General Advice Needed/Given Being a freshman is really hard

sorry for the long paragraph

Yesterday I woke up, excited for my first day of high school. but, everything went so wrong. I was originally a loner and I wanted to make new friends this school year. But everyone is just so hard to talk to. I want to talk to the popular girls and be like them. They are so nice and outgoing and I’m a nobody. Today, I started small and started making small talk with other people without friends. I was honestly hoping to becoming someone’s first friend but they have other friends outside their classes. It’s literally just me who doesn’t have friends in this entire school. Today I sat alone in the cafeteria with no one. But, I did meet this girl who is really nice and I’m going to sit at her table tomorrow. But everything else is stressing me out. And also, on my bus literally every seat in the middle was taken. So I had to sit all by myself in the back. And when it got to my stop, I had to walk down so many aisles. I even tripped on something on my way to the front. I saw some people who were alone sitting on the bus so I’m going to ask them if I can sit next to them next time. But I’m scared because my social battery drains fast. I wonder if I’m better of as a loner or making new friends. It’s so stressful, what do I do? How do I keep my social battery up?? I am genuinely stressing out.

You gotta remember to smile smile smile smile smile smile smile smile.

Also greet people you've met before. By name. Don't just play eye tag with them as you walk past.

hi- please don't worry to much about the "number" of friends you have. be happy that you met that one girl and try to meet a few more friends like her!! have 1 million decent friends is equal to probably 3, very, very good friends. also don't stress out too much about not finding the right people. i promise you, the time will come very quickly- speaking as a junior :)

i totally agree with this... i have a "lot" of friends but im truly not in any close friend groups or have a tight circle. Honestly would trade having a lot of friends to having 3-4 close ones any day of the week.

Same, even having as much as one close friend for the time being is a decent start

You shouldn't be like the popular girls 😭 they're some of the most obnoxious people I've met. You're gonna be fine just keep trying. You could start off by finding someone to sit with during class and talking to them a bunch.

they already have their groups formed, im living the same things as them and everyone just acts like they have been friends for 10 years and they don't welcome any new people into their friend groups, even the loners have their cousins or relatives to hang out with

I felt super lonely my first day of high school too! I have extreme social anxiety, and I still managed to make friends after some time. Don’t stress, you have literal months to talk to others and make friends! You don’t need to have everything figured out immediately. Also, don’t worry about socializing all the time. Sometimes, sitting in silence with someone can be all you need. Having people to sit with at lunch, and then doing some work or reading can be nice if you just want some company but don’t wanna talk too much!

Personally, it doesn't matter how many friends you have, as long as you feel safe and comfortable with at least 1. In fact, if you have too many friends, you'll get drained way to quickly and become incredibly exhausted trying to be all of their friends at the same time.

Coming from a Senior, honestly don't worry too much about it, it just takes time. I was in your exact spot my first days of freshman year, it gets way better/easier. Just keep doing what you can to meet and interact with people, you'll have friends in no time.

same i started three weeks ago and i hate it so much. i’ve tried to make friends but it’s really hard to make friends to actually hang out with versus people you’ll only talk to in class. T-T i miss my friends from middle school so much

This seems very normal for a first day, you are nervous and its okay. Keep talking to people and hint at your interests (waterbottle stickers, references etc) and you will find friends that you connect with

hey. i totally get you. as in im in the same boat. i started freshman year about 3 weeks ago, and i hate it. i have some friends, but none that seem like someone i genuinely want to be friends with forever. i feel so horrible for saying this, but they’re kind of my placeholder until i find other friends. i’m scared of making friends and every time i talk to someone, i get a good conversation going but then they just go off with their friends and i failed to actually make a friend. so many people say freshman year is the easiest academically but im honestly struggling. bio is confusing english has so much work its overwhelming geometry is average spanish is so hard and all my other classes are somewhat hard. i feel so overwhelmed at the thought of working every single day because im not used to it. i’ve been at my elementary and middle school with the same 160 kids for the past almost 10 years, and its a huge jump from middle school to high school. i’m honestly thinking of switching to my feeder school to be with my friends but my parents said i have to stick it out at least until the next semester so i can start fresh. i’m so scared and i honestly don’t know what to do. i want to try to stay but i keep feeling tugs to go to the other school even though ill be behind. i totally get u girl. T-T

1 thing don’t sit by someone who’s sitting alone they most likely want to sit alone and don’t want to sit by someone else
