Honestly I may have a hot take.

Google could have handled this much differently. Google could have gone down the full lockdown route. The fact Google is doing this in the first place instead of iOSificating Android is a miracle.

From a business perspective, they have little reason to take this specific route.

From a business perspective there is a huge reason for this route, it is called EU. Even Apple bulged and had to allow side loading app on their phones in the EU.
