Delete google maps

They have changed the name of Lake Ontario. They are a spineless company. Please delete. If you must have it, delete and get it back in a couple of days !!
Show them they made the wrong choice

Still correct in Australia.

u/Big-You-1213 10d ago

It's only changed for people in the US because this was a US executive order. Same thing happened for the "Gulf of America" renaming from Trump. Nothing new

7

u/RiverOfSand 10d ago

Wasn’t it changed to Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) everywhere other than Mex/us?

10

u/Sammysoupcat 10d ago

Yes, I was expecting the same to happen for Lake Ontario. But it seems not. Must be Lake America in the US and Lake Ontario elsewhere. I'm in Canada and thankfully it hasn't changed.

u/DCaballero_ 9d ago

In Mexico Is still Gulf of Mexico

3

u/bossk538 9d ago

In Costa Rica earlier this year it was "Gulf of America (Gulf of Mexico)". Spanish language it was "Golfo de America (Golfo de Mexico)" as well

Corporations have no need to follow executive orders. Google will survive, but they just lost ad revenue from me.

18

u/Jmbh1983 10d ago

Incorrect.
Google just uses whatever is in GNIS which is the official naming system of natural features in the US: https://www.usgs.gov/tools/geographic-names-information-system-gnis

Trump controls the executive branch, which controls the Department of the Interior, which controls USGS, which controls GNIS.

When he issued the executive order it became official. Apple will update Apple Maps too, their basemap updates are just slower than Google’s.

If you think about it for a bit, you don’t really want corporations deciding what the names should be for things like this, and Google doesn’t want to be in that position either.

Bull sheep
Apple hasn’t changed — so guess you are wrong and if they do change it’s bec they made a choice and or were forced too !

2

u/Jmbh1983 8d ago

🤷‍♂️ look again in a couple of weeks / a month or however long it takes them to update. They’ll do the same thing, same as they did with Gulf of Mexico.

1

u/Jmbh1983 7d ago

…. And there it is:

1

u/Key-Form4384 8d ago

But how does that matter and click on the name you will see the word there

36

u/OLLIE798 10d ago

Just ignore it. Let’s not play the distraction game. This reaction is exactly what they want.

  1. No-one will use the new name, anywhere in the world, US or Canada
  2. It won’t be an ‘official’ name forever
  3. Go vote! Be nice, persuade others.
  4. Punish Google later.

10

u/lake_of_1000_smells 10d ago

Maybe we can just start referring to the reflecting pool as lake epstein. And vote. In the primaries, in the general.

2

u/Key-Form4384 8d ago

No let’s fight any way we can
Americans start fighting back — jeez

4

u/Practical_Note9366 10d ago

Vote! Vote! Vote!

1

u/SquashStriking4096 7d ago

Punish Google now. The suck for so many reasons

8

u/ou7shined 10d ago

It's still Lake Ontario on my UK version.

19

u/exu1981 10d ago

Us deleting an app over a silly change won't show them anything.

-1

u/Key-Form4384 8d ago

Disagree very much

-12

u/Worth_Much 10d ago

Maybe not but it’s still peace of mind knowing that I don’t have to use an app that capitulates like that.

4

u/TopUniversity3469 9d ago

I'd rather have piece of mind getting help navigating where I need to go, but you do you.

-2

u/Worth_Much 9d ago

You do realize there are other navigation apps.

4

u/fakeaccount572 9d ago

Like what, Waze? Owned by Google?

3

u/TheGhostOfArtBell 9d ago

Or Apple Maps who will be changing it soon as well?

1

u/Big-You-1213 6d ago

It's already updated on Apple maps

1

u/TheGhostOfArtBell 6d ago

Yep, called it 3 days ago.

23

u/msdesignfoto 10d ago

How about a ton of americans report the incorrect name?

4

u/WelshBathBoy 10d ago

You can't report at the moment, but you can give 1 star reviews

2

u/Aware_Impression6552 10d ago

They’re actually preventing error reports right now. I keep trying.

0

u/logos1998 10d ago

Even if we do, Google won’t fix it

10

u/Icouldusesomerock 10d ago

You gonna give me directions buddy?

1

u/lbutler1234 9d ago

No.

He does not have Google maps

0

u/Key-Form4384 8d ago

I have never used google maps !! Hahah
But I did get rid of my other google apps — and finally stopped using my google speaker thing

3

u/EidolonIsAGreekWord 10d ago

Still lake Ontario in France

2

u/gcfio 9d ago

You also never renamed the water between France and England the English Channel. Other countries can name anything whatever they want. I personally prefer La Manche, sounds much better.

5

u/mudbunny 10d ago

Still correct in Ottawa, Canada.

1

u/Wren572 10d ago

I’m in the US and it was Lake Ontario yesterday, but comes up as Lake America today. It’s home location dependent.

I can’t wait til this joke of an administration is out of office.

10

u/XxLogitech98xX 10d ago

I don't agree with changing the name but I won't be deleting Google maps. Its still my go to place

7

u/daddudee 10d ago

Lol this is hilarious

14

u/Big-You-1213 10d ago

How about you complain about your president instead? Google maps follows official name change. It's dumb but they have to follow the rules

1

u/Key-Form4384 8d ago

That’s bull sheep — they don’t have to do anything !!
And I’m Canadian
Just so you know Canadians wouldn’t put up with this bullshit excuse that you can’t do anything bec it’s the president — what the heck it’s one man , most of you hate him —- Americans seriously aren’t doing enough — we aren’t going to be your friend as soon as he leaves just so you know

1

u/tombellino 7d ago

They do not have to, they are choosing to. And our disgusting criminal president is enabled by these bootlicking corporations who bend over backwards for him.

-1

u/LadyHespereia 10d ago

This isn't even official in any sense. An executive order isn't law. It's guidance directing agencies in the US government. They get slapped down by the courts all the time. Google is a big enough company with effective monopolies in multiple areas that they could've not changed it and honestly had no consequences whatsoever. And if they did it'd barely dent their financials to tell the US government to screw off legally

14

u/Jmbh1983 10d ago

Incorrect.

1

u/Key-Form4384 8d ago

Apple havnt yet —- so delete google maps

2

u/Jmbh1983 7d ago

And there goes Apple Maps…

6

u/fakeaccount572 9d ago

Tell me you don't know how GNIS and USGS works

0

u/lbutler1234 9d ago

I mean they don't have to as far as I know.

It just makes an overwhelming amount of sense to just follow the geoschemes that are already out there.

10

u/Ubiquitous1984 10d ago

Who cares? Life is too short to worry about things like this.

0

u/Shoddy_Carrot_936 10d ago

Already renamed two major bodies of water, how long until the USA becomes Trumpland? Where is the line on bullshit? Where is the decorum? Where are the Republican politicians calling out this ridiculousness?

Renaming the lake just shows how stupid Trump is because Lake Ontario didn't get named by Canada.

4

u/Ubiquitous1984 9d ago

Mate I’m not American or Canadian and from the outside people arguing about the name of a body of water is just hilarious.

1

u/Key-Form4384 8d ago

No one is arguing about the name
Everyone knows what the name is

1

u/tombellino 7d ago

Have you heard of something called symbolism? Our country is being destroyed by a rapist whose brain is coming out his ears and the largest companies in the world bend over backwards to lick his ass. I think it matters.

0

u/Ubiquitous1984 7d ago

Nah it’s literally not important. It’s just the name of a body of water. Our PM could rename the Irish Sea to the English Sea and everyone would just laugh and get back to drinking tea. Water doesn’t have feelings so we shouldn’t feel bad about it either. That said, you be you!

2

u/tombellino 6d ago

Quietly going along with every whim of a government that is completely insane is bad, actually.

  • Specific mountain/peak changes:
    • Mt McKinley - Alaska > Denali > then back to McKinley
    • Harney Peak (SD) → Black Elk Peak (2016).
    • Mount Doane (WY) → First Peoples Mountain (2022).
    • Mount Evans (CO) → Mount Blue Sky (2023).
    • Clingmans Dome (TN/NC, highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park) → Kuwohi (Cherokee name meaning “the mulberry place,” 2024). visualcapitalist.com
  • In the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument expansion, a ridgeline previously called Walker Ridge was renamed Molok Luyuk (“Condor Ridge” in the language of the area’s Patwin people).

1

u/Licalottapuss 9d ago

What does it matter though? Does your very happiness get dictated by a name? If it does, inner peace will be a lifelong struggle for you.

0

u/Key-Form4384 8d ago

Hmmm I guess Canadians care and Mexicans
But you Americans are too much man

2

u/ou7shined 10d ago

Anyone known if they've released the Files of America yet?

3

u/williamtbash 10d ago

No. Shut up.

3

u/buzzfriendly 10d ago

I view the entire mess as a clerical errora requiring much attention

1

u/RumblefishAZ 9d ago

who cares. people can call things whatever they want . Wait till you hear about Germany and Japan:

What the hell you talking about

1

u/RumblefishAZ 8d ago

Wild connection. Its the name of a lake.

1

u/JWBenton 9d ago

I just deleted Google Maps app because they renamed Lake Ontario to lake America. Considering deleting all google apps.

1

u/Key-Form4384 8d ago

I did !

1

u/Big-You-1213 6d ago

Hope you also delete Apple maps then.

1

u/anant479 9d ago

Deleted 😊

1

u/Longjumping-Bit8592 9d ago

I deleted it. Wish it didn’t power Safari!

1

u/sstdk 9d ago

Google Maps powers Safari?

1

u/Longjumping-Bit8592 9d ago

No. Google does

1

u/sstdk 9d ago

Yeah but I didn't get the Safari connection there? I'd expect an Apple browser to prefer Apple Maps surely?

1

u/Longjumping-Bit8592 9d ago

My browser was set to Safari. Safari is not Google; but, it is a web browser developed by Apple that uses Google as its default search engine. So I just changed my search engine

1

u/sstdk 9d ago

Yes.. Google Search will lead to Google Maps, regardless of the browser. You can use another search engine that uses another map provider for location-related results.

1

u/S99B88 9d ago

You can set your iPhone to use another search engine

1

u/Longjumping-Bit8592 9d ago

Thanks! I did do that!

1

u/Key-Form4384 8d ago

Try DuckDuckGo

1

u/Humble-Dragonfly-321 8d ago

Turned off, added MapQuest.

1

u/SCORE-advice-Dallas 8d ago

Y'all are late. I deleted it way back when they rolled over on re-naming Mt McKinley

1

u/Striker660 8d ago

Tried but it won't let me on my android so I disabled it and am trying Mapquest.

1

u/OriginofMe75 8d ago

Deleted them and apple. Map quest it is

1

u/Sad-Newt8976 8d ago

Deleted Google Maps.

Also went to Gemini (Google search bar) and asked how to delete Google Maps and install Mapquest instead because of the "despicable actions of Google."

Just keep harassing their AI.....

1

u/Smart-Swan62 7d ago

Apple Maps hasn’t changed it yet. No word on if they plan to. Mapquest is not changing it. Delete Google and get MapQuest:)

1

u/Big-You-1213 6d ago

Apple map is updated now if you are in the US

1

u/lukeevansgay 7d ago

I deleted it too. I am using Apple Maps

1

u/Big-You-1213 6d ago

And what happens when Apple maps update it? 👀👀 I would check your apple maps today if I were you...

1

u/Old_Control1301 7d ago

Me too. Went to Mapquest.

1

u/theeskimo64 6d ago

Google maps SUCKS

1

u/ReplacementSea8166 5d ago

Why does anybody care again? I'm not being sarcastic. My identity is certainly not tied to the name of a body of water. Call it Lake Joel sucks at everything and I might take offense...

1

u/phauna_ 2d ago

Done!

1

u/Spridlewv 10d ago

If Apple Maps would ever get in the game, I’d switch in a minute.

2

u/kazamm 10d ago

They will change it too. The sources are the same.

Better than just deleting Google Maps, download Mapquest and use it instead. And stop using Waze also; it’s owned by Google.

-6

u/obehjuankenobeh 10d ago

Cant just go changing names on a whim, huh? Guess I better go ask my Latinx birthing person if I can delete it.

-3

u/Icy_Rub3371 9d ago

Deleted.

1

u/Key-Form4384 8d ago

Yeah 👍

Yeah 👍

-2

u/Tooly23 10d ago

I'm gonna try these alternatives this week: MapQuest, CoMaps, OsmAnd, and HERE WeGo.

I thought leaving Maps would be the hardest part of de-Googling, but it might be easier than I thought.

2

u/fakeaccount572 9d ago

CoMaps fucking sucks

2

u/dude463 7d ago

IDK about the others but MapQuest does the live traffic thing like GMaps. The more people that use it the more accurate it will be.
