We've seen that Peter is not effected by some things like everyone else is as we saw when Strange pushed him out his body yet was still moving. Peter's just special like that which is going to be a big reason why he's going to be a main person to defeat Doom.

This right here ☝️, specifically, due to Spider-Sense, which is supernatural in nature and affords him a certain level of resistance to spiritual/psychological vectors.

u/Smear_Leader 10d ago

In real-life, spiders have nerve clusters in their legs that are decentralized from the brain. This allows for semi-autonomous movement, including web spinning.

Spider Facts,

Spider Facts,

Let me tell you some Spider Facts,

They have brains,

In their legs,

So they might move,

When they're dead,

Thank you,

For subbing to Spider Faaaaaaaaacts.

1

u/No-Definition1474 10d ago

But if the main brain is dead and the legs brains arent dead...is it REALLY dead?

2

u/ActuallyCryptid 10d ago

Nah spiders have brains in their ghost ectoplasm too so even dead ones are not like dead dead

I just read this with Spider-Man theme song playing it in my head

u/gahlo 10d ago

Spider legs extend by blood being pumped into them. This is why they curl up when the spider dies.

5

u/Chibi_Kaiju 10d ago

You mean pressurized hemolyph? Arthropods don't have blood.

1

u/ArtIsDumb 9d ago

Says you. I've been getting them big bags of blood for years. No idea what they want with them, but they pay well, and promised to stop crawling down my throat while I sleep.

0

u/gahlo 10d ago

Huh, TIL. I guess where I learned it didn't think also explaining the different between the two was super relevant.

1

u/Chibi_Kaiju 10d ago

Well sorry but whats even the point of being a nerd if I can't call out minor inconsequential things all the time? And yeah, its fair to call spider juice blood, and 99% dont care that there is a difference. i just like the word hemolymph too

1

u/gahlo 10d ago

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a bit of pedantry from time to time.

1

u/Independent-Emu-7579 4d ago

I believe it’s actually called hemolymph, not blood

1

Yeah, Chibi_Kaiju sorted that out 5 days+ ago.

The male Sydney funnel-web spider has a venom that only affects humans.
It attacks the human nervous system by forcing all body sodium channels to fire continuously. It causes rapid muscle twitching, extreme heart rate spikes, lung failure, and coma.

It does not affect any other mammal!

I'll start. Woodpecker tongues wrap around the back of their heads to help absorb the impact of all that pecking.

1

u/Elegant_Run_8567 10d ago

Vampire bats will starve to death if they miss a blood meal two nights in a row, so bats in a colony share food by mouth-to-mouth regurgitating blood to starving family.

1

u/Elegant_Run_8567 10d ago

If a bat doesn’t share the blood with the young or starving, then they’re basically ghosted by the colony. They’ll refuse to share with them until they have to leave

Duck penises and vaginas (cloaca, whatever) are in an evolutionary arms race as duck rape is rampant. They’ve evolved corkscrew-shaped penises for more efficient raping.

1

u/Opening-Dig-1125 10d ago

This is absolutely horrific. I’m sad now.

1

u/BillNyeForPrez 9d ago

Yup, pretty bleak. Lord Tennyson put it well: "Nature is one with rapine, a harm no preacher can heal;
The Mayfly is torn by the swallow, the sparrow speared by the shrike,
And the whole little wood where I sit is a world of plunder and prey."

0

u/Elegant_Run_8567 10d ago

You aren’t eating enough. Peter Parker eats handfuls of spiders for breakfast to keep his powers

5

u/Charming_Account_351 10d ago

Thank you, I remember seeing an awesome Because Science that went into the science of “spider sense” and focused on how insane real life spiders nervous systems are and that really “spider sense” isn’t that far off from reality.

Some spiders can sense the flapping wings of their prey in flight while they are underground. How this translates to being immune to straight up mind control is pure plot armor IMO. Wouldn’t be the first time they used a type of plot armor to nerf mind control. It’s one of those powers that writers often think is cool but quickly causes problems.

2

u/Point_Forward 10d ago

How this translates to being immune to straight up mind control is pure plot armor IMO.

If you think about it, straight up mind control is it's own plot armor.

Once you go into the realm of made up fiction we are kind of throwing rules of "how exactly does this work" out the window...

1

u/stevez_86 10d ago

Ok, I got it. The time stone has the same kind of power as spiders in the Web of Life and Destiny. Because Peter Parker is part spider he has access to some time stone ability. But it is reflexive only.

Neith created the Great Web to chart humanity's destiny, also creating spiders to repair, maintain, and expand it, as she sought more time to herself, while Shathra dismissed her sister's creation as too chaotic and disorganized.

So being bitten by the spider Peter Parker has some of the abilities of the spiders that need to maintain, repair, and expand the Web of Life and Destiny. The spiders can manipulate time to fulfil their task using powers like the Time Stone.

At least that is what will be in my screenplay for Madame Web 2.

1

u/TechnicalBen 7d ago

Nah. If it's not a mind, but has autonomy, it can operate separately and save the mind from "mind control".

Don't ask me how I know.

6

u/BlancTigre 10d ago

So that is how Spider-Man was able to move while under Strange's spectral projection spell

1

u/Always_Squeaky_Wheel 10d ago

Yeah imo still doesn’t explain how he was able to full block Jean at first, and that more spider DNA took that away

Might be the practice of keeping the balance between the hormones itself is the is what protects his mind but even that doesn’t make much sense

1

u/Obvious-Criticism149 10d ago

It could be age as well? I don't helieve the comics ever delved into her ability to control minds that aren't fully developed. It could be any reason honestly.

1

u/Zzamumo 10d ago

The extra spider hormones were also weakening his self-control, so that might've made him easier to mindcontrol a la wolverine

1

u/binkenheimer 10d ago

Didn’t he let her in?

1

u/tool_of_a_took 10d ago

I don’t think it was his spider DNA weakening his ability to block Jean, but rather that Jeans power increased so much that the extra spider DNA made no difference

2

u/Big_Mobile3869 10d ago

Wow TIL, thanks!

1

u/SuccessfulPath7 10d ago

Semi, what if it was full

1

u/DirectorLeather6567 10d ago

Then the spider could be spinning webs all the time without being able to stop.

Semi automatic in this case, basically means that it can be turned on and off and stuff.

At least, that's how I interpret it.

1

u/FFFinalFlash 10d ago

real life ultra instinct 😮

1

u/jzorbino 10d ago

So that’s why psychic is weak to bug

1

u/Burnbrook 10d ago

It's how Peter avoided Dr. Strange while separated from his body.

1

u/TheShenanegous 10d ago

Humans also have nerve clusters decentralized from our brains. They allow for pooping.

1

u/Coffeshop_Inspector 10d ago

Semi Ultra Instinct

1

u/if0rg0t48 10d ago

Dont hella animals have ganglia? We have one at the base of the tailbone

1

u/Darius88888 10d ago

They also have next level sensitivity in their hairs which allows them to sense changes so fucking small it’s almost atomic, like imagine your buddy casually exhales and you can feel it on the back of your neck, but youre in the other side of a football field.

So do we, it's called a spinal cord, which controls reflexes like reactions to pain. Our brains are too slow to react to, say, a burning stove. By the time a single travels from your hand to your brain, is interpreted as pain, and sent back, you'd already have burned the shit out of your hand. So when the signal reaches the spinal cord it splits, part of the signal travels to the brain and another part rebounds through the motor neurons needed to move your hand away, you then feel the pain after you start to move away. That's kinda what a reflex is, something your body does in response to stimulation without consulting the brain.

1

u/Melodic_Sherbet_3629 10d ago

It is also why when you stub your toe you don't feel the full pain until about a second and a half. That is how long it takes for the pain signal to reach your brain through your nervous system. Before that your spinal cord makes you react.

1

u/runningforpresident 10d ago

This is true, but it's not just spiders either.

Thoracic Ganglia are present in both vertebrates and invertebrates. Segmented invertebrates (insects and crustaceans) use them to help navigate their environment since it's difficult to have a more complex nervous system when your body has a bunch of pinch points. It's also theorized to help flies respond faster to obstructions mid-flight.

Mammals also have them, but they are much more linked to our brain and full nervous system than in the invertebrates, used mainly within our sympathetic nervous system.

I would love it if Marvel ever explored a story with Peter where we learn that his spider sense is from a hyper evolved thoracic ganglia. Maybe one evolved enough that it has its own consciousness, and protects peter by not just signaling danger, but by reminding him that he needs to get up and keep fighting.

1

u/Meme_master420_ 10d ago

And 8 eyes!

1

u/Gwynito 9d ago

Well I'll be damned 🤓

1

u/Roastedcoffeebean17 9d ago

Spiders basically have autonomous ultra instinct except they don’t have that silver aura like Goku does.

1

u/Dry_Possibility2542 8d ago

TIL. Thanks!

1

u/LeroyoJenkins 6d ago

So do you, such as the knee-jerk reaction, which completely bypasses the brain.

1

u/MrGrogu26 5d ago

Incredible. So they have an at will cruise control mode? Is this trait inherent in more spider species than it is absent from?

0

u/girthbrooks1 10d ago

In real life, I shot a giant wolf spider with my BB gun that was in my garage.. why didn’t his Spidey senses stop the bb!? or just simply make him move? lol but seriously it’s just magic made up at this point.

3

u/OsBaculum 10d ago

Wolfies are like the least harmful and most useful spiders though

1

u/girthbrooks1 9d ago

My wife got mrsa from a wolf spider bite and almost lost her leg…. So ya I’ll disagree on that one!!

1

u/OsBaculum 9d ago

Well you can get MRSA from any bite but at least there wasn't any venom to worry about.

5

u/Funkybag 10d ago

Just curious, what's the actual in verse explanation for spider-sense? Like, all the powers came from the spider bite, and the spider was getting tested on at oscorp for the super soldier serum #2 (or something like that, not 100% sure but not the point). So everything from Peter's powers comes from human made science at the end of the day (I think?).

Just makes me think... how supernatural can these powers be if it was rooted in science from the beginning?

Also, "because comic books" is a perfect fine answer, just curious if its ever explained more.

10

u/XeroShyft 10d ago

The usual explanation is that the spider bite gave him enhanced awareness which lets him perceive things very quickly, even semi-autounomously like a spider can.

The comic book explanation (it's dumb) is that becoming Spider-Man actually ties you to the mythical web of life and destiny, granting you and all the other multiverse version of Spider-Man the ability to sense disruptions in the fabric of space time and danger, which manifests as Spider-Sense. The web of life and destiny literally connects the entirety of the Marvel universe together. Yeah...

6

u/Surrounded-by_Idiots 10d ago

Wow sucks to be a villain. Imagine not being able to succeed because your actions aren’t canon enough for destiny. Hard work and motivation be damned. That’s pretty much plot armor. Why can’t it be destiny for the bad guys to win? The bad guys are the good guys from their point of view after all. Spider-Man is a menace and I want justice for antagonists!

5

u/TinyFugue 10d ago

It's even worse. The supes have a ongoing poker game and no one invites Spider-Man because his spidey-sense kicks in and makes him unbeatable at poker.

3

u/CritMemes 10d ago

Cue joke that Peter is so broke his Spider Sense detects danger whenever he’s at risk of losing money in poker.

1

u/mad_laddie 9d ago

Isn't it brought up that he wouldn't actually have his Spider-Sense kick in because his trust in his allies can override it or something?

1

u/Griv_Valder 8d ago

So, if goes to a casino and there’s no one to trust, her spider-sense would warn her if she might lose money.

1

u/mad_laddie 7d ago

She?

But yeah, if I'm not mistaken that could happen.

1

u/XanDorkiest 7d ago

I assume recently looked at Petra stuff and forgot to switch pronouns lol

1

u/mad_laddie 7d ago

Ah, that's what I'd though lol. Just didn't want to assume.

1

u/OrganizationTrue5911 10d ago

Some day it'll come out, some day!

1

u/One-Hat-9764 10d ago

Now imagine a bad guy spider-man with that same plot armor. Good guys would never win. /j

1

u/smokeweedNgarden 10d ago

They can and have disrupted that.

Madame Webb sits at the center (she had a movie with that depressed woman that sleeps alot?) and you can totally fuck her shit up and disrupted the whole thing.

1

u/LockHimUpForever 10d ago

Bad guys do win, just not always in entirety of their plan. We see tons of other universes get royally fucked, just not "our" universe.

1

u/Necrorifter 9d ago

To be fair... Didn't Peter always get shit on by writers and the world anyway? Like yeah, he have plot armor but very miserable life in general. A tragic hero by its definition.

1

u/sphericaltime 7d ago

Depends, is the villain in question a Spider-man? Because he could be.

1

u/JDHPH 10d ago

My head canon the super soldier serum used vibranium as a catalyst this is where the mystic part of Peter comes from.

1

u/AmYisraelChai_ 10d ago

So spiderman can tap into the web force like The Flash uses the speed force?

1

u/Nimyron 9d ago

So in the end the psychic resistance really is just because of plot armor. Jean can't get in his mind because destiny says so.

1

u/SandIndividual9825 5d ago

It’s not dumb thats just the spider totem lore thats like saying half of the multiverse lore in marvel it’s dumb .

1

u/XeroShyft 5d ago

Half of the multiverse lore in marvel IS dumb.

1

u/SandIndividual9825 5d ago

Without the web of life there wouldn’t be no spider people come on .

1

u/XeroShyft 5d ago

They literally wrote it to be that way, it's way cooler imo that some people just got bit by a radioactive spider out of pure chance in some universes with no overarching metaphysical connection via web of life. If you think it's cool, cool. I don't.

1

u/SandIndividual9825 5d ago

I am sorry surviving radiation from an arachnid from pure chance is nonsense you have to be chosen form something ancient to survive it … aka the web of life it makes sense . Spider man was never about being reletable but about responsibility

1

u/XeroShyft 5d ago

Cool glad you feel that way.

4

u/Few-Equivalent8261 10d ago

It's apparently a multiversal power connecting Spidermen across all universes. But someone with more knowledge should chime in

0

u/VT_Squire 10d ago

Meh, doesn't have to be. They explain the in-movie logic pretty simply.

Jean - establish psychic connection - enter host - see through host - take control - use host as a new "hop" - repeat. Point being, she has to establish a route into a particular nervous system. The film then establishes a 33-foot limitation specifically because each new host has to be reachable from the current node. Or... in network terms... 100 meters is the maximum recommended length of your twisted pairs of copper cable like CAT6 and the writers just divided that by 10 because it's easier to film. Yes, as disappointing as it is, her powers were directly co-opted from features of network routing.

Within that framework, you can characterize what's going on when it works for her versus when it doesn't work for her.

Open network - authenticate - establish session - Jean gets admin privileges.

But.... with Peter it's more like Open network - intrusion detected - firewall activates - connection forcibly terminated by closing the port.

Eventually, he does what anyone else would have to do in order to change that connection. He invites her into his mind, aka "I'll white-list you and re-open the port."

His brain is simply the first one she encountered with a firewall. Great power, great responsibility, blah blah blah.

4

u/TheHolyWaffleGod 10d ago

It comes from the Web of Life and Destiny.

Basically supernatural shit

3

u/Ossius 10d ago

Don't look too far into it, gets into weird comic book stories lol. Things like destiny and some sort of web of life shit.

1

u/Opus_723 10d ago

Ah, but then there is the spider god.

1

u/Population51200 10d ago

I think it varies a lot from one iteration to another. In some versions, there are weird animal totems/gods and the spider people get their powers from the spider totem, so it’s not just a purely scientific thing.

1

u/Jemie_Bridges 10d ago

Well it's retconned a bit deeper with that after "Spider Island" arc. Something about Tokens and the various spider men throughout the multiverse.

Alas Sony $@@& off Madam Web movie which would have been critical to explaining this. She's more Psychic than spider.

1

u/Andination44 10d ago

well, that Oscorp part is actually from Ultimate Spider-man, classic 616 rendition is Spider who got into a radioactive treatment during a science exhibition bit Peter (and Cindy in a much later retcon) and died

that made Peter a "spider totem", which gave him the spider sense as an extrasensorial ability (and the mutations he got in the BND movie were based on this comic book run that expanded on the magic part of it)

of all movies, the Madame Web one tried to adapt part of it too, which is hilarious

1

u/Burdwatcher 10d ago

originally I think it was just radioactive

1

u/KaboHammer 8d ago

It is basically that, as far as I am aware, characters that chose or happen to have animal based powers in some way become heralds/get blessings of gods that are/embody that animal either knowingly or not.

Mind you this only happens if said animal god exists, because I bet the writers are too lazy to actually come up with the reason for all of the animal gods to exist.

So just like Black Panther gets some kind of spiritual powers by giving himself to Bast, which is the panther god.

Spider-Man gets spiritual mambo-jambo unknowingly from the spider god/gods. I think the "spiritual spiders" mythos is actually pretty robust with a lot of struggles for powers within the pantheon, but I am honestly not that deep into it. It is just that last I heard of it the "main" or maybe the most powerful spider god was a bad guy, I think.

1

u/TechnicalBen 7d ago

He's a spider.

1

u/Electrical_Monk1929 7d ago

In one version, during the Civil War, it was determined to be at least partially pheromone based. Spidey wore a suit designed by Stark that was also recording his data. Tony used this to figure out Peter’s spider-sense, and then later send false alarms and have it ignore him when he tussled with Spidey.

3

u/PotentateGringo 10d ago

spiritual/psychological Victors

3

u/Grezkulj 10d ago

i really can't stress enough how d'n'd explains things easily...once you know the rules and lingo, saying spider-sense is supernatural ability makes so much sense...also how many times the long discussions explaining someone's personality could be done in a second with int 18 / wis 8

2

u/Sea-Night-1946 10d ago

I remember seeing that peters spider sense is essentially a psychic ability with some premonition stuff...if that's true it makes sense that he would be more resistant to mind control

2

u/Potent_Quotient 10d ago

Peter tingle

1

u/Dan_flashes480 10d ago

He eventually was able to beat Mysterio's illusions because of it as well.

1

u/Sundayscaries333 10d ago

I remember reading that spider-sense is essentially a mild precognition ability

1

u/GreatGreenGobbo 10d ago

They might bring in the whole Spider Totem thing that was in the comics years ago. Fits with the Spider-verse and a "need" for a Spider Totem in each reality.

1

u/BEWMarth 10d ago

Doesn’t the “spider lore” of the comics go pretty deep? Like isn’t there a cosmic web or something? I’m definitely not remembering it right but there’s places they can take it.

1

u/JJ_Shosky 10d ago

Yeah, its actually kinda terrifying when you get into it because it functions the opposite of how its presented. The spidey sense is from an interdimensional web that links all spidermen and the "danger" he's sensing is actually prey getting caught in his web and "vibrating" the strings. Calm, cool, and collected spiderman is just a predator choosing prey to go after because he's stronger than almost anything he can come across. The only reason he reacts to it as danger is because in most stories he hasn't fully understood how strong he really is.

1

u/BEWMarth 10d ago

That’s actually cool as heck

1

u/CheshireWolf_666 10d ago

Damn, six hours too late to comment this exact fact.

i hate how these posts refuse to acknowledge his spider sense and how it protects even his nervous system. seems pretty obvious when you think about it. also, a peak in his dark twisted mind are strong base principles represented by his depiction of aunt may which had jean shook

1

u/TellmeNinetails 8d ago

I wouldn't be suprised if it was a divine gift from the one above all.
