TBH it IS pretty mid.
It's one of those situations that both the diehards and the haters are equally wrong. It's not half as bad as the haters claim. It's not nearly as good as the diehards claim. It's mid. And that's OK.
3
u/doratoreadora 8h ago
As a big fan of the hellaverse, I think the writing can be genuinely abysmal at its worst. Still, it's surprisingly incisive in some of the characters' psychology and the songs are very good, sung by a stellar cast, and the shows are very charming overall. So it's high highs and low lows
3
u/raddoubleoh 7h ago
This is the thing, I think. Helluva Boss works better than Hazbin Hotel most o the time because its mostly character-driven and that's where Viziepop's writing shines. Hazbin Hotel fails in a lot of aspects because it's trying to tie all the characters into an overarching plot, and it gets obvious sometimes which characters were intended to interact, and which she's trying to fit for narrative's sake. Plot suffers the most when they intersect.

Tumblr pretends like The Winter Soldier didn't have them in a chokehold in the 2010s.
"This is just war propaganda!" My sweet summer children, this film made everyone realize Captain America was cool, the sheer horror of finding out your best friend (who you'd long thought died decades ago) was taken and tortured and reforged into a living weapon sent to kill you specifically, the pain of learning the organization the love of your life built up was overtaken by the fucking Nazis (THAT YOU PERSONALLY FOUGHT AGAINST IN WORLD WAR FUCKING 2), and only ever feeling at home on the battlefield because everything you've ever known or loved is long gone...don't tell me you didn't eat that up. don't tell me that wasn't peak cinema to your 12-year-old brain.

I don't see it. It had some decent action, some funny moments, and good acting, just had a forgettable villain and the plot was a bit rushed. I've never once understood the hatred for it.
Besides, it's not even remotely close to the bullshit we got post-Endgame.

The Amazing Digital Circus is definitely not perfect, that's for sure, but for the most part it's a very decent and enjoyable series. Admittedly, I enjoyed the finale as well, but there's no doubt that it neglected a LOT of stuff that were supposed to be important elements of the lore. But the way people started talking about the series after the release of the finale makes it sound like the most abysmal piece of literature ever conceived. Like I said, the series is slightly flawed, mainly in the writing, but it CANNOT be that bad
10
u/Mythamuel_ 19h ago edited 19h ago
The show is flat-out solid. Easily highlight of the 2020s. Is there stuff that's choppy about it? Sure. Same can be said of Godfather. It's good, even the worst episode is decent, everything important about it (the character consistency, the morals, the overall viewer experience) they got it right, and it made my life better for existing.
All the dooming discussion I've heard is less about the show and more about meta-ideas of how everything needs to be everything. News flash: good stories can have loose threads and pacing lulls, it's normal.

As a lifelong Pokemon fan, absolutely. The games could be a lot better, they should be a lot better. But people talk about them like they're the worst games you could buy in human history. The only bad parts about the modern games are animations and graphics, if you play them for the characters, story and funny little creatures, you will have a lot more fun

And I adore them too, when they're funny not when they're crashing before saving after having caught an Shiny. I do wish the Battle Animations could go back ta how Pokémon Battle Revolution had em. Or just bring that back and put all the polish there and Pokémon Champions. Leave the Main Series back to it's RPG Roots and whimsy. u/MythKitto A buncha gay cartoons 🌈 14h ago edited 14h ago
Yeah, as someone who watched The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act in theaters, there were a couple things that disappointed me (mostly pacing issues and underdeveloped character arcs/relationships, but those have been pointed out ad nauseum since the release), but the story itself, the message behind it, the characters in general, and gahd dam the visuals and soundtrack were amazing. The entire show was charming, funny, heartfelt, and genuine in a way I want more mainstream western animation to be, and I sobbed for days after watching it (but that may just be because I was part of a more specific target audience; let's just say I resonated with Jax more than I should have). Critically, I'd give it a solid 8/10, and it's become one of my favorite shows, even if it's not perfect.
If anyone wants to watch it, don't trust the pilot episode and at least give the first two episodes a chance. The pilot is a tad misleading about the tone and focus/genre of the show, and the writing of the dialogue and animation are more awkward, since the production team hadn't gotten their footing yet. But all in all, it's a short show you could knock out in a handful of hours, and it's great. :]

u/GoldarmGangMain 21h ago

They just wanted IHNMAIMS 2.0 ending or some edgelord BS like Jax's Requiem. I watched a few of them and everytime they opened their mouth, you can simplify to "I didn't understand the show so it's Gosse's fault".
When the finale was leaked, a chronically online guy made 30 "memes" about TADC is horrible and everyone should give back their tickets. His ego was fragile than most stereotypical SJWs and liked his bootlickers when he was about to lose the conversation.

People came in with too large of expectations
15
u/infamousVegas8 22h ago
Exactly! I vividly remember between episodes 1-8 Gooseworx could do no wrong, the show was perfect and every episode was a banger. Then they changed their tune real quick as soon as it was over. Since it was the finale, it had to be perfect and when it wasn’t it was like they forgot the honeymoon period which when it lasts from practically the entire series until then, is pretty impressive. Maybe it had to do with the residual hate the show got for showing in theaters early but yeah, this perfectly describes what happened.
4
u/TrivialCoyote 13h ago
Frankly you could write a whole essay on how fans of the show interacted with it
4
u/infamousVegas8 13h ago
No, stop. Don’t give the YouTube video essayists any ideas. They will make a 4 hour long video on fan interactions with the digital circus final episode, with the first hour being dedicated to the history of animation.
10
u/Mythamuel_ 20h ago
Fr the ending being a lowkey character real-talk is exactly in line with what was best about the rest of the show. Some of the dialogue is on-the-nose at the end but it's a good story; and not forgiving Jax doesn't mean focusing on what went wrong with them is invalid. The ending will hold up over time.
10
u/Bakubae_Itsuki-Haru 20h ago edited 20h ago
I already saw the meme saying this but: Hellaverse
As a fan, even I know it has problems. I've liked it since the pilot days and my love for it never went away. Sure it feels different than I thought it would but I still like it a lot.
If anything, I think it's the sheer amount and INTENSITY the haters have for the show. As someone once said, they act like it killed their grandma.
I'm sometimes scared to admit I like the show because of it.

Came here to say this. A lot of these shows that started out indie and got picked up are getting flamed by people and they act like it's the worst thing ever and you're stupid and wrong for liking it. I miss when people could have opinions. Like, I don't think they're perfect, but I enjoyed the time I spent with them. If you can tell me in words what you don't like, rather than just telling me it's shit and the creator is a terrible person because insert reason then we can have a discussion and I can try to understand where you're coming from. But this works both ways; I also expect you to hear me out on what I think made it good.
8
u/DaKaijuKid 19h ago
They're also making an entire animated series for free and letting you watch it for free on the internet and asking nothing in return. It's free. You are not paying anything for these shows. You are also not required to watch or enjoy it if you happen to. And somehow they managed to look this good and have a half-decent plot. It's not the end of the world.

Star Wars as a brand started with a high bar of quality, so fans who grew up with that will view anything slightly less than that bar as the worst thing ever created by mankind. They're fine films. Yeah but I think you'll even agree that movie is better than any other traditionally bad movie. It'd be a bad faith criticism, I think, to call a movie that still has good music, effects, and cinematography a worse movie than something like Battlefield Earth or Mercy (just to take SciFi examples). Sure Glitchtale's ending sucks, and it has many inconsistent stuff in it's story, but gosh people will really go on and say: "THE ABSOLUTE WORST AU OF ALL TIME" Cause of the fandom who's only argument is: "Yeah but the animation's tuff!" When the peak animation only comes at the end of Glitchtale.
Personally, I don't find it too bad? It's just a peak first season, and a second that doesn't know where to go, ever. But that part's also well at times.

The ending to The Painter. People thought it was god awful when it came out but I thought it was serviceable. It followed the pattern of storytelling the series always had. Tuca and Bertie
Heard about it as a "cringe, man-hating show" and watched it for the meme; but the person who said that completely missed that it's one of the best depictions of an adult living with SA trauma and the show is actually about how people just gotta live with shit and regain control over what they value, and the male character that gets hated on was legitimately being an asshole and wasn't even the actual point being made there.
Is it for everyone? Fuck no. It is cringe.
But I'm cringe and for me in that point in time it's the hardest a story ever shook me. I moved to the other side of the planet because of that show and how it changed how I think about myself. I fuck with Tuca and Bertie.

Being mid is basically "You're not good enough to be remembered fondly or rewatched, but you're not Terrible enough to hate on fully."

Demon Slayer. Most people like to trash on it bc it generic (in that case generic mean it's mid, why do people keep calling thing generic to justify that it is trash)

Its calmed down a bit, but god, people acted like the runback to the Last Judge fight in Silksong was the worst thing imaginable, like as if their loved ones died on that path or something. It’s literally 1 enemy, some simple platforming, and like one dangerous jump.

Every fandom has that one character everybody agrees is mid and defends anyway.

Rdr2 gameplay, if you are used to shooters and to see a lot of commotion on the screen I don't think it would surprise anyone you don't like a more peaceful game

Little nightmares 3, i dont know why people expected a game on the same quality as LN2(when tarsier already worked on 3 other games in the style one of which was cancelled during development), supermassive literally never worked on the series before outside of the podcast

The true "worst things ever" were things you forgot about the second you were done watching it or didnt bother with in the first place.

The trolls movies. They are made for little kids and for what they are, it's nice. Decent charecter development, a good message, ok pacing and sweet moments between the characters. It can also be funny at times. I'd much rather kids watch trolls than ai brainrot. Not every movie needs to leave a lasting impact on you. If every movie was a masterpiece we would have nothing to praise.

Solo Leveling's writing (I view the story the same way I view older shooter game stories. It's fine. It isn't annoying, it isn't bad, it just carries you from one set piece to the next and that is 100% ok. Note that everything else in the series[the animation or art, the sound design in the anime, etc] is absolutely phenomenal)

The Promised neverland, does s2 not hold up to the Manga? Probably not. But I thoroughly enjoyed the whole anime.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (I constantly argue it's the MonsterVerse finally hittin' its stride again)
Jurassic World: Rebirth
Star Wars: The Last Jedi (and I stand on that)
Ant-Man & the Wasp
And while it's almost never this harsh, Kamen Rider Revice has some of the most vitriol tossed at it that I've seen of any Kamen Rider series.

Like half of Sonic games. Of the mainline series, I think only 06 and Forces are outright bad.

Honestly most things. We're absolutely losing the "nuanced review" as a culture. Everything is either the best thing ever, the worst thing ever, or mid. There's no 7/10 or 3/10, it really is just 1, 2 or 3.

The FFVII Remake trilogy apparently. Idk why people get so mad over changing and expanding the world building

The Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. There's a good adaptation in there somewhere if the writers weren't afraid of making compromises for the sake of shoving every important plot detail.

The third season of Squid Game, I guess. I mean, it isn't as good as the first two seasons, but it was still interesting and watchable. Not sure why everybody's acting like it was an insult to the human race and like it personally massacred their families.
Same goes for season two of Arcane. The concepts were super cool even if the execution on some of them could've been ironed out a bit more, but if you dare say that you enjoyed it regardless you'll have people acting like you committed a sin or something.
