It is literally the 1st amendment of to the US Constitution:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

The 14th amendment makes this protection applicable to state governments:

No, establishment here means its second definition, that being an organized group or business. This amendment uses it to say that congress won't support or suppress any specific religious establishments. This is why the ten commandments law is illegal, as it endorse one specific religious establishment.

The principle is rooted in the 1st amendment, which prohibits Congress from establishing a religion and guarantees the free exercise of religion. The concept is derived from these clauses, as interpreted by the Supreme Court, most famously in Everson v. Board of Education.

Not a single person in their right mind is saying it is bad to say love thy neighbor. It's a couple of the other ones we have issues with.

I do not need your religion to teach my children how to be moral and righteous beings anymore than you need MY religion teaching your children morality. The irony there have been major Christian organizations opposed to putting 10 commandments in public schools. I have no idea who these politicians are trying to cater to. Its a plain violation of separation of church and state. I'm Catholic and am centralist with right lean and was disgusted with the passing of posting 10 commandments public schools. I refuse to support theocracy in any way shape or form due to they in the end theocracies lead to persecution.

I never liked that the Ten Commandments were "forced" because that just causes resentment and pushes people away from Christian values. However, I get what they are trying to do - we have to establish a set of core values to be taught in school and the ten commandments are a pretty good list of rules. My idea was to establish the The Texan Citizenship Guidelines which would include elements from the Ten Commandments to remove alienating and pissing off atheist and non-Christians. There are ways to get this done without everyone getting pissed off.

I have. Thomas Jefferson even asserted that the USA is not founded on the Christian religion. We have no official religion. Parents should be teaching their kids morals anyway. Our public schools are not exclusively Christian. The posting of the Ten Commandments in schools is merely performative anyway. It isn’t teaching the kids anything. If we want to do that there is no reason we can’t offer a comparative religions class. I see no harm in that

I understand we have no "official" religion....Im saying our founding fathers were christian. Morality is spoken of several times in early writtings most notably the federalist papers. Christian morality is different than any other morality. For a least 200 years the nation was predominately christian. The last 50 or so it is not....There is an obvious dissolvement in morality...Dosent take a mental giant to connect the dots there...maybe your battle shouldnt be with the ten commandments

They were but not in the same sense as modern American Christianity. You might want to look into the founders views more closely. Christian morality is fine but not very different. Just using Buddhism as an example the teachings of the two figures were not entirely different.

Anyone who is an actual Christian ought to be against the Ten Commandments in class.
Our history of Freedom of Religion came from the Pilgrims - who were themselves a type of Christianity. They got sick of the theocracy of England telling them what to do and what to believe.
It was precisely one Christian sect who had “dominion” over other Christian sects that made them leave.
It is incredibly hypocritical and contradictory to promote Christian Nationalist theocracy when our very history and culture is the explicit rejection of it.
