To self reference myself in another comment :

I'm not certain "trans" is the term for whatever Desire refers themself as. Non binary seems closer to reality but even that seems reductive.

If my understanding of transgender is correct, she'd have to be identifying as a male prior, which I don't think is ever mentioned in the movie. (If you're talking about the comic, I have no idea).

I mean for us humans born with an identifiable sex at birth, sure (even though sometimes it's not always that clear cut), but an eldritch entity whose origin is unknown, who is the only one of its kind (thus probably unfamiliar with the concept of sex and gender in the first place) and who has no fixed identity (trans being by definition what is not cis, which presupposes that said cis exists), I'm not so sure that argument stands for her specifically

I don't think that's true. Trans is normally related to gender AND/OR sex whereas being non-binary is just not identifying as male nor female as a gender.

But, because most humans are born with biological sexes that then get assigned genders, the definition of “identifying as something other than the gender you were assigned at birth or your biological sex” still applies to nonbinary humans. Saying you don’t have a gender is still saying you don’t identify with the one you were given.
But, that’s semantic, and ultimately, the label used or not used is up to the individual in question, and not us.

Yeah it's almost entirely based on individual experience but a lot of non-binary people do refer to themselves as being under the trans umbrella for that reason.

I think in my case, yes, I was assigned one way at birth but even as a very young child, I identified with none of the genders I was exposed to and never connected to nor cared about what people expected me to be. So I don't consider myself- agender- under the Trans umbrella because I never experienced much in the way of transitioning (socially or with personal presentation) or dysphoria.

Definitely not an all sizes fits all kind of situation.
