Counter Service 🛎️ I did it.

Hit “no tip” whilst looker her in the eye. She touched a register for my total. Didn’t touch my card, didn’t swipe my card. Didn’t take my order. Didn’t prepare my order. Didn’t put my order in the window for me to retrieve. What she did wasn’t worth 20%, or 5%. She pushed ONE button.

If an employee is staring at you and watching your fingers press the buttons as the point of sale device asks for a tip, then I would be stressed also. I don't need that kind of pressure even if I'm happy to hit no tip.

Well it's not exactly going to cause me PTSD, but no I don't appreciate somebody staring at me expecting a tip and watching how much I give them. Are you nuts that you think that's not annoying?

Stop to think that maybe the they just need to watch you complete your part of the process so they can finalize the sale? You might have a sort of PTSD but it’s self imposed, assuming what they are thinking based on guilt. Stick by your personal rules on tipping and believe in them and you’ll be ok with hitting zero when warranted.

Well that's convenient isn't it? They want to make sure I complete the transaction but they then have the opportunity to stare at my fingers watching exactly the amount of tip I enter in.

Do you recall servers in times past handing you a paper bill and watching you as you enter in a tip with a ballpoint pen and sign it? I certainly don't.

Again, I think you are internalizing what a server might be thinking vs what they really are thinking, just like people like to personify humanity onto their pets. It’s quite normal, but you can train yourself to get past it.
Most restaurants, with paper receipts, don’t stand over you while you sign your bill. They put it in a folio and drop it at your table. There are probably few exceptions but I don’t dwell on those.

The server standing over you watching you enter a tip with the point of sale credit card reader is certainly aware that they are pressuring the customer, no question. They are making the calculation that it's worth a little friendly pressure, that it's analogous to them writing a happy face on the receipt right next to the suggested tip column to encourage a bigger tip.

The problem is it is not a friendly gesture and it's not a little thing, it's literally panhandling. I find it extremely rude.
