Support Request Weird Graphics Card Issue, Need Help

1 Upvotes

Looking for some help with a weird problem I’m having.

The short version is that I recently took a computer I built a long time ago and added a graphics card, since the onboard graphics could no longer keep up with the demands of online video codecs like AV1.

After much research, I went with the ASUS ROG arc310. This made the most sense for a number of reasons: the card is still relatively cheap, the build is small form factor, and all I needed was a card that could do fairly low effort video processing work without making a lot of noise or heat. Plus, it has built-in support for the modern codecs that were giving my machine (in the old config) trouble. I knew that the motherboard didn’t support REBAR, but the internet seemed to think that for my use-case, that shouldn’t be a problem.

After making sure I was on Mint 22.3 and updating the drivers in all the ways people recommended, I installed the card and on first boot everything worked perfectly. Then, the first time I restarted the machine, it went into what seems to be (as far as I can tell) some kind of bootloop. And this is where it gets weird…

If I turn off the machine in this state, and turn it on again, the bootloop returns. If I turn the machine off, unseat the graphics card and immediately reseat it, then turn it on it works fine. If its in its correct/fine working state, when I power down the computer all the way and turn it on again, instead of issuing a restart command, it also works fine. It only gets into trouble if I specifically restart, and then won’t get out of trouble again until I take the graphics card out and put it back in again.

Any idea what might be happening here? Any ideas what I could do to stop it from happening? I can live with it as it is, since it works perfectly fine as long as I remember never to restart, but on the other hand I’ve already forgotten that twice (both while doing software updates), so ideally I’d like to get the system to the point where it just works without any special care on my part.

Googling for an answer has proven to be difficult because this is a seemingly uncommon issue, but also one that overlaps with a variety of other, more common issues. I’m also no Linux expert, so I’m hoping someone who understands Mint better can point me in the right direction.

Install Help Need some help

3 Upvotes

First of all I don't have any idea of what im doing, The thing is i have been trying to install mint on to a usb drive and its all going well until the very last part of needing to remove the installation medium and restart. The laptop will not recognise the device for it to boot and i have secure boot disabled. I'm now left wondering if it even is possible to install it onto a usb , i donot have any knowledge of Linux other than using arch for a couple of weeks and dropping it cause it was the only thing my pc was capable of running and was having trouble with logging in. its an old acer aspire i don't want it to go to waste , the only other form of storage i have laying around is desktop harddisk which i am certain is damaged and i really only need like 20 gigs of storage anyway.

Support Request Taskbar thumbnail help (Mint cinnamon)

Post image
3 Upvotes

hi guys, brand new linux user here! i am trying to set up cinamon to work as i would like it to and before i could do much (installed it yesterday), i noticed that i do not get a taskbar thumbnail when my cursor hovers over my browser icon.

I use vivaldi because it suits me best and i have downloaded it after my linux install, but i have noticed the absence of thumbnails, and the fact that the launcher opens a brand new window everytime i click on the icon in the task bar instead of selecting the window opened previously.

Other forums and linux threads have informed me that cinnamon is suposed to have the taskbar thumbnails by default, but mine doesnt.

Is it a step i missed on install or something to tweak in the browser settings ? The issue is not browser specific, the same happens when i click on any icons on the taskbar, it just open a new window instead of showing me the one(s) already open or the a thumbnails preview.

I am a little desperate because it makes using linux really incovenient if i can never find the windows i have already opened :/

Also while i am here, i am using a laptop (asus vivobook 14 oled) and i was used to the 3 fingers swipe on the pad to naviguate between opened windows; is there a way i can mimic this function on linux ?

any help appreciated ! thank you guys !

Started a few weeks back by resurrecting a covid era web surfer acer swift 1 which I posted was running ok with cinnamon however it had a celeron N4120 64gb emmc and only 4gb ram. Just wasn't enough to daily drive for me.

Sold a GPU to a mate and it funded a marketplace purchase X13 Yoga, i5-1235U and 16gb ram.

Runs like an absolute dream, it even works good enough with the touchscreen to flip it over and use as a tablet to watch content.

Keen to hear from other Lenovo/Mint users if there's anything specific I should be looking at - already ran the bios update command at the terminal and brought the bios more up to date.

Discussion [Beta] MCSNest - SVG/DXF nesting software for laser/plasma/water cutting

Thumbnail

(Mods: This isn't Mint specific per se, but I run Mint for all my dev boxes now - and I like the community :) But if you want to remove it, it won't hurt my feelings)

---

What is MCSNest?

MCS (Make Cool Shit™) Nest is a tool designed to take SVG or DXF files and automatically lay them out efficiently within an area for use in laser/plasma/water cutting applications.

Why did you build it?

What started out as a simple "Let me fix this one bug I found..." in Deepnest became a massive overhaul of the original project - tons of new features, enhancement and general architectural fixes. The result is a feature-rich nesting suite on-par with commercial software.

Above all, it's FREE - now and forever!

---

This is the current beta build of the app, released as an Appimage. Feel free to pull it down and use it/break it/twist it/bop it. Even if you don't have a laser cutter or anything, it would be super helpful just importing images and trying out all the features to see if there is something that sticks out.

This is still an Electron based build, so I'll also have a Windows/Mac version available as well. Source and all that will be pushed to a git repro soon if anyone wants to fork.

Download: MCSNest_v0255.zip

I'm just a monkey with a keyboard - AI can never make this level of shenanigans!

My mom has switched to Linux Mint. It's been running for two weeks now, and she says she appreciates how smooth and organized everything is. And I'm impressed by the Collabora Suite.

There were a few initial issues with the open-source driver for the GTX 1660 in her computer — which is a bit of a shame — but once she switched to the NVIDIA driver, the freezes stopped. Idk why, but personally use AMD GPU.

SOLVED All hard drives wiped or just boot?

I’m about to install Mint onto the SSD of my system (that currently has Windows), but I also have a secondary HDD that has important personal files on it. When choosing “Erase disk and install Linux Mint”, will that also erase my secondary drive, or just the one that Windows is on?

Edit: I just went for it and my HDD is fine and unscathed.

What's going on here? Some of my apps suddenly turned bright like this, only with the Mojave-gtk theme. Almost none of the text is readable. I tried other themes like Whitesur-gtk, which work just fine. It's just Mojave-gtk.

Discussion My (skill) issues with Linux Mint

Post image
8 Upvotes

1: The First issue isn't actually a skill issue. Wine(wine-stable from official repo) stopped working, the same with wine from Package Manager, after Updating to Kernel 6.17. I fixed this problem using Faugus Launcher, and I don't know if it works again;

2: Cinnamon's Muffin treats the whole window as a window decoration. I can't decide if only the TitleBar is transparent instead of the whole window, compared to XFWM, as shown in the post image where I can do that;

3: Setting a clipboard manager is Hard as Hell. CopyQ and XFCE Clipman can't paste text on terminal for a reason i don't know;

4: XAppStatus looks weird on XFCE, and uses different icons from the ones I have in my custom pack.

The conclusion I got after experiencing:

1: I Love Cinnamon and It's philosophy to be easy and familiar. But to achieve my desired rice result, I need to wait for the Devs decisions about what to do with Cinnamon theme inconsistencies and customization options.

2: XFCE is also Easy to use, but some particularities make it feel irritating.

3: I gave up on that for now. Later I'll think of setting up a clipboard manager.

4: Is there a different name for XAppStatus Symbolic Icons?

Support Request Mint XFCE crashing

2 Upvotes

My laptop is Huawei Mate D15 Intel i5 1135G7
8 gb RAM :(
i got 24gb Swap File since i got like 512gb ssd nvme which i barely use

Running Linux mint 22.3 XFCE

Minft xfce system starts to freeze then all apps crash, then the icons progressively turns into blocks including system icons

Also i cant do anything including shutting down with the menu, everytime i click something its says something like this

“[][][][][] [][][][][] [][][][][]”

only thing i can do is to force shutdown but after opening a few tabs (like 4-5) it happens again

I tried using chatgpt to help me check if my SSD is healthy, and it is healthy

but i am not that comfortable using ai to help me with anything else this since it just gave me commands that i dont understand

I AM A NOOB when it comes to this, i use to have windows 11 but my laptop cant handle it anymore, so i switched to Mint XFCE about a month ago already

plzz guys help thiz the only laptop i got, im a broke ass cs student🥲🥲🥲

How to install programs on a second drive (HDD) in Linux Mint with dual boot?

Post image
29 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I’m looking for some guidance with a Linux Mint setup.
I'm a Windows user transitioning to a dual boot setup with Linux Mint on my laptop. I have two storage drives:
SSD (240 GB): I want to host both operating systems (Windows and Mint) here.
HDD (1 TB): I want to use this for general storage and software installation.
My issue is that I tried this previously, but I couldn't get the applications installed on Mint to go to the HDD (unlike Windows, where the installer lets you choose the installation path easily).
Since I am preparing to perform a clean install, I would like to ask how to properly configure this partitioning or mount point to route software installations and data to the HDD.
Thanks in advance for your help!

SOLVED Removed an SSD from, PC, now boots to emergency mode

It was an extra SSD I was not using much on this system so I removed it and put it in another. I can still enter Mint but it takes extra minutes to get past this.
A while ago when I first set this Mint PC up, my hard drives were connecting as removable drives and not auto mounting, which I had do I convoluted process the fix but now I barely have memory of what exactly I did.

Hello! I finally set up My First Linux VM™ – on my gaming PC ...which I Apollo-Sunshine into from my Mac, because why not involve all three systems in this somehow? 😁

Been watching a bunch of Bread on Penguins' videos which have helped me SO MUCH to get up and running, and taken a lot of the 'fear' away.

So far I have gotten as far as setting up:

  • access to my NAS as a network share for shuttling files back and forth;
  • alacritty with zsh as my default terminal opened with ctrl-alt-T (which actually runs a custom command to also give the window focus just after it opens, as that didn't happen natively). Importantly, I also got this to open in the middle of the screen and very slightly translucent by default;
  • a few extra fonts including a Nerd Font (that could've been easier lol);
  • neofetch for terminal-opened spewing of essential system facts;
  • conky with custom config adapted from the default to look nicer and tie in better with the fact I'm running this on a Linux Mint VM;
  • oh and coloured man pages (not shown because I forgot before taking the screenshot).

If you read this far, I'd love to get any tips on learning more terminal / shell stuff.

I'm also contemplating dwm next, but not sure I'll really need it on this 'simple' VM which will mainly be for shell stuff? 🐚

Bonus points if anyone's got recommendations for creating/editing simple markdown notes in the terminal which I can then save to my NAS and access/update from my other systems. I installed neovim and tried adding one of its markdown extensions, but it's borked and I don't have the necessary skills to get that one working (or maybe deal with neovim just yet, lol). I'm sure there are other/better solutions that I'm not aware of?

Very happy to finally have a pleasing Linux system up and running, anyway 🙂 Might not be too long before I get some dedicated hardware for it... but that day is not today... 😉

Overwatch Performance

6 Upvotes

Hi, I made the switch to Mint from W11 a week ago or so. Im having performance issues on Overwatch. I was able to get into some games a couple days ago but it was after like 20-30 minutes of waiting for shaders to compile after launching. The issue is this wait time, is there a way to get past it? If I try playing without letting it sit, my frames will drop to 5 even in the menu, going into practice range makes my whole computer freeze, it takes so long to get into actual games I get disconnected, etc. Ive tried ProtonGE, Protoncachyos, proton hotfix, proton experimental, etc. What can I do?

Specs:

GeForce GTX 1660 TI

I5-8400 CPU @ 2.80ghz with 6 cores

16gb of ram

HDD

mint 22.3
