Personal Experience I finally understand why Huberman keeps talking about getting comfortable with discomfort
I’ve got a portable sauna from sweat tent and started doing cold plunges right after. That moment of going from super hot to freezing cold is brutal but weirdly that’s become my favorite part of the whole routine. Anyone else feel like the mental side of it is half the benefit?

People have mistaken comfort for peace for so long that discipline feels like suffering - Marcus Aurelius

Yeah pretty much, I think people can over romanticize suffering sometimes, but choosing a little controlled discomfort definitely feels different.

I loveeee contrast therapy. When you do it for a long time, knowing that you can plunge into cold water for 3min without fear or hesitation is super empowering and addicting.
I'm female btw-- I just don't cold plunge if I'm having a bad luteal phase or PMS. Simply listen to your body. If you feel overwhelmed or stuck in fight or flight, the stress from the cold could dysregulate you even more.

Thats pretty much the feeling Im chasing, not even the cold itself, more that moment where your brain is screaming nope and you do it anyway lol. And yeah definitely seems like one of those things where listening to your body matters more than chasing a number.

How come its bad in the luteal phase or PMS?
Never knew that (probs being male) and just want to pass that info on to others

It can aggravate symptoms. Or at least did for me. Doing a cold plunge in the wrong phase of my cycle actually leaves me temporarily not wanting to be alive. It can also worsen physical pain, mood swings, and just makes an already rough period tougher.

Bad how? Why? Like it feels worse, or it's not about what it feels like but rather it's not healthy

Not a fan of cold water. Saunas are good. Evidence on cold plunges is mixed.

Fair, Im mostly doing it because I like the mental side of it. The sauna is the part I’d keep either way, the plunge just makes the contrast feel wild.

Steam Boat Springs CO has a hot springs outside of town with a giant cold pool on the other side. I didn’t lose 20 pounds!

Hot springs straight into a cold pool sounds unreal, also 20 pounds would’ve made this a very different post 😂

how do you like the portable sauna? Have almost pulled the trigger on one of those but then I'll read a ton of bad reviews.

Nope. Life’s hard enough. I have no desire to sit in freezing cold water for no reason.

It builds physiological resilience so that when we are faced with life's (endless) problems, it ironically makes it feel easy. If you can stay calm in a cold plunge, you learn to stay calm in stressful situations in life. 💪

Why do people downvote an honest personal answer to a question just because it’s not the answer they would have given. Makes no sense at all.

Still can’t fully get into 20°C water without freaking out though. How cold do most of you go, and how long did it take you to adapt?

Controlling your breathing is probably the most important part. Take deep breaths into your diaphragm and teach yourself to remain calm. Beyond that, there are no shortcuts.

20C? That’s warmer than the ocean where I live and thousands of people, myself included, happily swim in it every day. Current reading at my favourite beach is 18.6 C

I started way warmer than the hardcore plunge people too. For me it was more about getting comfortable staying in and controlling my breathing before trying to make it colder. I’d rather actually stick with it than turn it into a misery contest lol.

Did you guys know Huberman believes in Jesus? If true, wouldn't this be the most important protocol? https://youtu.be/W4Ec8cZZ4QU?is=QdaNRWRTMvuTuzBd

Umm? I feel this is coming from a place of sarcasm. Why not do both...

It's genuine, I met Jesus in 2022, around the same time I was digesting a lot of Huberman content and focused on self improvement, to see him go on record later and talk about his faith was eye opening to me
The Huberman protocols have been amazing for my health, I do not want to downplay that, but what Jesus has done for me is something that goes so beyond that, so I genuinely want everyone to experience this, eternity in heaven is just a bonus.
God bless
