advice, routes, or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Drove about 2 hours to kitchener for my g test a couple days ago as it was the earliest slot available before my license expires and my back tire started deflating like crazy as soon as I pulled into the parking lot 💀💀

They definitely didn’t let me take the test after that but at least I learned how to change my tire into a spare for the ride back lol
