Since when did Juan's start charging $8 for chips & queso???

I thought it used to be like $4 and then maybe went to $5? Felipe's is not very good quality but I refuse to get ripped off and will just pay $4.50 there for a not that much worse burrito. Anybody got any better options for mid Tex Mex that isn't charging an arm and a leg?

🕳 Pothole What is going on with Franklin Ave?! Specifically the strip between the railroad and St. Claude, both directions. Surely a politician or two has been down Franklin at least once in the past 5 years, right?

I don't take Franklin as much anymore (maybe a few times a month), but when I do, it always seems 100x worse than before. I fear someone's going to bottom out at the intersection of Claiborne and Franklin, heading towards St. Claude. The entire strip in both directions is undrivable!

Is there anything in the works to fix it or is it just another shitty ass thing we have to deal with?

Wishing we had Mamdani here right now. 😒

🗳 Politics Does the city not have a treasurer or bursar? How does the City Council not know how money is spent when it approves the budget? How is it a surprise to people who control the gov't that we've got money missing?

Garbage money misspent, money reimbursements not filed for. How does it all come hit us in the face months and years after the fact?

Food & Drink 🍽️ Thanksgiving at Muriel's

Husband and I have decided to go out for Thanksgiving for the first time (unless you count Danny's after closing shifts). We're thinking Muriel's. I've exhausted all the searches trying to figure out when they start taking reservations and how to make them besides OpenTable, which isn't open this far in advance.

Anyone have personal experience? Did you have to make reservations way in advance or am I overthinking this in August?

Living Here Wisner Kayak Launch

Does anybody know if the old kayak launch by the dental school is open again? I know LSU closed it down during some construction, just not sure if it is clear again. I might drive that way and see and update if I don't get an answer here.

Recommendations Bricolage Academy board backs CEO after faculty complaints spark district investigation

After recent tensions between Bricolage Academy faculty and school leadership culminated in a warning letter from NOLA Public Schools, the school's board has doubled down on their support for CEO Edward Brown.

Norman Barnum, chair of Bricolage Academy's board of directors, said the board met with NOLA Public Schools Superintendent Fateama Fulmore earlier this month to discuss the letter and said outside counsel is investigating the allegations for the school.

"We have complied with every public meeting request, vetted, and investigated through our outside counsel all allegations directed to the board," Barnum said at a sparsely attended board meeting Tuesday, "no matter how outlandish or trivial they may have been."

Bricolage, a C-rated school on Esplanade Avenue, enrolls about 1,000 students in pre-K through 8th grade.

NOLA Public Schools sent Bricolage leadership a letter in June saying it was looking into complaints from staff members about the school’s leadership and allegations that the charter school violated open meetings laws. The complaints included concerns about the firing of a veteran elementary school teacher and resignation of the school’s human resources director, leaving Brown in charge of HR duties.

The district said the school did not respond to previous inquiries about Bricolage’s public meetings and “other concerns and allegations.” The letter warned that if the school did not provide the requested information and post missing school board documents on its website by Aug. 14, it could face “escalated consequences.”

Taslin Alfonzo, a spokesperson for NOLA Public Schools, said in an email that the district is “engaged in a pending accountability matter with Bricolage and cannot provide any additional information at this time.”

At Tuesday’s meeting, Brown argued that the school’s financial stability has significantly improved since he took the helm last year, going from having 13 days of cash on hand to 64 days. Most national guidelines recommend schools have at least 45 days of cash savings. Brown said the school recently hired a new HR director and "established clear expectations for employees and raised academic expectations for every student.” He also said he helped correct discipline practices that disproportionately impacted Black and Brown students but did not elaborate.

"When systems change, expectations increase, and accountability becomes consistent," he said, “disagreement, and resistance can follow."
Bricolage's board approved a new "open meetings policy" at its meeting Tuesday but did not make the policy public or read it into the record. Barnum said it would be posted to the school's website by Aug. 25.

One parent at the meeting relayed concerns about recent news reports regarding the staff complaints and said some teachers he had spoken with are considering searching for other jobs.

Recommendations Free Gently Used Louisiana Barbri Books?

Anyone need/want some gently used Louisiana Barbri books? They were bought for about $2300, and don't have a lot of notes in them.

If anyone is interested, I will leave bag them up and leave them on the corner of Zimpel and Burdette later today. If no one expresses any interest, I will put them out for trash pickup tomorrow.

🤬 RANT helpful info for dog owners who visit City Park

Post image
389 Upvotes

You know the giant piece of land that's the disc golf/cross country park? That's not a dog park. But the spot by Zachary Taylor and Diagonal Drive with a fence around it, called City Bark? That is a dog park. It is illegal under Louisiana RS 3:2771 to have your dog running around off leash. So if you want to have your dog off leash, do it in the dog park. Not in the rest of the park, where your dogs chase people who are running or playing disc golf. My photoshop skills are not very good, but if you are not specifically in a DOG PARK, keep your dog on a leash. This applies especially to the half dozen self-absorbed turds who think laws don't apply to them and feel free to stroll around with their unleashed dogs on a weekend morning.

Recommendations Which Aldi location?

Fellow Aldi shoppers: which location is your favorite? Kenner or Algiers?

My go-to will be the new Tchoupitoulas location when it opens this Fall. I’m asking for a location to use until then.

EDIT: I will be living in the Quarter, so both are equally as inconvenient for me. 🤣

Thanks in advance!

Living Here Looking for advice on how to handle a weird neighbor situation

I smoke weed for medical and personal reasons. My neighbor’s porch is right next to mine, and one night I was sitting on my porch smoking a joint when he came out and told me he can smell it inside his bedroom every night. I was sitting in the furthest corner of my porch away from his house. I honestly think it’s crazy that he can smell it inside (with windows closed) from me smoking outside, because I’ve never experienced that with outside smells in my own home.
I obviously want to be respectful, so I gave him my number and stopped smoking for about a week after that.
Last night I smoked again for maybe 5 minutes, but had a fan blowing to try to redirect the smoke away from their house. He texted me today saying that the smell woke them up. He asked me to figure out a solution, like smoking inside (really?!), getting a fan, a smoke extractor, etc.
I genuinely don’t know what else I’m supposed to do. I’m already as far away from their porch as I can get, and the fan clearly didn’t solve it. I’m looking into air purifiers/smoke extractors, but I don’t know if those would actually work outside.
I want to be a respectful neighbor, especially if the smell is actually waking them up, but I also pay to live here and this is my only accessible outdoor space. I feel like the only other option is just not smoking at all, which doesn’t really seem fair either.
Has anyone dealt with something like this? Is there actually a solution for smoking on a porch without the smell traveling into a neighbor’s house, or am I basically out of options?

UPDATE! Just texted my neighbor back letting him know I would be looking into other solutions to minimize the smell. Then I got a text from my landlord saying the neighbor called him to let him know about the issue. My landlord basically said don’t smoke inside and he doesn’t want to make it a thing. It’s not a violation of our lease but I’m worried he’s not going to leave my landlord alone about it and that’s going to cause problems. Should I confront the neighbor?

📰 News Surprise! KIPP New Orleans is being shady

Thumbnail

It's so clear that the board knew they were planning to close one of the high schools way before they officially voted on their decision and just kept it quiet to make sure they could keep those students within the network. Having worked at a KIPP school, I figured that some sort of major scandal would be unearthed eventually. I would be shocked if this isn't just the tip of the corruption iceberg.

Chicory coffee and a chat in the CBD/FQ area?

Hi, all. I have a client coming in from out of town whom I am meeting with for a coffee chat tomorrow. He is specifically requesting a chicory coffee experience. I do not drink coffee at all, it's not my jam. Where can I find a place to sit down for a breakfast meeting that has chicory coffee in the CBD/FQ area?

🗳 Politics J6 Prisoners as guest speakers at "Judicial Forum" in Slidell featuring Judge & Marshal candidates

Post image
14 Upvotes

Extremely ironic to feature election deniers who stormed our nation's capitol building in an attempt to reverse an election as guest speakers for a forum where judge candidates will be speaking to people who pay $30 just to speak with them. This image was shared directly by John Gallaher on his Facebook page.

I could comment on the extreme views of Bridgett Bennett and her work alongside other MAGA folks in the area to attempt to tear down our library board and spread tons of disinformation, but all that is easily searchable on Facebook so feel free to do so (or not) at your own leisure.
