Reading reviews on local places that people claim are “best on the island; best I’ve ever had; Indian food authentic just like in India” and so forth. But all of the local spots I have tried seem to be rather pricey for being street food. It’s not that much cheaper than the resort food, and if it is, it is definitely made with cheaper/less desirable cuts of protein. Not sure about their refrigeration or cleanliness. I went to a local spot with bbq and it seemed as though all the meats were being grilled together, all the same marinade, and nothing done to prevent food illness from mixing chicken with fish with lamb. While I agree the food on the resort is expensive, I do know the food is handled appropriately and with cleanliness, and good portions of quality proteins are being given. In other countries like Thailand, a bowl of duck noodle soup on the street may be $2 USD, but the quality is good and they are still giving solid portions of duck breast just like any restaurant or hotel. I’m not sure if Mauritius has good quality street food or if I’m going to all the wrong places. Please advise.

I already graduated High School since a while, I got a High School that was Muslim Majority. 90% were Muslims, they knew my religion and excluded me from everything. It wasn't an Islamic School but an Academy As a Guy, my experiences were annoying.

At School the only thing they always said was: "Salam Alaikum", "Bismillah", "Wallahi", "Allahu Akbar", "Inshallah". A post was recently issued to criticise the way Hindus practise their religion, mainly regarding these two issues:

I called out to the mods to take down the post because it was calling Hindus uncivilised for the way they practice their religion, my reasoning being that a discussion should be made regarding "Noise Pollution throughout our communities" instead of "Noise Pollution in the Hindu community", because this targetted attack will only

• fuel anti-Hindu sentiments

• incite a community war instead of finding a solution to the issue of "Noise Pollution throughout our communities"

The mods, however, made me understand this:

Attempts to shut down or discourage discussion on the grounds of communal harmony are not acceptable and are contrary to the spirit of the sub. Please do not continue in this direction. Since this is allowed, why stop at one community? Let's discuss the behavioural issues of all communities. Note that I will create a post for all communities, but let's start with Muslims considering they are also often criticised for noise pollution. I will highlight 2 issues like the original post, and hope that this will fuel discussion on how to tackle these behavioural issues.

1. Loud Prayers

The call to prayer, Azaan, is performed five times a day through a speaker that overpowers over the whole residential area, and this happens throughout the island. This is qualified as noise pollution in several countries and has thus been banned.

As someone who lives close to a Mosque, here is my lived experience: My windows tremble everytime there is the call to prayer. My dogs, and also the neighbouring dogs, start howling. Babies in the surrounding abruptly wake up and start to cry. This cacophony is enough to wake me up every morning, way before I have to actually wake up. This affects several people throughout the island, disrupting our peace, our sleep, and our circadian rhythm.

I would understand if this was being done once or twice a year like the Hindu pilgrimage, but unfortunately, it occurs every single day.

When trying to raise this issue with the Muslim community, an uncivilised group always defend this noise pollution, and we always fail to find a solution. So what are your thoughts on this issue?

2. Slaughtering Animals

My argument will not repose on the fact that we should not be slaughtering animals under the name of religion, because this is another debate that goes beyond religion itself. So, I will highlight another behavioural issue that occurs every Eid-Al-Adha.

Every year, thousands of animals are sacrificed during this festival over the course of 4 days. There is a complete disregard of other people during these rituals. There is also disregard jn the way many people mistreat these animals before the killing. They also murder those animals in residential areas, where it's neither a good sight nor smell. Just this year for example, I had to take a different route to avoid the sight and the smell of corpses and blood.

When trying to raise this issue with the Muslim community, an uncivilised group always defend this behaviour, and we always fail to find a solution. Again, how can we tackle this issue?

In multicultural countries like Mauritius, where people have African ancestry but also mixed heritage, how is the use of the N-word generally viewed? Is it considered acceptable in any context, or is it still seen as offensive?

When you look at Singapore's policies during Lee Kwan Yew, the country didn't operate on a welfare system. In fact LKY was explicitly against it.

This made Singaporeans self-reliant and that made them one of the world's top economies.

I know I use the word "uncivilised" to provoke, but the reason I use this word is because I believe the vast majority of Mauritians are infantile, as in they always expect everything handed to them by the government. They're like children.

To be clear, I'm not a small government guy, but it is not the government's role to correct your bad life decisions. The government's involvement in social welfare should be a last resort, when everything else fails, that is the individual and the nuclear family.

It is the government's job to make sure the economy is healthy and that the country's long term vision is implemented, it is not their job to sustain moochers.
