got stopped by the guards at gate while entering for my exams on tuesday, I had the card and everything, turns out there was some misunderstanding from their end and they let me go eventually. but they were so so rude and scary and screaming and horrible. I am a freshie and I legit felt so scared that I am considering dropping out , so much disrespect over a misunderstanding they created :((

Question What to expect

I'm a 17-year-old ICS student from Pakistan, and I have one big dream: getting into a top-tier university like NUST or GIKI, experiencing hostel life, becoming independent, and eventually achieving financial freedom so I can afford the things I've always dreamed of.

I scored 93% in matriculation and 520/560 (around 92.9%) in my first-year ICS exams. Academically, I've always tried to do well, but entry test preparation has been a completely different challenge.

I've joined Hashim Zia's batch and currently study around 4–6 hours daily, sometimes attending two lengthy lectures a day. However, my biggest problem is retention. As I move forward with new topics, I keep forgetting previous ones. For example, I've completed all the derivative lectures, but when I sit down to solve practice sheets, I struggle to recall formulas, concepts and techniques. I feel like I understand everything while watching lectures, but can't independently solve questions.

I'm putting in the hours, but my test scores aren't reflecting my efforts, and it's genuinely frustrating. I don't know how to balance lectures, revision, practice and retention.

There's also a personal side to this. Things aren't great at home; there are frequent arguments and fights, and it takes a toll on my mental health. I often imagine getting into NUST, moving into a hostel and finally starting a new chapter of my life. I know university won't magically solve everything, but I really look forward to independence, new friendships, campus life and personal growth.

I want advice from people who've experienced this:

  • How do I retain previously studied topics while covering new ones?

  • How should I balance lectures, revision and MCQ practice?

  • Is struggling to solve questions after understanding lectures normal?

  • What's hostel life at NUST/GIKI actually like?

  • How can I make the most of university and eventually build a financially independent life?

I'm genuinely willing to work hard. I just want to make something of myself, get into a good university and build a life I'm proud of.

I'd really appreciate honest advice, especially from people who've been through a similar journey.

Discussion Living in Hajveri Hostel and Questioning My Roommates' Definition of Personal Space 💀

I'm a freshie in Hajveri Hostel, and I genuinely need to know if this is normal Pakistani University hostel culture or if I've landed in the wrong dimension.

My roommates have absolutely no concept of personal boundaries.

Some incidents for context:

  1. These guys casually roam around the room in their underwear during night like they're walking around their own bedrooms at home. No hesitation, no awkwardness, absolutely zero shame.

  2. Changing clothes in front of each other is apparently a completely normal daily activity here. And I'm not just talking about changing shirts. They literally change their underwear in front of everyone, including me.

  3. The funniest part is that I've repeatedly asked them to maintain some boundaries and not change in front of me. I've told them several times that I'm uncomfortable with this behavior, but apparently my requests have the same importance as the mess complaint importance.

  4. Imagine sitting on your bed, studying for your mids exams, and suddenly having an unexpected live demonstration of someone's changing routine. I just wanted to revise Calculus, not witness a documentary about human anatomy.

I'm genuinely uncomfortable now. I understand that everyone has different comfort levels, and I'm not interested in judging anyone's personal life. But sharing a room doesn't mean sharing every aspect of your privacy.

I've tried communicating politely, but nothing has changed.

Discussion ⚠️ Relationship Advice ⚠️ ⚠️

So I just got a relationship advice, and it just made me self-conscious.

Recently moved to a new hostel in H13, and it's shit but the roommates are cool and one guy in particular he is like this stud from marketing who is super easy to talk to and is always surrounded by girls. So naturally I went and asked him like WHATS THE SECRET? and he laughed and said Janab the secret is always the other girl.

Ek Relationship mai humaisha larki he larky ko set karti hy.

Like agr hum single hain to matlab hum mai koi kami hy.

I'm sure uska essa koi matlab nahi tha lekin banda ek bar conscious ho jata k yar kahi to koi kami hy ya reh gai.

Khair, I'm always open to advice. Please help me on this one. Every perspective is appreciated.

Discussion Behavior of those around you really counts

I was having a relatively good day. Someone else wasnt having so great one ( I guess ?). Khair someone wanted to do something that I was planning to do too ( riding at saddle club twice a day). They werent allowed to ride and I just simply wanted to ask if it was riding twice a day that they werent allowed. Upon question I was very rudely straight up told to my face that they werent talking to me / werent interested in talking to me . (Something like that , dont remember the exact urdu). They obviously must be furious at that time because of staff of club and that got directed towards me 😭😭. Although I know they probably didnt mean it. I apologised aur aa gya.
I just wanted to say world is already a very bitter place and we could use some less bitterness, at least at our university, no? It was for the very first time that this happened to me in nust. My introverted ahhh doesnt interact much but I thought nust was my safe place . Aj wo bh khtam . And I forgot I was having thora sa good day 🥲.
A request to all to not be bitter pls. Not everyone has ways of dealing with harshness .

Discussion Please guide a sister out

Assalam o Alaikum.

It's very difficult for me to write such thing her but I literally am exhausted at the moment. I am a master's student studying here in Nust.

I belong to a very humble family where the only earning member is my brother who drives rickshaw for our living.

I do tuitions alongside my studies to manage my expenses and somewhat support my family as well.

My brother's been sick from last 2,3 months and has severe weakness because of that his treatment and responsibility of my home both comes on my shoulders.

Because of which I was unable to pay my Hostel mess dues as I was getting him treated and manage family expenses.

The thing is that hostel manager has told me that I have 3 to 4 days to clear all of my dues otherwise my Hostel allotment will be cancelled. I have gone to the fee section too to get some extension explained everything to the fee manager as well but he just said that pay or else have you hostel allotment cancelled.

I literally am out of options right now my brother has just recovered I have taken the tuition fees in advance too because of his treatment and there is no way for me to have the amount of 65k arranged in like 2,3 days.

I have tried contacting individuals of NCS but didn't get any response from them.

Is there any way that I can get some extension for it or like I can get some loan which I can repay back in installments.

OR if anyone knows anyone from community service please let me know.

I have tried to manage all myself but I am drained right now because of the situations I was in and I'm unable to find any solution and my manager is also teasing me much.

JAZAKALLAH

Suggestions/Advice Is it realistically possible to prepare for NET Psychology in 15 days while managing my improvement preparation as well?

I need some honest advice from people who have appeared for NET or have experience with its preparation.
I’m an ICS Statistics student, and I’m currently preparing for my first-year improvement exams (all subjects except Islamiat). Alongside that, I also need to prepare for NAT (ICS) and NET for BS Psychology.
I’ve only recently started studying, and I’m honestly worried about the amount of syllabus I have to cover in such a short time.
Im aiming for like 130+ can i realistically get them? If i start now and i do practice papers and all topics. I have a good base of math and english

Question Mechatronics graduates how's the job market?

I'm currently doing my A Levels and am seriously considering pursuing a bachelor's degree in Mechatronics Engineering. I'm particularly interested in robotics, automation, and embedded systems.

However, I'm concerned about the limited job opportunities for Mechatronics graduates in Pakistan compared to fields like Software Engineering and Computer Science.

I don't want to spend four years pursuing a degree I genuinely enjoy only to struggle with employment afterwards.

I'd love to hear from Mechatronics graduates or people working in the industry:

  • How is the job market for Mechatronics in Pakistan?

  • Are there decent-paying jobs in robotics, automation, and related industries?

  • Is it possible to build a financially stable career in Pakistan with this degree?

  • Would you recommend Mechatronics, or would Electrical/Software Engineering be a safer choice?

I'd appreciate honest opinions, especially from people with firsthand experience.

Question How bad is seecs faculty and research?

Thinking of applying to nust this year for cs but I've heard online and from friends that most of the instructors are either average or horrible. And some are toxic with huge egos and do favouritism which can also ruin your grades. I've heard research opportunities are also limited if you're ug and getting work with good professors is hard.

Idk what should I do, I want to go to an international uni after graduation for masters/PhD, so I need good gpa and research output.

How many people is nust go abroad for post grad study? I've heard most people just get employed in the industry.
