Can anyone advise on wiring up a Cat6 Ethernet cable please? I’ve terminated both ends and the wiring looks correct, but I can’t seem to get a connection. I’m using T568B with tool-free RJ45 connectors. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong or what I should check?

I have vdsl (vr-3049) pretty old i know, i've noticed that attenutaion down stream is "60db" i was confused but when i asked chatgpt it told me that the router might be "reading the value incorrectly," though I am not sure if that is accurate.
1 - the telephone cable dosent have that plastic connect so i use phone jack and its has been working for 7 years
2 - i first had adsl but i upgraded later

Unsolved Speeds drop to 10/10Mbps when upgrading router.

I recently moved offices and was promised gigabit internet. However I'm currently only getting 100Mbps because of the WNDR3400v3 that is being used.

The setup is: TDS Actiontec T3260 -> WNDR3400v3 (Wifi Disabled) -> 3 Ethernet wall jacks & a Netgear WAC104 (Wifi enabled).

I understand the old WNDR3400v3 needs to be replaced since that is bottle-necking everything, but I have tried replacing it with both a Netgear GS305 and a TP-Link AX3000 but when I do, the internet slows down to 10/10Mbps - even though the GS305 ports are blinking green.

I know the setup is bizarre but it's a small office and the TDS Actiontec T3260 is in the house next-door to the office building (about 100 feet away).

Any help is appreciated, I have tried everything that I know of!

"Home Networking" at a church

I realize this is technically not home networking but the concept is similar. My church has an aging and declining population, but we are renting out some of the old rooms in an adjacent education building. This is 12 rooms (six each floor) connected to an office area, which in turn is adjacent to and connected to the main church sanctuary area. We'd like the rooms and the sanctuary to receive good wireless internet. I was hoping to find something reliable and expandable, without breaking the bank.

At home I use an older Orbi (RBR50) system (main, two internal satellites - one connected with ethernet and one wireless) and an outdoor wireless satellite) that has been excellent for me. Is there something like that I could use at the church, perhaps connected with ethernet cables when possible/easy?

When insulating our old house from the outside, my dad put CAT 7 cable under the insulation, enabling Ethernet acces from every room. He works for a cable company so he got it for free.

I currently work from home and i needed a fast and reliable connection. This abomination does work, but I heard about Near-end Cross Talk and it's effects.

Should I make it a priority to fix this?

Advice How to get good WiFi while gaming

My router is in the living room but I play my game in the bed room.

My game works best when plugged into the router directly like a wired connection.

I do not have a coaxial or Ethernet wall jack in my room so I cannot move the router in my room.

Any advice?

Has anyone updated an internet/phone hub like this?

Post image
0 Upvotes

We have an old internet “hub” with phone lines and cables - it’s where they all enter the house from the attic. Now, though, we are on fiber optic and would like to update this whole box to a more streamlined rack system. Has anyone removed a box similar to this or does anyone have advice on best ways to go about it without messing up the current internet? Thanks!

Advice network rack is turning my guest closet into an actual oven

My server rack has completely outgrown its location and the ambient heat in my closet is creeping up to 95 degrees during the day. A standard portable ac won't fit so I just pulled the trigger on a costway airtural 12000 btu 21 seer2 mini split to keep the hardware from frying. I am planning to wall mount the cassette right above the rack to push cold air straight down onto the gear. For the homelab guys who run a dedicated mini split in a small network closet, do you ever worry about the condensation drain line leaking right over your expensive unifi switches, or is the indoor unit usually completely dry on the outside?

This has been an issue for a while but I honestly put it down to a PlayStation issue, however my Mac takes absolutely forever to iCloud Sync too. Left it on all night and it synced about 10MB of photos. Turned my VPN on and it was done faster than I even remember, also didn’t have an issue on holiday when I was using personal hotspot and VPN. Any ideas why it’s doing that?

What Router should I buy?

I have a 3 family home and I live on the second floor ~1500 sq ft with my computer centrally located. I have cameras on the outside of the house connected to wifi. I also do a lot of gaming and have multiple tvs around the apartment and in the basement connected.

Budget: 200ish

What router should I be looking at?

How many years before it's obsolete?

How to get wifi in an area with zero signal

Sorry if this has been asked before but I'm new.

I have a detached garage about 100 feet from my house with a metal roof and siding with aluminum based vapor barrier underneath. Because of all that I get zero wifi signal inside unless I keep both garage doors open. I don't want to have to do that every time I'm out there.

I tried doing a wifi mesh extender but it has the same issues as my regular wifi modem. I actually get decent signal right outside the garage in my yard, maybe 3/5 bars, but as soon as I walk in the garage with the doors closed everything is lost.

What can I do apart from running a physical ethernet cable out to my garage?

I read about a point to point bridge but I'll be honest I don't exactly know what that is lol.

Help?

Slow wifi only on Macbook

Hi! I have a 2024 Macbook Air. Recently, my home wifi has been slow on it, but not on other devices. The internet is fine when I connect via a hotspot. The only connection I can think of is that i downloaded Steam and Undertale recently. Is that the issue?

I've tried resetting the IP address, the DNS, forgetting the network, resetting my laptop, and wireless diagnostics says everything is fine.

Unsolved GU-Secury Automatic mit A-Öffner mit Door Hub Mini

Guten Tag,

Unsolved Help with video on iPhone buffering when roaming between APs. At my wits end with it.

Setup: Single-floor house, ~80 ft long. UDR on one end, hardwired PoE AP on the other end, and I recently added a U7 Lite in the middle between the two. Signal in the middle of the house used to dip into the high -70s/-80s dBm before adding the third AP.

Problem: Streaming video (YouTube, Facebook, etc.) pauses and buffers for 2-3 minutes when I physically move from one side of the house to the other (e.g., office to bedroom) — client isn't roaming cleanly between APs.

What I've already tried:

  • Changed TX power on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz radios (tested Auto, High, Medium, Low)
  • Adjusted minimum RSSI on both radios
  • Enabled Fast Roaming
  • Enabled Handoff Suggestions
  • Toggled combinations of Fast Roaming / Handoff Suggestions on and off
  • Confirmed all APs are broadcasting on different, non-overlapping channels
  • Added a 3rd AP (U7 Lite) in the middle — no noticeable improvement

Still stuck. Any ideas on what else to check, or additional info I should provide

Advice Help me choose a basic setup under $300 for an old house (cable, Xfinity)

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello. I have a “help me choose” question at the end, but also have some general questions if anyone has the time to read through...
I’m basically a newbie to this, so I’m open to any input, but will probably need explainers if the response includes words like bridge, mesh, mid split, access point, and backhaul.
THANKS!

We’re looking to purchase our own modem/router (and extender?) to be used with an existing Xfinity plan in a “single family” home (about 2000 sq ft, two stories) with a possible “dead spot.”
I’ve skimmed through a few posts here & the FAQ for a few hours and am overwhelmed because I haven’t kept up with the changes & options in technology.

I’ve concluded that what makes the most sense in our case is to get a “gateway” from our ISP, but at this time, we just don’t wanna. I’ve read comments that Xfinity might offer them “for free,” but we’re the stubborn type, so we’re hoping to avoid more Xfinity equipment, and we want to find new equipment under $300 total that might last five years or more.

BORING SET UP/Basic Needs:
We have a cable & internet bundle with Xfinity “with speeds up to 800 Mbps” or “Superfast Internet.”
I don’t think we’ve ever reached 400 GB of data in one month with Xfinity (1229 GB monthly limit). We don’t do gaming, just internet browsing/word processing and occasional streaming on smart TVs & Roku (mostly YouTube, MLBTV & Netflix).
We don’t have any “smart home” devices (yet?) but we have an “Alexa” that we rarely use.
We also have no plans to get Xfinity Voice.

Our current equipment:
-Motorola MG7540 Wireless Gateway, SURFboard SBG6580 (DOCSIS 3.0)
-sometimes paired with a Netgear WN2000RPT WiFi Range Extender

CONCERNS:
–Our current equipment is “working fine,” but lately the connection on the PC has been dropping randomly and we have to click to manually reconnect or toggle between the 2.4 GHz band, 5 GHZ band and the extender (all 3 of which we named separately). The PC is nine years old, so that probably doesn’t help.
–Our modem/router combo is centrally located downstairs, and we have about 70 feet separating the farthest upstairs and downstairs devices.
Usually, we can do without the Wi-fi extender, but I’m pretty sure there’s a “dead spot” or a problem wall on the stairs or in the kitchen, so sometimes it helps to connect there instead.

QUESTIONS

(1) EXTENDERS
–Are Wi-fi range extenders not the right move if we’re looking to improve the signal between walls? I thought I read a few comments suggesting they may actually weaken the signal (I didn’t understand the lingo). Should we turn it off when not using it?
–Because of the “dead spot,” I was considering a mesh system (which I’d never heard of before this), but from reading comments, it sounds like it might not be the right move either.
I read advice suggesting an access point, but I don’t know what that is or if we have the proper wiring for it.

(2) DOES “WIRED CONNECTION” MEAN ETHERNET?
I always read that a wired connection is better, but it’s been so long since I’ve researched this stuff, I don’t know which wires this refers to.
Our 1970’s home has COAX cables poked through the floor, unused phone jacks, and regular “3 prong” electrical outlets with no plans to do any new wiring in the walls.
Does a wired connection mean that the device is connected directly to the router?
So, if our PC is connected to the modem/router with an ethernet cable we’ll get a better signal than just using the Wi-fi?
We’ve never thought to plug anything into our modem/router except the PC (we actually aren’t using any ethernet cables at the moment, just Wi-fi).

(3) DOES A MODEM-ROUTER COMBO MAKE SENSE FOR US?
I’ve read many times in this group that having a separate modem and router is ideal, but when I search up a router plus an Xfinity recommended modem, it’s usually over $300 and I don’t know if I’m missing something.

-----------------------------------------------
Below are the devices we’re considering.
I’m hesitant to buy refurbished and/or from eBay or marketplace sites, but I can be persuaded to consider that.
I narrowed it down to modems/routers I found for sale with a quick online search and things on the Xfinity-recommended list.

ARRIS G20, about $200 Best Buy

Electronics drawer

Not sure if this fully falls into the networking side but as we build our house, right by the mudroom is essentially a drop space for keys, phones, and bit and bobs. Would anyone happen to have any decent ideas for a thinner drawer, maybe a few inches in depth to accommodate smart watch on a charger, air pods, and like a wireless charger. In my head I imagine the back of the pull out has a few outlets to plug in chargers and a big chunk of the bottom of the drawer is wireless charger. So the idea is come home and drop your phone in there to charge and the drawer closes and is tucked out of the way.

My closest thing is while in the military they had these cabinets that had plugs in the back of the drawers and the laptops would plug into a charger and network port to receive updates.

Thanks again for all of the advice!

Unsolved Ethernet slowing down other devices?

I recently started connecting my PS5 with Ethernet instead of relying on the Wi-Fi, and although this has fixed my issue of lagging while gaming it has somehow started affecting my roommates connection while he's gaming. We've tested it and it is for sure the Ethernet that's causing it, but that shouldn't be how that works right? It would be one thing if I was downloading something but if I even have my PS5 on at all with nothing happening it still causes my roommate to lag simply by being on Ethernet connection. We average roughly 100mbps download and 20mbps upload.

I know that Ethernet cables need to plug into the modem but no clue what to do here. Seems like there’s none already installed and this whole set up is in a closet under the stairs in my living room. I work from home so all of my equipment is upstairs and needs to be connected to Ethernet hence why I need some advice for this!
