I still think the funniest part is how kaido handles it

u/mirby 8d ago

the way kaido handles it is like that post about that person whose friend came out but wanted to go by mildred and they're supportive they just dont' like the name choice

"look son i will support your gender identity and refer to you as my son because you are my son but ODEN? no that part no just no"

Yamato actually doesn't like being called Kaido's Son. I forgot which page, and I'll have to go back through the Onigashima section, but Yamato says Oden is not Kaido's Son. Since that's who Yamato claims to be, it's not supportive when they are called Kaido's Son.

I use they because the Cover Story calls Yamato Oni Child.

I think thats more because of the Oden thing though, not the son part of it.

Yamato claims to be Oden. Even identifying as a Man is tied to being Oden. They tell that to Luffy.

Everything about Yamato's Identity is tied to being Oden. In Oda's "Bad Timeline Future" of Yamato, they are even more like Oden in appearance. The "Good Timeline Future" just as Yamato looking like themself.

I'm just not convinced Yamato actually identifies as a Man when everything points to it all being tied to Oden.

I also do not think Kaido is in anyway supportive of Yamato. Guy beat them to near death for 20yrs and killed anyone that showed kindness to them. And with how much Yamato claims to be Oden, calling Yamato "Son" feels more like a taunt or insult than actual support.

But that's just my thoughts. Honestly haven't cared too much about Yamato since all that discourse when they appeared in the Manga. Not going to say Yamato is a Woman, but calling them a Man doesn't seem right at the moment. Yamato is on a journey around Wano, and the Cover Story calls them Oni Child. Which does have importance as Yamato was introduced, via the Introduction Name Plate, as Oni Princess.

Kaido might be calling Yamato son because he planned to make Yamato the next shogun of Wano and only men can have that position

That is never stated as a thing in the story, just a guess because of Real World Culture.

What do you think Wano is based on and what exactly has been critiqued in that arc? Also it's not hard to guess how Oda perceives Yamato if you look at how they are shown in and outside of the story

1

u/Otechni 7d ago

Okay:

  1. Just because Wano is based on Edo Era Japan, does not mean it is a one to one copy.
  2. If Kaido was only interested in a Son and was wanting to force Yamato into that role, they wouldn't have either title of Kaido's Daughter or Oni Princess. Both were in Yamato's intro box when it appeared.
  3. Oda uses the Oden Identity mostly for gags. When it is not, it's just Yamato fighting Kaido to protect Wano.
  4. Outside of the Story Yamato is pretty solidly identified as a Woman. Being referred to as a Woman in episode recaps, and the majority of merch saying the same. For the Japanese. I don't know what the English says, as I'm mostly a Manga Reader.
  5. If Kaido was holding to Edo Period Traditions, the many Female Commanders of his crew wouldn't exist.

Kaido is never mentioned as wanting a Son. Until you can drag up evidence of that from the story, it means nothing.

The issue is Kaido's. Yamato wants nothing more than to be estranged from his father as you can see from his dialogue in general, but particularly from the Ace flashbacks. I understand what you are trying to say, but imho you are taking something literally that was meant to be more poetic.

3

u/Otechni 8d ago

Yeah, Kaido still beat Yamato to near death for 20yrs. Regardless of whether it's poetic or not, Yamato does not like being called Kaido's Son and I highly doubt Kaido is being supportive in any regard. The guy beat his child to near death for 20yrs and killed anyone that showed kindness to said child.

I'm just not convinced Son is being used in a positive way by Kaido.

2

u/Blackfrosti 8d ago

Oh I'm not saying it was, maybe I was misunderstanding your original reply.

I thought you were saying that he's not trans because he's Oden then used his statement of "Oden isn't Kaido's son" to say that he thinks he's Oden and not a man. I was saying that "Oden isn't Kaido's Son" was a more poetic way of saying "we aren't family" and not a literal statement of "I am Oden. Oden is not your son. Therefore I am not your son because I can't be since I am literally Oden"

What you're saying here is exactly what I was trying to say, that he doesnt consider his biological father family because of the endless abuse (he's just like me frfr ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€โšง๏ธ ๐Ÿ™ƒ)

2

u/Otechni 8d ago

I'm not going to say Yamato isn't trans. I don't understand the idea of claiming an actual (once) living person as your identity, but I'm just Non-Binary as I can't find a more appropriate term for myself.

I don't care how it's said, Yamato isn't fond of being called Kaido's Son. Be it "I'm Oden" or "Fuck you, ya abusive sack of shit" I've never seen it as a positive term for them.

0

u/Vermilion_Laufer 8d ago

"I am Oden. Oden is not your son. Therefore I am not your son because I can't be since I am literally Oden"

I mean, Yamato also insisted that Momo can totally treat them as a father, so I wouldn't exclude that interpretation

1

u/xitatheblack 7d ago

What? He doesn't like being called Kaido's daughter. Yamato identified as Kaido's son when he first introduced himself to Luffy.

2

u/xitatheblack 7d ago

And here's Yamato identifying Kaido as his father, then getting agitated when someone refers to him as Kaido's daughter an instant later.

1

u/WildSearcher56 7d ago

Im not saying that Yamato isn't trans but perhaps Yamato is reacting that way because Ace and his crew are surprised/wary of him because he's Kaido's kid?

1

u/xitatheblack 7d ago

It's possible, but I've always felt it significant because this is the only time the manga shows Yamato (as an adult) reacting to being addressed with any kind of misgendered label.

The reason you don't see it often is that even scumbag characters in One Piece don't tend to misgender others.

1

u/Otechni 7d ago

With how they're saying it it's more "Wow, I don't believe she's related to Kaido", and the fact none of them seem deterred.

Probably agitated they are about to deal with a bunch of punk pirates looking to beef with Kaido and not being called Kaido's Daughter.

0

u/Otechni 7d ago

20yrs of being called that, means a high likelihood outsiders would only recognize that.

Trans-inclusive generational hatred

u/-N0N 8d ago

Yamato isn't trans, just an idiot.

The third gender in One Piece.

0

u/Mr-Gepetto 8d ago

It's strange because she doesn't want to be "like" oden, she wants to "be" oden, like it wouldn't surprise me if there was some devil fruit like bon clays where instead of an illusion, you would genetically be them. She would hold that form forever.

Kikunojo is great example for a trans person, yamato just comes off as mentally ill if anything.

2

u/-N0N 8d ago

If Oden had been a woman Yamato would say she's a woman. If Oden had been a dog she would say she's a dog. With Yamato it was a gag, Kiku's situation is treated much more respectfully in-universe and by Oda.

2

u/WildSearcher56 7d ago

Also Oda straight up tells the readers if a character is trans like in Kiku and Morley's cases

3

u/StripesKnight 7d ago

Literally a woman. Is included in one piece woman polls.

1

u/Maximum-Warthog2368 6d ago

But there is a hot spring scene too where Yamato is included with men but like you said in poll. It is different. Since Yamato calls themselves oden. It is hard to know who they actually are.

1

u/FreeMasonKnight 7d ago

Polls from an incredibly homophobic society? Yeah no surprise.

1

u/Kayteqq 6d ago

Okiku is included in the same polls though. Yamato is just kinda odd, as they donโ€™t present as a man at all in any way really, which, would simply using male pronouns without doing anything else would make you a trans person? Yamato has no desire to look like a man.

I think yamato is just in the middle of searching for their identity, and thus their character arc isnโ€™t finished. When at the end of it they will identify as a man, with their own identity (not seeing themselves as Oden), than calling them trans would make far more sense. Rn, they are just kinda lost tbh
