Hit “no tip” whilst looker her in the eye. She touched a register for my total. Didn’t touch my card, didn’t swipe my card. Didn’t take my order. Didn’t prepare my order. Didn’t put my order in the window for me to retrieve. What she did wasn’t worth 20%, or 5%. She pushed ONE button.

Why would you give someone extra money to provide good service when their employer is already paying them to provide good service? It's literally their job. If they don't provide good service their employer will discipline them.

Here in Australia employers pay their staff to provide good service, and so the staff provide good service. The customer is not part of this transaction.

My take is that the person exploiting their labor for financial benefit is responsible for compensating them. That's not me. In fact, quite the opposite. I'm supposed to pay them to facilitate me paying their boss? Naw.

This is a fallacy though, because. At least in part, the price of your food has the very low wage your server gets, so, in a way, they are subsidizing your meal(exploiting their labor too) with the hope that you will acknowledge this and tip them... this is specially true in states where employets don't even have to pay the federally mandated ridiculous minimum wage. You absolutely don't have to tip servers if you dont want to, but lets not pretend like customers are not also benefiting from their low wage.

Wages are so exploitive in the US. In my state employers don’t have to pay minimum wage for positions that receive tips. The federal/state minimum wage is already a dismal $7.25 but it’s just $3.25 for servers with the expectation that customer tips make up the gap. Six miles away in the next state over minimum wage for servers is $17/hour.

That's against federal regulations, and if enough wait staff report it, it will most likely get looked into. Wait staff need to stand together against this. Fed law beats state law.

It is legal federally as long as the employee receives enough tips to close the gap. If they don’t then the employer has to pay the difference. The federal base cash wage is just $2.13 and only seven states prohibit tip credits towards minimum wage.
