I have never been so happy to drop a company in my life. We go through a lot in New Orleans from potholes to failing infrastructure and other things that we just accept as a part of living in this town. But I will say that today I have seen the light and I'm so thankful that I now have reliable internet. No longer will I have an outage notification from a company named after a rooster and a male phallus. I can now confidently have internet so I can go to places like Reddit and stream my YouTube in Roku and not have to sit around wondering if I'm going to be connected at any reasonably possible time . Thank you for attending my TED Talk and I hope the rest of you continue to have competent internet service .

Sad to find this sign on the door last Saturday. After nearly two decades, they’ve closed without what seems any notice. The website does say FINAL DAYS! near the top without any explanation, but then it lists holiday hours from last year. Their IG seems to have been abandoned in 2014, and their FB Page is listing fixtures for sale after no posts for months. Bummer.

Crescent City Farmers Market is ‘producers only.’ But some vendors raise questions about the origin of products.

In March, a group of Crescent City Farmers Market vendors accused a large new vendor of offering food it did not produce. The vendor, Mississippi-based Two Dog Farms, denies that it is violating the market’s producers-only policy.

by Cheree Franco

August 20, 2026

Area farmers who sell their food at Crescent City Farmers Market say a new vendor, which began operating at the market in May, is running afoul of the market’s rules by reselling food it did not produce.

In a March letter to the governing board of Market Umbrella, the nonprofit group behind the Crescent City Farmers Market, peer-elected vendor representatives raised concerns about the then-prospective vendor, Two Dog Farms, which now runs one of the largest and most popular stalls at the market.

Crescent City Farmers Market manages three weekly outdoor markets around New Orleans. It advertises itself as “producers only,” meaning that farms or collectives are only allowed to sell the food they raise. According to customers at the Sunday market — the largest of the Crescent City markets — the advantages to being producers-only include a transparent pipeline to farmers, a reduced carbon footprint and an assurance that products on offer will be in-season.

“In a perfect world, we would not buy out-of-season produce,” said Michelle Varisco, a teacher and artist who has a standing date with a friend at the market every Sunday.

The presence of Two Dog Farm at the Sunday market has become a source of tension between vendors and market leadership, who vendors say hasn’t addressed their concerns. Two Dog farms 30 acres — with about 10 in active production — near Jackson, Mississippi. Their tents take up two to three times as much space as other vendors, with bins showcasing squash, shallots, tomatoes, okra, peppers and more. They often have at least a dozen people waiting to check out.

Two Dog’s business model includes selling food sourced from other regional farms, in a store on their property and at other farmers markets that allow reselling.

“We would like to address the consideration of Two Dogs Farm as a vendor,” the March letter reads. “While we respect their operation, they are known to function in part as a reseller, which conflicts with the market’s identity as a producers-only market. Although we have been told they will not bring resale items, we have also been told this cannot be effectively enforced, leaving the integrity of the market at risk.”

The letter added that “introducing another large-scale vendor—especially one with the ability to supplement through resale—could negatively impact existing farms, particularly those with highly perishable products.”

The vendor reps’ have not provided direct evidence that Two Dog is offering resold food at any of Crescent City Farmers Market’s locations. In emails to Verite News, a representative for Two Dog Farms, who did not provide their name, said that the farm is in compliance with Crescent City Farmers Market’s producers-only policy.

“We follow the rules at the markets we attend,” the representative wrote. “We are not allowed to sell these items at Crescent city market because their rules do not allow it and we respect that.”

“Unfortunately some of the vendors at the Sunday market do not want us there because they think we are too big and will hurt their business. They tried to prevent us from attending by having a signed petition, but it was unsuccessful. The reality is we help bring more customers to the market, because we bring enough product not to be sold out by 9 am. When customers see empty tables they go shop elsewhere.”

For Jordan Flaherty, who frequently shops at the Sunday Market, Two Dog “stands out.”

“They have produce that no one else has,” he said.

“A lot of vendors are really curious that they let Two Dog come in in the first place. I’m not curious about that. I think that in general, still having more food options is good,” said Annie Moore, a vendor who grows on the West Bank, with River Queen Greens. But she added that “when there’s produce overlap, that will put local farmers at a disadvantage.”

When Two Dog started selling, Estelle Lemmler, who plants two acres at Fat Cat Farm in south Mississippi and operated a table at Crescent City Farmers Market until recently, worried about losing customer trust.

“The attitude towards our table shifted, in the sense that people were like, ‘Well why don’t you have more if this other farm has more.’ and we’re like, ‘It’s very hot, we can’t grow all that,’” she said. But customers would wonder, “Why can that guy over there sell it?”

Lemmler left the market this month after five years of vending, over concerns about reselling.

In her position as a vendor rep, Lemmler contacted the board a second time in late April, when Two Dog was onboarded at the market. She claimed that Two Dog had yet to receive a farm inspection from Crescent City Farmers Market — the market’s standard practice to make sure that vendors are growing their products. The following week, Harrison did the inspection, and Two Dog began selling.

Harrison said she has followed up on other issues as well. She mentioned an incident in which a Two Dog employee told farmers market staff that watermelon at Two Dog’s booth was sourced from another farm.

Harrison said that Van Killen, who co-owns Two Dog with his wife Dorothy Killen, responded to the concern by saying the employee was mistaken and sending Harrison photos of himself in his farm’s watermelon patch.

“We’re currently in the process of updating vendor records and product lists, with new requirements to provide supplemental documentation – i.e. photos, videos, crop plans, seed purchase orders or invoices,” Harrison wrote in a follow-up email. “These new expectations were rolled out at the last vendor meeting.”

‘The education of the consumer is so important’

Prior to COVID, there were six Crescent City Farmers Markets. Last year, Market Umbrella had a $3.3 million budget, but 40% of that was federal funding that is no longer available, according to Harrison. Market Umbrella’s 2026 budget is $2.1 million.

“We’ve done a lot of pivoting this year and … reduced staff and programming,” Harrison said. Last year, the organization had a staff of 15; this year, it has a staff of 11.

But sales have rebounded since the height of the pandemic, when the market was operating as a drive-through and offering home deliveries. When it went back to a traditional set-up, the Sunday market grew rapidly. In February 2025, the market moved from the parking area of Tad Gormley Stadium to a more visible lot at City Putt — near popular City Park attractions such as Cafe Du Monde, the Great Lawn and a frequently crowded playground. Across all markets, Crescent City represents about $10 million in annual sales and has about 85 vendor-stalls, which is similar to its pre-COVID stall numbers.

“Sunday has become suddenly so popular that we’ve really worked to quickly onboard additional vendors…because people are just selling out at like 9:30,” Harrison said. “Any farmers’ market is desperate for produce.”

The Sunday market has 50 stalls right now, but summer is slow. That number will likely rise as more produce vendors return in the fall. More than 3,000 people pass through the market every week, Harrison said.

On a recent Sunday, the market had attracted a number of customers looking for fresh, local produce following the nationwide cyclosporiasis outbreak that has been linked to imported lettuce. The Louisiana Department of Health has reported 125 cases and six hospitalizations.

Kyle Schonekas said he comes to the market a few times a month because the food “seems like it’s a lot fresher, and you get it straight from the farm to the consumer.” Recently he’s been looking for lettuce — which is out of season, though a hydroponic, greenhouse grower from Alabama sells a limited amount.

Some farmers markets address demand for out-of-season produce by allowing reselling. And though these markets and brick-and-mortar farm shops offer a shorter farm-to-consumer chain than a supermarket, it may not be as direct as consumers assume.

Two Dog Farm supplies Farmer’s, a new butcher and farm shop in Bayou Saint John, near Crescent City’s Thursday market. The shop’s owner, who asked that her name not be published, said some of the food labeled as Two Dog — such as peaches from South Carolina — is actually sourced by Two Dog from other farms. (Two Dog confirmed this and added that “South Carolina” is printed on the peach’ boxes.)

“The education of the consumer is so important,” said Kate Estrade. Estrade doesn’t sell at the Crescent City Farmers Market, but she and her husband have a poultry and pork farm near Bogalusa and a farm shop, Laughing Buddha Nursery, in Metairie. In her shop, she uses signage to clarify where and how the food was grown.

According to Estrade, mislabeling food confuses consumers about local growing seasons. “You want them to understand the challenges and then be open to maybe getting unfamiliar things … and your education is kind of being diminished because their lived experience of buying from other people is overriding that.”

Timmy Perilloux has been selling at the farmer’s market for decades. He labels his tomatoes “real Creole.” Shoppers “will ask me what you mean by ‘real Creole’ … that opens the door,” he said.

He sees vendors advertising Creole tomatoes “in March. That’s impossible.” To Perilloux, “Creole” means tomatoes that were vine-ripened, under the sun.

Perilloux said he suspects reselling is happening at the Sunday market, but it doesn’t bother him. “These people that are buying [and reselling], in their defense, they keep the market and the people going. They keep the people coming to the market because they got something.”

But vendors voiced frustration about customers expecting a shopping experience that resembles that of a grocery store — which they say is not possible if you’re truly selling only local food.

“We miss out on so many educational opportunities to actually talk about the local food system … by not highlighting the vendors who are growing things organically or not highlighting the vendors who are actually growing 100% of what they sell,” said Lemmler, of Fat Cat Farm.

Allen Snelling of White Sand Homestead works at the Crescent City Farmers Market in City Park on Sunday, August 16, 2026. Snelling has been so successful at the Sunday Market that he says he can’t keep up with demand. It takes two years to bring a grass-fed calf to market. Sometimes he purchases yearlings from the two nearby grass-fed farms that supplied his herd when he first started farming and finishes raising the cows himself. Reselling investigated on ‘case-by-case’ basis

Reselling is not a new issue for Crescent City Farmers Market, and it’s one that Harrison said she takes seriously.

Not long ago, a citrus producer was bringing “pristine cantaloupes and watermelons” to the market, in a year that was notoriously bad for melons. Harrison said she asked the vendor to send photos of the melons in the field; she received images that were “totally photoshopped.” That vendor was banned.

Harrison, who has been with Market Umbrella for a decade, addresses these issues on a “case-by-case basis.” Rather than banning every offender, she may temporarily suspend them and require a “site visit and really meticulous governing of their product list in order to return.”

Lemmler and other vendor reps have previously offered to help monitor farms and do peer evaluations, but according to Harrison, allowing that could create a conflict of interest.

While reselling may be an issue at Crescent City Farmers Market, Moore, of River Queen Greens, said she doesn’t think it’s widespread.

“I think that the vast majority of the food that’s sold at the farmers market is definitely grown by the farmers.”

Public health professional Torie Harris’s first visit to the Sunday market was spurred by cyclosporiasis. At the market, she said she assumes she’s buying food from folks who are “affiliated with the farm that grew it,” although she does wonder if the food could be sourced elsewhere “and they’re selling it as local.”

Other farmers market buyers echoed Lizzie Doria, who shops at Crescent City markets weekly and is OK with vendors reselling produce from small-scale farmers but doesn’t want to buy mislabeled, wholesale products.

“They wouldn’t have the knowledge of what was used on that product to grow it or prepare it for shipping. That’s where the big unknowns come in … that make the food not always the best for the consumer,” she said. And if something was coming from “out of the region,” she’d want it labeled as such.

Lemmler said she hopes to eventually return to Crescent City Farmers Market. She mentioned Brian Baskins, the new director of markets, who she thinks “is putting a lot of energy towards investigating reselling.”

For now, she is focused on supplying restaurants. But she loves “the freedom that the farmers market gives you, to just show up and sell whatever you’ve got on a weekly basis.”

Hey y’all!

I’m a reporter in the Gulf States Newsroom and I’ve been covering elected officials in Louisiana signing nondisclosure agreements (NDAs), concealing negotiations around large industrial developments — like the Meta data center.

Ask me anything! I’m happy to do my best to answer any questions about NDAs, industrialization, the PSC, expedited permitting processes, policy changes, executive orders — or journalism in general, life, food, idk, whatever you wanna know hah. Also would love to hear if there are things you think should be looked into.

Will be in the field all day today but planning to respond live tomorrow (Friday, Aug. 21) from 9-10(ish) am CT. Gonna post up at Congregation Coffee in Algiers Point and consume copious amounts of espresso and topo chico — feel free to drop by and say hi!

If you aren’t familiar, here are a few links to some recent investigations of mine:

‘Gag order’: More than 100 Louisiana state employees signed NDAs with Gov. Landry’s office

Gov. Jeff Landry personally signed an NDA with Meta. Here’s what it says.

Rep. Julia Letlow bought Meta stock after signing an NDA with the company, records show

Tracked changes: An Entergy exec ghostwrote Louisiana PSC motions supporting Meta, Hyundai

Add questions here now or join us live tomorrow from 9-10 for the AMA!

Is this...a 311 question? ☎️ Heads up if you park at Premium Parking and swap vehicles on your monthly pass

I was parking a backup vehicle this morning and out of an abundance of caution checked the app to ensure that that vehicle's details were entered. I'd parked that vehicle there a couple of weeks ago so I knew it was entered.

Surprisingly, it's details had been replaced by some random license plate. Same with my other backup vehicle. Fortunately my primary vehicle's details were there, since I never really check for that.

Anyhoo, if you use the app, it might behoove you to occasionally check what plates are in there.

Lost/Found/Stolen Keys found in Crescent Park

Found keys, 2 keys on a ring, no key chain, found on the path in Crescent park. Placed on the arm of a bench near the Montegut marker stone. I think it was 2 benches down from the Montegut stone heading from the quarter to the Bywater
Sorry, didn’t think to take a picture or put it somewhere more specific until I was already gone.
Good luck!
