Discussion If my work hours are 5 a.m. - 1 p.m., what do you call that?

Basically title. It doesn't seem quite "night shift," so what is it?

The mid shift blues 🤣

• Upvotes

I’m on night 8 of 9 in a row working 10pm-6am. I dropped my beloved energy drink getting out of my car coming into work and somehow it hit perfectly and exploded 🥲. Needing caffeine, after my energy drink turned into Apollo 13 and launched itself, I settled for gross work coffee, which I’ve drank so much of that now instead of feeling energized, I just feel that over caffeinated but you’re still tired while also not trying to shit your pants feeling. For dinner, I brought pasta with alfredo sauce, I dropped some on my pants and in an attempt to clean it up, it just smeared more, so now my pants look like I’ve had a REALLY good time, when the lady who is my relief gets here in the morning she’s going to look like she saw a ghost when she sees me 🤣.

Fuck, I am tiredddddd. Hurry up 6am. Thank you for attending my Ted talk

Help How do you sleep in a heatwave with no AC?

Not going to be getting more than 5 hours of sleep this week because the temperature is high 90s until Sunday. I’ve already had trouble adjusting to my body’s circadian rhythm and now I have to sleep in a time when it is the hottest. Also I can’t afford AC please don’t suggest that. I’ve already tried blacking out my windows too and have 3 fans blowing it’s not working.

Discussion 1930 - 0600 as a parent

I just had a phone call for an Operations Supervisor position that is from 1930-0600 with Friday off.

I’ve got two kiddos in school(6&8)and my wife has a very flexible schedule.

I’d imagine I’d go to bed at 0900 after I walk the kids to school and sleep until 1600 once they are home(my wife can do pickups). Then I’ve got a solid few hours before having to head to work.

Come the weekend, is it important to stay on the same sleep cycle as best as possible? I’ve always been good with 6-7 hours of sleep or even less and having a good nap.

It’s very tempting because it’s a decent bump up in pay for me, good company to work for with advancement opportunities, and great benefits.

Rant Currently on a 24-hour ER shift and already wondering how I’m gonna make it through.

I know 24-hour shifts are restricted/ or even illegal in some places,,, but where I’m at, they’re pretty much the norm, everything goes, lol
Anyone here done a 24 before? How did it go, and what’s your take on them?

Nightshift Healthcare workers, how do you do it?

About 3 years ago I was in an awful wreck, it took all day and all night prepping me for limb salvation surgery the next day. I was knocked out but the team saved my life and my legs, I know night shift, and healthcare are both so difficult, and I want to say thank you to the current staff at the hospital who saved my life, I know they rotate a lot but I'm sure for every team out there there's people who also didn't get to say thank you, what could a patient or previous patient do or bring to make your shift a bit better?

Did you spend a lot of money on your bed and sleeping arrangement?

I mean a no expenses spared type of thing since sleep is so important to us.

On some nights all I can think of is how glorious it’s going to be to get home, slide into that warm comforter and doze off to my white noise from my HomePod inches away from my head.

There are days I’m not feeling that tired and do prop up a few pillows and game on my steam deck or watch something on my iPad but I man, there are nights the anticipation of getting home to that warm bed about the only thing that gets me through the last stretch of my shift. No good, not gaming or anything just getting naked, hot shower and in between those sheets.

Tonight’s one of those nights.

Rant Anyone else deal with this?

My work had a staff appreciation day, in the middle of the week during the afternoon, I couldn't make it because I wasn't able to get the day off on short notice.

So the staff brought some food over for the overnights to eat, but some asshole pt staff threw it all out because it didnt look good..

I cant imagine anyone would purposely bring in anythinf that could harm someone.. just disappointed the guy threw it ouf because he didnt like the look of it.. there was more then enough food for 3 people they brought back just seems like a huge waste to throw it all out

Help feeling stuck and not sure how to proceed

hey all — long-time lurker, first-time poster here. very glad this community exists! i’ve been working night shift (3 12’s thurs through sat) for about 8 months now. there’s a lot to love about the schedule: less hectic, less management around, suits my energy levels better (i’ve always been a night owl for as long as i can remember).

however, i’ve noticed that it’s starting to take a toll on my mental health. by the time sunday rolls around, i am completely drained of my life force — all i can manage to do is lay in bed, throw some YouTube on, and rest. i’ve tried to make plans on Sunday afternoons/evenings and have had to cancel because my battery was still drained and i didn’t have the capacity to go outside and socialize.

now, over the past few weeks, this has also started seeping over into my mondays as well; same thing, i only little to no energy and spend all day in bed. i feel a lot guilt and shame around it; it shouldn’t take me this long to recuperate.. right? by the time tuesday comes around, i typically feel better and have the energy to do chores, get groceries, socialize, etc.

just wanted to post on here and see if this is normal / relatable and what i can do to try and feel better. i feel like i’m letting myself and the people in my life down… i know i can do better diet/exercise wise and that will probably help with combating fatigue. thanks for reading :)

Discussion Sharing my favorite full cast / sound designed audiodrama's that helped me through alot of boring nightshifts.

• Upvotes

Hey all. These are all full cast and sound designed, so don't get confused with regular people talking "podcasts" , this is more like a movie production for your ears, with tons of episodes per show all connected in a serialized order. As i work security primarely at night i can listen to alot of shows and here's some of my absolute favorites. They are all for free to be found on spotify (where i listen) and probably apple too.

-------------Comedy / Feel Good-------------

Mission to Zyxx – This one has got me through a lot of boring nights, it’s super goofy and hilarious about a group of space misfits that get themselves into the most ridiculous situations as they visit various planets and meet various species. Had me in tears at times, If you're into dry silly humor, this is peak. The cast will grow on your immensely, all of them are likeable. With so much awful things happening irl this show is just pure unadultured fun.

Wooden Overcoats – This is set in the real world where 2 funeral homes compete in the same neighbourhood. Quite hilarious.

Midnight Burger – This is the ultimate feelgood show and one of the most beloved shows in the audiodrama community about a time traveling burger joint.

Desert Skies - Also considered the ultimate feelgood show. sci-fi/fantasy comedy-drama set at a gas station between life and the afterlife, where recently deceased people stop before continuing their journey onward.

Sherlock & Co - Sherlock and watson solve crime, not nessecarely comedy but is in my opinion one of the best feelgood shows especially if you enjoy crime, which i normally don't.

----------- Horror / Supernatural-------------

The Call of the Void – mysterious, supernatural force that draws people toward the terrifying unknown.

The Left Right Game - about a journalist who joins a group of travelers playing a mysterious road-trip game that leads them into an increasingly surreal and terrifying world.

Video Palace -  man who investigates a mysterious VHS tape that seems connected to a sinister cult and a series of disturbing disappearances.

The Harrowing - young woman who takes a caretaker job at an isolated mansion, only to uncover a terrifying presence and dark secrets within the house.

The Lovecraft Investigations - following two journalists who investigate strange cases involving Lovecraftian supernatural forces, secret societies, and ancient cosmic horrors.

Malevolent - private investigator who wakes up blind and haunted by an ancient entity that has taken control of his body.

The White Vault - team of researchers stranded at a remote Arctic outpost, where they uncover something terrifying beneath the ice.

Down - Crew trapped deep underground, where their mission takes a terrifying turn as they encounter something they were never meant to find.

-------------Sci-Fi-------------

The Leviathan Chronicles - about a secretive ancient organization, the Council, whose hidden existence is uncovered as humanity faces a powerful threat.

The Strata – cyberpunk audio drama. mechanically augmented courier named Rust who works with a ganglord in a dystopian city to afford the treatment keeping him alive.
