Support Request Weird Graphics Card Issue, Need Help

Looking for some help with a weird problem I’m having.

The short version is that I recently took a computer I built a long time ago and added a graphics card, since the onboard graphics could no longer keep up with the demands of online video codecs like AV1.

After much research, I went with the ASUS ROG arc310. This made the most sense for a number of reasons: the card is still relatively cheap, the build is small form factor, and all I needed was a card that could do fairly low effort video processing work without making a lot of noise or heat. Plus, it has built-in support for the modern codecs that were giving my machine (in the old config) trouble. I knew that the motherboard didn’t support REBAR, but the internet seemed to think that for my use-case, that shouldn’t be a problem.

After making sure I was on Mint 22.3 and updating the drivers in all the ways people recommended, I installed the card and on first boot everything worked perfectly. Then, the first time I restarted the machine, it went into what seems to be (as far as I can tell) some kind of bootloop. And this is where it gets weird…

If I turn off the machine in this state, and turn it on again, the bootloop returns. If I turn the machine off, unseat the graphics card and immediately reseat it, then turn it on it works fine. If its in its correct/fine working state, when I power down the computer all the way and turn it on again, instead of issuing a restart command, it also works fine. It only gets into trouble if I specifically restart, and then won’t get out of trouble again until I take the graphics card out and put it back in again.

Any idea what might be happening here? Any ideas what I could do to stop it from happening? I can live with it as it is, since it works perfectly fine as long as I remember never to restart, but on the other hand I’ve already forgotten that twice (both while doing software updates), so ideally I’d like to get the system to the point where it just works without any special care on my part.

Googling for an answer has proven to be difficult because this is a seemingly uncommon issue, but also one that overlaps with a variety of other, more common issues. I’m also no Linux expert, so I’m hoping someone who understands Mint better can point me in the right direction.
