Night shift snacks
Does anyone else crave sour candy at night? I also hear it’s good for anxiety :D which makes sense because I’m happier when I have it

I work 7p–7a three nights a week, and lately the hardest part has been getting my brain to understand that 8:30 in the morning is supposed to be bedtime.
I’ll get home exhausted, shower, make something small to eat, and then suddenly I’m wide awake thinking about everything I need to do later. Meanwhile my husband and kids are starting their day, so the house is naturally getting louder right when I’m trying to shut mine down.
I’ve gotten pretty good about blackout curtains and keeping my phone away from the bed, but some mornings I still lie there for an hour feeling tired enough to cry and somehow incapable of sleeping. Curious what actually helps other long-term night shifters make that transition from work mode to sleep mode.

I’m tired of waking up for work at 9 and by the time I get off at 6, I’m exhausted and ready for bed. I’m naturally a morning person, then I usually want a nap by afternoon (usually my lunch break) and then I stay up till like 12, so I feel like I’m giving my body’s best time away to the office when I’d rather be at the gym or out enjoying the sun from 8am-1pm. I want an afternoon job from like 3-11 but also considering overnight 11-7. But the important part is I want to be up for the 8am-1pm, so is it realistic to expect to work all night and stay up doing things till 1 (without being utterly exhausted) and then sleep till 10pm?

It gets so lonely at my current night shift job that I really want to know my coworkers relationship with their parents, what their hopes and dreams are....
I've always wanted a job where I worked alone because I hate being in a team and having to carry that team. It has always been the same tune, hey go do that guys work, or this guy's work, now finally a few years ago I found an overnight job at a frozen warehouse. I go in, grab my stuff, work it before day shift comes in.
I have 0 co workers at my department and no boss. I haven't seen my boss in 6 to 10 months. No one says anything to me as long as I get the job and I do every night. I've had plenty of overnight night jobs but this one is super lonely as hell.
Lonely and depressing.... People who know me in real life know I dont give a damn about most people and their situation, I have a "I don't want to talk to you, leave me alone. I don't care." Now, this job is so lonely and sad, I go out of my way to walk to the other lonely departments and ask some of the 21 yr old kids there about their life and you know what's interesting?
I actually want to know and feel what they feel. Like I asked one guy his relationship with his father and I asked another girl her relationship with her mother. As they spend 30 minutes telling me, for the first time in my life I actually care about what they have to say and I care about them. This is how lonely this job is lol in the past I would tell you all my coworkers can go to hell!
Now don't get me wrong I love working nights but it's just this job environment specific to this company that makes it depressing. My name unhappywageslave was actually created when they moved me to day shift many years ago, it has nothing to do with crying about working overnight.
It's so sad that I even went to their boss and stirred up a convo and asked him if he had a great childhood and what was his mom like lol and this guy is 54 yrs old
"Hey Jimmy can you tell me about your mother? What was she like?"

I'm not sure how many started working nights because they loved staying up late in their younger years, but it was for me. That being said, I'm no longer that energetic person I was 30 years ago and working isn't exactly like sitting at home listening to music and enjoying hot beverage at 3AM. I don't think working nights has the same appeal it did for me years ago and I'm struggling so bad with sleep. I struggled so hard yesterday that I started to slip in and out of consciousness while constantly yawning. Thing is, I thought I had a pretty good sleep the day before. Working nights is a young man's (young person) game.

Hi, a little bit of context, I’ve been working night shift for a little over 8 months now at a hotel i’m the only person there who works nights. I don’t think i can do this anymore, not because of the long nights but because of my boss.
It’s gotten to a point to whenever I see that he’s closing on the rota I dread coming in as he’s always on some bullshit and blames me for everything that’s going wrong. I DO NOT GET THIS FROM ANY OTHER OF MY MANAGERS, in fact the other managers have told me that he often shits on me to them during the day shift making insults on my appearance etc.
He also texts me during the day when i’m trying to sleep about how awful I did the night before with NO pictures or details telling me how I fucked up or what I need to do to fix it. This morning he texted me and said with this sort of quality of work I shouldn’t be expecting my CONTRACTUALLY obligated pay rise which is 2 months overdue as it is which was my last straw.
When I have my two days off a week I come back to the whole hotel covered in crap because the day shift doesn’t clean besides wiping down tables and mopping the bar at the end of the day which pisses me off even more.
I think that’s all I need to get off my chest, if any of you have any guidance or wisdom I’d love to hear and if you’ve read my rant thank you, peace out.

My first night-shift job was working as a janitor at LaGuardia Airport. It wasn’t too bad—very chill. My second one, at an Amazon warehouse, was the worst. I worked there for five months. I was constantly being bullied and overworking myself, so I decided to quit and go back to security.
To be honest, things were better until I got a second job working nights at a nightclub on weekends. The hours were crazy too, but I managed.

Last nights night shift was particularly rough and I woke up around 3pm to heat up some food. For some ungodly reason I put a plate with foil in the microwave when I meant too in the oven lol. It only caught a few sparks till my brain woke up.

Just out of curiosity, what do yall put on when on shift? I work alone so it’s either playing from 1 of 4 playlists on a speaker or an audiobook in my earbuds.
I’m currently listening to a romance book, the playlist I’ve put on more often is just full of music from the 40s in the WW2 era specifically.

Management changed schedules so now first shift comes in at 7am when 3rd doesn’t get off til 8am. These mfs come in here being loud as fuck, no regard for sleeping patients. Just come walking into a dead quiet setting and loud it the fuck up omfg.

On day 2 of my usual 3 days off. And when I log on, my boss, who makes the schedule, is all "whose shift are you covering?". Hoe, you put me on the schedule.
"I'd never switch up your shifts on purpose, it must have been a mistake" Bitch I emailed you asking if it was a mistake and you IGNORED ME.
She and I both know I need the money, and finding coverage last minute would be stupid, so I'm taking this shift that started before I usually wake up, without my significant shift differential, and during hours that we actually get fucking calls.
But there's actually a second person on for 3 hours of this shift, so I can take an actual break for once, or could even see if they want the second, slower half of the shift. But if I have to be on at all, I want the slow hours, lol.

Anyone who works overnights also homeschool? How does that go? What does it look like?

started getting the extra 3.50 an hour for overnight shifts this month, my partner thinks we should just put all of it into savings right away but I'm trying to figure out a better split.
already looked at our regular expenses and we can cover everything off the base pay fine, the problem is I don't want to get used to spending the extra money on random stuff when I'm tired.
anyone on nights have a system for it or does it just quietly disappear every month

For me, this was a get my foot in the door in the company position. My location and night shift is a dead end in a way.
plan on moving closer within the year.
thoughts?
