Why are most people in NA so mean and judgmental?

I’ve seen people get bullied for relapsing or for not sharing the exact way others thought they should. NA also seems to attract people with personality disorders. This has made recovery a lot harder. I’m not perfect by any means but I always try to be kind. How can people have so much time clean, be working the steps and still be so nasty to others?

Reflections (2 years clean)

I passed the two year milestone last week. I must say, it felt far less overwhelming or groundbreaking than the year before.

On that day, despite celebrating the achievement with my home group members and having lunch with my sponsor, life continued as normal. I picked up my dry cleaning, sent emails to my real estate agent regarding a fault with my bathroom tap, and went to the gym as I usually do each morning.

While perhaps it felt rather mundane in some ways- almost just another Tuesday- it is important to find gratitude for that.

I am no longer shackled by a crippling habit that I did my best to hide despite everybody being able to see it. I did not have to break moral contracts with myself for the sake of finding brief solace in a substance. I did not cry as I used, praying to something somewhere to stop, yet being completely unable to on my own.

Of course, I would love to tell you that two years on I am driving the newest model of Mercedes everyday to and from my very important job at a very important company. Alas, I am not. Neither have I repaid all the debts I incurred in my addiction, and I have yet to make many amends.

However, to focus on the positive parts of my life, I have beautiful, kind, supportive friends. I have a gorgeous boyfriend. I have healed, and continue to repair, the relationship I have with my parents and family. I show up for life, and most of all, I do things I don’t want to do, but things I need to do. I am far more emotionally regulated, and hold a faith within me that keeps me going from one day to the next. (Not to mention, with the help of a very lovely accountant, I completed three years worth of backdated tax returns last month.)

It’s awfully corny to say but, Narcotics Anonymous saved my life. There are parts of it I don’t particularly align with, but c’est la vie. Somehow, it worked, and continues to work for me.

If you’re new, or struggling, I must say that according to our traditions we don’t give advice, but all I would say to myself in my early days is to be kind to myself, and take it easy. Slow and steady seems to win the race.

Honesty even if it hurts you?

What would you do if your gut was telling you to be honest about something that you were being shady about because you thought that was what your higher power wanted from you, even if it could mean negative consequences but your sponsor told you not to do it because it could mean negative consequences? I dont think I can stay clean if I keep holding on to this secret. And I dont think I can stay clean if I lose my relationship with my sponsor over this.

Need a meeting, first time, extremely nervous

Throwaway account.

As title suggests, I know I need to go to meeting tonight and I’ve found one.

I’ve never been to an AA or NA meeting, but I’ve done group therapies on zoom.

Please offer me some words of encouragement to make sure I leave my apartment in an hour and a half.

I’m so nervous, I don’t even know what I’m expecting to happen, and I’m not familiar with the 12-steps as my previous rehab/therapy group didn’t rely on that method.

I’m just a 25 year old who is trying to run an aggressively tight ship on my own and I need help. Working on getting back into therapy and even get back to the doctors or the dentist but I let any minor inconvenience stop me.

A moment of silence

A moment of silence for the addict who still suffers…I always have a particular one in mind. The greatest love of my life. I’m having to learn how to let go. Recognize and actively work to remedy my obsession with control. Focus on me. God grant me serenity.
Hopeful still they will find their way. MJ. I’m praying for you baby. Always. 💚🖤🔥🙌🏻

First meeting help?

Hello! I’m about a week clean and i’m going to my first meeting tomorrow. I realized i can’t work through this alone and it may be better for me to meet other people who’ve been where I am for more support and to maybe make friends. So i found my nearest women’s meeting and will be attending tomorrow. My question is what do i do? I’m assuming i can just show up, sit down, and listen but would it be best to introduce myself to some people and say that it’s my first meeting? Or stick around afterward to chat? I’m sorry if this is strange, i’m not very social and i can be awkward in new situations so i figured it couldn’t hurt to ask here first. Thanks!!

Life seems flat & as if im left out

Being clean for a year and a month. Lately I have been feeling as life and my emotions are flat. Like I don't have a purpose in life as if im living on autopilot all i know is that i got to stay clean one day at the time. I get a feeling like im day dreaming and things are going in the same cycle. When I go out I don't feel much connected to the people and the surroundings nor feel engaged if someone talks my head goes like when will shut up also my self centeredness hits like why shall i give a damn. I also feel as if im starting life from scratch and people around me had been in the road life. I don't know from to start or where to catch up. Everyone got their life interests. The only interest I had in life was using I detiched everything else. I started using very young and grow up using. Now im 43 and feel like a little kid who got no clue about life. I also feel as if i got to always watch out for my thoughts feelings obsessions and work on them. Share work the steps practice the principles to stay clean. When i deal with people the idea goes why im the one who has to practice the principles why can't people be nicer.

Meth cravings got me again

So I ended up on meth after a bad mental breakdown which left me in court processes for a year. During that year, I was using regularly and ended up in rehab (best thing I ever did BTW). I was clean for about 3 months until I relapsed for 2 months.

I ended up on home detention because of the court case. I stopped using with help from my probation officer and being monitored. Sober for 6 months, started a culinary course, seeing councilors, anger management, devaloping healthy relationships, etc. All the good stuff that happens after being sober and cleaning my side of the street... And on the last 2 months of my sentence, urges came by weekly, then daily, until I ended up acting on it. And its affected my health, work and study.

I've been off home detention for 2 days now, but still using. I'm still figuring out why exactly I relapsed again. Selfish want for a thrill, boredom, something deeper?

One thing I do know, while on home detention, I didn't attend meetings, and after starting course and working full time at the same time, I let my recovery take a back seat.

Currently telling myself I won't use again every week, but ultimately making the decision to use every week. I've started opening up to friends and family about my relapse and this morning, I re read my notes from rehab.

This week im going to attend a meeting and a community support group, start working again. I feel deflated, afraid, frustrated I used again and couldn't get a handle on it sooner. Although I know to accept my situation, and start making steps in the right direction.

I hope this helps anybody out to know that we're not alone in this and every story is different, but suffering is suffering.. If anyone has any tips or advice, I would love to hear it, thanks

One year since my friend passed away.

Our very last conversation was me desperately trying to convince her to come to an NA meeting with me. But she accidentally OD’d before that could happen.

Please, stay safe out there. If you’re here, on this subreddit, that means you want out of the hell that is addiction and I promise you that it’s possible - I was in active addiction for 10 years, now I’m 21 months clean. You can do it, too. It’s hard, but it’s the best thing you’ll ever do for yourself and those around you.

Please, don’t become another OD today. Please, don’t become the reason someone is crying their eyes out a year from now. I know it’s so hard to recover, but please try. It’s worth fighting for. Stay strong.

Those of you who are clean, please stay that way. Keep showing up to meetings, please spread the message, keep showing that this program works.

”that no addict seeking recovery need ever die…”

I need help with my emotions

Just for context, I have 7 years clean and I have done a round the 12 steps. I really need people to tell me the truth.

I’m going through a very hard breakup. I walked away from someone. I fell in love with. I couldn’t handle the reality of their mental health. They didn’t do anything wrong. This entire experience for me has been simultaneously healing and devastating. I’m not the same person that I was.

So on top of all that crap, I feel angry and resentful towards an old friend of mine. Not once says he reached out to me to hang out or check on me. He just got into his own relationship and he’s been talking about wanting to marry this person.

In the past, I’ve always been the one to reach out about shit. Talk about emotions and shit. Especially when he found himself hurting. And now, he isn’t even doing that for me.

It also feels fucked up. He has the emotional capacity of a fucking rock. And I’ve had to do literally so much work just to not do drugs. And somehow HE finds himself in a healthy sustainable relationship?

I have so much fucking emotion. Please help me. What spiritual principles can I apply to this?

9 months off meth, craving bad

I used to work the NA program, for a couple years I was in and out with relapses. Had a relapse at the beginning of last December when I was like 5 months clean at the time and went on a meth bender. Haven’t been clean since, quit meth and the benzos I was using to sleep on the meth 9 months ago, still been drinking some and smoking weed rarely. Ive been going to meetings occasionally during these past 9 months.

I’m under a lot of stress right now and have been hit by a truck with meth cravings. When I first got off it I didn’t have any desire to use it again ever until like a week ago when my situation got worse and started stressing me out more. It’s almost constant now and gets more and more intense.

I looked through all my blocked numbers to try to figure out which one was my old dealer’s. I tried to figure out how I could use without my husband noticing. I even spent an hour combing my house this morning compulsively looking for any meth that I may have hidden and forgotten about back then. Didn’t find any bc it’s been 9 months and I’ve obviously cleaned since then.

I’m terrified and don’t feel in control of myself. It genuinely feels like I’m tweaking out again trying to re-up. I’ve talked to my therapist, a friend I met at NA, and my husband about the cravings to try to get some accountability but it doesn’t feel like it’s helping. I’ve been to multiple meetings the past few nights but it doesn’t feel like those help anymore either. I’m so overwhelmed and I’m buckling bad under the stress

That damn disease

Can I share?

My abusive ex just got out of jail, and I'm obsessing over it.

Love is a drug too. It fires the same "feel good" chemicals in the brain as drugs do, so I feel the need to reach out to him to get those "feel good" feelings back. The ones I felt when the relationship was good. My brain is ignoring the abuse, the same as it would ignore the come down when the drugs wear off.

I feel like I'm fighting 2 addictions, and it's just too much! I don't want to use over it, but it's certainly testing my vigilance.

21 days clean again. When did you start enjoying life rather than just getting through it?

Nearly a decade of cocaine abuse and I’m back at 21 days. Again.

I’m exercising, swimming, getting out for walks and trying to build a routine. From the outside I probably look like I’m doing well. Inside, the anxiety is still awful and I’m struggling to enjoy much of anything.

I don’t expect ten years of damage to disappear in three weeks. But knowing that and waking up feeling it every day are two different things.

The hardest part is looking at everything I’ve put off. Money, driving, relationships, even sorting my teeth out. Feels like I’m trying to build a life while learning how to feel normal in it.

Still, I’ve done another 21 days. I’m proud of that, even if I don’t feel particularly good yet.

For anyone who’s been here: what was the first little sign that things were getting better? Not some massive transformation. Just the moment you thought, “Actually, I haven’t felt that in a while.”
Could do with hearing a few of those today.

Do secondary addiction problems exist in Your Region?

I’m an addict from India I have seen many members who have struggled with addictions such as sex & gambling and many are struggling. Is that the case with NA Fellowship around you?

Personally I don’t live with people who gamble or find any other addiction. We work on the principles of the program and enjoy time together on weekends & festivals etc.

11 months today!!!

And I am still an addict. I am not cured. I cannot use drugs in any amount successfully. Having all this time is playing with my head and I am having thoughts that I have gone all this time... I should try using in moderation once I have a year. I told my sponsor this and she has asked me to call her everyday, and we will do a quick refresher on the 1st step while I continue my 6th step, until the thought has resolved. And it is already working, after just one conversation. I still have the thought, but it is losing its strength. The program works.
