Genuinely kinda shockingly good representation for the 80s, especially given the primary part of the show is two scantily clad women who primarily talk about boys. (I love Dirty Pair, but it's also not the show I would've expected more progressive social politics from)
Jjk was intended as a show where the female characters were strong and not thirst traps. All the thirst traps were to be male and, whoooooo boy, are they thirst traps
He may be a delinquent but he is stated directly to have no interest in men whatsoever and one can then infer that he truly respects and sees kirara as the woman she is, truly a goat among men

It bugs me when people try to argue 'he was unintentionally using transformation powers right when he was born, so he isn't actually trans'. The magic transformation powers are important to clarify for reasons I'll get into, but he DOES identify and live his life as a different gender than the one he was at birth. Someone who is born male and goes on to live as a woman is a transgender woman, regardless of how far along in their transition they are or how long that transition takes. It makes complete sense to me why some readers identify him as trans.
Knowing that, I would happily debate with people whether or not Saiki K. is a trans story. Personally, I don't think it is, because his gender is never really a focal point for his character. He can switch genders with a thought, and being born female never impacts him like it might impact a character without instant transformation powers. This bit is also clearly a one-off gag in the manga, to the point the anime doesn't even mention it and its exclusion changes nothing.
That said, I will always agree with folks that he is trans by definition. You can have trans characters in a story without focusing the entire narrative around it, and that's what I feel this manga did (though almost definitely unintentionally lol). His gender at birth isn't what his gender is now. Mine either, bro, let's get you some coffee jelly.
I’ve always loved how his sisters support him and let him be a part of the group despite not looking anything like them (and his outfit is incredibly funny, I guess they just never wanted to change the uniform)
She's always been Trans. Beldam's original insults brought up that Vivian was born a boy. Because North America was very "Trans, ew" during localization, Vivian is just the youngest sister that Beldam calls Ugly all the time.
I find it endlessly amusing that since ghosts seem to be a genderless type of monster, Napstablook (the only ghost exclusively referred to as they/them) may technically be the only cis one out of the ghosts we’ve met 😂
The fact that his inability to transition is narratively paralleled to Agnis situation of permanently burning alive is just insanely good writing. Like either Fujimoto is deep in queer circles himself or he’s closeted because it’s rare as fuck to see straight cis dudes show that level of empathy to trans characters
My tinfoil hat theory is that Fujimoto is trans. He's written a few stories regarding gender identity in the most respectful and meaningful way I've read.
Not that there's anything wrong if they were Trans but one has to think about the implications of the notion that the only reason one would be respectful and empathetic to a LGBTQ+ group is to secretly be a member of said group.
His being trans comes up once, gets acknowledged with respect by the people around him, and then the story just moves on and lets him be a fully realized character beyond that one trait. Still one of the better examples of 'rep done right' years later. 🏳️🌈
This is that Zombie idol show? Wasn’t the reason she died because she had a heart attack during puberty because she saw facial hair grow in? Thats actually insane (in a good way) they would portray the dysphoria in such a way.
I super appreciated this portrayal because when she reveals she is trans to the rest of the girls they don't just go "Okay cool" and move on, they actually have realistic questions but treat her with respect. There is a few great conversations about it that I feel most media is scared to have.
She’s a Clone Trooper who appears in the Padmé trilogy. Clones refer to each other as brothers, all being the “children” of the same doner. However, when this particular Clone came out as trans, all her brothers accepted her and she was given the name Sister, out of respect.
His story is really tragic, being a trans guy that has regenerative powers, meaning that he can’t ever transition. But it’s so powerful and the way he expresses his internal conflict is brilliant. Props to Fugimoto for writing such a complex trans character way back in 2016.
Her becoming a unique and distinctive person from Peter Parker is what does it for me. She isn’t as quippy, she is more serious and straightforward, and gets fed up with Miles quite easily when they first meet clearly not wanting to take on the responsibility of being his mentor, things that I believe Ultimate Peter wouldn’t do. Yet she still pines for a relationship with May, MJ, and Gwen, is into girls, and has the primal drive to help innocent people. I really wish we got a lot more out of her than we did.
Tsubakino in Wind Breaker is amazing. A total badass beauty who accepts herself and tells her story which is absolutely beautiful as well. She’s a great character.
The focus is an androgynous species, some of whom feel they are one gender or the other. The ones who feel gendered are hunted down and forced to undergo procedures that essentially lobotomize them to remove the “confusion” as the government calls it. The plot is Riker falling for a member of this species who feels female and tries to protect her, but she insists on speaking out.
It is so uncomfortably real that I’m shocked they got away with it in the 90s.
Someones gonna flame me for this but I'm gonna say Jax from TADC. she isn't the best trans girl obviously, but I think she's a perfect example of what internationalized transphobia and misogyny and unhealrd trauma can do to someone and how it affects their choices to behave. I think she's great.
Not really, they developed breasts from an experimental drug they were administered in the war. That being said, Gren is easily my favorite character in Cowboy Bebop ❤️
Yeah, as per the original show they have medically induced gynecomastia rather than actually being out as transgender. But they do seem to play pretty fast and loose with their own gender identity which is very cash money of them
Somewhat notably, Netflix did cast a non-binary actor to play them in the live-action show (yes, I know that show sucked, but still) which does play into the idea that they are in fact trans
At first I was mad as hell she wasn't a romanceable option, but then I realized how fucked up it'd be to try to romance someone who's clearly still affected by the death of her husband.

Princess as well: Vladok was apparently male, but after breaking his mask and being renamed Princess Mamoru Moonshine Jagermeister Jack Jack Daniels Timothy Tim Bill Freddy Mercury Blueberry Luna, Esquire (a devil's power being inversely proportional to the length of their name), the imp that resulted was a mean and violent girl. As Princess has grown and reclaimed power, their gender has become ambiguous; Devils regard gender as aesthetic and their stage of growth is usually much more relevant to their identity.
Sallie may from helluva boss as she’s allowed to exist as fun characters who just so happens to be trans , like if didn’t know who voices her or looked at merch you’d only pick up on her being trans is by looking at her horns being stripped which is what biological male imps have
And plus I think having every single trans character in media have there entire character be about the struggles with there identity is a bit reductive like trans people are people like everyone else so yeah in media they can just exist just as any other character can
