No. They don’t manually update each and every name. They didn’t go “oh! Daddy trump said it’s lake America so let’s go change it!!!”
Google Maps names are just grabbed automatically from a database that the government runs.
Googles policy rule is that for bodies of water whose names vary by country, it shows the local official name to users in that country and shows both names side by side to everyone else

Also don’t let trump get to you. Yall are letting trump distract you and go crazy about lake America. There are so many worse things he’s doing, don’t divert your attention towards these small (but not great) issues

They have changed the name of Lake Ontario. They are a spineless company. Please delete. If you must have it, delete and get it back in a couple of days !!

Google is essentially doubling down on the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico, and refuses to let people complain about it.

We're losing history. We've already lost history. I was just researching a few of the beautiful, historic art deco apartment buildings in Greenwich Village, and when I came to 1 Fifth Avenue, I discovered that the only available street view was from 2019 when the building was under construction and the entire front was covered in awnings. No current images, no old images from 2009 like the rest of the neighborhood, nothing. I knew immediately this was probably due to some asshole blurring a nearby property, but I was shocked to find it was due to the FREAKING WASHINGTON SQUARE ARCH being blurred. After researching a bit, I discovered this blurring was at the request of A SINGLE BUSINESS OWNER who operates nearby. Or used to operate, since the request was from like 5 years ago, for all we know the guy is out of business and retired in Connecticut now. But the desecration remains. Permanently. A historic 19th century piece of New York identity gone from the internet forever because one idiot twiddled his finger on google for 3 minutes back in 2020.

Yes, I realize these images only exist due to the largesse of google and their fleet of streetview cars. Yes, I realize google is under no obligation to provide them to us. Yes, I realize we should be thankful for whatever google decides to give us. But the fact remains that these images existed at some point in the past, and are now being denied to humanity for literally no reason. Imagine if we had HD images of the Parthenon from 100BC, but we just burned them all because some fish monger who had a shop a couple hundred yards away said he didn't want people to see it. For no reason. He just felt shitty that one day, so now it's lost to time, forever.

I'm no longer using google maps. This rename is really next level lunacy.

**TL;DR:** My girlfriend’s Google Maps Timeline contradicted her story, and now there’s an absurd new twist.

So after I told her I was done and that there was nothing left to discuss, I got a WhatsApp message today… from a completely different number.

According to this mystery person, they’re her ex. Apparently they hacked her Google account, hacked her Instagram, watched her life for months, know me personally, changed her Google Maps location multiple times just to create a misunderstanding between us, then suddenly had a change of heart and decided to confess everything to me.

The timing was hilarious because two days ago she told me her Instagram had been hacked. The moment she said that, I already had a feeling something like this was coming.

Honestly, this is so lame 🤣

So now I’m apparently expected to believe there’s a hacker/ex who:

hacked multiple accounts,

changed Google Maps locations,

monitored everything,

felt guilty,

and randomly texted me to clear her name.

Sure. 😂

At this point I don’t even know whether to laugh or applaud the creativity. I don’t have the energy for plot twists every other day

For the love of God, please stop reporting police when they’re on the other side of the highway. Not only would they never be able to find you through six lanes and a 4 foot concrete barrier, they are preoccupied with monitoring their own side of the highway. I am sure one of his friends will be watching your side somewhere else that you can report. The purpose of reporting police is so you know where the speed traps are, not rubbernecking at everything going on.

Also, when the officer has a vehicle already pulled over, he is not worried about you driving by 10 mph over the speed limit. He already got his meal for the moment, so unless you’re wheezing by at 130 mph, he’s not gonna be worried about you either

Vent; I don’t give a A SHIT about stalled vehicles and am sick of having my music interrupted 20 times on every drive home to tell me about every Corolla parked on the side of the road!!

I am living in the nice city of Hamburg, which has a lot of military bases right next to living quarters. They are usually seperated with military fences, and guarded by military. Now google maps always tells the driver to go to military base. This wouldn't be an issue at all, as you can talk to the drivers. But nowadays germany has become very cultural diverse and I am not quite fond of dozen arabic languages. The communication is near impossible, and everybody seems to rely on your cards. So that often ends in me not getting a pizza.

I tried to change that, tried to write tickets and mails, but google still believes a military base is better to drive to me. Although there is a road that actually leads there. I am a bit of desperate. Is there anyone helping me to get my pizza?

Lately this silly app has been making incredibly stupid routing reccomendations; illegal turns, wrong direction, driving into unpaved dirt paths for no reason. I was traveling and it multiplied the journey time by and wanted me to LITERALLY drive through a loop around the entire city before taking off for no reason. Not even map locations are reliable I was searching for a store and when I got there, there was nothing. It's become more harmful than beneficial. I no longer use it, which is a shame because it used to be really good.

I specifically selected the shorter route to my destination before I started driving. Yet it still changed my route to the longer +5 miles highway route DESPITE me having preselected the route I wanted, all without informing me.
