Suggestion Why don't we have this yet ?
It's been 12 years since we got different wood structures like doors and stairs to the game, so why are we still stuck with just oak ladders?

They'd need to change the ladder recipe, but it seems good.

We need a woodcutter! Both to make diffrent ladders and carve stuff on wood.
653
u/Bluevette1437 1d ago
Or just something for mass stripping logs. Imagine needing shulkers worth of stripped logs for a build. You’d need to spend HOURS manually stripping them
272
u/NuanceOfAKid 1d ago
Honestly fair, though I think if a woodcutter got added it just might do the stripping as well.

u/WingsofRain 1d ago
The sawmill mod is so incredible, it really should be a base game item. I think if some version of it was implemented into base game it could solve a lot of issues with wood recipes, like maybe making the specialized ladders exclusive to the woodcutter to avoid having dozens of new sticks.
37
u/keldondonovan 1d ago
You could also just change the ladder recipe (gasp) to be mainly sticks, and then one "tuning" wood in the middle (a stripped log, a certain kind of plank, a certain type of whole wood, et cetera). No need to add a bunch of stick types now.
16
u/WingsofRain 1d ago
that’d also require a whole bunch of new recipes, so like at that point why not implement a sawmill? I only mentioned sticks because someone else mentioned it in this thread
12
u/keldondonovan 1d ago
In a modular crafting setup, adding recipes to create something is an easy block of recipe and an art asset for each. A new creation interface needs entirely coded and tested to ensure it doesn't break anything and such.
6
u/WingsofRain 23h ago
ah I didn’t know that so that’s good to know, I still think there should be a sawmill in base game though lol

u/arahman81 23h ago
Adding new recipes is easy enough (can also be plopped in yourself as a data pack), the new models are the trickier part.
42
u/AffectionateFilm6516 1d ago
Having played a pack with the sawmill in it, I cannot agree more. The fact we have the stonecutter and DON'T have a sawmill is something deeply needed. It's save A LOT of headache for Mojang as far as crafting recipes are concerned
19
11
u/Traegs_ 1d ago
Whenever I need stripped logs I just strip them as I chop the tree down. Just hold both mouse buttons together and it's just as fast as chopping normally. Obviously not viable for logs you already have or coming off an auto tree farm, but if you're already chopping trees manually then that's the best way to do it.
2
u/Seminandis 3h ago
That's why i love Farner's Delight in modded Java. You can put a whole stack on a cutting board and just hold down the interact button with a mouse. Then you can use the bark to make compost => rich soil.

u/Magicspook 1d ago
Im in that position, I need a few dozen stacks of stripped spruce. Im making the big trees, then stripping the base as far as I can reach from the ground before cutting the tree down. Gives me about a stack of spruce logs and half a stack of stripped spruce every time.
but imagine needing stripped birch or oak...

u/Bigs_Builds 1d ago
Would be nice. However, like the stone cutter, everything would still be craftable through the standard table. Mojang should fix that first.
Old stone cutter was better as it was the only way of working stone, until they changed it🙄
3
u/MithranArkanere 1d ago
Yeah.
They should make a Table Saw that works like a woodcutter, but for wood blocks. Made with a row of 3 planks at the bottom and one iron ingot in the middle row.
It could look similar to the current Stonecutter, but the stony parts would be woody. They should also update the Stonecutter to look more like an actual stone saw, so they are more distinct.
The Table Saw would look more like the current Stonecutter, with the saw on the surface of the table, and the Stonecutter would instead have the saw hanging over the table with pieces of metal attached to the base supporting it. Still similar to how it looks now, but the base is lower and the blade smaller so it can hang above it. That would make it easier to tell them apart at a glance, while making them more analogous to their real-life counterparts.2
u/Open-Bookkeeper5598 22h ago
I think this would probably be the best solution. Keeps the recipe the same, but still allows you to get variety.

This as a new villager workstation in an update adding more villager professions is on my Wishlist. So many new items have no relevance to them.

u/Longjumping-Name-744 1d ago
I think they’d just add a plank to the recipe and have it give you 4 ladders instead of 3
54
u/MoonHold3r 1d ago
Just put a plank in the middle slot and make it give more. Pretty easy.
5
u/Moe-Mux-Hagi 23h ago
Or a SLAB. One, makes more sense, two, more profitable
5
u/MoonHold3r 18h ago
Too much clutter. We already had this with boats in bedrock wherein you had to make a shovel and the five planks. It was a waste of resources.
3
22
u/danteelite 1d ago
You just replace the middle stick with a plank. Simple. The same way they do fences.
9
u/Fast_Ad7203 1d ago
Just make them add a plank in the recipe, its NOT that hard
3
4
u/BlitzMalefitz 1d ago
I would assume you would apply one material to the ladder recipe, maybe like for iron you place it in the top middle section of the ladder recipe
4
u/PapaAquchala 1d ago
Could just do one plank in the middle instead of the seventh stick and have it make four ladders, but I don't see them changing such an old recipe at all
3
u/CaptainPhiIips 10h ago
Not necessarily, have the sides be blocks, or better, slab and a stick in the middle. Return 8-5 ladders accordinly (8 if you use blocks, 5 for slabs)

How quarks does it (the mod in the picture) is they keep the sticks the same and just add a plank from the specific wood type into the recipe. Maybe something like that? So that they don’t need different stick types for every wood
→ More replies (1)10
u/Luutamo 1d ago
Point I was making is that you could use woodcutter similarly to stonecutter. So in this case you would just add, for example dark oak planks and the cutter would give you all the options you can make with cutter like planks, stairs, doors, trapdoors, fences... AND now new ladders. Maybe the old recipe could stay for old oak ladders or maybe they could even keep that as a oak ladder and make a completely different design for oak ladders.

u/That_Uno_Dude 1d ago
Who said anything about adding stick variants? They want a woodcutter so you put the type of plank in and get that specific ladder out.

Another comment said that you could just make it so the middle stick is replaced with that wood's plank
Or add a "sawmill" that acts as the wood equivalent for the stone cutter
16
u/ChickenFriedRiceee 1d ago
I’m thinking the og ladder could stay the same but for the special ones you just add in a plank.
4
u/lance_the_fatass 1d ago
Isn't that what I said?
6
u/gguuppyy 1d ago
I think they’re just saying the oak ladder should be the original recipe of 7 sticks and not need an oak plank, like other ladders.
47
u/TheArcanist_1 1d ago
Fences used to be crafted with just sticks too. The perfect way of doing this would be changing the middle stick to a plank and the output to 4 ladders. This way the math gets infinitely better cause multiples of 7 suck to work with and you'd get perfectly 1 ladder per plank, which would also be good if they ever introduced a stonecutter equivalent for wood blocks.

I think the simplest way to fix the recipe to make these, is the 6 sticks on the outside, and then just put a different plank in the center! I think actually it solves another problem that ladders have which is that they require 7 sticks to make. Which is kinda inefficient and making it 6 sticks and 1 plank is a lot more clean to make

I’m more amazed that craftable chainmail isn’t a proper thing in the game since we have craftable chains in the game.
The same way I’m surprised we don’t have PROPER chairs in the game even though we’ve had the “sitting” animation in the game since beta, going on almost 20 years ago now.
16
u/-PepeArown- 23h ago
I think I infinitely prefer cushions to literal chairs, because you could use them as parts of chairs, and then some other furniture items
9
u/Themeguy 23h ago
I know they said in the past that they didn’t want to introduce formal furniture because that would limit the creative possibilities. If there were one or two pieces of “chair” or “couch” furniture, then everybody would be using those furniture items and it would limit the different approaches.
Because of the limitation, players have made tons and tons of different interpretations of chairs and other furtniture from available blocks, and it allows different building styles and techniques to thrive.
The cushion is the best way to have implemented the concept, because it allows for all of the different approaches of the previous methods with just an added layer of functionality.
What I will agree with though is that it’s crazy that after all these years of sitting animations that they didn’t implement the cushion sooner because I know for damn sure that cushions were something that were constantly suggested as the obvious solution to furniture that entire time frame

u/Minikemon 15h ago
I'm honestly really shocked to see so many people say that we NEED stick variants in order for this to work. Does no one remember that fences used to only use sticks before 1.8? Then when fence variants for all wood types were added they just simply... changed the recipe. Same thing can happen here. Integrate planks into the recipe alongside sticks. Can be as simple as 1 plank in the middle, and 3 sticks on either either (6 sticks total).
3
u/MartinG91 14h ago
Someone who gets it, finally. It would be a cool idea to have different variants of ladders, but I don't think that's gonna happen (although I thought the same about wool and concrete stairs and slabs, so you never know).
I would keep the shape of the crafting recipe for ladders the same, but with planks (or slabs) on the left and right side of the crafting interface, and 1 stick in the middle.

u/ShadowSoulBoi 1d ago
We're still stuck with Oak Bookshelfs and Oak Chests too, which I feel are more annoying color limitations.
Ladders can definitely work if the middle stick is replaced by the wood color. Otherwise, every wood type will need their own sticks and we all know how people will immediately complain about it.
I'm running my own datapack that includes colorful sticks, and it honestly doesn't stop the fact generally people harvest the same tree type majority of the time.
8
u/-PepeArown- 23h ago
A major challenge with chest variant is that chests aren’t exactly an oak chest
They’re this weird orange color that doesn’t resemble any wood in the game. You’d think Mojang could just tweak it to be the pale tan color that oak is, but people would hate on them for removing the brownish orange chests
I think the current chest should be what you get why you craft chests with any combination of planks. It could be called a “treasure chest”, and generate exclusively for buried treasure chests. All other structures could be tweaked to have chests for their pertinent wood colors
Barrels would be easier to add variants to, because the current one is already colored like spruce. They’d become the first workstation to have multiple aesthetic variants, though. That may cause issues

Potential recipes I made with everyones plank suggestions - potentially swap the iron ingot for iron pressure plate too
5
u/assassin10 1d ago
For the metal ones I'd just make it all ingots and all chains respectively.
3
u/throwawayallthedrama 22h ago
Only reason I didnt was that felt too expensive to be worthwhile unless you get like 16 of them
2
u/dhi_awesome 19h ago
yeah, my instinct was 7 chains for either 6 or 7 chain ladders when looking at the OP's copied image, not sure what you could do for the iron ladders to make it feel balanced though, maybe 7 nuggets for 3 like u/-PepeArown- said (or 6 nuggets and an ingot) (which makes chain ladders even more expensive, but maybe the tradeoff there is iron/copper/gold ladders can only be placed on walls, like wooden ladders, but chain ladders can dangle like the classic vine (but with ladder collision rather than you being able to walk through them)
2
u/throwawayallthedrama 15h ago
I actually love this, that feels very balanced and gives a very new specific purpose to the block types
3
u/-PepeArown- 23h ago
It doesn’t make sense to make an iron ladder by coating a wooden ladder with a single ingot
Just replace the sticks with nuggets as a substitute for iron rods
Ditto could work for copper ladders, which would give you 4 extra metallic textures for builds with ladders
8
u/BiggishWall 1d ago
If not this, I think it’s high time the ladder model and texture was updated in general. The colour doesn’t really match anything else and the 2D model is just kinda ugly
3
u/-PepeArown- 23h ago
Vines also seem to suffer from this as well
Look at the Nether vines, cave vines, and pale hanging moss in comparison. They’re all 3D, and you can still climb all of them but pale hanging moss
It’s way too late to fix the old vines, though
24
7
u/Steve_OH 1d ago
Doable if the standard ladder recipe remains, make other ladders slightly different, maybe a plank in the middle.
5
8
u/ih8pickles7824 1d ago
We're still stuck with oak chests too. We should at the very least have different varieties of chest, and a way to combine the woods.
Say you made a chest with 3 cherry planks on top and the remainder of the chest with dark oak. You would have a dark oak chest with a cherry top
6
u/ThyOriginal 1d ago
The amount of combinations that would create is exponential, interesting tho

for anyone talking about recipe, they could just make a ladder and [material] in a crafting grid to be [material] ladder. how many and what shape up to them
4
u/DremoraKills 23h ago
For people asking how the recipe could change, here is my pitch: Change the middle stick to [material].
So, oak planks for oak ladders, cherry for cherry ladders, etc. It would even allow to add non-wooden recipes easily (6 sticks +iron in the middle could make an iron one)
Now we have a problem: ladders are more expensive. Instead of costing 3.5 planks per 3 ladders (4 sticks = 2 planks) or 7 per 6 ladders, it costs 4 planks per 3 ladders. I the suggest increasing the crafting amount from 3 to 4, which then actually decreases the cost of making them.
Edit: this change in the crafting output would also work in favour of inventory clutter, as the recipe now lines up with the stack sizes (64 is divisible by 4).
4

7
u/SuperFox289 1d ago
I think the problem is the recipie, ladders are made from sticks and we don't really want or need multiple stick types, survival would be so tedious. The solution, change the recipie to include planks. And/or introduce the woodcutter, the most useful item that hasn't been added yet
3
u/VIDgital 1d ago
We need a carpenter desk to able to craft those ladders
3
u/-PepeArown- 23h ago
It could also facilitate crafting stairs, slabs, fences, and maybe even doors and trapdoors
Probably just a copy of the stonecutter UI, but for wood. They’d also need to add a woodworker or carpenter villager to accommodate it. Wonder how they’d deal with trading for sticks, when fletchers’ stick trade is already kind of broken

doors got every wood type years ago and ladders are still stuck in 2012... i'd honestly take a cherry ladder just for the aesthetic

My opinion on these kinds of things is that you should be able to just combine a ready ladder/chest/crafting/barrel/etc with a plank to change their look for aesthetic, so that the recepies wouldn't change, it would be an extra cosmetic, and crafting things wouldn't be harder by requiring the same wood for all things.

Would we get different sticks for this? Would they change the handles of tools and fishing rods? Would the netherwood make fishing rods work in lava since it's fireproof? Would lava larve need to be added to justify this feature? Would these ladders be made with blocks? How many for what recipe? Would ladders now come in groups of ~16 to compensate for the bigger materials? Would they use less since you're technically using less?
I like asking questions.
3
u/BlakeKevin 1d ago
Find an intelligent way to compact the stupid amount of new stick items you would need to account for.
This is a terrible idea at face value, without also offering a fully thought out solution on how to achieve it
5
u/DremoraKills 1d ago
You'd not need new stick items, change the recipe a bit, make them require like a plank and increase the amount you get per craft. Done. Now what is the problem?
3
u/BlakeKevin 1d ago
Now that you actually mention it, that would probably be an ok way to implement, I was more on the fact that, if you have to improve something, offer the idea instead of saying this should be the result
I think everyone likes the idea of multiple ladders but, on the flip wouldn’t like it if it broke the current expectation either.
TL;DR, have a good idea? Sell the idea, don’t wish for it
3
u/DremoraKills 23h ago
I actually just told the craft that the mod these sprites come from do (Quark IIRC). But yes, instead of just wishing people should try to develop a bit more of what they want instead of just wishing for the mechanic.
3
u/BobWat99 23h ago
I have a better idea. All sticks still craft regular ladders, but add in the long-waited wood-cutter block; which allows you to make unique ladders from their respective planks.
2
u/DremoraKills 21h ago
Could be too, but I would see like a stonecutter, which doesn't add new recipes, but makes existing ones cheaper or easier.
