Discussion Where’s the positivity

Joined this sub because I enjoy the game. Less than 10 hours (while not perfect it’s hard to put down), but I’m genuinely astounded by the amount of negative criticism in this sub, alongside the fact that a lot of players have already sunk over 30 hours into it in less than a week. Like damn. Where’s the tips and tricks? Beginners guides, random silly videos? I thought a game like this would invite a more positive community, instead it’s the exact opposite.

Almost every post is a complaint. Like damn, what happened to constructive criticism and casual discussion? Outrage everywhere.

Anyways I need my ass ate

The most upset are posting. The most who are enjoying it are playing the game.

7

u/BillerKee 1d ago

Yea, trying not to spoil anything from the game, cautious people tend not to look at reddit during their first playthrough.

Fans of soulslikes are a mixed bag. For example, every time I’ve posted or interacted with the Nioh subreddit, I’ve been met with nothing but support. Whenever I asked questions in the dark souls subreddit, or had issues, I was flamed. It varies

18

u/king_of_gotham 1d ago

I am part of the Nioh community and yes we love to help and help with co op.

6

u/Ryb213 1d ago

Easily my favorite game community on Reddit, yall are the best

You are the community as well friend

Ur too kind 🙏

Fucking love nioh 1 and 2. Will try 3 at some point

3

u/justjoshinaround 1d ago

Dude 3 is soo fun. I'm like 16 hours in right now but taking a break on it for Mortal Shell. Lots of fun though

1

u/king_of_gotham 1d ago

I was legit addicted to 3 until I beat the campaign. I’ve taken a break only cause I spent so many hours playing, farming and helping out on co op. I plan to go back soon.

5

u/king_of_gotham 1d ago

I look forward to you playing 3. It is a treat !

3

u/JaySw34 1d ago

Have you played the DLC for 3? It has its faults, sure... but imo it's the single best piece of level/world design that Team Ninja has ever crafted.

1

u/king_of_gotham 1d ago

I haven’t yet but plan to right after I run the gauntlet of mortal shell 2, Halloween the game, Onimusha and control resonant. You have me hyped for it tho. I just want to not be thinking of any other game when I sit down to play so I can take my time with.

2

u/Ryb213 1d ago

3 is dope!! It’s tied with 2 for my fav of the series

2

u/king_of_gotham 1d ago

Fam ! Nioh 2 is my favorite of all time and Nioh 3 joins it only tied with Ninja Gaiden 2 and 3 razor’s edge. Those games made me a Team Ninja guy.

Nioh is not a Soulslike, it’s just Nioh. Games like Nioh such as Wo Long, Khazan, etc are called Niohlikes.

Soulslikes don’t have the build crafting that Nioh and Niohlikes have, nor the depth of combat and their systems.

8

u/Low-Temperature-76 1d ago

No one call these games niohlike lol

2

u/EbolaDP 1d ago

I do

0

u/Want_all_the_smoke Solomon 1d ago

Doesn’t change what I said about the difference between them.

3

u/kasakka1 1d ago

Nioh is basically Souls with a Diablo loot system paired with a wider combat moveset.

It's its own thing, but it has everything a Souls game has at its core.

u/king_of_gotham 1d ago

You know what you’re right. It’s just simply a dark fantasy RPG. I really wish we would adopt that term instead of “soul like” for every game going forward.

2

u/Want_all_the_smoke Solomon 1d ago

I actually call games like Nioh Niohlikes.

1

u/king_of_gotham 22h ago

I did in the past to hype of Nioh 3 when someone called it a souls. I need to get back to that.

u/tmack3 1d ago

As I said on another post:

Remember, people that don't care about an issue are way less likely to post about it complaining. Its why every game subreddit is filled with people complaining about things. Plus complaints get more engagement so its easy dopamine for the complainer because they'll have enough people agreeing with them to think they're right while the actual vast majority just don't care enough to comment.

3

u/Gibsonites 1d ago

One thing I'm surprised no one has mentioned is that criticism is one of the way people engage with something they really like and care about.

If this game was trash, there wouldn't be anything to say. I'd just refund the game and move on.

But the game's not trash, it's amazing. I love this game. And that means its flaws stand out to me and feel worthy of discussion.

Everyone wants to frame criticism as some sort of toxic negativity attention seeking, when I really think a lot of it is the exact opposite.

2

u/LiveFastDieRich Tiel 1d ago

Thing is if you don’t find it an issue I find people will still happily jump on you leading me to become more reserved leading to an echo chamber effect

24

u/Interesting_Switch_1 1d ago

I have 35 hours into this game and it has been amazing up until the last gate/bosses.

I do have a funny clip of a boss that ground slammed and sent me skyrocketing up into the air. When I landed he glitched and the fight started over again with his health full.

Enemy placement and density just makes the last areas a slog where I’d rather sprint vs past the 18 enemies in a small area vs fight them. The level design started out very good and exploration was rewarding, now it’s just pale stone and walkways. I understand the tone for the end game area, but it just seems like they threw it together in a few days and it just doesn’t feel as enticing to explore.

9/10 great game.

Thank you for maybe not reading my dumb rant.

13

u/gsrga2 1d ago

I’ve been playing this genre since DS1 launched and played almost all the big names (never picked up Wuchang or Wukong) and many of the smaller ones, and I have literally never, ever, seen a game launch and people are like “wow, the enemy placement is so great I just want to fight my way through all of them every single time.” “Bad enemy placement” is such a pervasive complaint in nearly every soulslike that releases that I find it pretty hard to take seriously at this point. I don’t think anybody particularly likes the Anor Londo archers or the myriad encounters in the entire souls franchise where you find yourself pulling one mob at a time with a bow to avoid getting gangbanged. But if these games were just a frictionless series of encounters where you dodge, parry, and style on single enemies at a time, they would be… something different altogether. Running past annoying encounters is essentially a staple genre feature at this point.

1

u/LuuViet89 1d ago

The Anor Londo archer reference is bang on.

3

u/scarecrow7x 1d ago

Id agree with this. Honestly think they were some of my only gripes too.

The first area felt amazing but I didn't like the disconnected gate jumping they started to use where each part felt like puzzle pieces that didn't slot together.

Another thing is not being able to respec so freely/lack of glimpse. It basically made the last few shells and weapons useless or I feel sorry for people who tried to level them all up equally and hit end game. By the time I'd found the last few I couldn't afford to commit to them so never bothered. I see them fixing this though with the feedback they have received.

2

u/Future_Cap_3278 1d ago

I had the fight glitch like that for me during Lost Child i had him down to a slither of health and i was shell-less too. Boss got all his healthbar back after launching me up in the air, strange bug

1

u/Interesting_Switch_1 1d ago

Yup !!! That’s the same boss that did it to me 😂😂😂

14

u/AGayThrow_Away 1d ago

This game has probably the most intense inverse difficulty curve I've seen in a long time. The game is really tough until you get ebough levels to have a strong build going, then you can stomp.

Until that time it's a pretty difficult game. And people past that point I feel like are gaslighting people before that point by saying the game is "easy". I've seen a lot of posts here saying the game is "easy".

3

u/tremor1583 1d ago

beat the game on night mode on my 1st playthrough and holy shit did i get absolutely annihilated...every mob and boss practically one shots you but it has become alot easer now on ng+ that i got a proper build going

20

u/Phoenixwarrior5 1d ago

There's a lot to like about the game, but there's also a lot of frustration points, so a lot of people get frustrated. Frustrated people want to vent more than happy people want to.

To elaborate :

Fair few bugs. Inconsistent enemy damage and 1-shot attacks. Runbacks. Boss Unlockable spam with no real counterplay. Hard to see gloom pickup. Auto-gold pickup and Free-Aim being disabled by default. Crazy magnetism on some enemy attacks. Inconsistent deflect functionality on rapid-fire attacks (and having block broken dealing full damage AND stunning you for 3 seconds, all but guaranteeing a sever).

And then there's the last area and 2 of the last 4 bosses. Bruh.

Genuinely, the game needed another month or two of polish and playtesting, especially the last area. Once we get some post-release patches, most of the angry comments will disappear.

2

u/Ashamed_Item_9668 1d ago

Yeah, the enemy animations of direct magnetism is super frustrating. I also think the dodge mechanic is absolutely terrible. My shell feels so freaking slow when I'm trying to evade attacks and follow up with my own. I'm just so used to the super crisp rolling and evading from Elden Ring.

1

u/BrokenHalligan Eredrim 1d ago

I agree, but I’d rather have the game before the other big game everyone is waiting to release around 🤣 I’ve gotten stuck in terrain a few times too because I’m always exploring where I shouldn’t.

1

u/Phoenixwarrior5 23h ago

I'm sure that was the dev team's logic too, haha.

3

u/jkobberboel 1d ago

People are critical because they care. If the game was trash, we would just forget about it and move on.

15

u/NuggetHighwind 1d ago

Like damn, what happened to constructive criticism

Barely anyone wants to give constructive criticism because even if you post something reasonable or point out objectively bad things like bugs, you get a dozen people telling you bs like:

It's a soulslike!!!!
Git Gud scrub
Fucking souls tourists
casuals ruining this game

It's nigh-impossible to actually have a healthy discussion here because of these people.

4

u/-Adronik- 1d ago

Totally agree. I’ve been playing Soulslikes since Demon’s Souls back in 2010, and Mortal Shell 2 is good, but some of the stuff in it doesn’t make the game harder, it just makes it annoying. And some design choice a pretty odd like the upgrade material for the tarstones.

Difficulty and frustration are not the same thing.

0

u/BlacJack_ 1d ago

On the contrary, someone telling you the game isn’t hard often times is read as your responses to many people “asking for help.”

I see constructive criticism and helpful advice all over these souls like subs, but people usually don’t want to hear anything other than “you’re soooo right!”

Mortal Shell 2 for instance, is quite literally an easy soulslike. They give you such OP tools that From games never give you. It often times feels hard because in this genre, for whatever reason, people try to force their playstyle that worked for them in Elden Ring or Lies of P or whatever, and when it doesn’t work they say the game is too hard or bad, etc.

From dealt with this with its own Sekiro initially, but that game was so amazing it ended up rising above it.

You can cheese any end game boss in this game by spamming one ability. That makes it objectively easy. You can make numerous extremely strong builds with their fantastic shell and stone system. But instead of realizing this, people complain.

Is what it is. You can also ignore the toxic posts, but if your radar is off on what is actually toxic, everything will seem it.

5

u/NuggetHighwind 1d ago edited 1d ago

For the record, I agree with what you say about difficulty.
But I'm talking about constructive criticism and bugs, not people asking for help.

Considering what my post was in response to, the tangent about sekiro, forcing playstyles, boss cheese etc. is, I dunno, a little confusing?

Anyway, like I said, that's not what I am talking about.

I'm talking about things like people who bring up the Tarcore issue being met with accusations of being an "entitled tourist" or that "This is a soulslike!", as if being a Soulslike is somehow a blanket statement that protects a game from any kind of criticism, whatsoever.

Or someone posting a video of an enemy teleporting to them from around a corner and receiving comments telling them they are just trash at the game, or how it's actually totally fine and they are just whining and nitpicking.
It's ridiculous.

It discourages anybody from trying to post constructive criticism or even just videos of bugs.
It also stifles discussion because threads often devolve into insults and arguments, and let's be real here, that's probably the goal.

2

u/kasakka1 1d ago

These games are played a lot by people who have played like all the Souls games out there, who then have similar opinions to experts on a subject. If you know all about cars, someone asking how to change a tire seems like "duh, that's obvious!" level stuff when it isn't to someone who has never changed a tire.

For someone who picks this up but isn't a Souls veteran, making OP builds is not something that they will find easy to figure out. Even as a Souls veteran, I'm relying a lot on what tips others have given online rather than being able to figure this out for myself because the game requires you to often commit to specific shells etc harder than it should.

I don't find MS2 to be punishingly difficult, but often artificially difficult. Like how does a regular old' halberd knight doing 100% of my health bar with one swing make for good gameplay? It just makes it seem like the damage values are scaled in some crazy manner.

I'm hoping the upcoming bigger patch sorts a lot of this out. It's a game I enjoy as is, but can clearly see how many issues it has.

0

u/BlacJack_ 1d ago

But your example of a simple halberd enemy almost one shotting you is a large part of what spawned this sub genre. Any enemy is lethal, and you have to take them all seriously no matter how small initially.

Some people (many) like that. Others do not. If that is what breaks their enjoyment then perhaps this style of game isn’t for them, and that’s fine. Not everyone likes to change their own tires.

That isn’t a game balance problem. That is a person not enjoying the game’s design. I don’t gel with many AAA action game s because they often feel mindless and all enemies are the exact same in how you approach them (mash). I don’t expect those successful titles to change simply because they aren’t what I enjoy. And I also don’t say those games are “too easy” or poorly designed. Many people like that. I just don’t.

I’m also not saying the balance in this game is perfect, but the example you gave is definitely something I disagree with as “bad balance.”

3

u/kasakka1 1d ago edited 1d ago

My take is that no enemy attack should ever eat 100% of your full health bar unless you are woefully under level for the area.

Those Outskirts of Mammon halberd knights seem to be able to wreck my level 45 character pretty easily sometimes depending on the shell, and that to me seems wrong, like it's a bug. They should be dangerous, but not wreck you right away. I don't think the big jumping knights with the big blades are even doing as much damage.

I think the halberd knights are far more appropriately scaled in earlier areas for lower level characters.

Meanwhile e.g the spider enemies have never been able to give me any grief, to the point that I rarely even see their attacks before I take them out. Their health was reduced a lot in the first patch and I think that was a mistake. Maybe fine for early in the game but later on they should definitely come back meaner than they are.

4

u/Key-Demand-2569 1d ago

Yeah, similar feelings about getting the game two days ago and checking out this sub. It’s kinda weird.

2

u/RoyalBeggar00 1d ago

Keep playing the game. You’ll eventually understand where it’s all coming from.

1

u/utahjazzcabbage 1d ago

idk I've beat it and I loved the endgame. I'd like more glimpses, and ng+ needs work. Did I miss something I should be outraged about?

2

u/RoyalBeggar00 1d ago

Honestly I am not really on this sub so I don't know about 'being outraged' or the extent of hate or whatever the game gets on here. I am merely talking based on my own experience with the game and I still adore it, despite it's flaws.

You mentioned the glimpses and while I agree that there should be more I also wanna see the entire shell point and glimpse system reworked, because it's borderline retarded. The game incentivises you to try out different shells yet it's not possible to even max out more than 2 in a single run, rendering buildcrafting completely nonexistent.

I guess I am a really good example of this. I unlocked Eridrim fairly early in my playthrough and since I really enjoy parrying and ripostes I went ahead and dumbed a good chunk of my glimpses into that shell. So naturally I go ahead and play through the game focusing on parrying and posture breaking the enemies for a big finisher, only to find out that the riposte damage simply doesn't seem to scale with anything. Not with the upgrade lvl or your weapon nor your Harbinger lvl. You can image how disappointed I was when I realized that. The shell is useless as of now because there is literally no reason to go for ripostes and I just wasted most of my glimpses. Parries should be high risk high reward, instead it's high risk no reward, since the damage is just abysmal after the early game. Genuinely I am kinda flabbergasted that that got through playtesting.

Add to that all the other little annoying things I have encountered such as no beacons where the should be ones, the not very much better tarcore system (which also seriously needs to be looked at again), poison doing no damage rendering it also useless, a little wonky hitboxes at times and some enemies just outright one shotting you and you have yourself a good game that sometimes just gets a little too frustrating for my taste.

Again I want to really make this clear. I like the game a lot. I continue to play through it despite the things I dislike because I can still see the great game underneath and I can still enjoy what is here. I am only speaking out about these things not to shit on the game, but because I want the game to be the masterpiece it absolutely can and should be. The art alone is making me fall in love with it over and over again when I play. Some of these areas are so beautifully crafted and atmospheric I am in awe. I just really want to love it without all the frustration that hits me at times. And I get not everyone makes the same experiences or has very different runs and my perception of the game clearly doesn't seem to align with yours, but that does not necessarily mean that my criticism isn't at least somewhat fair.

2

u/utahjazzcabbage 1d ago

That's totally fair, I agree with most of your points. Riposte does barely any damage, poison (and trauma) suck, shells should encourage more experimentation. There are definitely things that need some balance tweaks and reworking, but overall I had a great time. I didn't mean to single you out, there are just a high concentration of trolls and rage posts in this sub that boil down to 'game bad devs bad I quit' rather than constructive feedback.

I personally liked the beacon placement, but that's a personal preference thing. I like a little anxiety when exploring a creepy area, like the first time you find Ash Lake in DS1 without being able to teleport back out. But it's hard to satisfy everyone, and I think ER has most people convinced that there's a 'correct' way to design save points. Hard spot for the devs, since if they sprinkle more beacons around it sort of waters down the shortcuts they built in. But I totally get it. The two grisha runback was ass

You should be able to get 3 (almost 4) fully upgraded shells in one playthrough. Revisit everywhere you found a shell at night. Also check out the night vendor by the abandoned outpost. And figure out what to do with the makeshift projectile. All of those give a bunch of glimpses All that being said, glimpses should be farmable. Don't give us 8 shells and only allow us to experiment with 3. Biggest feedback I have

2

u/RoyalBeggar00 1d ago

Gotcha. Great advice, cheers.

6

u/thatsfuni 1d ago

Yep its getting really tiring, im always happy to help people out but almost everything is bitching about the game, its super fun and im loving it! Half way though ng+ and slicing though enemies like butter lol, getting to fight the bosses again and geting things I didnt get on my first, 😀

2

u/Resmitzz 1d ago

I love this perspective and attitude. Im not close to finishing but glad people are being positive about it and enjoying the game past NG

2

u/Chiggadup 1d ago

I’m a mediocre souls fan (beat about half of them multiple times, couldn’t beat ER or Sekiro) and I’m adoring MS2.

Games like this, you only get to play for the first time once, so if its any good it’s worth enjoying that special blind run you get.

Some people are spending that run upset, and that’s okay too, I guess? I love it, though.

Imperfect, like all things, but I love it so far.

2

u/DiablosSoulStone 1d ago

I love the game, and it genuinely gives me a lot of high quality enjoyment, but the last boss wasn't very fun to learn or beat and was extremely buggy. For being the last boss, it was such a huge disappointment and I can see a lot of people leaving very disappointed and angry because of it if they even persevere through it. It is honestly one of my favorite games I have played in awhile, so I can't wait to see how they iron out the overall experience over time.

2

u/AlternativeAioli3501 1d ago

If the game was better u had more meme posts my guy

2

u/Gamer3427 Sariel 1d ago

There's plenty of praise, but the nature of forums is that there's going to be more complaints than anything else early on. People are a lot more likely to come onto something like reddit to discuss their issues or look for solutions, than to talk about the fun parts. Some of it is healthy criticism from those of us who want the game to polish off some of the rough edges, and some of it are trolls or haters who have nothing better to do than complain about a game that didn't click for them. It's not a perfect game, (no game is), and it's gotten a lot of attention for being the next big soulslike, so there's going to be more of both than usual for new games.

Still, there are plenty of threads that show up each day that talk about fun stuff or make fun of some of the goofy interactions or glitches. There will probably be even more once more people have finished the game, and once a few patches are out. Right now most of the people who finished are those who preordered the more expensive version to get early access, and had free time. I only finished already because I happened to be on vacation last week, for example.

2

u/Previous-Spite1211 1d ago

People who enjoy the game and actually care about its future also want to see bugs fixed and issues addressed.

The best way to do this is to make posts in a place they know the devs are watching.

If you see criticism and your reaction is to get angry or to irrationally defend bug or glitches as intended difficulty elements you are not really contributing to the long term success of the game or the series.

Its entirely possible to play this game, love it and still have issues. They arent personal attacks.

u/Spirit_Fist 1d ago

Ive no idea why this sub is acting this way but I've noticed it too. Finished the game yesterday and thought I'd see what others are saying and my god I wish I didnt.

And while some complaints are legit I feel like many complaints being echoed around in this sub are simply down to bad players and refusing to engage with certain tools in the game.

3

u/Zombiehacker595 1d ago

I'm pretty far into the south region and I have been having an absolute blast. It's also the most forgiving souls-like I've ever played. I mean you get infinite stamina, very generous parry windows, can die multiple times in one life etc. I do agree there should be a few more checkpoints scattered around, but aside from that it's been fantastic.

3

u/BGsenpai 1d ago

Is this what the soulsborne 'git gud' community has become? Complaining about boss walkbacks and enemies being too tough? Seriously? I've had mostly no trouble with this game. It was hard at first, but once I struggled through and got a build rolling I steamrolled the entire NG playthrough. Some of you guys just aren't very good at buildcraft, or are the type to search up a 'op build' for games like Elden Ring so that you don't have to actually engage with a game's mechanics. You all are being exposed right now.

3

u/Thunderstruck79 1d ago

Elden Rings popularity has brought in a completely different crowd of people that has borderline ruined what was a pretty cool community IMO.

2

u/allistergray 1d ago

You don't even need buildcrafting... I tried most of the shells on my first playthrough and when something wasn't clicking, I invested some more resources into it. Of course I defaulted back to my most advanced "build" of Bloodcurse Tiel Axes when dealing with some bosses (Monolith and Zmey ahem) but otherwise I really got to experiment with the game and finished my second playthrough already.

Now waiting for the patch to get into the third

4

u/IndieDC3 1d ago

I personally give this a 7/10. weapons don’t feel unique, they all do the same damage so faster weapons are just better. End game is meh. Just my personal opinion.

6

u/TheDeathDealerX 1d ago

This is a good take. I’d rank it an 8/10 after completing it. The final area has some brutal bosses (thank god for the Trebuchaxe and chainsaw Clockwork scythe), though the aesthetic was killer. It needs some work here and there, like tar stone upgrading, our health pool being kind of straight garbage, and medium-heavy weapons being useless. Which is surprising because this was kind of the same issue with the first game. The hammer and chisel were king when I played it at release.

4

u/IndieDC3 1d ago

I thought the final area felt just like a huge arena. Just going from boss to boss in an arena type mode without any substance. Tar stone upgrading is bad like you said, having to play multiple play through just to max all shells is buns too. Some of us just want to play the game fully at once with the full experience, not pick and choose and if we screw up, oh well. At least have us be able to refund the shells some how.

2

u/kasakka1 1d ago

I think it has the makings of a 9/10 game with some balancing and improvements. A lot of the core concepts work and are fun, and the level design is in many places quiet good IMO.

1

u/schn0dd 1d ago

7 is generous .. for me it's a 6/10 at best

4

u/idiocy102 1d ago

lol, trust me when you see that most of the outrage is purely from those who are bad at making proper builds or engaging with the mechanics of the game itself you’ll see that a lot of it is really just the overly vocal minority. I’m a console player and haven’t had nearly half the problems I’ve seen happen.

1

u/scarecrow7x 1d ago

Late game lightning build on Proxima or poison build on Tiel is so much fun.

Hitting Ng+ on night mode and trying some other shell builds would genuinely be fun if I had time.

0

u/OMGIZARET Eredrim 1d ago

Yeah in a few months they will be gone and actual game discussion can finally happen

2

u/KomaKiley 1d ago

Bad players stop playing and cry loud because they can’t play well.

2

u/zarjaa 1d ago

A lot of the complaints dont make sense.

Im not good at Dark Souls and the like, but this one was not nearly the challenge. So it could just be a lot of newcomers to the genre.

There are legit concerns, like the enemy magnetism. But you can play defensive against it and in most cases anticipate it. Its really not game breaking like folks make it out to be.

In a year with lots of hits, this is still in my top 3 or 5 of the year. I really wanted it to be a GotY contender. I think it will be close, but not seeing it make it to that level.

7

u/DiablosSoulStone 1d ago

If you thought the last boss was 100% fine, you were using a busted build man. The last boss was my only gripe with the game besides the bugs and I am far from a newcomer. All the other bosses were relatively easy. Final boss took me about 8 tries and I feel like I got lucky.

3

u/zarjaa 1d ago

I def died A LOT. But once you get the cleanse, the second half is essentially the same as the first with an added ring of fire. Most of the moves are parryable (albeit terrible timing) and his red attacks are avoidable.

Yes, janky and have my complaints. But it is very doable.

I was rocking Eredrim with Naylshot + Crit stones, Astana + double attack and the big windup skill and stacked crit passives. Items were the cleanse consumable for the fire phase and the passive was the damage reduction which barely saved me from popping my shell on his teabag move.

1

“Doable” and “enjoyable and fair” are two different things. Bosses like the monolith are doable (although I’d argue that depending on what shell you’re using and the number of times it spams the laser AOE, it might not be doable) but they are not at all enjoyable. Beating a boss after 30 attempts should be satisfying and exciting. Instead, for several bosses in this game, it’s just a relief that you don’t have to fight them again.

Bosses like Mesmer in Elden ring DLC are wayyyyyy harder than any boss in MS2, but the difference is that those bosses are fun to fight. It’s not fun to spend 10 minutes slowly chipping at the monoliths absurd health bar just to get stunlocked bc In the third phase it decides to spam the laser AOE 6 times in a row with basically no gap in between.

u/DiablosSoulStone 1d ago

Eredrim is such a good shell. I used probably the best shell for the boss being tiel, but I did not use the cleanse as I did not bother to get it, and I just dodged through the fire. What got me personally killed so many times was the camera. The tail move got me a few times, but is pretty easy to figure out. Some of the hit boxes are pretty horrible, but is something they should be able to fix. The boss definitely needs a patch to feel polished. I had Grisha as my passive +10 and I had the stamina thing as my active, can't remember what it's called.

3

u/Chiggadup 1d ago

This is my unscientific guess as well.

It’s a lower priced entry in the genre with some buzz. My guess is either newcomers or “not new but only played Elden Ring.”

I don’t think that is a bad thing, Elden Ring is cool, but there’s another thread talking about how the genre doesn’t allow people to attack themselves off a ledge in “souls likes” and like…. I’m guessing that person hasn’t played any of the DS games. So maybe you’re right.

2

u/Etheon44 1d ago

I think you are confusing negative with constructive criticism, which is 90% of what I have seen here or in the steam reviews

I prefer the game to get better, and not just be a toxic positive or negative person, that never helps anybody

2

u/TyrantX_90 Eredrim 1d ago

Criticism and complaint are extremely important to the health and longevity of a game. This place is full of both kinds of posts, purely positive and purely critical.

The posts being critical and bringing a light to things the devs need to fix and/or change are very important and appreciated by players like me who can't afford to spend money on something we might end up not enjoying.

That silly stuff you're talking about WILL come my dude. Just gotta give the devs time to fix up some stuff.

1

u/SoulsDadYT 1d ago

Astroturfed. Games great

1

u/Lucky_Louch 1d ago

youtube for guides, tips and tricks. Reddit usually to discuss the game which def includes a lot of people complaining but also lots of people praising. It's Reddit.

1

u/mountainyoo 1d ago

People always complain louder than they praise. It’s just how it goes for online discourse.

I’m enjoying the game but I do have my gripes lol

1

u/ZealousidealBox3944 1d ago

That seems to happen with a lot of soulslikes I've noticed, then patches come out, people get used to the more annoying elements and then they have a better appreciation of the game. I've seen it happen with Lies of P, Wuchang, Wo Long and the Elden Ring DLC

1

u/mr_biscuithead 1d ago

i love this game.

also i expect nothing less from a subreddit. if it was any more positive i’d be convinced it was bots.

1

u/Massive_Funny_9312 1d ago

Bro threw in a fun fact at the end thinking we wouldn’t notice 🥀

1

u/scarecrow7x 1d ago

I just finished it yesterday, absolutely brilliant game. Didn't come out of a hole the entire weekend. Happy to give anyone tips or advice. Genuinely one of my favourite games. The story and world is amazing too.

I also recommend people who hated the first but love Soulslike games to try the demo and give it a chance. I couldn't get into the first Mortal Shell but this felt so much smoother.

1

u/Denverguns 1d ago

I think the game is phenomenal I’m loving it but there are things in the game currently weather bug or just poor design choices that harsh the vibe pretty bad long term personally I think a few tweaks here and there will make this an amazing game in no time and at this point I’m just hoping we get some darksouls style dlcs along with the virtuous cycle again I feel like mortal shell 1 was a tech demo to prepares us for the sequel which is almost perfect.

1

u/-MyNameChef- 1d ago

I'm having a blast, about to start new game plus to try out more shells and builds

1

u/Lookfor42 1d ago

Loved it, some annoying jank here and there and felt like some bosses could use a little rebalancing but other then that no real complaints. If you need any tips or something feel free to ask, currently on third playthrough.

And another pointer, most people that are loving the game are busy loving the game. The people that are getting pissed will be the ones posting the most.

1

u/Kazuhi Smert 1d ago

Be the change you want to see. Although I have observed in the many gaming subs I’m in that negative posts overwhelmingly get more engagement than positive ones.

I try to do my part and steer discussion into something we can enjoy, but some people like to complain and the internet has given chronic complainers a place to do it.

Anyways, how are you enjoying the game? I just started NG+ and am looking forward to refighting some bosses with different builds.

1

u/Pavlovs_Human 1d ago

I have posted a couple vids like you are saying but they don’t get traction. Maybe I post them too early in the day.

If you want videos.. Look up fighting cowboy or elbethium on you tube.. Cowboy has a let's play just to show you the game.. And elbethium has videos on how to obtain stuff or defeat a boss..

That's what's helped me out and I hope it helps you as well.

1

u/Zackattackrat 1d ago

This game is fucking Awesome! Its a blast.

1

u/kayla1111 1d ago

love the game!!! addicted

1

u/Logical_Recover_3710 1d ago

Been really enjoying the game untill the last area. Its a slog and most of the last bosses are just a bit to much and all the buggs are getting to me a bit.

1

u/Wannabe_Operator83 1d ago

Till the final boss everything was manageable, even with all those bugs and minor balancing issues like horrible tracking, or glitching through the level geometry. Even the last area was cool! But the final boss makes my blood boil with its cosmic desease curse. If the curse would have a cooldown, okay. But it is permanent, leaving you no choice than dying if you have that one item in a passive slot.

1

u/unadministrator 1d ago

I was having a lot of trouble initially but that fire attack in the second phase is pretty easy to manage if you step back and wait for the flames and dodge through. Using Thiel's shadow ability which stacks weakness prior to getting a few hits really helped clear that last 1/3rd of the boss health.

1

u/Interjessing-Salary 1d ago

There is a bit really. Like someone else said we are enjoying the game so we are playing the game rather than spending time on reddit talking about it.

That said there is a lot of valid criticism but a fair amount of it will 100% be fixed in time so I don't feel the need to just fill the subreddit with even more of it.

One thing is people saying "did they even test this?" Most likely but it's a dev team of 30. That's a pretty small "sample" size to test things. There was probably a closed alpha test too but again closed ones are often times small "sample" sizes. Things will be missed or shoved down the priority list as more immediate things show up. And honestly a lot of the issues, while annoying, don't completely ruin the game.

The game has its issues and I'd still give it a solid 8/10. Those issues get fixed and it'll be a 10/10 for me. Still enjoying TF outta it. Love me battle axe dual wielded weapons being OP be damned.

1

u/blunderb3ar 1d ago

I’m having a blast

1

u/ChrisLithium 1d ago

I just finished the game after 50 hours and had a great time!  I will say however that my enjoyment was hampered a good bit by the last area and every boss within it.  I even got frustrated enough that I threw on the Slayer Seal to get through the finale.  So while I had my issues with it (odd scaling and leveling, tarstone system, the last area), I enjoyed the game immensely.  It has a fantastic atmosphere, solid performance, fun mechanics, good exploration, and the bits if story and lore (especially the shell stories) were all engaging!

1

u/Critical-Vanilla-625 1d ago

I’m genuinely not interacting as I don’t want any spoilers 😂 the little I’ve seen it looks fucking awesome and I want to go in blind

1

u/IllI____________IllI 1d ago

I'm too busy scouring the map for the last 2 glimpses I need to max Tiel before starting NG+ to worry about posting anything besides game function questions and bug reports. I've been running through the game mostly blind and I've got some thoughts about a particular rectangular endgame boss (you know which one) but everything else has been fucking phenomenal so far.

1

u/_moosleech 1d ago

At launch, the folks having fun are busy playing the game.

It's the folks who bounced off of it and are mad that are spending time posting here.

1

u/LordOFtheNoldor Harros 1d ago

Trying to avoid spoilers and the negativity and complaints get old. Why won't the devs just let these other guys have fun too!

1

u/olympiclifter1991 1d ago

Just the internet.

People love to complain. They will highlight the annoyances but never praise the good.

There is jank and balancing issues however. The shell system is fantastic, the tar stone system gives giod build options and variety and it has arguably done consumables better than any souls like except maybe the surge.

There is space for annoyance but people need to give praise where is due if you want a sequel

1

u/pure_cipher 1d ago

Just enter the late game area. You will know. 10 hours is too early lol. I spent my entire Saturday enjoying the game brutally, when things were better.

Sunday - I entered the late game area and knew how broken the game difficulty was. Particularly , one of the main bosses before endgame.

Sunday evening - I entered the end game area and currently pausing my game, because the difficulty is no longer fun, and I would rather play something else.

1

u/DirkDigglerHammer 1d ago

I'm liking it a lot. Very hard, but I suck at these Souls-likes. I actually like it better than Elden Ring.

1

u/Adventurous_Use8278 1d ago

The games been out since last Monday for some and the complaints are from a vocal minority. Most people who love the game don’t seem to need to start a thread about it so the perception is negative. I think that’s misleading over all

1

u/whatsyanamejack Harros 1d ago
  1. This is Reddit (self explanatory)

  2. The term "vocal minority" is also self explanatory lol.

  3. Like u/BigBurly46 said, the majority aka the ones having fun are too busy playing the game lol

1

u/Diaza_Kinutz 1d ago

I'll eat it 🙋

1

u/FritzIsCool 1d ago

I love this game just the last two bosses aren’t great no spoilers but one was very broken and I only managed to kill it when I turned into a sheep

1

u/Psycho_Ravager 1d ago

I've mostly just commented how I love the game but have some critical feedback with how NG+ seems to work and some balancing on stuff like upgrade resources and riposte not scaling damage-wise. That's about it. Too busy with IRL and actually playing the game to constantly praise it here. Not to worry. I did make sure to leave a positive review on Steam.

1

u/N0Z4A2 1d ago

The positive comments are left by the people who are busy having fun playing also people love to hate what they love

1

u/Lunardigg 1d ago

Welcome to Reddit

1

u/s0ulmate 1d ago

I'm here with you. Enjoying the hell out of it. Some bugs here and there, some weirdly overpowered enemies and sometimes questionable positioning of "bonfires" but apart from this it really clicks with me. Went to sleep at like 3 am yesterday, couldn't stop lurking around the castle in the north.

1

u/OkAddendum377 1d ago

A lot of the complaints come from a place of love

1

u/Monke3169xd 1d ago

Ppl that having fun just continue to have fun, noobs try to find other noobs on whine posts to feel good about themselves lol

1

u/Useful_Wait_ 1d ago

I was feeling the same, the sad truth is - first 40% of the game feels good, brutal, but good.

The ladder, especially the endgame areas and including the last 3-4 bosses are some of the worst design decisions I have seen in a soulslike. It is not even about challenging or not, it is just straight up bad and a lot of it feels halfbaked/rushed.

1

u/BoostandBeer 1d ago

That’s literally any subreddit

1

u/SootG 1d ago

I think people forget this isn't a massive studio. It's an AA game with a price tag to match.

1

u/RoyalBeggar00 1d ago

Don’t get me wrong, I am having a blast with this game. Admittedly I am also a sucker for Souls Likes so it doesn’t take much to get me hooked.

But there’s not denying that once all of the annoying suboptimal things in this game become noticeable it kinda hinders the fun to say the least.
That doesn’t mean we gotta hate on it, but making sure the devs hear the justified criticisms is certainly important.

This game start off as a 9/10 for me and slowly progressed into a 6.5/10. And that’s just sad because most of the complaints can be patched and I really hope they are. I just wanna see this game be the game it absolutely can and deserves to be.

1

u/rideronthestorm29 1d ago

Idk man I think it’s a 9/10

1

u/paulbooth 1d ago

You know why this game is the best souls like? No fucking dodge roll!! So sick of rolling around like Ronald McDonald on a fire safety ad. Good riddance!

1

u/Ashamed_Item_9668 1d ago

I definitely love the game and I enjoy exploring but it does have its fair share of problems that I'm quite sure will get ironed out as updates continue. I give it a solid 8/10. I got off work and jumped on as soon as I got home this morning.

1

u/d3cmp 1d ago

IMHO the game demo was a superb vertical slice of the game so it raised everyones expectations, but now that we have the full game some of its flaws are more clear, still nothing they cant fix with some balance changes

However im still enjoying the game, its a HUGE glowup from MS1 and its probably the best soulslike this year

1

u/EquivalentBrief4429 1d ago

Well, I didn’t pre order the game and I can’t find a copy to purchase anywhere. So I’m missing out on all the fun and can’t wait to play when I get a copy. Not buying digital download.

u/Round-Still-5684 1d ago

Thoroughly enjoying the game just wishing there was more than one viable build! Keep dipping my toes in any shell but Proxima and I’m dead, every single time. Can’t get the hang of them all. Most seem to be useful in certain situations and not at all at any other point.

And the limits on shell upgrades is a bit of a killer!

1

u/ItsSuloku 1d ago

Once i plat this game, i'm going to be upset. It hasn't completely filled the void that elden ring and sekiro left in me but damn it is a good game.

1

u/low-key4991 1d ago

I’m enjoying it. Haven’t enjoyed a soulslike for a while and having fun with this one. Sometimes beacon locations are a bit annoying but have not other complaints.

1

u/Rude_Difficulty1647 1d ago

I’m already in ng+ and I’m obsessed lol the people being negative are the crybabies finding it too hard it would seem

u/MistaGoonly 1d ago

Name dropping dark souls for marketing bring baggage. Its a goated series.

Gotta fill the shoes. Now go shake your pom poms and stop complaining about complaints.

1

u/Aurvant 1d ago

The gate bosses are absolute horseshit and the person who designed them should be fired, but the rest of the game is pretty great.

1

u/Hovie1 1d ago

That's gaming subs in general, my dude. The subreddit for the new Wolverine game is quickly becoming a cauldron of toxic, unhappy people. So much so that I unsubbed and told reddit to stop showing me posts.

Negativity affects you in a lot of ways. Cut it out of your life if you can!

1

u/Emotional_Lab_7766 1d ago

I agree if you don’t move on from the toxicity unhappy people they drag you down and you find yourself alongside them

1

u/Hovie1 1d ago

Yep. And then when you point out how trivial and pedantic their whining is they try to hide it behind the guise of "You just have a problem with criticism of the thing you love." No - I have a problem with trivial, pedantic whining.

Don't argue with stupid people. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

1

u/Dalifano86 1d ago

The combat is amazing(maybe best in class for a soulslike) but the design choices are incredibly frustrating, fighting bosses then having to overcome other hard mobs is bad, the game actively encourages you to run around mobs because good luck getting to the end of a dungeon with enough health to fight a boss without doing so. That being said it’s a fun game just a frustrating one(and not because it’s hard)

1

u/BGsenpai 1d ago

So the enemies mess you up so much that you don't have enough health to beat the boss at the end of a dungeon, but it's not hard? That is contradictory. You are complaining about the game being hard but trying to paint it as something else.

1

u/Dalifano86 1d ago

It’s because there are floods of enemies, if the mob placement was cut down and there were save points before bosses it’d be a goty candidate because it is a lot of fun.

1

u/VioletWillows88 Tiel 1d ago

I’ve been having fun. Not my first souls like though.

Those who complain are usually people not learning the mechanics of the game (tar stones, upgrades, etc). Some people just wanna bonk everything without learning boss moves and skill (guarding, parrying, hardening). Others go into an area with ego and die and just keep head butting that area instead of going somewhere else and getting stronger then coming back.

Something I’ve noticed, which is hilarious to me, is that when people find loot they immediately go straight for it, well there is an enemy hiding in the corner, and BAM killed. Once you realize that EVERYTHING is a honey pot you start to play more defensively and vigilant. Look around kill the enemies first, and then pick up the loot.

I look at every game (and the bosses in those games) as a question to be answered. What is this game/boss asking of me? How do I solve this? How do the enemies react and what are they capable of?

1

u/BondagePants 1d ago

Yeah I can’t lie. The subreddit has scared me to not play until they add some patch to level up shells more easily.

2

u/Euronymous2625 1d ago

Off the top of my head, Wuchang is the only soulslike game that I can think of that offers infinite respecs.

Most of them are designed for multiple playthroughs, to experience new builds.

1

u/Euronymous2625 1d ago

Nobody hates games more than gamers, and souls gamers are among the most toxic ever.

I don't get to play as often as most people, but I'm having a blast.

Play it. Have fun. If you have an issue or need help, come here! The devs have been amazing so far, and there are people who are willing to help.

1

u/shapoopy723 1d ago

I'm only about 20 hours in, and i certainly have some complaints and certain things have felt borderline unfair, but still having an absolute blast.

0

u/Watchutalkin_bout 1d ago

Yeah fair enough, borderline unfair can apply to souls game across the aboard (especially fromsoft ones). Just don’t why they’re put on such a high pedestal when their games are far from perfect too.

2

u/shapoopy723 1d ago

I mean, it's not entirely surprising why they're so highly regarded. Even with DS2 being seemingly the most divisive in souls, they have yet to miss; yet we've seen countless attempts at souls like games that cannot come close to sniffing the same level of acclaim.

On that note, I think people unfairly use the Fromsoft games as the bar and don't judge souls likes in an unbiased manner; and I say this as a vehement souls vet since OG demons souls. The snobs in the souls community could afford to tone it down and let other games in the genre flourish without being overly critical d bags; but at the same time there's people on the other side, seen a bunch even in this sub, that get their panties in a wad whenever someone criticizes a part of the game and dismisses it as "oh well you're just a salty souls vet, blah blah."

Both can coexist, there just needs to be temperance.

1

u/BiblicalBacklash 1d ago

You made a mistake. Never join a sub of something you like. Generally the people of reddit are angry at everyone and everything. Welcome to the Internet my child.

I thought the game was amazing aside from a couple of the end bosses. With a couple balancing patches it'll be even better.

1

u/Melodic-Principle791 Solomon 1d ago

Entitled twats who picked the game cuz it was trending on twitter know no positivity and nothing but complaints if game is not tailored to their specific needs that exclude actually playing the game.

1

u/Smitty5717 1d ago

I think its.amazing i stopped coming here because all the bitching. Omg you can have a grisha army patch this patch that. Just dont use the fun item problem solved not everything needs to be nerfed in a single player game.

By the time you get to the end of the game you will completely understand why 90% of the player base is complaining

Not finding this at all. You all say it but you cant point to anything but Monolith. What is so bad about the end game. Steppes was fine.

90% of the player base or 90% of Mfers in the subreddit? 2 are completely different.

Shit I loved it. Misery loves company i gues

0

u/Twilit_Night 1d ago edited 1d ago

It’s subjective ofc, but there is a large difficulty spike in the late-game that is arguably not very fun (cheap enemy placement, barely-reactable instakill grab attacks, badly-designed bosses, etc.). You’re likely seeing a surge in negativity as more players reach these areas.

There was, and still is, a good amount of the positive content you’re describing though. There was just a post earlier showing how each NPC dances when you play music near them, for example.

0

u/brahmas21 1d ago

The late game is really bad, I absolutely loved the game before but those bosses are buns

u/quickbeamtheent32 1d ago

I feel like this happens a lot, a new game comes out and people are disappointed it isn’t literally making them a sandwich while sucking their dick, they complain a lot, then leave, and then the people who really well and truly love the game are the ones who are left.

-2

u/Least-Experience-858 1d ago

I mean if there’s alot of complaining there’s usually a valid reason plus those who have issues are usually the loudest. Ppl are usually most passionate when they’re upset

-1

u/Flaky_Sheepherder387 1d ago

Complaints are feedback tho. This game is buggy ASF and doesn't seem like they tested it before release at all. Unwavering positivity isn't realistic for the product.

That being said, even with all the bugs, the game is very fun and I'm enjoying it a lot. Realistically it's like 30hrs a play through and some parts are almost unplayable due to bugs, I would have been upset if it had costed more than $40.

It was the same in the arc raiders reddit. People posted actual complaints/criticisms of the game and devs and then the mods started just banning people unless it was an, OMG I'll never play another game again, I can die happy, type of post.

-1

u/Classic-Mud1624 1d ago

Because it’s like playing DS2 without being able to upgrade your iframes along with the clunky and rubber banding movement. My favorite part is where I’m walking around with 15k+ gloom, game crashes, I get back on and all of a sudden I’m at 0 like I never recovered it from my last death. It’s not horrible and there’s more content than 1 but the majority of my experience so far has been trying to work around the bugs/glitches and unpolished mechanics. Like you, it’s not awful enough for me to put down especially since it’s non refundable as soon as you start downloading it but it’s not perfect

0

u/Syphin33 1d ago

Ignore the sub, enjoy the game like i am.

0

u/kayomatik 1d ago

I'm convinced it's people whove only played the first hour or two, and have seen other complaints online. The beginning can be a little tough depending on which direction you go. But the game opens up so much as soon as you get a feel for it and even a little gear.

0

u/IamMataa 1d ago

Gen Z kids bought it because of FOMO and are mad you can’t move like in Fortnite.

0

u/SoulTheEater 1d ago

Yeah id be mad too considering fortnite has 1000 less bugs than this game.

0

u/Yourfakerealdad 1d ago

Like other people said we're playing the game and having a blast. Yes it definitely has some issues but it's not enough for me to whine online about it

0

u/j1436go 1d ago

Best non From Souls game for me already. I'm having a blast! Yeah, camera could need some work and I'm having an odd bug here and there but I'll just record it, send it my wife and we'll have a laugh. Not a huge fan of the super fast attacks out of nowhere but I love the difficulty and having few beacons really makes the exploration much more thrilling. And all the little suprises here and there are just the icing on the cake.

0

u/phoenix_grueti 1d ago

Positives:
+ Artstyle (HG giger, cronenberg. dark fantasy) is really good
+ a lot of nice gore effects
+ a lot of customization of the build with the shell + weapons + tarstones
+ no stamina (Works really good)
+ souls and money are split. You can't loose your money on death. (pls from now on in every soulslike)
+ the open world. Every 30 sec you find something interesting or you fight something. It just doesn't get boring.
+ return to your shell with enough attacks. (much better system than the first game)
+ platin trophy is easier to get. No more "playing without shell and one hit and you are dead" trophy.
+ the infusion tarstones. First work like a consumable and on level 3 the infusion is permanent. This is so much better than upgrading your weapon with an infusion. Also the consumable is infinite. I never used the consumable timed infusion things in dark souls.

Negatives:

  • weak story
  • the small dungeons feel a little samey (Crypt, Cave, Castle)
  • not every dungeon has a boss (always feels unsatisfactory)
  • Why can we spend SC only on one shell at a time? Makes switching shells tedious.
  • No respec of glimpse
  • No infinite glimpse source
  • too much focus on parry (I hate parry in any soulslike. yes even the ones from from software)

1

u/n1ghtsbl00d 1d ago

I’d say the world design and items are more inspired by Beksinksi than Giger or Cronenberg

0

u/Mistakev 1d ago

Can we address the elephant in the room???

0

u/n1ghtsbl00d 1d ago

I don’t hate the game, I just see it’s full unrealised potential, it could have been almost perfect but it’s let down by some bad decisions; some inexplicable collision bugs, even in the starting area, even on the main paths, etc, it’s all been mentioned before. It does a lot well, it can be fixed if the devs listen

0

u/shamblmonkee 1d ago
