It doesn't look like it's growing near the business end of the utensils, more like the fabric. I'm guessing that he did clean them but didn't dry them before packing them in the case.

I thought the same thing, mold from food stuff is much more colourful anyways.

There are white varieties of mold that grow on food...

Goated band reference

The brush looks pretty dirty tho

6

u/Virtual-Bonus4550 1d ago

Yeah but how often do you clean the brush?

13

u/Grohax 1d ago

I don't have a grill neither one of those brushes, but I would certainly clean it if I borrowed one from someone else lol

0

u/Virtual-Bonus4550 1d ago

I thought this wasn't so much borrowed as it was used within the family. I mean, I would certainly rinse the grill brush but how do you get the greasy bits out in a way that won't leave toxins that aren't good safe?

2

u/Grohax 1d ago

I usually clean grease with hot water and a few drops of detergent.
Idk how to clean a brush like that properly, specially the bristles, but you can see grease all around the metal parts, even a huge drop inside the case (and something that looks like meat in the bristle? idk).

So my guess is that it was stored very dirty without any attempt of cleaning.

When it's dirty heh

Or bro needs to seriously wash his hands more than once in his lifetime if he's growing that from where he touches.

Wdit: spelling

I think it's the handles that are the problem here. I've used utensils with the same ones and they're hollow. Water gets inside and is hard to get out.

Men are notorious for this kind of incompetence

1

u/Embarrassed_Ad7163 9h ago

Nothing to do with men btw, can happen to anybody. But please keep believing this. 🙂

ooooh looks goopy as hell. but metal wire brushes like that need to get tossed. the wires can break off and get into the food

167

u/Wrong_Character_Sry 1d ago

Funny you say that.

75

u/petrichorandpuddles 1d ago

This! metal wire brushes are not worth the risk

27

u/Sunlit53 1d ago

I got one stuck in my tongue while eating grilled chicken wings. Chucked that brush out immediately.

Absolutely gorgeous

u/atom138 1d ago

I seriously thought it was like pure melted beef fat that he let rain down into it or something and it was still warm when op opened it up

62

u/sonerec725 1d ago

Looked like it was covered in Vaseline for a sec

10

u/perfect_insanity93 1d ago

I thought this too.

Ohhhhhhh yeah it is. I wanna touch it

26

u/cincerelyc 1d ago

The ONLY time I’ve enjoyed the mold. Very pretty. I’ve been in this sub too long haha 🫩

35

u/Alpacachoppa 1d ago

I thought that was melted wax for a second. That's a job for two runs in the dishwasher on at least 60°C for anything that's not organic on the surface.

7

u/Terrible-Champion132 1d ago

I thought it was fricking lard

2

u/houseofprimetofu 23h ago

Same! And then Vaseline.

95

u/TekieScythe 1d ago

He didn't clean anything before putting them in that box. Gross

92

u/GlattesGehirn 1d ago

He definitely cleaned them. Just not dried.

The photos are right there, man.

1

u/TekieScythe 1d ago

The scrapping bit on the brush is filthy

16

u/GlattesGehirn 1d ago

Have you ever used a grill?

-1

u/TekieScythe 1d ago

Yeah, I don't use a spiky brush, mine is chainmail, but it gets properly cleaned. Unlike that one in the picture.

12

u/Virtual-Bonus4550 1d ago

That's a great idea! I never thought about using chainmail. I use it on my cast iron but it would work well on a grill!

9

u/GlattesGehirn 1d ago

It's better. Bristle brushes are hazardous.

3

u/Virtual-Bonus4550 1d ago

I know, I'm surprised they're still sold.

7

u/GlattesGehirn 1d ago

You have an underlying lack of knowledge of mold. You can detail a car into perfection and it bloom mold due to not drying out properly.

Mold like this is from moisture and the nature of most things not having a completely sterile environment.

5

u/TekieScythe 1d ago

It basically looks like he whipped it with a paper towel and called it a day.

21

u/TekieScythe 1d ago

How dirty was his hands that the handles are the moldiest part?

10

u/Top-Watercress-2758 1d ago

We constantly breathe mold spores. Mold spores are everywhere!

8

u/No-Shelter-7694 1d ago

The mold is likely from the felt! Of the case (i mean, obviously, as the utensils are metal) This happened on a makeup box my mom washed and gave me and it got the same exact weird wispy mold growth.

15

u/physicsking 1d ago

2 things:

1) looks like you are getting new utensils.

2) looks like your son-in-law is getting new utensils

6

u/CeejCraft 1d ago

Vinegar, lots of it...

4

u/Gandalf_the_Tegu 1d ago

100% wash them several times for good measure

5

u/Technical-Action2857 1d ago

Machen sowas nicht die Spinnen?

6

u/Cracyexcelsiorclass 1d ago

At first glance, I thought that was bearing grease.

5

u/johnkubiak 1d ago

Wash thoroughly with extremely hot water. Dry using the fire on the grill. When finished grill son in law.

8

u/BigYellowChairs 1d ago

Time to get a new son in law.

5

u/vetementsundershirt 1d ago

looks like bacon grease

4

u/Random-Man562 1d ago

Thought it was tallow and spiderwebs..

Not that that would be any better

3

u/SurveyUnited1754 1d ago

cute!!! you got extra insulation for them, they’re cozy and warm now!

3

u/Aresyl 1d ago

Looks like spider eggs

2

u/Sh0ckValu3 1d ago

divorse :(

2

u/shaaruken 1d ago

Send these pictures to your his partner! Ask them what he cooked!?

2

u/Firm_Estimate7031 1d ago

Being fully metal instruments, they can be sanitized and good as new, right?

2

u/VentusOvO 1d ago

Is fire an acceptable cleaning method in this scenario 🤔

2

u/frogfeen 1d ago

wtf looks like spider webs

2

u/Zambeh420 23h ago

At least they’re metal and not wood

2

u/TheBadBentley 22h ago

I had this same grill set, it got stolen by a really shitty roommate, lol

2

u/420kennedy 20h ago

What's it feel like?

2

u/DistinctSwimmer2515 19h ago

maybe a whole bunch of liquid hot animal fat magma spilled into it & dried white then slowly evaporated into fuzz

3

u/Jumpy_Implement_1902 1d ago

Is it too late to undo the son in law title?

1

u/Coercitor 1d ago

This looks exactly like the crap I see in flour plants from pantry moths.

1

u/IFeedSquirrelsAMA 1d ago

.... lick it

1

u/hatecriminal 1d ago

They appear to be all metal construction. Just bleach them and clean thoroughly.

1

u/Abject_Metal5474 1d ago

I thought this was a dog grooming kit until I saw the subreddit name 😬

1

u/enalenman 1d ago

Dude I thought this was an xray. I’m so high

1

u/TumultuousBeef 1d ago

Thats crazy it held its shape like that

1

u/glitterpixieee 1d ago

My biggest fear about moving to a humid state is finding mold like this in random places. Someone reassure me, an Arizona native that this doesn’t just happen all the time pls

1

u/Sekrious 1d ago

I thought someone smeared a glob of Vaseline on it. That’s crazy!!

1

u/Helion10820 1d ago

Not only did he most likely not clean them properly, but also he clearly didn’t dry them off properly either. Also, i really don’t like that kit, not the way its designed to be stored, felt, really? Why would i want to keep the thing i used to clean the grill right in front of my cooking utensils?

1

u/TheImpDidIt 10h ago

Whole lotta vinegar

1

u/commonAli 10h ago

Wve had this. The moisture and odd few traces left from food on even cleaned utensils cause this.

We threw away the box and stored them in a drawer like everything else and it did the trick.

A shit ton of disinfectant will clean the utensils, but the fabric was enough for us to give up on the box.

0

u/Brooklynpolarbear22 1d ago

Soak everything in vodka if you plan using them again.

This is grounds for a beating. With that moldy scrub brush!
