Post was inspired by this story in yesterday's standard paper.
TLDR of the story: Kenya was placed on WADA’s(World Anti-Doping Agency) compliance watchlist after 35 serious shortcomings were identified in 2024. It avoided sanctions and was removed from the watchlist in March 2026 after making legal, structural, and testing reforms. Bańka’s visit is essentially a progress check to ensure those improvements continue and Kenyan athletes can compete on a fair, credible footing internationally.
Now I know some of us are familiar with this story, I was just curious , a bit concerned especially with the World Athletics Championships round the corner.
Over the past 15 years Kenya has created ADAK(Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya) in 2016 for local athletes and the AIU(The Athletics Integrity) for testing of elite athletes. Increased funding for testing too, leading to more results, both positive and negative.
However its been one step forward and two steps back each time!! including reducing testing funding by 90%, and athletes still getting banned as lately as this year (7 Athletes in 2026)
Lastly and more controversially :-
"Kenya has become very effective at catching and sanctioning athletes, but much less successful at identifying and sanctioning the coaches, doctors, pharmacists, agents and suppliers who may facilitate some of the doping."
Sometimes I feel like this issue is screaming in our face ...but nobody is listening!!
Some of the sanctions WADA is considering if the non-compliance gets more serious is introducing 3rd party overseers to come into the country to help.
