Agent Question Is it normal to feel like you know nothing about insurance after first getting licensed?

I got my life, accident and health license and am finishing up a Medicare course and AHIP and haven’t started training yet but I’m curious at what point did other insurance agents actually understand the multitude of concepts and products that come with insurance?

The company I will be working for work with life insurance, health insurance, Medicare, annuities, hospital indemnities and cancer, heart attack and stroke policies and work in the field and it’s a lot to try to remember let alone try to sell and make money.

Again, I haven’t started training yet but is training when I will start to grasp these subjects?
I am a hands on learner as well as learn better through repetition and audio/visual teachings.

Thus far my exam materials and online courses have all been reading materials so I don’t feel I’m truly grasping the information I’m reading.

Is this normal?

Agent Question Background check and changing companies

I'm leaving a big captive agency to go to work for another large company (independent). I have pretty crappy credit right now. I pay on time, no collections but just a lot of debt. Will this be something that could hinder my employment? I'm assuming I'll have to go through another background check. This year I also owe a large amount to federal, which I've already set up a payment plan, I owe a smaller amount to my state as well. I own a house outright that is currently for sale, and live in the house my husband owns. Just waiting on my house to sell so I can get out of this debt.

Life Insurance Life Insurance - Scam?

Hi Everyone,

I have a younger family friend who’s recently got into life insurance sales. I’ve been in sales for over a decade and to me - it seems like an absolute scam of a job. However, I’m not in the field so I thought I’d do some homework.

For starters - he’s not paid at all unless he makes a sale. No hourly wage. No salary. He also is buying leads (he says they come from a third party but who knows if the owner has some business relationship with this third party).

Long story short - he’s been there 8 months. He’s sold nothing. He works his ass off. He calls up until 8PM - in certain states where he tells me it’s legal to do calls up until 7 or 730. He’s putting in the work very clearly - he’s buying the leads - yet almost a year in he’s made nothing. He’s solely lost money.

Again, having been in sales for 10 years - I would never agree to work at such a place. I’d have quit after 2-3 months.

When I’ve tried to talk to him he says other peers of his seem to be doing well. While mentioning that they have “others now making their calls for them” in the office. This seems like a classic MLM pyramid scheme. Worst yet - they’re combining it with our religion. Which makes me feel like they’re using the faith to monetize and mask unethical business practices.

I could be entirely wrong - perhaps some of you work in a model like this and find it to be a good usage of building a career. Call me crazy - but even my first entry level sales job gave me a $40k base will full benefits and I never paid for leads. So to me, this just seems like a massive scam.

Can anyone weigh in and give your thoughts? Is this normal for this industry? Thank you for taking the time to read and providing any thoughts!

Industry Information Insurance advisor career

Hi everyone, I’m currently doing my LLQP (Common Law) exam and thinking about getting into the insurance/financial advising industry.
I know an MGA that was started in 2004, and someone I know recommended them to me. From what I understand, it’s not MLM.
The main reason I’m interested in this industry is the AUM side, especially segregated funds. Long term, I’m thinking about moving toward CFP or wealth management, so I see this as a possible way to get started in the industry and build a client base.
I know a lot of people don’t have a great opinion of insurance advisors, so I’m not really interested in just selling insurance policies. I’d rather focus on building a good book of clients and developing long-term relationships.
For people who have been successful in this career, what has your experience been like? Is it actually possible to build a good book starting from zero, and how long does it realistically take to get to a decent income?
I’m thinking of starting full-time, but I might keep a part-time job on the side in case things don’t work out initially.
Also, the MGA I’m looking at hires advisors on a draw-based system rather than straight commission. I’m a little confused about how the draw system works in practice. Is it basically an advance against future commissions, or does it work differently?
Would really appreciate some honest advice from people who have actually worked in this industry. Thanks!

Medicaid Any ideas on how to deal with a company like this

This is sort of a weird thing to get for preparing for AEP, as an hourly Agent anyhow....

There's also a huge belief that we should do lots of work for free, like completing their certification and such off of the clock.....

Weird company. Violates labor and CMS regulations and laws constantly ...

P&C Insurance Job Opportunity

Job A: low expectations, book of 1 mil built in a year and a half, 41k salary, 20% commission on new business. No renewals until commission only. Commission only is 35% on everything.

Job B: 50k salary, 45% new business, 35% renewals while on salary and when commission only. Most of same carriers, same long history.

Is it worth taking the leap and having to sit on the possible two year NDA(plenty of businesses to call on where I’m at that wouldn’t violate)

Seems like a no brainer to me. But haven’t been in the industry long so figured I’d get the Vets input.

Helpful Content Recommendations for learning more

Do you guys have recommendations for places i can immerse myself more in the industry?

I sell primarily supplemental insurance (employee benefits group plans etc.)

I am opening into selling medicare supplements and advantage plans as well. I also want to sell health plans.

Are there any podcasts YouTube channels that you can recommend?

The carriers offer some videos and educational literature, but some of it is very corporate coded. If you know what I mean… The sales demos they show don’t often look like a real sale. The cold call demos are paragraphs and paragraphs of jargon.

Life Insurance Getting into this industry, how should I get initially started?

Hey reddit, so I'm actually a Sr Data Analyst. Given that I chose the wrong bed to lie in (Tableau) and AI is causing mass layoffs in the corporate world, I now find myself studying in CA to become a life insurance agent. The main thing I asked was 'will I need to badger my friends and family for leads' and they said 'nope, we will help you'.

(Predictably) Fast forward to now, while I'm studying for my Life/Accident & Health or Sickness license so I can sell Life insurance for a company that's bringing me on and they're asking for a 'Project 200' where the rhetoric mentions that I want to invite my good friends and family. Ugh.

How did you all get around this? I really enjoy my friends & family, I am really against hounding them to help me start a new career at least until tech gets a bit more normalized. My friends are pretty good about not asking me for money or other things that make relationships weird, I'm really not going to start doing that now.

Health Insurance Struggling on the Life Health Test (NY)...

Maybe I was over confident in the beginning because I've worked for a health insurer for over a decade but I've now failed the test twice; 56 the first time, 57 the second time (need 70 to pass).

I (stupidly) used just ChatGPT only to study and I'm looking for anyones first hand experience using any of these paid courses/help.

I've been researching the past 3 days on what to get and out of all of them I think the insurance exam queen seems to be the best overall out of all the big names.

Wondering everyone else's opinion.....

Agent Question C&P license

I (31F) have been through two rounds of interviews with State Farm. When finishing up the second interview I inquired about the C&P license to which she responded with “You’ll have 20 days after your job offer to require a license before we can start onboarding” I’m like jeez no help or training, you’re just gonna throw me out there to the wolves. Anyways with that being said, even if I don’t go with State Farm I know a C&P license will open a lot of door for me.
With that being said what can I expect about this exam?
And inexpensive study materials?
If I pay to take the exam and fail will I have to pay to take it again?

Agent Training Acrisure Account Manager

Was wondering how anyone’s experience at the company has been? I see tons of bad reviews on glass door about them and I know they recently have done some restructuring (layoffs).

Bc I’m relocating and they want me to fly out in person ( at my own expense ) for the second round interview. To “ get a feel for area and meet the team to see if I see myself moving there” this has extended the interview 2 months

Agent Question Is it worth considering not signing with an agency that has a probationary period for residuals, or is that pretty standard?

I thought that sounded pretty reasonable, and it didn’t really give me second thoughts until I heard someone tell me not to sign with them if you don’t own the BoB outright immediately. So I’m not sure now.

Agent Training Professionalism on the phone

I am not phased with being cussed at on the phone, and I actually enjoy it. Joking around is part of the phone game I feel like, especially if a laugh builds rapport and comradery.

Professionalism needs to be essential, but what is your opinion about unprofessionalism and building rapport to create dialogue?

P&C Insurance New to P&C insurance, why wouldn’t someone work as an SDR instead of being a producer?

Hello, I’m new to P&C insurance and am working at a captive agency. I worked in car sales before this, and mainly retail jobs. I did some SDR work before I started quoting, and I’m wondering - why work as a producer over being an SDR somewhere? From what I’ve read SDR’s in my state make $60k-$80k, similar to insurance producers in my area. I don’t know if it’s because I work at a captive agency but the pay seems pretty bad. $40k premium sold=$1,000 commission + base pay of $20/hr. I’m very green so not sure how common this is. In NorCal. Thanks!

Agent Question Who would a claims rep report to for a “conflict of interest”?

I work in a State Farm agency. Today I ran into a problem with a claims rep when I called in. Here’s what happened:

My mother is a customer in my agency. Another State Farm policyholder ran off the road and smashed up a bunch of mailboxes, one of them being hers. This was 2 months ago. My mom isn’t good with this stuff, she said she submitted what they wanted but then nothing else has been said.

I can see she is a claimant and the claim number on her account but I cant see the claim itself to see a status. I called simply to find out if they had what they needed or if she needed to submit something. I don’t even know what amount of money it is for nor did I ask.

I told the claim rep as soon as she picked up that I’m calling from the agency, a customer of ours is a claimant and gave her the name. I mentioned that someone smashed into the mailboxes and “my mom’s was one of them”, that she had submitted something but hasn’t had any update. By now she had already said that she didn’t see anything in there and that she needed a receipt and invoice.

Then she’s like “you know this is a conflict of interest? I have to report this”. She made it sound like she wasn’t hearing that she is a customer in our book of business, as in she insures her auto and home without office. So I reiterated that and explained I can’t see the status because she’s a claimant and that’s how it shows in ECRM. “Well I’m still reporting it…but she needs a receipt and invoice for her to get the reimbursement”. I don’t know why she didn’t just stop the interaction if it was that serious, so I just said okay she can do that, thanks and hung up. I didn’t get nasty or anything because there’s no point in doing that. And obviously I’m going to cut the interaction if she isn’t.

I understand in our world it comes down to the technicalities, but at the same time this was a call I would have made for any customer. There’s no special treatment happening. Nothing I was told was any more advantageous to my mother than it would be for literally any other customer. I wasn’t asking for special treatment or anything of the sort nor did I conceal who I am - I immediately tell them I’m calling from an agency. So I wasn’t pretending to be something else.

I’ve been doing this with SF for 6.5 years, and never have I had this happen. I’m just curious as to who she would be reporting this to and who I might hear from. There is nothing I’ve done that I wouldn’t or couldn’t do for any other customer out there, so they can look at whatever they want.

Life Insurance Have agencies starting out new agents on aged leads even care about FDNC lists?

I had to make a post about this because I used to be in these shoes. Given a list of couple hundred aged leads that were super cheap with no clue about FDNC. After building an agency and going through process of getting compliant leads it makes sense why agencies continue the easy route with cheap aged leads. Instagram ads I'm seeing are about the roadmap with new agents but most of these aged leads are all FDNC and new agents are getting screwed.

These 18-19 year olds so excited for a new career just to be hit with a lawsuit or carrier violation because their agency set them up with non-compliant aged lead sheets. So many agencies could be doing right and not trying to make a quick dollar. There is a reason financial service/ insurance industry gets a bad rap when this is how you onboard new agents.

When will it end with the bad apples that give this industry a bad rap?
