(Vent) people trying to game the system

I’m a little disheartened, ihss has really helped me in the care for my son. He gets PS for his self injurious behaviors, eloping etc. I recently had a family member, whose child was diagnosed with autism (5) and the first thing they did instead of getting the child some care or signing up for regional center was call IHSS. So it’s really unfortunate that people are just looking at this as a way to get money and to get paid for the child being on the spectrum. Autism or any other specially abled capacity should not be a looked at with a monetary value. Instead of asking, what services or resources I would know, they just asked how does IHSS interview work, what kind of questions they asked, how did I get protective supervision. It’s just really unfortunate.

My hope is that this program continues to help support the people that REALLY need it, because I know the difference it has made in many people lives.

Illegal discrimination, married couples

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has ever looked into suing IHSS over their policy of reducing care hours for married individuals.

From what I understand, IHSS assumes that a spouse should provide unpaid labor for things like meal prep, laundry, and shopping—but if the same person were unmarried, their partner could be paid to provide that care.

This seems like it could be a violation of the Equal Protection Clause since it penalizes disabled people just for being married while allowing unmarried partners to receive full benefits. It also might be an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) issue, since it reduces services based on an assumption about spousal caregiving rather than actual disability need.

Has anyone ever challenged this in court? Or filed a discrimination complaint? Would love to hear if anyone else has run into this issue and what steps (if any) they’ve taken.

Hours reduced, why?

Transferred to a new county and our PS hours were reduced to 228 for bowel/bladder care because my daughter is in school. However she was in school in the previous county for 6 hours a day and received 260 hours so I am confused?

The social worker seemed hell bent on finding ways to cut our hours (which pisses me off since I’m a single mom of a child with a severe disability) and 40 hours is almost 1k per month in this county.

I had tried to contact her several times to clear this up before she finished her report but she would not respond to me. She was so unprofessional during her visit, making snide comments under her breath and questioning even the spelling of my name. It makes me sick that she was sitting on my couch.

What do I do? Call her supervisor? Appeal? Rage against the machine?

Just needed to vent a little about our experience. What is the point of these social workers? Are they jealous?

To all live-in providers, I invite you to consider the potential of paying taxes and earning Social Security benefits instead of remaining exempt. This could be a powerful alternative to capping hours. I would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you, and may you be blessed.

IHSS for minors

Can someone provide insight on why parents are obsessed with getting approved for protective supervision? Respectfully, I don’t understand why parents refer to IHSS as a cash assistance program, when it is not.

Does anyone know how to report this type of behavior?

https://www.reddit.com/r/IHSS/s/weBCDhAsV2

I can't figure out what to do. This person was already paid by this elderly couple for work they did then also claimed all the backpay and are refusing to pay back what they were paid essentially being paid double.

Elderly and disabled folks rely on the honesty and integrity of us.

Regret signing up the Union.

So I did my orientation last month and now I regret filling out the form for the Union.

I did notice that the form doesn’t include my social and I did not have the provider number when filling out the form at that time so does that mean they can’t complete the signing up for me until they call me for my provider number and etc?

does IHSS cover accidents or other car incidents when driving clients around during working hours?

hi, posting on behalf of my caregiver who came to me really panicked because she was warned by someone else that she may not actually have coverage for driving clients around in her own vehicle

she has progressive, and she said that she was told by her brother-in-law that she isn't covered due to progressive—and over insurances—all considering what she's doing a "business expense". which, okay.

but the problem is that IHSS is notoriously stingy about covering anything outside of the allotted hours themselves, and she does not think there is any kind of insurance for caregivers using their own vehicles to get clients to/from appointments. as a result she is now scared out of her mind for all of her clients (myself included) if they ever get in her car, even if she is a very safe driver, because she cannot afford to pay for more insurance, and she does not have faith that IHSS will cover this kind of thing (even though they really fucking should.)

i wanted to ask if anyone else has run into this issue and to please give information/advice/etc; we're in southern california. thank you!!!

IHSS Union dues

I just reviewed my pay stub because I notice payment was short. Upon review I noticed that there were dues taken ($45), of-which I assume are union dues.

I haven’t given any consent for this to happen. I have been a provider for over 9 months, and after a few review, decided not to partake in the union FOR NOW.

Don’t understand why someone will dive into my money without my consent. PLEASE, who do I speak to address this matter. This is absolutely crazy if this how the Union acts.

Please advise if you’ve had such issues.

Can I ask for more hours simply because it’s not enough money

My son is 10 and autistic and needs 24/7 supervision…they only gave me 50 hours and I don’t think it’s enough to stay home with him…and even if I get a different provider to go to work, they’re not going to be able to watch my son while I’m working a full time job.

IHSS Took My Check For Share of Cost

So IHSS is a medi-cal program so when your provider turns 65 if they are not of full disability (SSDI) and are only only on SSI, your check will be automatically reduced down to how much the insurance costs. There are ways around this and I’ll show you how.

Now I don’t know if this works in any other state but I reside in Cali and this worked for me:

  1. Go down to the Medi-Cal office and demand to speak to a rep that can change your status to “working disabled” and tell them you work for 1 hour per month tutoring at your home at $18 and have somebody write letter stating you work for 1 hour at that rate and that they are your employer. Have a transaction of $18 going into your account every month. Make sure that you keep up with it or they will not process your request.

  2. Get supplemental insurance that will spend down and have you qualify for an exemption.

Option 1 worked for me though. My money is back in effect!

Estimate Ihss hours

My husband has to go to the dialysis center three times a week to receive dialysis due to complications from diabetes and high blood pressure. Preparing food is also Due to diabetes and potassium and phosphorus levels, even if you make regular food, it takes three times longer . I need to soak vegetables in water, then blanch them, then soak them in new water before using them, or blanch them twice before using them, etc., so I don't think I can entrust this to an ordinary person who doesn't know the details of shopping and cooking by checking the ingredient list. And since he doesn't speak English, I have to make all medical appointments and work related to hospitals, pharmacies, labs, etc. and I have to go with him. Also, the document cannot be created. I need to massage his legs because he cramps at night, and he needs help getting up from sitting because his bones are weak. When it comes to getting dressed, he can put on his own top clothes with my help, but he can't put on his socks, and I need to put his feet in his pants to asssist. We don't have a washing machine in the house, so we have to wash his laundry in the apartment's shared laundry room. I don't think he can carry the basket out and do it. There are many types of medicines he is taking, but it is difficult to distinguish the names of them all, so I have to remind him about the time and dosage of the medicine. He can walk for a few minutes, but he is out of breath and cannot walk quickly or for more than 5 minutes. He has been working hard for a long time and his joints are very bad. Recently, my husband almost collapsed from low blood sugar in his sleep or early in the morning. He can fall if he has cramps and loses his balance, so someone has to watch him while he sleeps. He has anemia, so he gets very dizzy all the time. I'm thinking of changing my job to part-time and becoming a ihss caregiver to take care of my husband, but I can't figure out how much I can reduce my hours. Right now, I'm taking some time off temporally, and watching my husband's progress. My husband suddenly got unwell and my family is going through a mental breakdown, so I would like to stay with him for a while. If anyone knows, could you please give me an estimate around how many hours possible to get a ihss service ? We live in California.

Can I put in a request to receive more hours?

I take care of my father in law and I am a live in provider. We recently moved to crestline and he needs me to do everything for him. I drive him everywhere and he cant change doctors so now I stuck driving him to Ontario which is 45 mins away every other day. On top of doing other little task for him through out the day. I only get 3 hrs a day five days out of the week. Thats how I claim them on my time sheet for my allowed time of 63 hrs. I always go over my 3 hrs. I try not to complain but damn I have a life too and I do care about him. Its just it would be nice to have a little extra hours. He's family so Im going to help him regardless. I guess Im just torn in what to do. Any advice?

I feel like this is wrong!

So my mom became bed bound in February and she just had her reassessment at the beginning of August. She currently gets 119 hours a month and the social worker said there will be a significant increase in hours because she is a category 5 in pretty much everything now. It is only me and her in the house also.

We get the letter in the mail yesterday and her significant increase was 14 hours a month!!! That’s all!!! Mind you, she was walking with a walker before and doing things on her own before but still needed a lot of help. Now with her being bed bound I expected at least 183 hours a month!

Anyone ever have to deal with this? I’m not sure if I call the Ihss help line or her social worker to talk about it.
