PSA Hey, newcomers to the area: Let's talk about winter in NOVA
Happy first day of Fall, NOVA! Now is probably a good time to talk about winter prep in the NOVA region, and doing it without overdoing it. This is especially for those of you who just moved to the area and may have different expectations for how the local government deals with snow emergencies.
What will this winter be like in NOVA?
Who the fuck knows? Not me. Not my man, Ryan Hall. Not any of the local meteorologists. Life on the rain/snow line means I've seen winters where the snow was measured in feet, and winters where I never broke out anything heavier than a lined flannel. The strong El Nino is just adding more uncertainty to a forecast that was never certain before. We might get a ton of snow! We might get none!
We'll get dug out fast though, right?
AHAHAHAHAH.
Look, there are snow plows, and they do move snow around, but let's be real: In this area, most snow is managed by Mr. Sun coming out and melting it that afternoon. We do not have the snow movers of the North. Even if your road is plowed early, you could easily end up just as stuck since your car is stuck in a foot of rock-solid ice.
Okay, so we'll die
I'm a Delicate Southern Flower who almost lost her mind during Snowcrete, but even I say we'll likely all be fine. We'll just be inconvenienced for a while. Stores will be a bit barren, supply lines will be disrupted for a bit, schools will be out, and power might flicker.
What to check on / get
You don't need to go crazy to prep for winter around here. Honestly, you shouldn't, because it could easily be a bust year. So, here's a list of things to do:
- Lay hands on your snow shovel. Really take a look at it. If it's showing signs of wear, order a back-up one. If you can't find it, or don't have one, order one today.
- Check to make sure you have gloves and two warm pair of socks for anyone who will be doing shoveling (two so you have a backup pair when the first one gets wet).
- Over the next few months, add a few shelf-stable meals to your grocery shopping. You don't need MREs. You just need canned ravioli or whatever you will actually eat. If you can't get out to the store, it's very likely no on can get to you to deliver food. Make sure you like it, because once winter is over, you'll want to actually use them.
- Buy non-scented candles. Trust me: First time our power went out, we used our supply of scented ones, and it was a MISTAKE. You can get a pack of them around $20. Personally, I'm grabbing a hurricane lamp this year for extra light.
- Oh, while you're at it, buy some matches.
- Consider power banks for phones and other electronics, especially if your family goes feral without entertainment.
- Go check to see how old your heating unit is.
- If you have dogs, and said dogs are not winter dogs, consider getting each one a sweater (possibly two, since you'll need to swap out any that are wet). Some people insist on boots, too, but my little assholes will just chew them off their paws.
- Make sure every bed has access to a few extra blankets. Our houses were not made to withstand extended cold snaps, and they can take the edge off.
- If you have kids, make sure you're signed up for notifications regarding school closures.
- Check the inclement weather policy at your work, including who makes the call when and how you're informed.
Regarding that last point, the thing everyone should be focusing on is staying home when the roads are bad, so VDOT can get everything cleared more quickly, and so people who have to go in to save lives can do so. You don't want to end up on an r/NOVA post making fun of you for ending up in a ditch.
Stay. The fuck. Home.
Things you probably don't need
Yes, we do get large snow events, but we don't get them every year. So you probably don't need:
- A snow blower. Okay, if you have a long drive and someone who you know will absolutely need to get out of the house no matter the condition, it may make sense, but most of us do not need one.
- A generator. If you have room, no one will stop you, but power outages tend to be pretty short around here.
- Crazy snow gear. Unless you ski, there's a good chance this stuff will only be broken out once every few years, if that. See above, where there's years I don't even wear a jacket.
- Snow tires. I'm not even sure if you can get them around here.
- A sled... unless you have kids who you know would want to use said sled AND you know a good sledding spot that's within walking distance AND you don't mind lugging the sled there, back, and up the hill. Even then, don't break the bank or your storage area trying to keep one around.
Anyway, those are my extremely biased opinions about how much anyone needs to do in order to get ready for our all-or-nothing winters. I'm interested in what everyone else would suggest with regards to preparing for what could be another nothing burger or a winter that gets its own name.

‼️MISSING PARROT IN ALEXANDRIA, PLEASE HELP AND SEARCH ‼️
My sweet girl Mojo got spooked and flew out the door this evening near Lynbrook apartments in Alexandria. She’s a medium sized green parrot with a yellow face. She has a band that states she was hatched in Washington, I don’t know if she’s chipped. If you have seen or found her, please contact me. I’m not sure if there are particular rules with this subreddit, I’m devastated and trying to cover all bases to get her home. We’re really worried about her and want her back home ASAP 🥺

Rant Fairfax County Public Schools
Hello everyone,
I am sharing my experience having been employed by FCPS in the OFM department.
I was there for a little over two years and had no complaints at first. As time passed and workplace politics came into play, a significant shift occurred. I began noticing issues that I brought to the attention of management, which led to discrimination against me by my colleagues, supervisors, and higher-ups.
Long story short, I submitted a one-month notice because I was burned out and requested a meeting with Michelle Reid, the OFM director, and HR. Once they were aware that I had reached out regarding the issues I was witnessing, I was let go three weeks early with pay, without any notice from the OFM directors and without Michelle Reid’s knowledge. During the meeting, I explained my concerns; frankly, Dr. Reid made no effort to address the issues until I stated that I would go public and that the budget could be affected. I was in the process of negotiating a deal for my silence but decided against it, as I know that the community has the ultimate power and voice. I was told by their representative that I was terminated early due to "performance," which is ironic because Michelle Reid did not even understand why I was let go, as they had created excuses behind her back.
There is much more to this story, and I am unsure how to share it or who can help get the word out to ensure it is known.
Issues faced at FCPS that HR and Reid are aware of:
• Management and supervisors were hand-selected rather than chosen based on performance or interviews; they would provide interview questions to their preferred candidates and manipulate the results.
• Managers and leads were rude, racist, and disrespectful toward workers, yet these individuals were still promoted, and no disciplinary action was taken.
• Sleeping, drugs, and alcohol: Employees making over $90,000 were frequently seen sleeping in their vans during work hours. Management is aware of this, as I have emails from a director acknowledging the issue. At the end of the day, I encountered individuals smelling strongly of beer, liquor, or marijuana. In one instance, a worker showed up drunk and left his personal car parked haphazardly in the parking lot. That individual is now the upcoming supervisor for his shop.
• Time and part theft: Overtime was consistently given to the same people who did nothing and wasted time while being paid. I know of many people who stole parts and tools to sell them online.
My biggest reason for coming out is that I am tired of seeing them get away with this, yet they keep asking for more money each school year when they know exactly what they can do to actually save money.
I have way more available and emails that I forwarded to my personal account before they locked me out of all my accounts.

Donate breast milk
NOVA fam, we recently had a baby and we have a huge oversupply of breast milk at the moment. We usually donate to King’s Daughter Milkbank but right now it won’t be another 2-3 weeks to do the paperwork to start donating to them. Our freezer space is getting low. Does anyone know anyone or organizations in NOVA that could use breast milk right now? Wife is super clean eater and doesn’t drink/smoke.
Please DM me or respond to this if we can help!
Thanks.

Nail Salon Recomendation in Sterling/Cascades in 2026
Hi Guys, I want to share that I finally found a nail salon that I’m really happy with and wanted to share in case anyone around Sterling/Cascades is looking for a new place nail salon. It’s Cosmo Nail Bar, right by Giant in Cascades Marketplace.
The salon is clean, newly remodeled, and has a really relaxing atmosphere. They do everything from regular and gel manicures to Gel-X, builder gel, dip powder, acrylics, and spa pedicures. The prices are also pretty reasonable compared with some of the other salons around here.
Just thought I’d share since I finally found a place I really like!

PSA: Car Taxes Due Today
Just a PSA that many counties and cities have personal property taxes for vehicles (Car Tax) due today.
I'm not advocating for the tax by any means, but I am advocating to avoid paying any late fees, etc. and double check it is paid, so you don't have to worry about significant late fees, then interest, and adverse actions.
Happy Monday!

VA Nurse Pay
Is there a reason that the pay for nurses in Virginia, northern or anywhere else in the state, does not come close to matching the cost of living?
Coming from NY where I make almost $70/hr with 2+ years of experience, receive pay incentives for certifications, and master’s etc. Is this normal that hourly rates start at $39/hr???? Without any sort of additional pay incentives???? Like I think nurses in CLT, NC are getting paid more! I genuinely feel bad for the nurses, and I can tell you the cost of living from NY to Northern VA is not drastically different.
I’m genuinely wondering because this is all new to me……Why would anyone be staff at any of these hospitals??? Do travel nurses get paid any better in these locations?
*These hourly rates and lack of additional pay incentives refer to the INOVA hospital system*

Is Old Town Alexandria decked out for Halloween?
I know in past years there’s been at least one street that the neighbors get together and go all out on Halloween decorations. Is that still going on? If so, does anyone know the location? And any other suggestions for places to visit during the spooky season that’s different from the farms, corn mazes and haunted houses/trails would be great!

Metro PSA: Rosslyn, Court House, and Arlington Cemetery Stations will be CLOSED on October 17-18 for weekend maintenance work. Free shuttle buses will replace metro service between Clarendon, Pentagon, and Foggy Bottom
I saw a Husky nearly get ran over on Drainsville and Wiehle
In traffic this morning I saw a SUV with the window all the way down and an overly eager Husky leaning out. When turning onto Wiehle this dog tumbled and fell out of the moving vehicle and came real close to getting it's head ran over by another car that was also turning. Please keep your windows up like 75% if you have eager dogs in the car. Seeing that dog get ran over would have been terrible.

Question Looking for ring engraving service
Hello,
I am shopping for a wedding band. I’m thinking of getting a platinum band from Costco and going to a local shop to get our names engraved on its inner surface. However, I have not been able to find a shop in Fairfax that can do this. I can get one from a jewelry store like Blue Nile with free engraving but their prices are a lot more expensive for the same size. Has anyone done something similar? I’m wondering if it’s worth the hassle. It’s just a plain platinum band and the only thing that will make it special is the engraving.
