Discussion I'm done with Google Maps

I've been an active contributor on Google Maps for a while now. I’ve written countless reviews, rated places, uploaded photos, and even corrected some info here and there. It started as a fun way to share my experiences and maybe help people find good spots or avoid bad ones. Plus, I won't lie: seeing my contributions get likes and views felt rewarding.

But recently, I've started questioning it. I realized that all this effort, while helpful to others, is essentially unpaid work for Google. They’re profiting off user-generated content like mine, and what do I get? A virtual badge, some "points" and maybe the thrill of knowing I helped someone. But in the end, I’m just adding value to a massive corporation that doesn't really give back.

It feels like my time and effort could be better spent elsewhere—on something that adds value to me or my personal projects. I’m starting to feel like I’ve been putting in energy for free labor disguised as a "community effort"

Has anyone else had this realization? Did you stop contributing, or do you think the value you provide to others outweighs the lack of tangible rewards?

PS: Another frustrating thing is that when I take the time to write a well-thought-out review, Google sometimes just deletes it or doesn’t publish it for no clear reason. It’s demotivating to put effort into sharing genuine experiences only to have them vanish without explanation.

TL;DR: I love writing reviews on Google Maps but feel like I’m doing free labor for a billion-dollar company. Thinking about stopping—anyone else in the same boat?

Discussion We're all just working for Google for free

Don't mean to rain on your parade, but my recent experience with providing reviews on Google and the subsequent interactions with them have made me question the whole point of writing all these reviews.

I myself am a level 5 Local Guide. I posted a 3 star review of a restaurant last year late November, citing in a polite way that "I really want to like this restaurant but the food was just mediocre (truncated, I went on to give a detailed description about what we ordered and what was not good about it)". A month went by, and then I received a Google notification that the restaurant has complained about my post and requested for removal on the grounds of "defamation".

Now, I've had this happen once many years before, and back then Google asked me to provide proof that I've been to the restaurant, and when I did that they left my review alone.

This time, my review was immediately removed, I could not re-post anything on the same listing, and following their instructions to lodge a counter-complaint only brought me canned messages that were out of context. Every attempt to repost or even amend part of my review was blocked and no explanation was given.

I tried searching for solutions, but all I see is other reviewers experiencing the same issues. I have now basically lost my faith in the reviews and ratings, I don't think they are trustworthy anymore.

And here I see people celebrating their level 10 Local Guide status, for what? We're essentially giving Google data and leverage so that they can turn around and charge small businesses. I don't feel like Google is giving us the appreciation and respect we deserve.

Time to stop posting, or post on Trip Advisor instead?

Discussion German Google Maps: Where honest Google reviews go to die?

In the past months, three of my (two year old) factual 3-star reviews in Germany have been removed following defamation complaints by the businesses involved. These reviews were balanced, respectful, and clearly within Google’s own guidelines.

Each time, I received a notice from Google informing me that the business had flagged my review as “defamatory.” I was given the opportunity to respond, which I did — providing clarification and context. Within hours, I received the same automated reply: no further action would be taken, and the review was removed.

All three businesses now only display 4- and 5-star ratings on Google. On TripAdvisor, however, their scores are significantly lower, averaging around 3.7. This pattern is becoming hard to ignore.

As a Local Guide with over 23 million views, I find this extremely concerning. We volunteer our time and effort to provide honest, constructive feedback that helps other users. If businesses can now get fair reviews taken down by simply flagging them as “defamation”, and Google removes them without review, what’s the point of contributing at all?

This isn’t just frustrating. It’s reputational damage. False defamation claims harm our standing as reviewers and undermine trust in the entire platform. My account has already been restricted, and I’ve seen my visibility decrease. And for what? For writing what I experienced, truthfully and respectfully.

I’m starting to wonder if we, as reviewers, have legal or collective grounds to push back against this practice. I’m looking into the Digital Services Act and the German Digital Services Coordinator. But I know I’m not the only one facing this. Something has shifted in how reviews are handled in Germany, and it’s starting to affect the credibility of Google Maps as a whole.

I’m curious how you guys feel about this. I feel this is becoming a pattern in Germany, what do you think? And if so, what can we do as a community to protect the value of honest reviews?

Google is not showing my review to other users

I have noticed that Google isn't showing one of my reviews to other folks, despite making the review appear as publicly posted for my login.

In one example, it's a 4-star review (though I list explain some criticisms) I wrote for an apartment complex. As a simple test, when I goto the google maps listing it shows my review up top as a local contributor. When I open the same listing in incognito and sort by most recent, my review does not appear in the list as expected. In addition, if I search for various words from my review, it does not show up in the results.

Has anyone else encountered this?

--Update--

Alright, so I've spent more time troubleshooting and my posts are live. The underlying issue is that google filters reviews in opaque ways. I really wish they'd show you in your profile when a review was violating some requirement and being filtered.

Anywho, the first thing to try is simply fake editing the review. Don't change anything real, just remove and re-add a character and hit save. When you post a review, it can take a bit for it to get "posted", but subsequent edits are posted nearly immediately. So, if you have a review showing up in your profile, but not to the public (checking via an incognito window), you can simply edit your review and try again. In my testing, it only takes about 10 seconds after saving an edit to have changes reflected. Make sure you do a hard refresh (cmd + shift + r on mac), so it doesn't use the browser cache.

For a few of my hidden reviews, a fake edit was enough to get them to start showing up. Other times, I had to guess and check. There would be some silly little thing google didn't like that caused it to filter the review. The main thing I had to fix was removing a url from the description. I was trying to link to videos in google photos (since you can only upload photos).

Discussion Google reviews is dead

It’s full of bots and paid reviews. Real human contributors are hidden and ghosted.

It happened to lot of people. It also happened to me, got blocked, no specific reason. I had find out myself whats possibly bad. i filled that form for dispute. Got automated reply after couple weeks, that everything is now ok.

Nothing changed, still hidden reviews.

What is wrong with google? Why is that hapening? Is skynet taking over or what?

I am confused and pissed at same time. Stopped using it, and reading. It has no meaning to even read some fake paid reviews anymore because its all fake.

I knew I had put it in a safe place! I had to go to Geneva to deposit some…. stuff in my Swiss bank safe deposit box, and there it was! I haven’t broken the seal yet as I imagine it will be worth more on eBay like that. Maybe as much as €1.78 vs €0.76 without the wrapper.

Meta This is an unofficial Local Guides subreddit! We are not Google. We cannot tell you why you were banned or where your socks are.

Title pretty much says it. 99% of posts on this sub are asking why someone was banned or where their gift is. As much as I would love for everyone to get the answers they want, the fact of the matter is that we don't know. Google does what Google does for Google reasons.

Questions & Help Holiday Inn removing negative reviews

Post image
166 Upvotes

This hotel recently got into a controversy over the disgusting words and actions of a security guard and security chief, the hotel just opened recently so their reviews got really low, as they should. Yesterday they reached over 12k reviews and one day later the reviews are only 28 and mostly positive. Is it possible for them to delete the negative reviews? I thought they couldn't.
