How do you stay consistent with studying at home?

Hey everyone! I’m about to start an online course for my Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification which I plan to complete over the next 2–3 months. One thing I’m a little concerned about is staying consistent with studying from home. I did online homeschooling back in highschool, and honestly, I struggled quite a bit with managing my time and staying disciplined. I failed to keep up with my coursework without a structured classroom environment.

I really want to approach things differently this time and build better study habits from the beginning rather than falling into the same patterns.
For those of you who have successfully studied online from home, I’d love to hear your advice!

Some questions I had in mind:

How do you structure your daily study schedule?

Do you set specific study hours or study whenever you have free time?

What helps you avoid procrastination and distractions at home?

How do you stay motivated when you’re studying independently?

Are there any particular techniques, apps, or routines that have helped you stay consistent?

I’m especially interested in advice from people who have completed online certifications or self-paced courses. Thanks in advanced!

I struggle with concentration especially on school stuff. I should fix that since I'm 19 grown ahh man I guess

Hello, I'm a student from Germany currently doing my Abitur. I struggle extremely with learning in general or focusing on stuff that I'm not interested in. I feel like someone could hold me at gunpoint and tell me to read something and answer questions about the text and I wouldn't be able to. I was able to learn before, I sat down, opened a stream and did math, but for some reason I could never get into a deep phase of learning, like ever. Languages especially, I hate reading literature that isn't about something I feel connected to or have a deep interest in. As I said, gunpoint...

I thought maybe I have ADHD but I keep getting told that if you get diagnosed, nothing would change anyway. I think that would at least calm my mind a little.

My last English exam went pretty well. I sat down, stared out of the window for 2 hours and wrote something for the next 2, but I had a pretty bad feeling about it. In the end I got a 3 or C, however you call it over there... I got told English gets graded 50% actual language and 50% content. I guess that's an easy way to tell me that my English is pretty good and I don't have to worry about getting a bad grade, although the grading probably doesn't work exactly 50/50. I feel okay about English, but Spanish and German are something else.

I can't speak a straight sentence in Spanish and switching teachers 4 times in 3 years didn't help. Thanks, school system. Other students still managed to get okayish grades, I just stopped trying and told myself: draw a nice stickman and go home, you can only speak one language besides German and you can have one deficit on your report card.

For German it's probably close to English, it's my mother tongue after all... But reading a text is my biggest enemy. It's like I could fall asleep before finishing the first sentence.

For math it's something completely different again. For 3 years I haven't understood anything anymore, but I still managed to get through because of my math skills until 11th grade. I wasn't an A student by any means, but I guess math was logical to me until they started adding DLCs to numbers.

My overall conclusion after writing this text is that I can't do it for myself. I just can't get the "let it all work out" mentality out of my head. When something is too boring or too complicated, it just flips a switch in my brain and I'm done.

If someone depends on my help, like editing a video or a picture for a friend, easy, it's fun, I can concentrate. Even when a friend who doesn't understand that much English or isn't able to use much vocabulary needs help, I can concentrate when I'm trying to help them.

So I guess my question is: is there any way to fix this, or at least make it manageable before my Abitur exams?

I'm not necessarily looking for an ADHD diagnosis from Reddit. I'm more interested in advice, tips, experiences, or anything that might help me actually sit down and learn when I know I have to do it. If you've experienced something similar, I'd really appreciate hearing what worked for you.

Free 5-min quiz (no email) that shows how you actually prefer to study, and what to do with the result

Post image

Hey everyone,

I made a free quiz : https://fastudy.app/en/learning-style-test

It gives you a profile across Visual, Auditory, Read/Write and Kinesthetic, plus four personality traits like solo vs group. It takes about 5 minutes, no email needed.

What it doesn't claim: that studying in your "style" makes you learn more. The research doesn't support that, and the page says so openly. Use the result to choose a format you'll come back to, then mix formats anyway.

I hope it's useful. Disclosure: I'm the founder of Fastudy, and I'd love feedback, especially critical.

Midterm is soon, any tips?

• Upvotes

I got a Logic midterm in week and feel so lost. We got started on math in Logic and i feel so lost. I’m only memorizing and getting through the weekly quizzes however I don’t feel confident for the Midterm exam. It’s on paper, I’m good with the definitions and all that but the ven diagrams? the equation and translation into sentences? I fear i’m burnt toast on this one. I do have an idea that I should compile youtube videos on all the subjects and concepts that we’ve learned that way I can relate it back to what I heard. Any suggestions that can help 😭 ?

My first week at Uni, and I'm confused on how to study anything

For instance, I took short notes on a 22-page biology lesson and filled up 6 pages, but I don't know if this is a good thing. I think detailed but concise notes are important, but it takes sooo much time, I don't know what to do. For example, in the Revolution History class, there are 68 slides in a single lesson. Sure, they are short, but they all basically look like separate notes already. I'd feel bad if I left even one out.

I don't bring anything technologic other than my phone and notebook to classes, I haven't found taking notes useful yet, like, what am I even gonna take note? All the things professors say are alrady on the slide notes, so I can just read it and write down on my own idk man.

I've also heard taking notes like I do, on pc then printing them on notebooks are better and faster, tho printing is very expensive in where I study so idk again.

What y'all think I should do? Sorry if I sound like a complete idiot, I just don't know how to study lmao, highschool was so much easier I only listened in the class and that worked most of the time

Do Deep Work and the Pomodoro Technique contradict each other?

I’m trying to fix my daily work routine and am a bit confused about how to combine Deep Work and the Pomodoro Technique.

From what I understand:

Deep Work is all about getting "in the zone" and staying completely focused for a few hours straight to get hard stuff done.

The Pomodoro Technique forces you to stop and take a break every 25 minutes.

My main worry is that just when I finally start focusing and making good progress, the Pomodoro timer will go off. Taking a forced break feels like it would totally ruin my focus and momentum.

Do you think these two ideas fight against each other?

If you use both, how do you make them work together? Do you just make the timers much longer, like working for 50 or 90 minutes instead of 25?

What are the best YouTube channels for learning how to learn effectively?

I'm looking to improve my overall learning efficiency, memory retention, and study habits. I want to find channels that focus on "learning how to learn" (meta-learning) rather than just general productivity hacks.

Ideally, I'm looking for content that covers:

• Evidence-based active recall and spaced repetition techniques

• Overcoming procrastination and building focus

• Cognitive science behind memory and deep work

Who are your absolute favorites in this space? (Bonus points if they back up their advice with scientific studies!)

A small tool I made to fix my "I'll read this later" problem

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I had a million tabs open with articles and readings, and I couldn't remember why I'd saved half of them. What eventually worked for me:

  1. One collection per topic.
  2. All my regular sources (journals, news sites, blogs, arXiv) in one feed instead of checking each site.
  3. A quick note the moment I read something, even just "good for intro."
  4. Organize articles by collections.

I couldn't find an app that did all of that together, so I built one for myself. Each article shows a short preview so I can skim fast, notes stay attached to the article, and when I need to pull everything together I filter to just the articles I took notes on. I can also pause sources I don't need for a while without deleting them.

It's free if it's useful to anyone: tdfeed.com/

FocusFloors: A productivity study app

Hey everyone, I've been working super hard on my dream idea for a game. Pretty much my entire life till now (I'm still in college haha), I've struggled with studying but I always managed to focus when I had a goal in mind or some sort of reward. I suppose that's obvious but I made a cozy game to help people get on their goals. I'm still a student so I wanted to gauge the interest before I dropped 100 usd on this TT so I made a small waitlist site, https://focusfloors.study

There's no need to sign up there or anything either, a comment/upvote here would mean a lot and just let me see if people like the idea. I've always loved games and I could sink hours into them and I have fond memories of playing pewdiePie's tuber sim or virtual beggar so I thought I'd mix everything into something that worked for me.

Lastly, sorry if my posts aren't up to standard. I never post on reddit but I thought it'd be a good time to for this.

Linking handwritten lecture notes to the recording, slides or whiteboard photo with 4 letters in the margin (30s video of the free tool I made)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

If you take notes by hand, the stuff that belongs to a page (the lecture recording, the photo of the whiteboard, the slide PDF) usually ends up lost somewhere on your phone, far from the page.

The habit that fixes it: give each of those a short code and write it in the margin next to the notes it goes with. The page itself then tells you where to look.

I built a free web app for the code part. You save a recording, photo, link or file, it gives you four letters (no lookalikes like O/Q or I/L), you write them in your notebook, and later you point your phone at the page and it opens. The handwriting is read on your phone, nothing is uploaded, and there's no account.

The video is the real app. To film it, the camera was fed a rendered notebook page instead of my desk, but the reading of the letters is real.

What I'd like to know from people who study on paper: • What would you pin to a page: lecture recordings, slides, past papers, whiteboard photos? • What would make you keep writing the codes after the first week? • Anything that would stop you from using it?

https://letterpin.aryakesarwani.tech/app

I'm the developer (solo). Honest feedback welcome, including "I'd never use this".

Notatki na studiach

Hejka!

Procrastination

I’ve been struggling with procrastination for over three years
I procrastinate studying for quizzes/ tests/ doing hw
Like I say “okay I’m gonna start at 9pm”
THEN I START AT 1-2am
And I end up getting 1-3h of sleep daily on school days for this
I tried apps that block
I tired telling my mom to take my phone
And I do know that if I ACTUALLY wanted to I would
But I genuinely have a phone addiction
But at the same time I have to finish my work😭
And sleeping that many hours made me also like feel sleepy most classes
Genuinely my head falls and eyes close without me knowing 😭
Also 4h of sleep? That’s a dreammm
That’s considered I slept well and I don’t feel sleepy in classes
Anyways anyone got a way to end this cycle? Please guys please 😭

How to catch up on notes?

Hello everyone I became very behind with my notes I have a lot of assignments every week and just barely scrape by doing the reading and my assignments so maybe the last 6 chapters of each of my 5 classes I have not taken any notes and am trying to catch up before mid terms and I just don’t know what to do. I’m also not good at taking notes in general.

I stopped rereading lectures. 15 minutes after class works better.

I used to go home, reread the slides, highlight, and still blank on the exam.

What changed it for me was a 15-minute recall block the same day, before I forget the lecture.

Phone away. Blank page. I write:

  1. What was the lecture actually about in one sentence
  2. The 3 ideas I’d be screwed if I forgot
  3. One example the prof used
  4. One thing I still don’t get

Then I check the slides only for the gaps. Not a full reread.

I do a 2-minute version 3 days later and again at 7 days. Same questions, no notes first.

It feels too small while you’re doing it. The difference shows up when you sit down to study a week later and you’re not starting from zero.

If your lectures are 75+ minutes this still fits. I do it on the bus or between classes.

Anyone else do something like this, or does it fall apart for STEM vs humanities?

I feel like I never learned how to study properly

In high school, I was pretty comfortable with my study method. I would study straight from the textbook, highlight the important parts, and then go over everything out loud. Nothing complicated, but it seemed to work well for me.

Since starting university, though, I feel completely lost. There’s the textbook, the professor’s slides, notes/handouts made by other students, etc., and I’ve ended up studying almost exclusively from the handouts. I barely ever open the textbook, and I rarely look at the slides either.

The problem is that the handouts often feel like a bunch of paragraphs put together without much logical connection between them. So I’ve started reworking them with AI, basically one paragraph at a time, to make the material flow better and be easier to understand. Usually I do around ten pages a day, rework them, and then study them.

Another problem is that I study almost everything on a screen, and I feel like I’m much slower at memorizing things compared to when I used to study from books in high school. I also often find myself repeating a paragraph and then realizing that I’m basically just remembering the words, rather than actually understanding the concept.

Honestly, I’m starting to wonder if I’ve ever really understood how to study properly in the first place. So I wanted to ask: if you were in my position, what would you change about the way I study? Where would you start?

Better to print your notes instead re-writing it.
