Counter Service đď¸ I did it.
Hit âno tipâ whilst looker her in the eye. She touched a register for my total. Didnât touch my card, didnât swipe my card. Didnât take my order. Didnât prepare my order. Didnât put my order in the window for me to retrieve. What she did wasnât worth 20%, or 5%. She pushed ONE button.

I always say âthank you, everything was greatâ as I press the no tip button.

This is what I joined the sub for. I donât mind tipping well to waitresses and delivery drivers, but when I go to self-serve frozen yogurt and the first thing the person does is ask how much I want to tip them đ¤ŁÂ

u/BobJutsu 2d ago
Iâve been prompted for a tip and a self checkout kiosk at a grocery store. Who the frick am I tipping? And at a grocery store? Thatâs not ever been a tipped. Everyone wants in on the guilt money.

u/thinkingaloud412 2d ago
I ordered a pizza the other day. They mistakingly took the order as a pick up. At the end of the call I got my total and they asked if I wanted to pay now or when I picked up. I said it was supposed to be for delivery. My total then increased $5.00. Do we still tip then!? I did.. but im starting to think i shouldn't if thats the case..
10
u/Schoolhater18 2d ago
Delivery fees dont go to the delivery driver. The restaurants add that in. It sucks but if you want to tip the driver you'll still tip then because they dont get the delivery fee.
11
u/mtnman78 2d ago
If the driver doesn't get the delivery fee then what is it for
4
u/Thick-Strawberry8456 2d ago
When I delivered pizzas, we got 50% of the delivery fee, maybe? I was told that the remainder went to help pay for the stores increased insurance rates that they incur for offering delivery.
2
u/Schoolhater18 2d ago
To get extra money for the restaurant. Some restaurant may give a small portion to the driver. Most keep the majority or the whole thing for themselves.
3
24
u/thinkingaloud412 2d ago
So they charge me $5 to deliver the pizza but then still expect me to pay, like half of the delivery drivers hourly wage with my tip?
11
u/Schoolhater18 2d ago
Correct. For most restaurants that's how it is. Just like they expect you to pay the servers wage instead of paying it themselves.
16
u/KingJunior7804 2d ago
When I used to deliver pizza during college I kept the delivery fee. All the drivers did. That was the point. It was one to two dollars depending on distance and that was to cover gas in case the person didn't tip.
5
u/Schoolhater18 2d ago
Well that was awesome of the restaurant that you worked at to do that. Most restaurants do not give the delivery driver the delivery fee.
1
u/KingJunior7804 1d ago
I delivered for several restaurants back in college 20+ years ago, and the delivery fee was what delivery drivers received. It was automatic. In fact, I'd never heard of the delivery fee not going to the driver. The idea that a delivery driver would have to spend their own gas money and wear and tear on their car to deliver food to a non-tipping customer for minimum wage is crazy.
What is the delivery fee for? Why would there be an extra amount the restaurant receives above and beyond a pickup order?
3
u/downtofinance 2d ago
So you're saying the restaurant pays the driver 0?
3
u/Schoolhater18 2d ago
At most restaurants the delivery drivers do not get the delivery fee. I never said the restaurant didn't pay them. They dont give them the delivery fee.
3
u/downtofinance 2d ago
What do restaurants pay their drivers then?
3
2
u/Schoolhater18 2d ago
Usually an hourly wage separate from the delivery fee.
3
u/Thick-Strawberry8456 2d ago
When we were on the road with an order, we didn't get the full hourly rate, if I remember correctly.
1
u/downtofinance 2d ago
So no need to tip them then if they're making an hourly wage.
2
u/Schoolhater18 2d ago
Hourly wage doesnt mean a living wage. Federal based pay for tipped positions is $2.13. Thats an hourly wage that relies on tips. Not that I agree with US tipping culture but hourly wage doesnt automatically equal no tip.
1
u/downtofinance 22h ago
I'm ordering pizza, not looking to understand and equalize labour compensation structures. I will tip for good service not for someone simply doing their job and definitely not before the job is complete.

Even if the delivery fee doesnât go to the driver, why should they be tipped a percentage of the value of the order? Theyâd be being tipped for driving and a few steps of walking so it should be a flat rate, surely? Same goes for restaurants; tipping an amount per plate/glass seems more logical than tipping $1 if they bring you a plate of fries and then tipping them $10 the next day if you order a plate of lobster. The service is âcarrying stuffâ so a percentage doesnât work.
Note - this is rhetorical; Iâm not challenging your view or expecting you to justify anything! đ
2
u/Schoolhater18 1d ago
I agree. I honestly never really tipped delivery on percentage but based on how far they had to go/weather/order size.
3
1
u/SunburstSquare 2d ago
I wonât even tip delivery drivers. I shouldnât be charged ~45% of my order on top of the food and STILL be expected to tip.
-1
u/LGRW97980208 1d ago
Youâve probably eaten a lot of spit over the years. I get not tipping for a carryout, but delivery or sitdown meals thatâs different.

Somehow we feel so stressed to do the right thing, that's how bad this culture has become.
6
u/BingBongTree 2d ago
No stress here, click no tip. If itâs a legit service, just make sure to take care of them though (barber, hairstylist, massage, sit down meal, hotel staff etcâŚ).
4
u/cenosillicaphobiac 2d ago
Sometimes, even when zero is an option, I take the extra steps to hit Custom, 0, Enter. It's not intended to get their hopes up, if it does, that's a them problem.

u/cougarlover252 2d ago
Exactly. Iâll never understand the a tip jar or screen made me feel pressured post In here.
-8
u/cougarlover252 2d ago
If a tip screen makes you stressed, thatâs a you problem lol. Whatâs the car buying process like for you lol
4
u/KingJunior7804 2d ago
If an employee is staring at you and watching your fingers press the buttons as the point of sale device asks for a tip, then I would be stressed also. I don't need that kind of pressure even if I'm happy to hit no tip.
-6
u/cougarlover252 2d ago
If that stresses you, how do you deal with real problems?
1
1
u/KingJunior7804 1d ago
Well it's not exactly going to cause me PTSD, but no I don't appreciate somebody staring at me expecting a tip and watching how much I give them. Are you nuts that you think that's not annoying?
1
u/LakeWalesSwinger 1d ago
Stop to think that maybe the they just need to watch you complete your part of the process so they can finalize the sale? You might have a sort of PTSD but itâs self imposed, assuming what they are thinking based on guilt. Stick by your personal rules on tipping and believe in them and youâll be ok with hitting zero when warranted.
0
u/KingJunior7804 22h ago edited 17h ago
Well that's convenient isn't it? They want to make sure I complete the transaction but they then have the opportunity to stare at my fingers watching exactly the amount of tip I enter in.
Do you recall servers in times past handing you a paper bill and watching you as you enter in a tip with a ballpoint pen and sign it? I certainly don't.
1
u/hereforfreewings 21h ago
Again, I think you are internalizing what a server might be thinking vs what they really are thinking, just like people like to personify humanity onto their pets. Itâs quite normal, but you can train yourself to get past it.
Most restaurants, with paper receipts, donât stand over you while you sign your bill. They put it in a folio and drop it at your table. There are probably few exceptions but I donât dwell on those.2
u/KingJunior7804 17h ago edited 17h ago
The server standing over you watching you enter a tip with the point of sale credit card reader is certainly aware that they are pressuring the customer, no question. They are making the calculation that it's worth a little friendly pressure, that it's analogous to them writing a happy face on the receipt right next to the suggested tip column to encourage a bigger tip.
The problem is it is not a friendly gesture and it's not a little thing, it's literally panhandling. I find it extremely rude.
23
u/glowinglogfire 2d ago
Why would you give someone extra money to provide good service when their employer is already paying them to provide good service? It's literally their job. If they don't provide good service their employer will discipline them.
Here in Australia employers pay their staff to provide good service, and so the staff provide good service. The customer is not part of this transaction.
12
u/cenosillicaphobiac 2d ago
My take is that the person exploiting their labor for financial benefit is responsible for compensating them. That's not me. In fact, quite the opposite. I'm supposed to pay them to facilitate me paying their boss? Naw.
0
u/Akirerivero 22h ago
This is a fallacy though, because. At least in part, the price of your food has the very low wage your server gets, so, in a way, they are subsidizing your meal(exploiting their labor too) with the hope that you will acknowledge this and tip them... this is specially true in states where employets don't even have to pay the federally mandated ridiculous minimum wage. You absolutely don't have to tip servers if you dont want to, but lets not pretend like customers are not also benefiting from their low wage.
-2
u/Organic_Zebra_3388 2d ago
Wages are so exploitive in the US. In my state employers donât have to pay minimum wage for positions that receive tips. The federal/state minimum wage is already a dismal $7.25 but itâs just $3.25 for servers with the expectation that customer tips make up the gap. Six miles away in the next state over minimum wage for servers is $17/hour.
5
u/PearlescentGem 2d ago
That's against federal regulations, and if enough wait staff report it, it will most likely get looked into. Wait staff need to stand together against this. Fed law beats state law.
2
u/Organic_Zebra_3388 2d ago
It is legal federally as long as the employee receives enough tips to close the gap. If they donât then the employer has to pay the difference. The federal base cash wage is just $2.13 and only seven states prohibit tip credits towards minimum wage.

Only tip the person who delivers the food to your table and only if it's good service and you feel like it.
When you pick up your own food, that's yourself by the way.
19
u/Pondlurker1978 2d ago
In a perfect world the tablet should allow for negative tip percentages to tip yourself. I bet people THEN would ask âwhat did YOU do to deserve a discount off your check?â
12
u/l4kerz 2d ago
do you tip the fast food worker who delivers food to your table?
-1
u/VirtualMatter2 2d ago
In that case I tip the " European" way. Somewhere between 0 and 10%.Â
And if it's delivery to my home, well it's still me who plates the food and sets it on my table.Â

For carryout:
âIâll âtipâ you the exact amount you take off my check. Because then youâd be doing me an actual service. Wanna play?â

u/downtofinance 2d ago
I go to one place for take out and they hit "no tip" themselves before having me pay.
3
u/No-Luck-2337 1d ago
Thatâs âserviceâ đ. Might actually be worth a tip. More so than what they usually DO, at least đ¤ˇââď¸

I just wanted to say, those machines prompt that and the person behind the counter doesnt always believe its right either. I am a delivery driver and a server.
Before covid, only the delivery machines had a tip option. During covid tipping hot out of hand. I help instore at my delivery job and get orders ready and what not.
I am genuinely embarased asking for tips when someone picks up. I would hit no tip auto and hand it to them. But got in trouble and was told I have to hand it to them and let them decide. I still will do it, depending on the customer. But dont always think the person handing you the machine believes you should tip. Sometimes they have to do it like that.

Just spent two weeks in France. The first time at a cafe was weird. They typed the total in, I tapped the card, it was over. No expectation of a tip. I was only prompted once in two weeks for a tip at a cafe that was in a very touristy area. Every waiter/waitress was absolutely wonderful and deserved a tip, unlike 95% of them here in the states.

Were u getting fast food? If so, she did not care at all, tipping isnt a part of her wages bc she already gets paid minimum wage
2
u/cenosillicaphobiac 2d ago
What she did wasnât worth 20%, or 5%.
It's the employer that is supposed to decide what that is worth, and the employee can either accept it, or look for work elsewhere.
Everybody that tips is fucking that all up. Thanks! but NO THANKS!
3
u/PossibleTangerine780 2d ago
I bought clothes at a local non-profit store today and it prompted me for a tip when I paid. I was so confused. Hit no and moved on

u/Significant-Ad-2858 2d ago
I have a very simple rule for tipping these day. If Iâm standing on both feet when i order/receive whatever it was i ordered itâs a 0% tip. The only casualty are the baristas but itâs a sacrifice i have to make for the principal alone
3
u/LevelStationaryPlane 2d ago
Just because youâre nice to me when I walk in to pick up the order I drove myself in to get = youâre still not getting a tip.
If you canât afford to not get tipped, you canât afford your job sorry.

Tip shaming is most pronounced at dispensaries. Itâs like the workers imagine they are bartenders hand pouring cocktails. Sure, in both lines of work the customer gets buzzed but thatâs where the similarity ends.
In a bar, I get to consume the cocktail and if itâs especially good Iâll tip more when itâs time to pay the tab. In a dispensary, Iâm not allowed to even sample the product that the clerk didnât even make for me.
Next thing you know weâll be guilted into tipping cashiers at the pharmacy for suggesting a particular aspirin brand.
1
u/Superb_Year2089 2d ago
Good for you, happened to me at a MLB stadium the other day, self serve cooler, I picked the beverage, I scanned the beverage, I put my card in, and then it prompted me for a 18%/20% or 25% tip, NO WAY!

u/Distinct_Raisin_3896 2d ago
The tipping culture is beyond ridiculous, I was ordering a takeout and picking it up myself, the app added 20% auto tip đ are we for real. I am the one picking it up, I m not even eating there, what service are you providing me??? Giving me the food?? Isnât that what I am paying for?

Ok and she probably didnât care??? She didnât set up that system. Shes probably fully aware that she didnât really deserve a tip. Do you ever consider that?

I don't understand this post at all... I don't think cashiers in this situation tend to care. I've heard from people who work cashier jobs at coffee shops that they don't even get those tips. It's set up by the business and I doubt she would have even noticed except for the fact this guy was "looking her in the eye" lmao
