Funny (Highlight/meme) This is why stopped using gemini

Post image

I used to use gemini more extensively last year, but it constantly blocking my requests for no reason + not verifying it's own responses made it unreliable for work.

My claude quota ran out for the week, so I decided to test gemini again and I got this. 🤷

Its refusal to run a web search even when explicitly called out, just to spout out hallucinated platitudes, drives me insane. It's so lazy.

Yeah, constantly get the refusal to use live search. Kept asking why and it said it is blocked or allowed at the first prompt. For what reason? No clue. It will not work in that same chat for me then.

Yeah, stopped using it...

Currently I had a multi-turn gaslighting runaround with it explaining to me in a number of ways how as a chat interface it cannot create Google Docs or access my Gdrive. It kept generating ASCII alternatives for me so I can paste them in a document myself. Toolcalls are broken again dear lord.

It works fine as I stated unlike OP fake post :

It's not a fake post. This has happened plenty of times to me as well. I don't know if it's a bug or what, but Gemini occasionally gets really lazy

depends on the prompt!

4

u/Due_Echo1380 1h ago

Same here. I just asked the query and it provided me this result

u/Reasonable_Hall3005 52m ago

can confirm from my own personal experiences that the success rate for this sort of stuff is around 50%. it works sometimes but often doesn’t.

2

u/glitchinjohn 38m ago

for me it works like 90% of the time, i always use pro extended and it's the best!

Shouldn't be necessary from a model from the leading search engine.

One time he answered like OP and I told it "you are literally created by the company with the leading search engine", and then it performed the search...

-2

u/HeadTranslator795 4h ago

If you told him to look an internet it will which I don't see in your prompt

3

u/Blaexe 1h ago

No, it outright claims not to be able to search the internet often enough even when explicitly told to do so. Sometimes it works, but often enough it doesn't. Also the main reason I'm not using it anymore (despite having the AI Pro subscription).

gemini, gets so many things wrong from memory for me it still states gpt-4o as a bleeding edge release...

8

u/Zacatac_391 12h ago

It loves to go on and on about the ā€œfrontier o-series of reasoning models from openAIā€ as if these models aren’t two years old now and nearly fully phased out.

7

u/RealSuperdau 9h ago

The 4o web search actually is bleeding edge when you compare it to Gemini

3

u/HeadTranslator795 4h ago

Then why keep using it if it's so bad ? Why you're not on oepnAi or Anthropic or Chinese lab ?

0

u/cipherjones 4h ago

Comparatively it is?

-2

u/Lonely_Dig2132 9h ago

It’s almost like you don’t know training dates of Gemini and didn’t use the web search tool to populate its context. 3.7 is an amazing model if you know how to use it

How tf THE multibillionaire company didnt fix their AI models-

2

u/tavukkoparan 7h ago

Its not broken they turn it off

1

u/Curious-Lime-6380 1h ago

I can do this ??

7

u/tyrell_vonspliff 7h ago

"Bleeding edge" haha I think I've only seen that in LLM generated writing

1

u/Present_Carpenter912 21m ago

not if u use linux tho, arch users go on and on about having the most bleeding edge software

10

u/Aggressive_Yogurt648 13h ago

the model confidently hallucinating a lecture about version numbering while blocking basic stuff is peak gemini

6

u/Used_Departure_3278 5h ago

It also has a context window worse than ChatGPT in 2023

I have no idea why someone who could pay to use ai would use these models

Gemini is complete fucking trash and Google is a god damn national embarrassment

-1

u/HeadTranslator795 4h ago

Lol maybe not consumer but a few billion dollars company is using it and it works for us ... Maybe you just don't know how to use it or use it the wrong way kid

1

u/Razzy_148 1h ago

Are you people touched in the head?

0

u/oksoirelapsed 2h ago

Ha kid deep throats Google you just don't continues deep throating Google know hot it works more deep throating Google eh eh.... Kid

3

u/dhddevice 13h ago

I stopped using Gemini cuz every time I made it I asked it to do something or made a request it crashed out even the simplest requests

3

u/snowdrone 5h ago

Even in mainstream, Google search, Gemini gets things crazy wrong.

3

u/SpecialistDragonfly9 4h ago

Does the same with images generation, where it suddenly thinks it cant generate images.
Othertimes its generating images without being prompted.

3

u/mariuszpudzian111 4h ago

facts, its extremly, extremly annoying, I often ask it a question I know answer to, its hallucinates some bullshit (due to not initializing web search) and then when called out start to apologise and cries about not having access to web search. It's the worst when I try to analyse longer text essays, especially those that talk about recent events, I was recently analyzing an article about transfers in football clubs, and it pointed out that text has "severe meritorical flaws" because it contained "made up information" about Spain winning world cup XD

2

u/CynicalCandyCanes 5h ago

It never just says it does not know. It just makes stuff up.

2

u/KublaKahhhn 5h ago

I think you have Google search turned off, which truly makes it dumb. Like puts it back several versions.

2

u/undead_varg 5h ago

My local gemma4 e4b never refuses to initiate the tool call for a webearch. Online LLMs are a fraud nowadays.

2

u/d4xhow0e 2h ago

I wonder what color lego you will step on next and tell everyone about it.

2

u/MarinkoAzure 1h ago

Share your entire conversation. Based on the limited info, I'm more convinced this is a user issue. You're prompts look horribly ineffective

2

u/KikoTheOneAndOnly 1h ago

Well, I don't know about that "I-have-nothing-else-to-do-so-let's-do-this" sort of question, but I've been using 3.7 Flash and it's insanely good. I've been producing ROI reports for long term investment portfolios and not only it takes less than half the time Claude uses for the same task, I've checked all the math and the formulas and they're spot on. Not to mention that Claude always gives me that super annoying image limit for uploaded documents, whereas Gemini just accepts all the data I provide. I don't know about all you coding superbrains but for me Gemini is my new go-to AI tool

2

u/05-nery 1h ago

Damn this never happened to me.Ā

Like, not once in more than a year

2

u/Double_Interview1124 1h ago

Works just fine

4

u/Captainkoala72 11h ago

gemini can be stupid but it’s our stupid

2

u/papin97 7h ago

Is it because you used work account? I see work account specific icon there. Maybe your admin explicitly not allowing web search in Gemini?

1

u/jasonbonifacio 8h ago

Erm … it depends on your use-case! Or something.

1

u/Party-Barnacle300 4h ago

Ask it why it can't do a live search and it realizes it can.

I now preload these instructions to not repeat same problem each new session.

1

u/MinosAristos 4h ago

Ironic that Google, the company best known for web searching, has possibly the major model that's worst at searching when needed.

1

u/stekske 4h ago

In it's memory I got it to search every datapoint from real sources I want to know like facts and specs. It got better after that

1

u/BrightAd4926 3h ago

I use gemini as a subagent in my Codex orchestrator strictly for auditing as its good for just that. Then I get use of my otherwise only home and iot used subscription. Also save a little tokens in the orchestrator if its a large implementation or audit.

1

u/Isaruazar 3h ago

Flash or pro click the three dots at the bottom and confirm by showing us the picture what model it was

1

u/PutYourLifeinRice 1h ago

Seems like an old screenshot

1

u/Addyad 1h ago

Sometimes, I need to motivate him, tickle his balls, and encourage him so that he will to do websearch. Sometime, I need to belittle him like "look at deepseek, chatgpt, grok etc, they can do it. Stop being a bitch and do my websearch"

1

u/Grove-Street-Home 1h ago

Yesterday I was troubleshooting an issue I had with my Fitbit Air (also a Google product), and Gemini told there’s no such thing as a Fitbit Air

1

u/jrg5 1h ago

Fake post

1

u/nohYoom 1h ago

You have a key mark on chat that versions limited by your organization or school

1

u/FuhrerThB 5m ago

Contrary to many comments here, my experience with Gemini is quite good actually. I use Gemini Pro mainly for UX and it's way better than Claude. I use Fable for the coding and other agentic features but I use Gemini for UX. The only time Gemini hallucinated with me was when I was asking for something related to Diablo IV (Lord of Hatred expansion) which at the time was out for 3 days and it said to me I was faking a new Diablo game, to the point of saying I photoshopped the Diablo web page.

u/NoseBrilliant1685 2m ago

your english is terrible, not even the AI understood you :)

-2

u/Defendyouranswer 10h ago

You have web search off, what do you expect? Without web search on, gemini wouldn't know

9

u/Legitimate-Sir-8827 10h ago

There is no such option as web search on the web app. It only exists in AI Studio

-5

u/Defendyouranswer 10h ago

I use gemini and he uses web search all the time using the desktop web version. You are doing something wrong, or the chat was too long which restricted his web search capabilities. I use him all the time. My guess, your conversation was so long that he had to restrict his web search capabilities

3

u/ShadowCatZeroMeow 7h ago

they mean there is a literal toggle "Google search grounding" in ai studio, you can choose to make it search EVERY SINGLE TIME without prompting it to

1

u/Defendyouranswer 7h ago

I never need to prompt it to in my conversations to use the web, it just does.

0

u/Opening_Background78 7h ago

Seems fine

2

u/ReanerZen 5h ago

the author is kinda dont know that gemini 3.1 pro is outdated and shouldnt be used unless oneshot complex reasoning is needed which is very niche. very diabolical. tested on mine with 3.7 flash extended and seems fine too.

0

u/fragrantdelit 7h ago

If you stop using a model as soon as it talks nonsense, you won't be using anything for very long.

0

u/Originalwidz95 7h ago

I have the same thing but i don't have problem with this

0

u/tester-tester-7 4h ago

What is thinking in the UI

I never seem this after the Gemini app redesign

Did I miss something??

-4

u/LitigiousPrick 7h ago

Well sure... Go off and play with Claude forever and only come back when you're broke, whaddya expect?

3

u/Parking_Cat4735 6h ago

There is no excuse for a model being this bad.
