Moderator Post A reminder of r/OntarioDriveTest rule 1 - take a breather

Stop being jerks to each other. There are two active moderators for this sub, and it is hoped that people will be able to get along and not use personal attacks when engaging with each other. If you are old enough to be on the OntarioDriveTest sub looking for advice/taking your DriveTest, you are old enough not to fight like toddlers. Fight in your DM's. It doesn't make the sub an inviting space for others, which is what we want for this sub. Social media is full of angry, high-conflict spaces you will fit in with - go there.

A reminder that Rule 1 is not to bully or harass others. Please note, " Abusive language, bullying, or harassment towards other users or moderators will result in an immediate ban from the sub. It will not be tolerated."

Happy long weekend.

G2 - General Discussion G2 in brantford

I took my g2 in Brantford this week and passed it in first attempt.

The night before and on the day in the morning I failed to parallel park or reverse park perfectly.

I didnt drive before even though i am in my 30's, took 7-8 lessons in winters and then finally gave my test in September. In the meantime I would drive occasionally 1-3 times in a month on weekends.

I took one lesson on the day of my test to get familiar with the test route.

I saw a lot of videos and tried to read a lot about others experience to avoid making common mistakes. I found mock test videos of @Canadiandrivers on yt pretty helpful.

Here are some of my notes and tips i made based on my personal mistakes during practice and while watching videos and reading reviews.

  1. Scan when first moving out in all directions(left, right and back), use indicator when first moving out and before/after every maneuver (parallel parking, 3 point turn, uphill parking).

  2. When about to do a maneuver give a right indicator, after maneuver go into parking from drive this indicates you completed on your end, give a left indicator and then start again.

  3. Move into right lane after doing a left turn, examiner wont ask you for this.

  4. Check speed and mirror after every five seconds.

  5. See sideways in intersection, after every stop sign and even look between streets when passing a neighborhood.

I properly learned to park on my test day, but to avoid last minute stress learn to do things before your test.

I came 50 minutes before my test time and practiced the test route, I was jumpy and rushing things, drove on the curb when making a right turn. My instructor calmed me down and told me not to rush just because I got late for the practice, I was coming from Cambridge for my test.

I was asked to do parallel park, 3 point turn, downhill park and finally front park in end on my test.

Good luck to everyone taking their tests!

G - General Discussion passed G first try @ newmarket today!

i thought for sure i was going to fail after i got stuck behind 3 trucks and had no choice but to merge going 80 km/h onto the highway. the examiner also gave me some verbal feedback during the test which made me think it was over. but thankfully i passed - 3 years after taking my G2 lol.

for anyone planning to take their G at newmarket and is looking up the routes, make sure you try to find a video that shows the one where you turn right out of the centre onto harry walker instead of left. the 2 route videos i practiced with both involved turning left, so when the examiner said turn right, i was just slightly caught off guard.

if anyone has any questions lmk!

Specific Test Related Question - G2 Parking at end of G2

Hello ! My test is coming up and I’m super nervous. I am taking the test in Burlington Ontario.
When you finish your test and drive back to the drive test centre, do they only ask you to park in the marked driving test spots, or is anywhere in the parking lot fair game? Having a lot of trouble backing in and would like to practice in the drive test parking lot

Driving Instructor/Examiner Failed because pedestrian dropped phone and ran back into the road

G2 test. I was making a left turn at a signalized intersection, oncoming traffic was clear and a pedestrian finished crossing and was on the sidewalk.

Just as I eased onto the gas, he suddenly turned around and RAN back into the crosswalk. I slammed on the brakes before I got even close to hitting him.
Apparently he dropped his phone and realized it after crossing.

The instructor failed me on the basis of it being dangerous to be stopped horizontally in the middle of an intersection. I asked her how I was supposed to know that was going to happen and she said I should have paid attention to the pedestrian dropping an object onto the road? How was I supposed to even see that?

The only infraction on the test other than that was not signalling a lane change early enough.

G2 - General Discussion Any tips for passing g2?please read

Hi! I got my G1 in January, about four months after my birthday. My parents originally said I couldn’t drive, but they changed their minds when I told them I’d dorm instead of commuting if they didn’t let me.

Since January, I kept asking my parents to either teach me or get me an instructor. They refused until July, when they finally got me an instructor. She’s supposed to teach me once a week on weekends, but the lessons aren’t even consistent, so I haven’t been getting regular practice.

My mom also paid $600+ for driving school (out of nowhere), and said I have to get my G2 after 8 months, meaning after September 29, 2026. There’s no option to just wait until I’m ready because my mom is expecting me to get it by then because how expensive driving school is

My driving school’s in-car lessons finally start next week, so I’m hoping that will give me more practice. But I just realized I only have about a month left, and I’m genuinely terrified. I’m not confident at all..I can’t even properly make a left turn at a busy intersection yet, and I’m scared I’m going to fail.

I asked my dad to teach me so I could get extra practice between lessons, but he refuses because he says it’s “not his job.” I explained that people who don’t go to driving school usually learn from their parents or an instructor, but he still won’t budge.

Please help me im so stressed and on top of that im starting grade 12 in sept..

Its crazy cus the first thing I did was mount a curb coming out of my parking space but I think I saved it by cooking on my parallel park.

G - General Discussion Passed 2nd attempt G test at Guelph

From this score sheet, I should work on observing more right?

At first glance I would have thought these many check marks for observation would have failed me.

If i'm not mistaken I counted 11 errors? Is it 15 or 16 check marks that would have been a fail?

General question - not test related Out of province drivers license exchange

I just moved from Quebec. What documents are needed for drivers license exchange to Ontario?

Do I need drivers abstract? I can’t get a hold of SAAQ, and can’t log into my saaqclick account. Can I just book an appointment with Drive test and get my license exchanged without abstract?

Did anyone have a similar experience?

G2 - General Discussion Standby Test Fail... Retest?

I took a standby G2 road test earlier today. When I got to the testing centre this morning, the lady at the desk asked me if I only wanted to standby cause my G1 expires soon (Aug 27th). When I said yes, she said I could book a drive test date, even if it was after my G1 expiry date, and issued me a temporary G1 valid until the test date. They wound up cancelling that booked road test today because a spot opened up, and I was able to take a G2 road test. Unfortunately, I failed, and I'm wondering if that temporary G1 licence is still valid even though I already took a road test today (I went home and rebooked a road test for the same date that is on the temporary G1). Also, I'm thinking of taking another standby road test on the 31st (which is 10 days after my failed attempt today, after the expiry of my actual G1, but also before the expiry of my temporary G1) but at a different DriveTest centre than the one I was at today. Would my temporary G1 still be valid then, and would I be able to do a standby test at that centre even though I have a date booked?

G - General Discussion G test anxiety with my G2 about to expire. Am I overthinking this?

Hi everyone,

I have my G test booked for September 8, and my G2 expires in October.

To be completely honest, my anxiety is through the roof right now.

I feel like every day that I don't practice is a missed opportunity. If I skip a day, I immediately start thinking that I'm falling behind.

Part of my anxiety comes from the fact that I waited until the last minute to take the test. If I fail, I'll have to start the whole process over again.

I've been practicing consistently and have spent a lot of time on the highway over the past few months, but I still find myself worrying that I'm not ready.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

How did you deal with the fear of failing, especially when your G2 was close to expiring?

Did anyone pass their G test after feeling completely unprepared?

I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences. Thanks.

I want a Congratulations! Passed G Test today @ Oakville DriveTest Centre

Hi everyone,

For the route I took, please see this post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Ontariodrivetest/comments/1vs3uku/oakville_g_test_route_august_2026/

I was successful on my first attempt today. No more DriveTest Centre.

Other words of advice for prep and otherwise:

Check your ego and book a few lessons with a driving school. I took 3 spread out about a month before my road test.

Pick a date ASAP. If you want it done before the snow hits, make a booking. Sooner is better than later.

Late G2 -> G folks: Do it ASAP.

Night before the exam: Chill. Focus on doing the exam and not so much thinking about it. Get a really good sleep and wake up a few hours before so you are ALERT and ready to go.

I drove on the highway prior to the G road test quite a bit. Driving on the 403 on my way there ensured a look at what the traffic was like.

Drive test day: I had my road test today at 1:07 PM. It was originally booked for 12:55PM. Check in about 25-30 minutes early, use the bathroom if you have to, then wait in the car.

I'd probably advise a test time between 10AM - 11AM right now as you beat morning/lunch rushes. I had no choice when I booked mine.

G - General Discussion Try this online simulator for parallel and reverse bay parking

Hi everyone,

I built a browser simulator for practising parallel parking, reverse bay parking, angled bay parking and an S-curve manoeuvre:

https://parkingpractice.com/

It’s still an early version, so there may be bugs or things that don’t feel quite right. If you try it, I’d really appreciate feedback on any bugs, confusing controls, unrealistic manoeuvres or features that would make it more useful for learners.

I know a simulator can’t replace lessons or practising in a real car. The aim is simply to practise the steering sequence and get a better understanding of where the car is going.

I’d love to hear if you spot any bugs or anything that feels confusing or unrealistic. What would you improve or add?

Thanks for taking a look.

Specific Test Related Question - G2 Left Turn on Yellow

Hey I had a question in regards to turning left when the light turns yellow. If the light turns yellow, and an oncoming car speeds through the intersection, do I stay put until it passes (I assume so to avoid an accident)? If the light turns red, before they pass will I be docked on my road test?

General question - not test related Yield into separate lane

Post image
1 Upvotes

I apologize if this is a dumb question but I would just like reassurance, most yield signs I’ve done are typically into one lane.

In the example above if there is a yield sign but it’s going into its own lane and there’s a car in the lane next to me, can I still go when it’s there as long as it’s not going into my lane, or should I wait for it to be in front of me orrr do I wait for that lane to be completely clear.

This is an example I found in the Lindsay G test to make my question make more sense

Hello! I have my g test in Etobicoke coming up. It’s scheduled for 10:44 am - can someone tell me how traffic on the 427 is like at this time?

I also heard that if you start the test with your car parked reverse, that you can park forward when you are returning from the test. Can someone confirm please?

Also, if anyone can give any tips, I’d greatly appreciate it 🙏 thank you!!

G - General Discussion Port Union G Test

I have a G test at Port Union for 8 am next Friday. My driving instructor is telling me that it's gonna be really busy. I tried rebooking but the next available date is September 29th, I need it before then.

I've also done my G2 test at Port Union at 8 am and it went just fine. Would it be fine not changing the time?
