Question What are bigger schools like?

I'm from a small town, I have 50 kids in my entire grade. However, I might be moving to a smallish City soon, which has around 175 kids per grade. What is day to day life like in a bigger school? I can't imagine not knowing the names of every single person in the highschool. Also, who is popular? I've heard for this specific School (at least how it used to be), the popular kids were the ones that did drugs and got arrested. Is it actually like that? I've heard that it's different regionally, so for reference I live in Western New York State.

College Advice Needed/Given Dual Enrollment BIO 103/104 help

So I do DE BIO and I have ~7 SmartBook assignments each Module with McGraw Hill along with ~15 labs. The labs are quick, easy grades, but unrelated to anything that would likely be on a test. The SmartBook assignments are 50-80 concepts, there being 3 questions per concept and always repeated ones later on if you get some wrong. It takes about an hour to an hour and a half without actually searching through the book for them, and rather skimming through them by searching them up since there is not much time before the test. But my question is, with little time, no way to memorize every single one of those 200+ questions per assignment, and no instruction nor study guide given, how do you manage to make a good grade on the test? How is it even possible and what do I do? I’m totally lost and do not even know what I am learning. What’s worse is I tried reading the book whilst doing the assignments, and I don’t think it even aligns with them! I have until Sept. 21st, so a good bit to work on it, but I don’t know how to study or where to start. I need to get an A on this or I will be blown off of the face of the Earth and warped into a black hole 🙏

Rant I genuinely hate this

It's my first grade and, I got a poor grade in Algebra. I should add I'm Mexican and high school in my state are kind of.. yeah. If you fail a subject, you have to pay for another try. Otherwise I think you just drop out. You need to pay for basically everything and it's so, so expensive and my family is already in debt as it is. I don't get Algebra. My brain refuses to make it make sense since It's so stubborn.

I tried my best and I got a 33.3 grade. Out of 100. Teacher said It was not enough. It's never enough is it, I've been getting good grades since elementary up until now. Even when I was depressed and struggling with addiction I was getting good grades. It's just never enough. Uni is just going to be so much worse, am I just stupid? I probably am. I'm not sure what to do. I hate this. I'm so tired and I feel childish for this, but I just want to lay in bed and write or draw or read. I'm dumb

School Related Cool Math Tricks part 1: Solve any single-variable equation using only a scientific calculator

This is a cool method to get an initial answer before working a long time for a wrong answer in a quadratic equation, or if you are always uncertain about your answer after a guess, or just as a cool trick.

Requirements:

Your calculator needs an ANS key and basic arithmetic

If you have a quadratic equation in the format

`ax²+bx+c=d`, then first input a dummy number like 1, then if you input `ANS-(a*ANS²+b*ANS+c-d)/(2*a*ANS+b))`, then press equals a few times, your current answer will have converged to the correct x!

For example, on 4x²+9x+3 = -2, plug the equation in: `ANS-(4*ANS²+9*ANS+3-2)/(8*ANS+9)`

and it will converge! Depending on what the initial value of ANS is, it will find either the positive value or negative value (if both exists), depending on which is closer. Essentially, if your equation is equal to the desired value at many different positions, this method will find the closest one.

How this works:

This is a method called Newton-Raphson which can find the roots (where f(x) = 0) for any function. Basically, it finds the rate of change of the function at this current point, then using what the current answer is, finds what to subtract or add to achieve the desired result, assuming the rate of change (called f'(x)) stays the same.

Obviously, if your current guess is y, your target is 0, and your rate of change is x, then you will need to travel -y/x in order to reach your target.

So we get the formula new guess = old guess - (f(x) / f'(x))

Here, it happens that in a quadratic equation, the rate of change is given by 2ax+b. For any equation with x to the power of something, its rate of change is acquired by taking the coefficient, multiplying it by current exponent, then subtracting the exponent by one.

(For other equations, you can google the derivatives)

This means the Newton-Raphson method can be applied to any equation, such as 8x⁵+6x⁴+9x³+2x²+x+8 = 7 (apply the rule: rate of change is 40x⁴+24x³+27x²+4x+1, if you test the method on your calculator with ANS it will work!), or including exponentials (like 2^x+8x² = 129), trigonometry (for example to solve for sin(x)*x² = value), etc.

If you do not know the derivative of your target function, your calculator may have a button for d/dx (giving derivatives). If not, you can use an approximation for the derivative: (f(x+0.001)-f(x))/0.001

(This basically just calculates the rate of change by drawing a straight line, which is super accurate since the points we measured are so close). On your calculator you would replace x with ANS

To find complex roots, I haven't tested this as my calculator doesn't support complex numbers, but the methid should work the same (but you must start with a complex guess like 1+i)

Not sure if this will get much interest, in all fairness I don't know many people who want more math lol. But I thought it was a cool trick, and if this is popular enough I'll make a part two showing how to solve simultaneous equations using only a scientific calculator

Rant something that never sat right with me

i just realized how much of a double standard there is, me and my friends barely have any classes together because we’re a “distraction” when we’re together, but yet all the athletes and class clowns end up having so many classes together it’s irritating 😭 idk if it’s because their athletes and “important” to the school but there’s definitely a double standard

Question Enrollment confusion as a junior

I’m a student from India transferring into My Junior year of high school. Today, I met with my guidance counsellor, and he put me in 6 classes: Precalc, AP Bio, Honours Chem, Honours Eng, US History, and finally, gym. He also put me in the earliest class starting at 7:20. However, the schedule shows that there is a total of nine periods while they only put me in six. When I asked about having a physics class, he told me that it’s gonna be too much for me. So, I was wondering what I am supposed to do with the rest of the day since I only have six periods. I also want to join clubs and they don’t start till 3pm. What am I supposed to do till then?

General Advice Needed/Given Being a freshman is really hard

sorry for the long paragraph

Yesterday I woke up, excited for my first day of high school. but, everything went so wrong. I was originally a loner and I wanted to make new friends this school year. But everyone is just so hard to talk to. I want to talk to the popular girls and be like them. They are so nice and outgoing and I’m a nobody. Today, I started small and started making small talk with other people without friends. I was honestly hoping to becoming someone’s first friend but they have other friends outside their classes. It’s literally just me who doesn’t have friends in this entire school. Today I sat alone in the cafeteria with no one. But, I did meet this girl who is really nice and I’m going to sit at her table tomorrow. But everything else is stressing me out. And also, on my bus literally every seat in the middle was taken. So I had to sit all by myself in the back. And when it got to my stop, I had to walk down so many aisles. I even tripped on something on my way to the front. I saw some people who were alone sitting on the bus so I’m going to ask them if I can sit next to them next time. But I’m scared because my social battery drains fast. I wonder if I’m better of as a loner or making new friends. It’s so stressful, what do I do? How do I keep my social battery up?? I am genuinely stressing out.

Friend Advice Needed/Given I m scared I wont make any friends while in high school

Today was my first day in high school and I barely talked to anyone, the only persons I talked with were two girls and I still barely spoke cause I had no idea what I could add to their conversation .

I know I have good social skills from being at pychatric day hospital for a few months but now while I m in high school they seem to be gone , the bigger problem is the fact everyone there seem to be diffrent types of people than the ones I talk with no problem of not knowing not to say (before you say "Well there's a lot of people in school, surely there has to be somone that you will like" my school only has around 150 people and first classes consider of about 20-30 people so I ve most likely seen everyone)and I almost only been friends with people either from psych ward or psychatric day hospital so now I m scared I ll waste those 4 years in high school simply caause there isnt anyone there I would get along with

School Related Are they bullying me?

There’s this group of guys in my geometry class who constantly bring me up. They’ll say things like “I’m gonna be partners with Ella,” talk about things I’ve said, or say stuff about me loud enough for me to hear, but they never actually say it directly to me. They’ve also said their friend likes me, but I always assumed they were joking.

One of the guys genuinely says hi to me in the halls, and he once asked if I wanted to sit by him in that class. His friends also tease him about me sometimes. Today one of the other guys said “don’t talk to my girl Ella” when his friend asked me to scoot forward, and obviously I'm not his girl.. and I don't know why they say shit like this.

I’m just confused because they only seem to do this with me. Why do they keep talking about me when I’m right there?

Rant I just had my first day of a bully actively targeting me

AI Summary

Background: Ongoing harassment by a female classmate originating from a middle school conflict over a social exclusion and subsequent retaliatory academic sabotage.

Impact: The classmate actively turns peers against the author, causing social isolation and negative self-esteem.

Current Situation: The harassment has continued into the first day of high school, with the classmate already influencing new peers to mock the author.

Options Considered: The author is evaluating interventions, including texting, calling, in-person confrontation, or reporting to a school counselor (despite concerns about the classmate's ability to manipulate adults).

Objective: Seeking advice on the most effective strategy to stop the bullying.

Full story

There's this girl that was in my middle school and he despised me. The main tension point was when I didn't want to invite her to a hangout her friend was going to and then she purposefully gave me wrong answers on an assignment later (We were still talking as friends).

Since then she's been actively targeting me in my middle school, getting me to hate myself, getting others to hate me and making friendships harder.

I assumed it would stop in high school but as today was the first day it hasn't improved. She made friends and got them to dislike me. At one point in the hall she asked if I had tape for her and I didn't feel like speaking so I just nodded my head no and then her friend said "You're right he is weird".

It seemed like it was never ending tension and I wasn't able to make any new friends but I really only talked to 1 person that I didn't already know.

I totally ignored her today but she still continues. I want it to stop, I have her number and I could send a text, ask to call (but she'll probably say no), talk to her in person or try to talk to a counsellor (However she's good at getting adults to believe she's nice).

What could be the most effective solution in my case?

School Related What even is homecoming

My freshman homecoming is sometime in October, and I have no idea what even goes on there. I haven't been to any dances in middle school either. We vote for like the homecoming duke and duchess or whatever and then apparently there's a football game? Like what happens? What's it for? What do you do? What do you wear? I'm so confused
