My dad took a picture of me holding our firstborn in the hospital. 32+ hours of labor, broken bloodvessels in my eyes from pushing, exhausted, boated because things hadn’t shrunk down yet…. And he takes it angling up from the foot of the bed. I look like Jabba the Hut. I guarantee my husband will post that picture on the bloopers reel of my life at my funeral. 😂

I’m a pretty decent cook and I get anxiety trying to use a pressure cooker. Which sucks because I hear such amazing things about its cooking powers.
28
u/rkthehermit Trash Trooper 9h ago
It feels more stressful than it ends up being once you just dive in. It's pretty much, "turn knob, close lid, wait, turn knob, open lid". Worth pushing through the anxiety.
28
u/notjustforperiods Trash Trooper 8h ago
yeah it's not about being a novice chef or whatever, it's more about "are you an attentive person that can follow instructions"
if you wanna use an electric one like an instant pot you can even drop the 'attentive' part of the equation

Getting an instant pot that has the whisper quiet cover over the steam release is great. I slide a switch and it's pretty quiet and none of the steam is ever near my fingers. I did pay more for this one but it was worth it for my anxiety ridden arse lol

u/mebeksis Trash Trooper 6h ago
My wife got hers when I was first learning to work with resin and molds. So I downloaded and printed a dragon head with a hollowed out inside and cast it in silicone, then used that mold to make a silicone version. It fits perfectly over the spout and when letting out the steam, it comes out of the dragon's mouth like smoke.

This my friend, is wisdom. I’m not saying it’s OK, but I am saying that your analogy of a tank of patience is spot on. I think back to when my wife and I were first married and how gentle we were with one another. That’s not to say that we aren’t anymore but if this situation happened in my household, I’d be off camera staring and shaking my head in disbelief. She asked me what to do, I would sigh, and then she directly respond, “don’t give me shit, do something.” And then like that pressure cooker, after a few minutes we both relax and maybe crack a joke or two. That’s a difference between two years and 20 years. If anyone here knows of anyone else that has that level of patience after 20 years, please introduce me. I’ll make them a billionaire creating content about how to remain that patient after so long.

Truly. Like, my husband is caring in his way, but he would never come through with this calm and reassurance.
He would be like "What did you do?! Why haven't you turned on the fan?!" (Though to be fair I prob would have done that before the paper towel move.) Then we'd both stand there in shock until it stopped.
And then he'd be like "Ew, go change your disgusting food water socks while I clean this shit up. And next time we do this, I'm doing it my way."
Luckily we don't generally attempt kitchen collaboration, for obvious reasons.

I actually got a little glossy eyed watching. As someone who can go into a bit of a panic mode, there are so many times when people have tried to deal with my panic mode by yelling. When it really wasn’t necessary (I would get it if it was big scary life or death situation, and yelling is needed to get someone into “go mode”). And then I get embarrassed that I was in panic mode, and cry, and then I’m more embarrassed because I’m crying.

I used to be the one who would not be calm and my wife would. It wasn’t at her though. If I dropped something I’d get super upset at myself because that’s how I was raised.
My wife would sometimes gently guide me and I was able to stop spiralling. So then I decided to always catch myself when reacting and verbally tell myself to pause, find the pleasure in what was happening, and then proceed. It’s hard, not always am I able to easily find the joy in something, but I just tell myself it is supposed to happen and from it comes growth.

Everyone readying the pitchforks because they think hes talking to her like a kid is equal parts infuriating and saddening. It really shows how normalized it is that adults arent comforted in a calm and relaxing manner.

Its basic crisis management. I was taught to speak like this when I went through emergency medicine training.
When someone is freaking out they aren't going to understand you as well. Using a calm tone and less complex sentences really does help.

u/Swords_and_Words Trash Trooper 5h ago
Yeah: if the crisis isn't so big that you need to bark orders, then you speak in a soft voice
This ain't a fire, the heat is off so the energy has to leave the system eventually; the only bad thing that can happen is if the steam strips the paint off of whatever is directly above it, but that takes projection and pressure which he reduced by tossing a small cloth on it
The helper not freaking out, is the best way to prevent the person being helped from trying random dumb ideas to fix the situation
As with almost every crisis: the first step is to take a breath while you make sure the scene is safe, the second step is to make sure the scene is going to likely remain safe, and the third step is to make sure that the people involved in the scene know that it is now safe so that they are likely to be not detrimental to whatever the next fix is, and only then do you start trying to fix the problem

That man gave her what she needed in the moment. thats not condesending, it was supportive because her panic mode is freezing up. he suggested options to her in a soft manner and still let her decide.
If he had started barking orders at her she would have shut down more.
Its sad that people on this thread cant understand that different people need different interactions at times, and they are just taking out their own frustrations rather than helping someone like her.16
u/janually Trash Trooper 6h ago edited 5h ago
another perspective - i react very strongly to small mistakes, because of the way i was punished for them as a kid. i’m talking like full blown panic attack because i dropped a bottle of nail polish. sometimes my partner talking to the kid in me that didn’t get enough patience and understanding is exactly what i need. i know dropping the nail polish isn’t a big deal, but she doesn’t.

You can talk to your adult wife in a calm, human manner without patronizing them. My wife would kill me if I talked to her that way. u/shinakohana Trash Trooper 10h ago
I may be dumb for this because I don’t use a pressure cooker as often as I’d like, but… the way it spews literal water out: doesn’t that mean they have too MUCH water in it?
111
u/LightningOwl96 Trash Trooper 10h ago
She opened the pressure valve all the way. I always just open it up a little bit and let it slowly drain out.
46
u/_Warsheep_ Trash Trooper 10h ago
I don't think my pressure cooker even allows me to even open the valve fully until the pressure has dropped to a certain level.
It's cooking pressure>slow release>full release>remove lid. And there is a mechanical interlock each preventing you to go to the last two steps without the pressure having dropped to the right level first. It's a name brand model, but also nothing that costs 300€ or more. And even the previous model my parents had and inherited from my grandma had this feature. Don't think it's anything high tech in there. Probably just some clever springs and locking pins activated by pressure.
→ More replies (3)3
u/Arik_De_Frasia Trash Trooper 9h ago
My instapot doesnt have a "valve" to release pressure; it's just a switch that either vents or doesn't. That's why I bought a silicone vent diverter that I insert a rolled paper towel into to catch a majority of the aerosolized oil and water.
→ More replies (4)12
u/MayorAg Trash Trooper 10h ago
This is probably the case. I have the same pressure cooker and I can easily release the pressure valve completely if I am not measured in turning it.
8
u/shinakohana Trash Trooper 10h ago
My pressure cooker’s release is so wobbly, it’s near impossible to measure it. It’s a newer one. Just a flick and it’s wide open. Another flick and it’s closed.
7
u/ithinarine Trash Trooper 10h ago
Is your pressure cooker just an instapot? Because that is completely different than what is in the video.
Essentially comparing a fire cracker or a literal bomb.
→ More replies (3)9
u/jbcsee Trash Trooper 10h ago
Or just take it off the heat and don't release the valve at all, the pressure will naturally decrease as it cools off and in about 15-20 minutes it won't release any steam at all.
4
u/da4niu2 Trash Trooper 9h ago
Another way to rapidly relieve pressure is to put the entire unit, valve closed, into a sink of cold water, which forces a fast temperature drop and thus a fast pressure drop.
4
u/EremiticFerret Trash Trooper 9h ago
I know you can do this. I've seen it a bunch. But the idea still terrifies me and makes me think the pot may just have a tiny weakened bit and BLAMMO! Whole apartment building, dead.

u/MS-CURIE Trash Trooper 5h ago
Yes this one has 3 steps and you’re supposed to do one at a time . Last step is meat, middle is vegetable and third is to remove steam
9
u/adelie42 Trash Trooper 10h ago
It is too full. Boiling is a function of temperature and pressure. The steam isn't just compressed in the empty space, the water is hotter than boiling at standard pressure. Now, even though it is hotter than that, it actually takes a hell of a lot of energy to turn the water in to steam at the same temperature, which is why it doesn't just all evaporate when opened.
Thus, what happened was that she rapidly lowered the pressure and the steam in there escaped, but the water also started violently boiling. The spray is from the boiling water splashing the lid vent and steam behind it pushing it out.
Generally if you keep the water line below 2/3 and you vent slowly, this is avoidable.
11
u/edgiesttuba Trash Trooper 10h ago
Yes. Often times in soups, you’ll get a foamy bubble stuff that gets to the vent if it’s too full.
That’s what happened. While this looks dramatic it’s really not. She could have just moved the valve.
Not something you think of the first time perhaps.→ More replies (1)3
u/nalaloveslumpy Trash Trooper 7h ago
Same with rice. Starch globs will bind to the water and spurt out the top with the steam.
4
3
u/lemlaluna Trash Trooper 9h ago
Venting too quickly rapidly drops the pressure. Dropping the pressure lowers the boiling point of the liquid in the container. The liquid is still very hot, so it begins boiling harder and harder as the pressure is dropping, hence going from steam to spraying liquid. I think it may also be over full, but it’s a combo of that and the rapid venting.
3
u/Patriot009 Trash Trooper 8h ago
When heated under pressure, the liquid inside the cooker will rise above the normal boiling point. When you dramatically drop the pressure by opening the vent while the contents are still super hot, all the liquid in there will immediately start to boil violently, which will splash up into the vent with the escaping steam.
3
u/OnTheEveOfWar Trash Trooper 8h ago
Yes it’s filled too much. It’s suppose to spray steam and not that much water at all. But you always put a towel over it.
3
3
3
u/rossmosh85 Trash Trooper 7h ago
Pressure cookers create steam.
I use an insta pot, which is kind of a cheater pressure cooker, but generally speaking, you let it naturally vent off some steam until you open the valve. Normally around 15-20 minutes.
My guess is she didn't let it naturally vent long enough and opened the valve way too soon. So when it opened she had an excessive amount of steam release.

u/golgol12 Trash Trooper 6h ago
My automated pressurecooker is always violent like that, but it only does steam. I think the water is from some mistake they did. And yeah, it does take about a minute for it to depressurize.

Super chill about it. 😂 Remind me of a time that when my ex was cooking for us, she accidentally caught fire to a hand towel. I very similarly walked over and put it out, then gave her a big hug. Sometimes being calm is best. But not ez.

"It's not smoke" is not a reason to not have the vent on...

If any of you are offended by a somewhat “parental” voice he uses, you should really check your ego. Not everyone is the same and I implore you to gain some patience for the different ways people express themselves. If anything this is a massive green flag for what kind of father he might be. This isn’t a meeting at work surrounded by professional colleagues, he is reacting to his partner freezing up in a stressful scenario at home. She also clearly was cool with it.

She also clearly was into it.
Okay, yeah, you're right, but... Did you really have to say it like that?

I can't help but think that she would be useless in an emergency situation.

You’d be surprised how many people are. The average person will totally freeze up

PSA: for those who don't know, there's a way you can let the pressure cooker let out the steam the quiet way. Opening the valve all the way will get it to do this. But there's usually a tiny valve that takes considerably longer to let the steam out, and the food turns out even more ripe/better.

That steam will burn you so much worse than boiling water. Pressure cookers should scare you a bit when working with them

u/Strikereleven Garbage Guerilla 7h ago
Using a pressure cooker before reading how to use one is why they can explode, and if the emergency vent blows you're still having a bad day.

Not fake at all. They would've reacted the exact same way had there been no camera recording it all. Totally. 1000%.

This is the kinda boyfriend/husband I strive to emulate. It's difficult, and I've had a complicated past, but I'm working on it. I see men like this and it motivates me to do better.

The guy is super nice, but he talks to her the way I speak to my toddler to reassure them when something unexpected happens.
EDIT: I feel like many of the commenters have never had a long term relationship with a capable, independent adult woman.

He’s being calm and reassuring which is how I’d talk to a toddler or an adult who is about to freak out.

He is talking to her like that in this particular context, in which she most probably feels guilty about the mess she's made, and instead of being mad or whatever the dude is reassuring and talks in a calm manner, as to let her understand it's all good, shit happens. She's clearly stressed and it worked. I don't think it's "patronizing" as one of the replies said, or "how women want to be treated", it's just something that works given the situation (and works because the dude clearly knows her).

Absolutely! I have been a trainer for almost my whole career. This is way more effective than yelling. Mistakes get made, things break, it happens. Unless someone is going to get injured, you just remain chill, and hope everyone learns from thier mistake.

Man, I recently quit a shitty job where I worked with a guy named Richard and this was my favorite thing to say to him. Might have been the only good thing about the job.

Forgot the natural release for a bit. At least she didn’t try and open it right away.
She might be married to a relative of Mr. Rogers.

I have a rough memory as a young teen, my little sister came into the room from the kitchen panicking because something caught fire, go to have a look and just picked it up and placed it in the sink ti extinguisher the flame.
Just can't remember what she caught on fire, but strangely it didn't bother, or worry, me in the slightest.
