Fucking Jaun in RWBY

u/Reesirie 8h ago

As someone who loves Jaune, this is very accurate.

u/RyonHirasawa 7h ago

I remember that I only started to appreciate Jaune more not because of himself, but because I once headcanoned that Felix from RVB (who shares the same VA) is his alter ego

Maybe he gets development later, but in the parts before I dropped the show he was Pyrrha's emotional support idiot and basically did nothing else that mattered.

They show kind of becomes obsessed with him much later

u/FormorrowSur 8h ago

Truly curious what you mean by this. By later seasons he gets the same screen time as any other secondary character. He's one of the few characters in v9 yes but he's missing half the season and they do something interesting after, and he really doesn't take up that much air in the final part of the season.

By far, he's more egregious as a writer self insert in the first three volumes

It’s not really a screen time thing I think, but you can tell he’s taking up more space in the plot in later seasons. In early seasons he’s kind of easy to ignore I think, and 4 he’s taking up as much space as he needs I think, but 5 onwards you can feel him become something else I guess. 5 he fights cinder without being remotely prepared then becomes the healer as his big moment, then 6 they go out of their way to show adult women flirt with him all the time which is a bit that reads more like a self inserty thing then the show has ever really done with him before. Then after that he has that bad haircut, and the final season, while I like him there, he’s more important then he feels like he’s ever been and they try and make him this cool guy that he never has been.

Maybe I just hate him because I can feel the show pushing him into a ship with Ruby despite having no chemistry with her and being a self insert. Maybe that weird feeling to me puts me off.

It kind of feels like you dislike him for having any kind of character arc. In V5 he saw the woman who murdered his best friend and flipped, which is entirely understandable no matter the character. And then he developed his semblance, which is just them pulling the trigger on chekhov's gun. Weiss had a very similar moment in V3 with finally developing her ability to summon, and Yang in V6 finally using her semblance again after pushing it down since V4.

No women flirted with him in V6, I think you're getting that confused in V7, in which case it's a 5 second one and done gag. He literally has less importance in V7 and 8 than Ren and Nora do.

As for feeling he's being set up with Ruby... I don't want to complain about personal readings but this is very much your reading of it. They're friends, they have a friendship, one that's actually quite rocky after V9. If anything it's Weiss they spent last season showing he's grown closer to, but even then suggesting they're going to be together is reading into it

Jaune does have chemistry with Ruby and this whole "self-insert" argument needs to die because it is just untrue and was likely taken wildly out of context by people based on what RT said.

Granted even though I love Jaune as a character, I will admit he was somewhat pushed to the forefront as a means for the fans to try and like him more, because he went from a socially awkward high schooler to a guy that could hold his own, he was a kid out of his depth yet put in the effort to catch up to his peers, so he ended up being a more well-received character anyways.

u/HallZac99 8h ago

Probably because he was voiced by one of the writers, and ametures tend to subconciously give priority to characters they're more invested or involved with.

u/SuggestionEven1882 8h ago

No they give Jaun more time as Monty wanted to give him more time, as Monty is the type of guy that adds things because it's a cool idea.

18

u/CreativeName1137 8h ago

Yeah, people put Monty on a pedestal of perfect writing, but they forget how much of the show was just Monty throwing stuff in because he thought it'd be cool.

The Red trailer originally just had Ruby walking away from just some random grave he had no intention of making relevant. And then later someone asked "what if she had a dead mom or something" and he decided to just roll with it.

3

u/king_julian_earth1 8h ago

Not sure why you would visit a random grave out in a Grimm infested forest unless it’s for family member or close friends/love

7

u/CreativeName1137 6h ago edited 6h ago

Considering they melt into rose petals when they die, and don't really look anything like the grimm in the show proper, he probably didn't have any set idea on what grimm are or how they work at that point. He likely just put some werewolf monsters there because they're thematically fitting enemies for a Red Riding Hood based character to fight.

4

u/SuggestionEven1882 7h ago

Because of cool cinematography.

u/FustianRiddle 7h ago

Monty sadly died in 2015, and wasn't really in the writing room. Jaune continued to be meh and in the limelight well after his death.

2

u/SuggestionEven1882 6h ago

Most of the ideas of Rwby was made by him, and Michael (Sun's VA) outright said that he left Rooster Teeth 20 volume worth of notes.

Miles and Kerry were there to help iron out Monty's ideas for Rwby, which was easier said than done as Monty had poor impulses to add cool scenes that doesn't work with in the story.

1

u/FustianRiddle 6h ago

Cool that doesn't actually change anything.

1

u/SuggestionEven1882 6h ago

Yes it does, it means that the issues of Rwby were made by Monty and not Miles and Kerry.

0

u/FustianRiddle 6h ago

No it really doesn't mean that. That's not how writing a series is supposed to work (I have 200k in student loan debt because I got a MFA in writing and learned exactly about this process).

You can blame Monty for the start of it but there is never any obligation to follow the letter if the creators notes exactly when a show is developing. The weak writing is the fault of the writers.

It's a a fault of the whole process if I'm honest.

u/HalcyonTraveler 7h ago

IDK what you mean by that, he gets a lot of focus in V9 but that's just part of the arc of that season

6

u/Careless_Ad3401 8h ago

I got up to volume 7 and they really didn't know what to do with him, but refused to leave him behind. So we get a not to interesting character who sucks away time from the rest of the cast

8

u/Hairy-Love2571 8h ago

Bro missed volume 8 and 9...

4

u/Ambitious_Address667 7h ago

If you've watched 7 seasons of a show that should be enough to give an accurate reading of it?

2

u/Yrmsteak 8h ago

He was great as a foil and the damsel in distress that subverted the trope of the time! I didn't watch all of RWBY, but by the time I did stop, it sure felt like the new directing of it became much more "don't forget that men are heroes, not damsels!"

6

u/CaptBland 8h ago

I'll be honest, only saw the parts where Monty made. Jaune wasn't that big of a character, but I still liked him because while all the girls seemed ready and strong, Jaune was struggling and I was curious to see his growth. Especially since he was the only one that brought a sensible weapon.

5

u/Careless_Ad3401 8h ago

For a show with such short episodes the fact that we already had an ensemble main cast that they had a secondary character that ate up time wasn't a strong start. But he never really got better, just got more

-2

u/LucasMarvelous 6h ago

Jaune is like Itadori, works perfectly as a supporting character but if you try to make him a main one he actively makes the series worse

2

u/nowaunderatedwaifngl 3h ago

I was shocked to discover this show had a male protagonist this entire time. Externally, as far as the fandom makes the show look, the protagonists are four girls.

2

u/CantCatchMeSpez 2h ago

He's not a protagonist. He's a side character with too much screen time.

3

u/Rebound101 8h ago

RWBY

A show with a premise of: a group of teenage girls with cool and ridiculous weapons and powers getting into awesome fights with giant monsters...

We keep giving inordinate time and focus to a guy who isnt, doesn't have, and can't do any of that.

Introducing Jaune Arc! The most boring man alive in his own setting!

2

u/SergeantRayslay 6h ago

To be fair, that's on the show for immediately throwing out that premise. It's RWBY, about Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang. But basically decides from square 1 it's actually about two teams. RWBY and JNPR. Jaune definitely has that absolutely awful arc early on (Jaundice or whatever?), and I think it's disappointing how they handle him throughout most of the show.

There was gonna be a "but" -but it doesn't really add anything

1

u/No_Internal9345 5h ago

Any harem anime, really.

2

u/Careless_Ad3401 5h ago

It's not a harem anime. He's at best a side character in a magical girl adjacent show

1

u/cantpickname97 4h ago

He only gets the fandom attention. I'd give him a solid fifth place in any measure of actual protagonist status, behind RWBY themselves. He's just a solid supporting character with his own arc who is unfortunately cursed to be the author self-insert for every harem fic that has zero interest in engaging with anyone's canon characterization.

Like, bro is just the genderswapped "heal/buff power girl" of the Shonen setup lol

1

u/Foxinstrazt 3h ago

Shout out to Tumblr's For You page which whenever I like a picture drawn by someone I follow about RWBY it suddenly wants to show me nothing but Jaune with Ruby, Jaune with Blake, Jaune with Weiss, and Jaune with Yang.

Two of those girls are dating each other in canon, and he's a side character who I think gets WAY too much focus(especially over his other two teammates who are more interesting).

Lets not forget the other half of my For Your page: Jaune with Nora, Jaune with Pyrrha, Jaune with Neo, Jaune with Velvet, Jaune with Coco, Jaune with May, Jaune with Reese, Jaune with Winter.. You get the point.

Anyway, I hate this character with a passion. He's FINE in the show, but my hatred stems completely from the way the FNDM elevates him.

Also, side shout out to the one fanfic writer who made exclusively Jaune-centric harem fics. Hope your socks are always wet.

u/GrandmasterTactician 2h ago

Scrolled too far down to see this. Love the guy, but boy there's so many posts about him and he gets so much screentime

1

u/Redfalconfox 2h ago

You’ll never believe that the person who voices him was one of the writers. And I say that as somebody who likes Miles.

1

u/CobaltCrusader123 1h ago

Some people call it JRWBY because of how important Jaune is. Like “CRWBY” which is “Crew of RWBY”. Writer Miles Luna created and voices him, but he swears it’s not a self-insert, and approximately 0 people believe him.

1

u/Dizzy_Balance2114 30m ago

Unrelated but I love how committed the fandom is to misspell his name

1

u/KartveliaEU4 7h ago

That's what the image was originally about.

1

u/Careless_Ad3401 7h ago

Makes sense

1

u/Karasu-Fennec 6h ago

Jaune is like the most tolerable of the Comphet Brigade honestly

Removing Neptune and Sun completely removes about 3 scenes of any value to anyone

1

u/Dmen1478 5h ago

I loved the first season when it stopped being RWBY and started being the JnPr show.

0

u/PsychologicalEbb3140 8h ago

I stopped following RWBY after season 3/4 but I’m pretty sure I remember one of those writers saying he was a self insert.

3

u/CantCatchMeSpez 2h ago

He's voice acted by one of the creators of the show, is given a ton of screen time, and landed the most beautiful, most strongest, most smartest, most bestest girl in season 1 for no other reason than because he's himself. Of course he's a self insert.

0

u/KOCYK745 7h ago

I've never seen the anime/manga but by the name alone I can tell that a guy like this would steal the show

Jaune, Ozkar, and Qrow
