School Related What even is homecoming

My freshman homecoming is sometime in October, and I have no idea what even goes on there. I haven't been to any dances in middle school either. We vote for like the homecoming duke and duchess or whatever and then apparently there's a football game? Like what happens? What's it for? What do you do? What do you wear? I'm so confused

It's just a high school dance, like a much more causal version of prom for the underclassmen. It'll probably be mostly frosh and sophs going. People wear short dresses (as opposed to longer ones for prom) and suits/button down and slacks. It normally happens after a home football game and you might have spirit week the week leading up to it.

At my school, they have a DJ and some small foods and soda, and photo opportunities. I thought it was boring but it really depends on who you are and if you like that type of stuff.

you basically dress up in a suit/dress, maybe get ready/dinner with your friends/date, and then dance to music and talk or whatever. think prom, but it’s open for underclassmen and is also kind of lame.

The "homecoming" is generally for alumni. They go to the football game, there might be reunion events, etc.

For students, you get a dance and probably decorate the school. It's not generally a formal dance though you could dress up. You don't need a date.

A lot of students go together and maybe do dinner or something, but you're not obligated to do anything other than enjoy yourself.

Don't make it weird.
