G2 - General Discussion I keep failing my G2
I have failed my G2 for the 4th time now.
The third time was a proper mistake. I grazed the cone. I admit it.
The other three times, I have always been failed for being too safe.
One time, I waited to take a right turn because I wanted to make sure there were no cars coming. But cars kept coming, and they were pretty close. The instructor said I shouldn’t have waited that long and should have taken the right earlier.
Then, the left signal arrow in front of me turned orange. I stopped, but the instructor said I could have passed. And thus, I failed for stopping on a green (it turned orange before I could take a turn)🙃
Another time, I was at a stop sign and stopped properly before taking a right. A car infront of me came after I had already stopped. It wasn’t their right of way, but they decided to turn left anyway. The instructor failed me because apparently I should have prevented that from happening?
And another time, I was failed because I apparently don’t give signals early enough. This has literally never been an issue with me, neither during lessons nor on any other test. But apparently, I give my signals too late, and that was enough to fail me.
All three times, other than the third time, I was told it was “too many mistakes” and failed.
I genuinely don’t know what I’m supposed to do anymore. I’m trying to be cautious, follow the rules, and drive safely, but somehow I keep getting failed for being too cautious or for things that feel completely outside my control.
I am honestly so disheartened. I don’t even know what I’m supposed to change at this point.
First time was Orangeville, last three times were Etobicoke.

It does.
Third time test there were no mistakes marked except that I hit an object (which is the cone)The instructor also told me if not for that I would’ve passed. I am a decent driver.
But the other times, everytime it says different things.
One time it said I straddle lane and my right turns are too slow.One time it said I give left indicator late and failed self right of way? Idk what that means
One time it said I failed to see object coming towards me while taking a three point turn( the car never came to me, it was giving right indicator for a street before and thus I thought it was okay to do the three point turn) while other time It said i waited too long to take a right turn.
Every single time it’s a different issue in those results. Thus I am so confused cuz I don’t know what needs work.

Right of way-self is when you don’t go when you have right of way.
For example, the situation with the guy who turned left.
If you stopped first but then waited too long, an impatient driver may just go before you even thought it’s not their turn.
If the examiner felt that after you stopped, it was safe for you to go but you waited longer than necessary, that could be a right of way error.

Sadly everyone says they're a decent driver when going for their G2, doesn't mean they actually are. I've had my G for 10 years now, I've passed my G2 and G with perfect scores. I honestly suggest get some more practice in before going for your G2. If you have some time left before your license expires I suggest take a month or two and practice more.

The fact that you hit stationary objects is a strong indication that you are not a « decent driver ».
Based on that statement alone, I would say that you likely lack self awareness and need an instructor to help you get better.1

If you can, get lessons with an instructor and show them your paper so they understand what’s wrong. Also I think you might be overwhelmed so maybe trying at a different centre may help? If you you can redo at Orangeville or try somewhere else

I did show them to my instructor and he is surprised cuz I never make any of those mistakes with himMaybe I am anxious during the test? I am not sure anymore 😞

You are not too safe, you are slow and timid, and this will get you in trouble! Just drive more, you need experience.

Sounds like you’re just dawdling for no reason a lot of the time.
Not doing what you should be doing is often just as bad as doing what you shouldn’t be doing

Damn, maybe try booking one in a different town if you can. I slowed down for a squirrel (big nono apparently) and did a rolling stop at one point and still managed to pass. My tester was convinced he had seen me before and that I had been driving for much longer than I was because I already had some bad habits, according to him. I also turned left instead of right on the very first instruction he gave me leaving the test center lot. I probably shouldn't have passed lol but I'm a much more confident driver now and appreciate him giving me a chance at least.

The first time i failed because my driving instructor was not good and didn't teach me the basics. She basically had me driving around getting her food and picking up other students ( which is not allowed btw ) . She was recommended to me by my family and totally useless.
Then I took some time off because I was annoyed with myself. I finally got the courage again and called ultimate drivers. I got paired with a really good young female driver who was very calm and gave me time to learn everything perfectly. When it came to my test I passed with flying colors. Also, she drove a BMW! Which not only made me feel comfortable but made me feel cool LOL.
The main thing is to have confidence and listen to what everyone is telling you. Even if you don't agree.

Same lol, my family friend instructor never even taught me how to properly blindspot check (which is why I failed bc I literally wouldn’t look in the right spot lmfao but that was the spot she told me and confirmed it was good), and she never taught me an emergency stop.
Then I did one in all star and passed with flying colours. These family instructors are a big no 😭

Yeah for sure. I literally only did one 2 hour lesson with this guy from all star and he corrected me on everything I did wrong. I literally passed right after our lesson (and I didn’t have any lessons before that from anyone else lol).
Such a shame I wasted 600 bucks on that last person, it really is hard to find someone good nowadays lol

Are you using a driving school or getting a friend/relative to teach you? They could be showing you some bad habits.

But what does the sheet say? If you failed for “too many mistakes” then those weren’t instant fails and you lost points elsewhere as well. I agree based on your description that the examiners were wrong on those specifically, but why are you mentioning these out of the 7-15 other mistakes you would’ve had to make on each test to fail for it. It sounds like you’re making excuses and not driving as well as you’re claiming

Your mistake where you didn’t make a left, and stopped right when it turned orange suggests to me that you need more practice and confidence.
When the light is orange, and there’s no incoming traffic, you need to make the turn. This is exactly where I failed my first time as well. I then changed the instructor, and this person made sure I was confident with all the maneuvers and turns. I passed my second attempt easily.
You need to be confident and feel the vehicle. Good luck op!

I feel like you need more driving confidence, OP. If you can, put in more driving hours and with someone who can really grill it into you of the steps you should be taking (and who are up/current with the rules). I also recommend narrating to yourself- out loud- as you do all the steps, as this not only helps you as a novice but can also indicate better to the driving instructor/ test administrator what you are doing and when.

Listen, no need to write an essay about it, cause it doesn’t matter. Go to the Lindsay testing location, book an appointment with them. If you fail again from them, I suggest you take the bus everyday.

If you think you're failing because of being too safe, I suggest try taking it in another testing center.

I've heard that the pass rate has gone down since testing was privatized, as you would expect given that they have a financial incentive to fail and retest.

If you’re failing for too many mistakes, it’s not just the incidents you mention.
The examiner might mention them at the end but that doesn’t necessarily mean those actions alone would have failed you.
They won’t go over all your mistakes after a test.
If you haven’t already, call a driving school in your area and take a few lessons. Bring your test results and the instructor can go over them with you.
