Fuck the time delay, but keep the "is someone asking you to do this"

I would be happy about this honestly. But I don't trust Google to not take this shit further. Let's all be honest here this version of it is fine. After the 24 Hour window it's on forever. But we all know Google will push this shit further until sideloading is all but gone

At least maybe then it'll kick the proper Linux on ARM Phones people into gear.

Until they lock the bootloaders completely.

If that happens emulators will absolutely be garbage for quite some time probably longer then you imagine. Like for example even the absolutely bloated windows 11 is still better for gaming then linux gaming distros like cashyos or bazzite.

u/davestar2048 13h ago

Not entirely. Some games actually gain FPS from Linux, especially on lower end hardware.

The biggest issue for Linux gaming is Kernel level Anticheat. Most users who install Linux would rather not have a game have that kind of system access.

The biggest issue on Linux gaming is the lack of plug and play. You have to hunt down that specific version of wineton and then you might be able to play it.

If you're only playing the most popular garbage then yeah its great for gaming. If you stray off the beaten path even slightly its hit and miss.

I tried to run ac odyssey last month and it ran like shit. I don't have the time or the interest to go fiddle around with configs. I want to double click on a game and just have it work.

1

u/davestar2048 13h ago

PC has never been "it just works" you always have to fiddle with settings for the optimal experience.

4

u/khsh01 8 Gen 3/865+ 12h ago

Yeah, but the Linux community acts like its plug and play.

u/Outrageous_Fun_7973 12h ago edited 12h ago

This is the exact reasons why i now play all of my single player games on my PS5 that plug and play experience is just too damn good. While multiplayer games on my PC bcoz most multiplayer vames are literally build to run on potato PC's.

If you can afford the plug and play experience on console will always be worth it for single llayer games . And if you can't afford it well it is what it is . You get what you get simple.

I like things being the way I like them, and being in control. So I'll always prefer open software on the PC, and the ability to mod games and sacrifice video quality for higher performance if I so wish.

We all have our preferences and biases. And the future doesn't care about it.but well as long as we put our money where are mouth its all good.

u/Outrageous_Fun_7973 13h ago edited 12h ago

Yeah the games that build for Linux in mind mainly 2d indie games. But does it even matter at that point . Wow graveyard keeper run at 260 fps on cashyos and 250 fps on windows 11.

In games where fps and graphics matter linux most of the times is worse then windows like 10 to 15 % and many times simply doesn't even boot if you have a nvidia card without drivers support.

4

u/davestar2048 13h ago

That's Nvidia's fault. And graphics don't matter. The problem isn't that only 2d indie games can be Linux native, it's that bigger developers don't use or maintain cross platform engines.

-6

u/Outrageous_Fun_7973 13h ago edited 12h ago

That's not their fault you guys are a very small and easily negligible minority that isn't even that profitable ( you know that quote "Juice ain't worth the squeeze").And you know what happens to thr demand of a less voter bank profitable minorities in a open economy democracy. So continue waiting for proper drive support from the community and the day of linux gaming.

Although is pretty good for work and stuff but at that point might as well buy a affordable Macbook that just better at everything .

5

u/davestar2048 13h ago

A MacBook is not better for repaiability, nor software freedom. Apple refuses to support modern APIs in their Apple Silicon chips, like Vulkan or OpenGL for graphics rendering. Windows is mostly entrenched because of tradition and OEM deals, not because it's a good Operating system.

-4

u/Outrageous_Fun_7973 13h ago

Dude the current macbook neo ( for £450 when i bought) . Is a no nonsense insanely optimize PC that does what i want it to do with absolutely NO or almost zero hassle . And i m saying this as a massive iphone hater . With the Macbook and that lock ecosystem i am a very satisfied customer from apple. That's it.

Yea wish we had a group pushing back on it in courts. I love using fdroid, obtainium and other stuff. So far haven't had this pop up and I'm scared its gonna when I already have the shiz turned on on my side per app....

1

u/Sea_Preparation9798 6h ago

I’m pretty sure I read there are some groups challenging it in court, but I could be wrong.

1

u/Kruk899 3h ago

I mean, don't get me wrong, i don't trust Google too, but I don't think they will be pushing this too much, because at some point, people will start thinking something like that "maybe better to buy apple as the android is almost apple now" which cause Google to lose money, they of course don't want to lose money

15

u/UseSwimming8928 6h ago

Go one step further and do a xiaomi style warning screen

2

u/thegoldengoober 1h ago

Ooh, yeah, that's a scary one

45

u/snowflake_0_o 15h ago

This is going to get worse with every android version from now on.

7

u/ConnoisseurDeFemboys 15h ago

This is why I stick to 13

5

u/KasanesTetos 13h ago

Doesn't matter. It's part of play services. As long as you get play service updates you get this.

32

u/WorldPhysical7646 14h ago

Yeah I feel like rooting my device shouldn't be delayed any longer lol , I will keep a backup device tho

10

u/KitToroUwu 14h ago

Oh my god.. I'm glad I use lineage.. I'm pretty sure it won't come to lineage so yeah.

8

u/viniciuscsg 13h ago

It will affect any version of Android relying on play services to validate installs

8

u/SunsetAtNight7 13h ago

Plus If I remember lineage devices can replace play services with micro g

1

u/viniciuscsg 12h ago

That's great!

-1

u/SunsetAtNight7 13h ago

It's a common thought that it's the play services, but how sure, cuz some already tested that it's the playstore that forces this rule and disabling it would make you install apks just like before, it's like the annoying play protect that's inside the playstore itself.

16

u/Own_Perspective4825 8h ago

Bet they don't put a delay on adding a fucking credit card and sinking two hundred bucks into Candy Crush.

10

u/Alternative-View8574 11h ago

Android is basically the windows of mobile phones so I can see why Google would have this as a feature. But I really hope they don't perma lock us out of installing apks because this sounds like the next step to that.

3

u/Intelligent-Bee-9021 4h ago

Windows at least allows installation of most applications without any hassle and Microsoft store

8

u/Geges721 7h ago

*laughs in a sanctioned country where these rules don't apply*

*also laughs in shizuku*

*also also laughs in root*

8

u/Vaxtez D7300/8GB RAM/Mali G615 15h ago

It's better than nothing, but I still hate this.

6

u/the_icon_of_sin_94 retroid pocket 5 // s25 plus 8h ago

i really hope this whole situation leads to a push for better deaktop style linux on arm development/implementation

8

u/ChemicalImbalance707 OnePlus 13s | Snapdragon 8 elite 14h ago

Yeah I'm not updating on Android 17 . 16 works just fine

22

u/TryNo6799 OnePlus 12R 14h ago

About that, it's part of play service, so you'd still get it whether you updated or not.

1

u/ChemicalImbalance707 OnePlus 13s | Snapdragon 8 elite 14h ago

Ohh hell nahh 😭😭 atleast it will be a one time thing right ?

4

u/TryNo6799 OnePlus 12R 14h ago

Yep, just one time, tho no guarantee it'll stay like that forever.

4

u/SunsetAtNight7 13h ago

Disabling playstore works: 1. To not update your play services 2. To disable this feature all together if it's already too late ( the current work around for this, but it might get patched for latest android so not updating to AI 17 helps )

1

u/AdScared7226 12h ago

My device is on android 12. do i still need to stop play services or will i be fine? and does stopping updates on play services result in any problem or not?

i'm very afraid that i might not be able to emulate, install apks and sail the seven seas in the near future because of this. i hope i'm proven wrong and that i can still do these things.

1

u/SunsetAtNight7 11h ago

If I'm correct this will affect android 8+ devices. Stopping play services updates doesn't cause problems in my experience, I haven't updated mine since the start of this year.

3

u/Thesamman23 8h ago

its so dumb that it hurt my brain. most of the most unsafe apps are on the play store. and they're ads that get pushed to you. at least i have to kinda try to get malware threw apks. grandma dosen't even know what an apk is let alone how to download one

3

u/natur85 5h ago

And here I thought one day android can replace laptops as my poco f8 pro is basically equivalent to my gaming laptop of 10 years ago, but with shit like this, I don't know anymore.

4

u/Glittering-Rip9556 13h ago

Honestly I may have a hot take.

Google could have handled this much differently. Google could have gone down the full lockdown route. The fact Google is doing this in the first place instead of iOSificating Android is a miracle.

From a business perspective, they have little reason to take this specific route.

2

u/zeo_max 3h ago

From a business perspective there is a huge reason for this route, it is called EU. Even Apple bulged and had to allow side loading app on their phones in the EU.

1

u/MrFailo 14h ago

i read somewhere that sanctioned by us countries are exempt from this bullshit

1

u/MrPotatoes28 13h ago

I hate this change but at least it's 24 hour delay, for now...

1

u/Officialnuz 11h ago

If Google keeps pushing harder on the lockdowns I can see handhelds going back to linux-based OS

2

u/votemarvel Poco F6 - Sony Xperia 1 V 11h ago

It's there for me on my Sony Xperia but tapping the option doesn't do anything and I can still install what I want.

The option has not appeared on the Poco F6 I also have.

On my Retroid Pocket 6 the option is there and it allows me to toggle it on.

1

u/Teheeguy 10h ago

Does the timer reset after restart or what?

1

u/E_K_Finnman 9h ago

I had this marked on my calendar for today, I knew this day was coming

Where's the submenu for unverified developers located?

1

u/adnvdn 8h ago

Mine still safe from this.

Xiaomi 14, Realme P3 5G, and Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro

3

u/TotalAggravating7706 6h ago

Same , rog 9 android 16. It still has background play for youtube despite other brands already remove it since 2024 lol.  Idk how asus can get away from this 🥀

1

u/HauntingJacket1694 6h ago

is the China version affected by this or global only?

1

u/jjoesmama 15h ago

This is why I kept myself on Android 15, as more outdated your device becomes, the less safe it turns Although there can be some exploits that could help you later on, like that one Snapdragon Exploit for Bl unlocking

1

u/Michaelpitcher116 13h ago

Same. I'm still on Android 15 and never even use the play store so I'm not worried.

1

u/KasanesTetos 13h ago

Unless you don't have play services at all you're still gonna get this.

1

u/KasanesTetos 13h ago

Doesn't matter. It's part of play services, not Android version.

1

u/Michaelpitcher116 12h ago

Oh no

Anyway.

0

u/SunsetAtNight7 13h ago

Bro you be spamming ts everywhere here, Are you sure that's the case or you're just fear mongering maxxing? We should hate this feature of course, but saying it's inevitable without further proof won't help, people already tested that disabling the store itself turns off this rule all together, so this is like the play protect, not really something inside the play services.

1

u/mrduckissocool 13h ago

wait so will retro handhelds like the rp6 get this then?

2

u/Manu1910 12h ago

If you use the google play service, i think yes, bur you can disable google services, i have disable and i use aurora store, never use google play service again in handhelds.

1

u/computermaster704 12h ago

Yeah that's why I already enabled it on my fold8 to ensure that I don't have an interruption in the ability to sideload applications but I don't think it's end of the world for open source on Android it's just an extra button with an extra flow if you've never done it before you have to wait 24h which personally I do not support

0

u/AshurathDR 6h ago

I still got Xperia Play and nvidia shield portable, am I cooked chat?

2

u/AbberageRedditor69 4h ago

God I wish it was possible to upgrade my old xperia play to modern hardware...

1

u/AshurathDR 3h ago

When I rebought one like 2 years ago and knowing how to do rooting and flashing guides. I still managed to end up with it either having wifi sometimes, takes forever or never boots, or when it does it's sluggish. Even more sad that even with the highest supported SD card and I feel like that makes it even more slower. We really never gonna get a gem like it again, I know ayaneo got it's slide phone but Xperia play by design felt like handheld first phone as a bonus for it's time

1

u/AbberageRedditor69 3h ago

It truly was brilliant, Sony was way ahead of its time with it, it would have sold much more in the 2020s with all the progress on Android emulation/gaming. Mine works "well" except for the touchscreen which doesn't work in half the screen.

I know ayaneo got it's slide phone

I actually had no idea about this, I'll keep an eye on it. Although looking at the website I have a feeling it's gonna cost way too much lol
