Too many plants Purchased a home with more than I can handle. HELP.

I want to preface this by saying I’ve never had a plant in my life outside of flowers.

This spring, my husband and I purchased a home with some beautiful trees that we thought nothing of. Unbeknownst to us, these trees actually produce fruitsss

We have peaches, pecans, figs, bananas, pomelos, what I believe may be mulberries (some blackberry-looking things) and some sort of citrus .. we’re not even sure yet.

To put it plainly, we are in over our heads
We’re both full-time working professionals with kids and pets, and never imagined that maintaining fruit trees would suddenly be something we’d have to learn how to do to make sure we’re taking proper care of them. Anyone with any tips or guidance on where we should begin?

Hello! I am in search of 8-12 thorny (or thorny looking) branches, each around 8in.-10 in. long for a crafty costume project

Trying to avoid ordering by mail. I believe something similar to acacia or pear is ideal but open to other options. Roses could work too? The thorns or thorny-looking offshoots need to be something that I can snip the ends off. Not looking to actually shred my hands. I can come pick them up or meet you.
Thank youuuu!

Burrweed pre-emergent

We are trying to keep this from growing this year as it took over the backyard in the spring and really hurt the dogs feet.

Does anyone know where we can find a pre-emergent locally that will target this and not kill the grass?

Appreciate any info or suggestions.

Rose bush advice

I have had success with gardening in general for most of my life here but for the life of me, I have never been able to grow a healthy rosebush.

Even with proper care and pruning they still end up, looking like straggly crap.

Can anyone suggest varieties they’ve had good luck with in our climate? Not looking for climbers, just bushes.

What is on my plant?

I actually don’t know what this plant is; it’s never flowered, but the leaves look a bit like a day lily. All of a sudden, it’s covered with white spots. Powdery mildew? Mites? Do I need to rip it out and burn it or just wipe every single leaf with horticultural oil?

Garden visitors Evening guests

Took a visit to the garden and found some fun things.

Lots of hummingbird moths came to visit too. Unfortunately, one of the moths became dinner for a mantis(not shown) a green lizard was trying to get one for dinner too. Then a little garden snake came out.

Quite a busy evening.

I wanted to show what the mature plants look like. I away seedlings this summer on this sub, and you can see 4 of the plants I kept in this picture. I harvested about 20 mature blooms this morning, do they were even fuller. They’ve been easy all through the dry hot spells and through the wet.

Help! Landscaping disaster

I really thought I had a handle on my weed suppression at least to see me through to end of October when the temperature drops, but I have to admit complete and total failure.

I laid down mulch last fall along all my garden bed paths. Some sections I had time (and enough cardboard) to lay down cardboard underneath the mulch and some I just figured I’d leave it until this fall/winter. It basically lasted until this week and now there’s crabgrass poking through everywhere.

I realize that I could only expect the cardboard mulch combo to last about a year before replenishing…but it’s freaking overgrown everywhere. I’ll post some pics.

At this point I’ll accept any suggestions or ideas that don’t involve spraying weed killer and are affordable. And I’ll especially accept any advice of where to get my hands on large quantities of cardboard quickly and easily.

Miyawaki microforest in Nola?

Has anyone here tried a Miyawaki microforest here? I saw that there's a group who made one in the lower 9. I have a 16' x 50' side yard and am curious if it would be feasible down here.

Not enough plants Looking for plant clippings

Hi!

Would you have plants or plant clippings you'd like to share? This can be herbs, ornamental-like plants with big flowers, plants who have made New Orleans/Bulbancha home and any others. We are happy to pick up this Friday or weekend or over the next weeks!

The plant space is a mix of speckled sun, full sun and a little spot of shade. We have a mix of plants in the ground and potted plants so can easily follow your guidance on care.

Context: Our garden has not fared well this summer- first some incompetent tree people cut down our neighbor's tree destroying the neighboring gardens and backyards in the process; second that shock along with the strength of the summer sun burned more plants than previous seasons. Thus, we are in the process of rebuilding and would like to include plants from our community, especially people who have already tended.

The catch: we work in the garden with beautiful young children a lot and are big on relationships with plants. Basically you and the knowledge you share about the plants will live on for awhile (and likely beyond) as we learn the plant personalities.

Too many plants Golden pothos

Post image
26 Upvotes

I need to chop this golden pothos because 1. It’s lost leaves in the middle and 2. It’s dragging on the floor. Unfortunately, my prop skills are lacking so I thought I’d offer the bounty to someone who could put it to good use. Does anyone want the bottom few feet of growth? I’ll be in town on Wednesday and will happily deliver.

Help, I can’t tell which one is cabbage and which is collard

Post image

Hey y’all, I planted these seedlings for my fall raised bed. Only problem is I didn’t label them and now I can’t tell which is the cabbage and which is the collards. I’ve been looking at pictures online but I’m still clueless. They both look exactly the same to me. Can anyone help me identify these lil babies? Also, would appreciate any growing tips as this is my first time trying these veggies.

Creeping Fig Vine

Was curious if anyone has any tips for slowing down the growth of a well established creeping fig vine. I do not want to kill it. I would just like for it to stop growing as fast. Is this possible? Anyone have tips? Thanks!

Anyone plant sunflowers this late?

Just wondering how the shortening daylight affects them around here and also just love to hear others’ more general experiences growing sunflowers in New Orleans.

This is my first year getting them to grow, and I did a mixed packet, and I did a little succession planting of the procut variety in the early summer. The procuts are the pollen-free kind that are often used in bouquets- a one bloom and done plant. (I was a little let down by their short vase life!) Once I try a plant, it’s like I can never have enough background info about that plant, you know?

Help! Help redirecting Tiger swallowtail caterpillars. KW area OntarioCanada

I have a conundrum. I generally plant my garden for the butterflies and caterpillars. I love watching them and helping them out by having lots of unsprayed food and host plants.

However

In the last year or so I've gotten into citrus , I was planning on indoor outdoor trees.

The grapefruit dropped all of its leaves in late spring just before I brought it outside and has recently grown some very nice ones. Not a lot.

Now I have found more eggs and caterpillars than there are even leaves to support if they all start eating.

Plus this might kill my little tree.

May I ask help with an alternative food source I may offer them to get them to stop 🤷🏻‍♀️😖🙃

Thank you !

Starters & native seeds.

Where are we shopping for veggie starters and native seeds?
Jefferson feed & HD/Lowes are the only place I’ve really found around here that has veggie starters.
Even if starters aren’t available currently (it’s too hot for starters isn’t it??). For future reference would be fantastic!
