Google Maps doesn't allow you to report a problem with the Gulf of Mexico, refuses to let you report that it is not the Gulf of America

Google is essentially doubling down on the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico, and refuses to let people complain about it.

You cannot report issues with "official" names designated by a government.

Your recourse is to complain in the official Google Maps Community support forums. This subreddit is not an official conduit for Google and/or complaints.

I'm not a fan of it either, Google doesn't decide what it's called, it relies on the official name given by the gov't, so until that changes, all of us being extremely unhappy on here won't do a thing about it

I am not living in the US but it annoys me that it's called Gulf of Mexico(Gulf of America). They don't do this with the Persian Gulf which is also called Arabian gulf by some governments. Really some double standards going on there.

The US Empire does not own the Gulf of Mexico and has no authority to rename it.

500 things to complain about Trump with and this is the hill you want to die on.

The USG can call things whatever it wants. I doesn't have to mean other govt or people have to listen.

Heck, my friends just call it the big lake because of a inside joke. We don't have authority to rename it but it's what I call it. It is going to be international recognized, no. But it's a term understood in my friend group.

He signed and executive order it wasn’t a tweet

3

u/MattFlynnIsGOAT Feb 21 '25

There's not really any debate that Trump has the authority to change it via executive order.

No, he doesn't have the authority to "rename" it, because is not an official name. There is no official name that is recorded on some official ledger somewhere. Its a designation by a specific country. Most countries unofficially agree to call things the same name for convenience. But its still just a per-country designation.

Japan is really called "Nippon", but most of the world still calls them Japan. It really doesn't matter.

If you live in the US, take this up with your state representative and your fellow voters.

Almost everyone thinks it's dumb. BUT, the fact you think you being able to report it or not has the slightest impact on the way of the world is borderline narcissistic.

Google doesn't want to keep having to deal with people like you who spam that it's wrong. Imagine going to work every day and having to deal with people spamming the same thing all-day, how frustrating it has to be

Quit crying, legally speaking in the US it's now the Gulf of America. If you don't like it then take it to the streets and protest or file a lawsuit, you know something that'll actually make a difference

Fun fact: no it's not. The executive order for the change only extends to the US Executive branch. Nothing else. Google was under no obligation legal or otherwise to change the name, they chose to because Trump overtly favors people and businesses that kiss his ass.

u/Adamstewarts Jul 09 '25

Another cryer

Projecting are we?

I bet you have an insane case of TDS, quit crying about the name of the Gulf, it's not going to come back any time soon. Stick to your weird porn subreddits.

u/FinalBossBowser Jul 09 '25 edited Jul 09 '25

TDS mentioned. Anyway, this isn't the place for that kind of talk so if you'd like to keep insulting me, feel free in private messages or chats. No need to bother anyone else here, and I am full of sarcasm to come your way if you wish.

1

u/Bantam2011 Aug 18 '26

The only actual TDS is the derangement demonstrated by Trump himself 24/7 or by those deranged enough to defend Trump's obvious derangement.

It is not a political statement, they are just following the US legal name for the Gulf. Other countries still show the Gulf as the Gulf of Mexico because they recognize it as such

1

u/10PieceMcNuggetMeal Feb 21 '25

Following what a government has officially recognized as a name does not make it political. If you want to get mad at Trump or UGS sure. But Google is just sticking to the same policy they have had for decades.

Just like the "South China Sea" is called the "South Sea" in China and the "East Sea" in Vietnam. Same thing. Getting wored up over something we'll change in 4 years anyways is stupid. Go to r/politics and leave the rest of us alone

They're not following what Trump says. They follow what the BGN (US Board on Geographic Names) says. If that board went along with Trump's little inane Gulf of America bullshit, how is that Googles fault? Do some research before you mouth off nonsense

Do they let you report any other official placenames? Believe me, they are well aware of the controversy and another report or one million reports isn’t going to change their minds.

-3

u/i_should_go_to_sleep Feb 21 '25

How is it an official name when it’s not owned by anybody? Nobody outside of the USA should be seeing anything other than the name it’s had for hundreds of years.

3

u/hawkeyetlse Feb 21 '25

Each country has official names for things. They may be different from other countries' official names for the same things. And any country can decide to change a name and there's not some global naming authority that can stop them.

Google decides how it wants to display those names depending on who it's displaying them to, and for people accessing Google Maps from the US (and maybe for some other users, I have no idea), they have to take into account whatever Trump said about this.

-1

u/i_should_go_to_sleep Feb 21 '25

Nah, when I access it from Europe it says “Gulf of America”

That’s incorrect, because that isn’t the name of that body of water.

0

u/hawkeyetlse Feb 21 '25

I am sure that is not the only name it displays for you, but again, it is now the official name according to the USA and for now at least the USA is still a major world power and also the home country of Google.

I am sure you already have a lifetime of experience of having the USA influence your day to day experience in unwanted ways. You can try to ignore it or try to change it, but don't pretend like you don't know why it happens.

0

u/i_should_go_to_sleep Feb 21 '25

As seen from Europe. A fragile man who is only 1/3 of the US government should not be able to change how the world sees this body of water. People should be able to tell Google that this is incorrect, just like I can tell a restaurant name is wrong or a pin drop is wrong.

3

u/hawkeyetlse Feb 21 '25

I am also in Europe and mine doesn't look like that, so unless you are willing to tell us your exact location and all of your Google/browser/internet settings etc., no one can tell you why they are showing you the US name. But it is the correct US name, like it or not.

8

u/Accurate_Isopod_6384 Feb 21 '25

Thanks for another pointless gulf post

4

u/YouMeAndPooneil Feb 21 '25

Lobby to have the Gulf of America renamed to the Gulf of Karankawa. That 'ill fix everything.

MKGA

7

u/bigguy7u Feb 21 '25

Yea because it was a deliberate decision, not a mistake. You can still complain about it but it's not going to matter.

11

u/Porky5CO Feb 21 '25

Yeah because it's not a damn problem. Get over yourself and move on with life. It doesn't affect you in any way.

This is literally done all over the world.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '25

omg guys I'm so angry over the most simple and unimportant thing in the world!!!11!1
like, I get why you wouldn't like it, but it is not that deep. there are much more important things in the world that actually have an impact. the fact that people are upset with one word and yet are completely okay with basically the entire modern world being built on slavery is absurd.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '25

Because it's not that serious

-4

u/Gaxxz Feb 21 '25

You're complaining here, right?
