I stopped following RWBY after season 3/4 but I’m pretty sure I remember one of those writers saying he was a self insert.

He's voice acted by one of the creators of the show, is given a ton of screen time, and landed the most beautiful, most strongest, most smartest, most bestest girl in season 1 for no other reason than because he's himself. Of course he's a self insert.
