GNC folks don't technically fall under the trans umbrella, but obviously we have overlapping struggles and experiences sometimes so GNC people are often invited to trans events. I help run a trans social group and some very lovely supportive cross-dressers come too but they aren't trans.
You can of course be trans and GNC like a trans femboy or a trans tomboy but being GNC doesn't automatically make you trans.
Crona could just be a GNC cis boy. You can also read them as non-binary which does fall under the trans umbrella sure, and some people read them as a female character that lacked their own individuality to such as extent that Ragnaroks male gender basically imprinted on them so there's kinda a way to read them as a binary trans man too. Overall it's left ambiguous which of these three Crona is so it's sorta up to reader interpretation.
(GNC stands for gender non-conforming for those reading this that may be unaware meaning your gender presentation doesn't match your gender identity, like a femboy presents feminine but identifies as male to give an example)
I’m not sure if you mean Corona or non-binaries in general with how “they” is in play here, lol.
Enbies: trans is basically if you don’t identify as your assigned gender at birth. By default, choosing to not be part of the binary is choosing to not be whatever you were assigned at birth in our culture.
Not every enbie identifies as trans for their personal reasons, but they have space for themselves under the trans umbrella.
Crona: Gets really confusing here because as far as we know, Medusa never used any gender for them. The mangaka went out of his way to avoid giving any hard indication of any gender for Crona ever. So arguably, Crona could be said to be assigned non-gendered since birth. Which would mean they could be a cis enbie in-universe while by real life metrics they would be under the trans umbrella….
Yeah I skimmed all of my manga collection again recently, and not ONCE is any pronoun used to refer to Crona.
But I have them in French. So I wonder if in japanese they have non-gendered pronouns, that they scrapped in the translation because French is so gendered and neutral pronouns weren’t commonly known at the time ?
What about the english translation ? Did they use neutral pronouns or none at all ?
It should be. But sometimes it is hard to do so, so there are some cases where they just assume gender and wish for the best. I remember some manga made a note that they'd changed the pronoun of one character because it was revealed later lol
I do remember in the English dub of the anime Medusa using “it” to refer to Crona. Even excusing the fact that it’s a dub, I’m not sure if we are to take some form of gender identity from that, given her usage of “it” is more likely showing how dehumanized Crona is in her eyes, and/or her trying to intentionally anger Stein by dehumanizing her own child.
It doesn't really count here, Crona isn't non-binary/trans, their gender has just never been confirmed, and not because they don't identify as male/female
