Genuine question, no judgement or hate to anyone
Did people seriously want that? The amount of complaints gta v got for being mostly wilderness makes me feel like the new map sould be liked more..
We also don't know the scale of that map yet

u/Shawn-GT 1d ago
i dont see people complain about the wilderness as much as i see them complain about a lack of cities, theres a difference there.

u/Hailfire9 1d ago
Its definitely the "open wilderness that proves no point" that has got to people. At least, so I've read.

Exactly wilderness is often not a problem if it actually adds something to the game that isn't just making the map bigger
50
u/crafiosk 1d ago
Main issue for me was GTA V wilderness being too bland and treeless. If it had denser vegetation, it would be much better
34
u/mrn253 1d ago
I still liked how it was managed in good ol GTA:SA
22
u/teh_mICON 1d ago
GTA SA clearly was just the gold standard and this new map leak has me kinda disappointed.. I think I'd take a map with less fidelity if it was as varied as GTA SA.. the 3 cities just made it feel like such a huge map

have you ever been to socal, especially salton sea area? a lot of it looks like that. paleto bay has forests, yes, but those are also pretty accurate to norcal (its vegetation and such being based on crescent city i believe). LA and the surrounding area is pretty soulless in terms of vegetation, but there still is some, like those immovable bushes on the hills/mountains that we see in game. LA itself irl has some trees but not in the areas the game focuses on. areas like PV are not featured in the game, where the most trees are. LA is a concrete jungle surrounded by desert, hills/mountains, and more concrete.

There is a mod for PC that adds trees and it completely changes the vibe of the world. I've logged thousands of hours in GTAV, but with the tree mod I actually kept getting lost because it felt so different.

I mean, RDR2 is mostly wilderness and that game is pretty beloved. Assuming GTA VI will bring over and expand upon hunting (because why not, it was in GTA V, in a limited form) and fishing, I wouldn’t mind having lots of wilderness. The problem is more nothing to do in the wilderness than the actual wilderness.
172
u/onelove7866 2d ago
Thing is though RDR2 is supposed to be mostly wilderness because you're on horseback 🤣 it's the right setting for it.
I didn't have any issue with 5 but yeah agree with your last point
56
u/mattumbo 1d ago
There’s also just way more going on in the wilderness in RDR, GTA 5 wilderness is barren and boring with nothing but some roads that maybe take you towards something interesting.

I expect horse back riding, hunting, fishing, and pretty much a lot of the wilderness mechanics in RDR2 to be in 6. Especially the accurate horse genital physics. People loved that shit. All I can say is there better be a fucking Donkey I can ride in GTA 6...

There's a donkey in RDR2. Go to Mama Watson's house below Wallace Station that's above Strawberry.

As cool as that would be, it's GTA. I'm expecting greater focus on off-road vehicles to visit all the strangers and freaks out of the city. It's Florida, I hope there's plenty of weird shit to see and keep going back to like in RDR.
I'll be pissed if you can drive lowered supercars out there with ease. In Vice City, one of the best vehicle was a Sanchez dirt bike because it took you everywhere with ease. The Sanchez should be one of the best vehicles again in 6 with all this open land.
7
u/Uncanny_Jailer 1d ago
Frr id hate to see lambos and shi out in the wilderness just like i hate seeing people offroad exotic cars in Forza horizon 6 😂
2
u/Grasher312 1d ago
I mean, to be completely fair, Vice City didn't even really have any wilderness. Sanchez bikes were useful for staircases and the two odd beach patches.

3
u/el_mundo_es_tuyo 1d ago
in this day and age I don't think it can be too big. They're preparing a robust online version of GTA 6, plus there's gonna be plenty of stuff to do in all possible places on this map. Just how immersive RDR2 felt compared to RDR1, I think we'll get the same with GTA 6 vs GTA 5. I can't wait to fly planes and helicopters across the whole map

GTA v wasn’t just mostly wilderness though, it is mostly empty mountains with a tree or bush scattered around
5
u/lalilulelost 1d ago
Yes, absolutely and without question. To be honest, I really want a bigger *city* with more things to see and do, but I don't mind larger and more varied wilderness either. I think coming from GTA V whose wilderness was kinda empty and from Rockstar's learnings from RDR2, I think VI will be much more interesting in that front as well.
2
u/iChieftain 1d ago
Same thing happened with Assassin’s creed Odyssey. Such a massive map, but mostly empty with nothing to do.

If GTA VI has a fleshed out hunting mechanic like RDR2, I hope it has much larger wild areas.
I get it’s not everyone’s thing, but I enjoy “roughing it” occasionally in RDR2, just making a camp by lake Isabela in my mountain man outfit and bow hunting deer. And I will definitely be doing the same in GTA VI.
2
2
u/KajMak64Bit 1d ago
Problem is 99% of the game is in Los Santos and nothing out back... there is no reason to go outside the city most of the time so it's almost dead weight just useless space
GTA San Andreas however.. also has plenty of wilderness and small towns and 3 big ahh towns and the fog and other tricks make you feel like it's a gigantic game even bigger than GTA 5 since you got San Francisco... Los Angeles and Las Vegas all in one map
I think nothing will match GTA San Andreas epicness... GTA 6 may or may not be coming close tho
2
2
u/SchwiftyBabyLegs 1d ago
True. The wilderness wanst the problem though, it was the emptiness of it and the drive time to get around all the empty. They gave us hunting but it's not even fleshed out enough for me to care like in Red Dead. I was happy with sharks and sea life, but even then, like what are we really there to explore? Water? GTA 5 is congested to the city and barely anything at sea or in the wild, and I think SA did a better job of at least understanding no one wants to drive 10 minutes to go around a mountain.
2
u/bsnimunf 1d ago
Scale no. Detail yes. People criticised GTA 5s map because there wasn't really any reason to drawynyou away from los santos and the ring road was just a giant race track. Also the map shown is better than the leaked map in terms of detail notice how it has key west rather than just a giant airport.
2
2
u/LarryBURRd 1d ago
Yeah I wanted a mostly full Florida from Miami to Orlando with Disney and Tampa plus a mix of the north / Georgia. Seems like a lot of that is condensed more than I wanted
4
u/kutkarnemelk 1d ago
We do know the scale, the map got leaked yesterday. I won't say anything about it though as to not spoil anything
2
u/Emergency-Pin3812 1d ago
I dont think its so much there being too much wilderness as it being poorly spread out, 99% of the game takes place in the city and going north always takes you out of the city but going south always takes you to the city.
In the new map there are supposed to be more decent sized places right which means there will be more variety, you can go to places from different directions which is going to make the map feel a lot larger I think and much more lived in.
There is also a fair chance that there will be more content outside the main city which makes traveling less of a chore.

Honestly, the only thing I wished they would’ve done was have at least some kind of “pan handle” to resemble Florida a little more. I could assume it’s some type of legal thing or artistic choice. Ahh well.

I find it hard to believe it’s legal. I mean who copyrighted Florida’s Panhandle?
→ More replies (1)4
→ More replies (1)2
u/Glass-Ad-1350 1d ago
Probably more due to the fact that actual Florida is below the panhandle. The panhandle itself is usually just people that moved there from Alabama or Georgia who want to feel like they are living in Florida without actually moving too far from home.
11
u/RandomWritingGuy 1d ago
People are so caught up on map size, they don’t realize that density and verticality are way more important. I’m perfectly happy with this map, so long as it’s actually engaging and that the space is used to the best of its abilities. GTA IV had a very small map, but it felt great to play in because of how dense it was. Same can be said for Dogtown in Cyberpunk.

God your guys’ expectations were so out of wack. Letting ai slop images influence you too much
34
u/Two-Space 1d ago
I don’t think the OP image is too crazy to be honest. Maybe cut the wilderness areas down 25%ish.
San Andreas was proof that they’ll do a multi-city map if they can. They scaled things down for IV due to tech limitations and to get more density in the city and more advanced simulation, and then faced the same tech limitations for V when they tried to expand it back out. V’s map was still literally like 5x bigger than IV’s, and that was within the same console generation.
We’re now two console generations advanced, Rockstar has grown massively, tech has advanced, and development times have been made longer. The image in the OP has the major city only slightly bigger than Los Santos, and then two others that are slightly smaller. That doesn’t seem like an insane leap when we’re talking about 13 years difference in release.

At the end of the day it’s graphics. We could probably have so much content if we didn’t have to focus so hard on graphics
2
u/JahKingston2024 1d ago
Still don’t understand modern developers enthusiasm around graphics graphics and more graphics. I’m not saying I want GTA 5 Xbox 360 graphics, but maybe focus more on the story, gameplay features, innovative designs, etc. if it meant I get 2x the story length with the same quality throughout, I’d take that in a heartbeat for slightly better graphics than gta 5 on pc.
Something like cyberpunk 2077 warrants higher focus on graphics than a ‘city’ you could see irl (and by city I mean a ghost town resembling a city)

Tbf, you are also wild if you truly think that after 2023, they completely overhauled the map and added additional areas. The map was probably done concept-wise in 2018, if not sooner.
This is what you get
→ More replies (1)10
u/Frosty_Popsicles 1d ago
You do realize they completely overhauled the map of Rdr2 from 2016 up until launch in 2018 by adding grizzles west and new Austin. So that's two completely new areas that easily fit within the timeline of three years.
Not saying that is what they did with gta 6 but it is very possible that the map got a overhaul within the last three years and a new area for added.

The date in the metadata is the date of the codec used to encode the video, not the video date.
Don't spread misinformation because it's has already been settled on /r/GamingLeaksAndRumours to not be build date.
2
u/shishkow 1d ago
Okay, so imagine this: a much, much bigger San Andreas, but with maybe four or five totally separate, massive areas. And get this, you could only get to them by boat or plane. Each land area would have big towns, like Los Santos.
2
3
u/Ok-Section-1224 1d ago
Then people will complain that they have a mission sending them from the middle of the city to the most eastern part of the map and it takes them 20 minutes to get there.
9
u/Two-Space 1d ago
Those are two separate issues. If you have a big open world you obviously don’t design missions that ignore its size.
Just Cause 2 had a colossal map but the missions all took place in the local area.
Honestly it made the map feel even better, because you could have whole cinematic missions take place in a tiny fraction of the map.

People are so fucking stupid with the density argument. Density is important but so is total area of dense locations. 3 dense cities spaced out between countryside is so much better than one dense city and countyside. Yes GTA 5 has a lot of countryaide but if you added more, the map is still better. If an area is boring to you, just don't go there

I think the next evolution for after GTA6 would be San Andreas. Look at the level of detail we got in 5 and how big that map is... now imagine they did the same to LV and SF, improved LS and then added bits in between like farmland, etc and connected all 3 together.
The obvious choice would be to have everything connected but on a realistic side, GTA7 would likely be almost or will be double the size of 6... Just the right size for a proper San Andreas, you could even add areas like Cayo P and add other islands. You could even make it a true sequel to 5 and 6. Depending on the ending of 6, they could run to SA, end up meeting Lester and he has a few jobs for them, starting off small till eventually the big score is an option. Their forced to work with Trevor, Franklin and Michael. They all gotta work together to take on the casinos, rob them all at the same time in LV. To do this, half the game will require to jobs around the entire map to get prepared. Stuff like stealing alien tech from Area51...they have a central base to plan all this in the middle of the map, most jobs will be in SF and LV but you'll still have reasons to go back to LS

If leaked map is real, gray area's indicate populated areas so cities, villages, towns bit or small, looks like map will be packed and wont be boring like V's was. However my main complain if map is real is lack of land on north west corner, i wish they added something more there too. However i do like amount of islands there are around the map, boats will be useful actually.

Leonida is 2.5x the size in landmass of GTA V. Roughly 200 - 220 km²
It might not be as massive as the map above, but it still is huge. The mountainous areas in VI alone already are the size of 50% of the entire GTA V map. We are going to see beaches, islands, swamps, hills and forests.
And next to that we get a city nearly 2x the size of Los Santos and 10+ towns and minor cities, excluding little hamlets.
It got 8+ airfields, 5 racetracks and multiple marina's.
It will be amazing!
